Escape

NATO Intelligence Department

Log: 29348-89A

Subject: Dr. Ruse

Date: January 17, 2344

-Recorded transmission between Dr. Ruse and Admiral Cornway-

Dr. Ruse: I hope that the documents that I have sent you are sufficient enough to dispel any doubts about my research.

Adm. Cornway: Yes, yes. My experts have informed me of the potential it has. I am more than impressed. J&H has always been known for their remarkable breakthroughs.

Dr. Ruse: Have you ever wondered why the J&H Biotech and Research Firm is always ahead of the game, why there isn't any leaks of any kind that would help its competitors?

Adm. Cornway: Does your employer know that you're in communication with NATO?

Dr. Ruse: No one knows that I'm talking to you. Do you know what it is like working for J&H? You're the first person I've talked to outside of a research facility in a decade. I'm only talking to you now because I'm being sent to Luna for a week to present my findings to a board of directors and the guards got lazy for a few minutes.

Adm. Cornway: You're not planning on stealing the research are you? NATO doesn't like getting involved with the private sector, especially not with a company as powerful as J&H.

Dr. Ruse: That's why I came to you, a high ranking official with a lot of pull. NATO is the only thing more powerful, the only entity that can successfully stand its ground against J&H.

Adm. Cornway: This is a dangerous game you're playing. A clash between NATO and J&H would be catastrophic to the economy and could get a lot of innocent people killed.

Dr. Ruse: I could easily make it worth NATO's while.

Adm. Cornway: What does NATO get out of this?

Dr. Ruse: The research of course. At least NATO would put it to practical use to help the people, J&H would just sell it off to billionaires. My research, if I get the chance to complete it, will be the greatest breakthrough in medical history and that kind of power needs to be in the right hands.

Adm. Cornway: Let me get this straight, NATO simply has to keep you protected and allow you to finish your research and you'll hand it over as payment for the protection?

Dr. Ruse: Yes, plain and simple when put in words.

Adm. Cornway: You know, you'll be put in a facility and won't be able to communicate with the outside world at all. It won't be much different than working for J&H in the end.

Dr. Ruse: Perhaps, but J&H is evil.

Adm. Cornway: People call companies evil all the time. What sets them apart?

Dr. Ruse: You know how I told you about how there are never leaks? Entire research stations have gone quite, all communication with them cease shortly after some sort of research breakthrough is announced publicly. Also, that's not the most disturbing part. The agent I'm developing isn't stable at the moment. It's very dangerous and I'm always ordered to ship a sample to the stations that go quite. I think their testing it on the people there to get data and to get rid of loose ends.

Adm. Cornway: They purge the staff using you incomplete research. That's beyond inhumane.

Dr. Ruse: My research is approaching completion. If all goes well, it won't be dangerous at that point, but J&H doesn't deserve it and they'll kill me soon after. Also, I initially started my research in the hope of helping people. J&H won't do that, they would only supply it to the rich elite. NATO on the other hand is more likely to use it for the people.

Adm. Cornway: So you're running, out of a sense of morality.

Dr. Ruse: As a scientist devoted to a field of study, there is nothing that I want to see more than to have my research put into use for the greater good of humanity. I want to see the results for years to come, not just be offed by some greedy CEO.

Adm. Cornway: I think I can help. You said you were heading to Luna. Where are you departing from?

Dr. Ruse: They're taking me to the Jovian Spaceport where I'll be put on a private shuttle. We leave on January 23.

Adm. Cornway: The HMS Eurasia is in port and is scheduled to leave on that day for Mars. I can set up passage through that ship if you can get away from your guards long enough.

Dr. Ruse: It will be hard, but I think that I can get away for a bit like I'm doing right now.

Adm. Cornway: What about the research you'll be leaving behind at your station. If you disappear, won't they be able to simply pick up where you left off?

Dr. Cornway: No, I'll have everything with me. I've heard that everyone who is going with me is leaving because everyone that is left behind is going to be purged. Once I'm gone, all the research will be with me.

Adm. Cornway: They truly are terrible people. I'll have someone find you and provide escort one you get away and bring you to the NATO base on Mars. Everything will be taken care of, you just need to get away for a few minutes.

Dr. Ruse: I am truly in your debt admiral. You have no idea how relieved I am.

Adm. Cornway: Thank me when you see me. I'll wait for you on Mars personally. Good luck doctor.

Dr. Ruse: Thank you once again. Good bye.
