Yokubo: The Dakota Resort

Was chatting on Yahoo and was reminded of a bunch of older stories I hadn't loaded up here, including this one, which I did around 2005, I think. Possibly older than that - it's from back when I was still double-spacing between sentences! *shudder*

Laura Lightbourne, the timber wolf commander of the legendary pleasure cruiser "Yokubo" could be said to be fairly legendary hirself. Currently, Kyoda was away from the Yokubo, down on the planet sorting out things with the resort owner who had a sudden change of mind about hosting the crew of the Yokubo during its annual crew vacation. Kyoda and Laura decommissioned the ship for several weeks while maintenance and upgrade operations kicked in, giving the crew a free vacation at a different resort each year. Though the resort manager promised them use of the resort facilities for three weeks, he was now backing out of the arrangement, threatening costly delays for the Yokubo.
Laura sighed and leaned back in her armchair. Shi was the only person on the bridge at the moment. Because the ship was docked, only a skeleton crew was needed to run the mostly-automated procedures. The rest of the crew was off sleeping, eating, relaxing, or enjoying each other's company.
Laura's sheath bulged a bit as shi closed hir eyes and thought of Kyoda. Hir mate was no doubt able to handle the finicky resort owner, but shi had been looking forward to a few weeks of uninterrupted time with hir. A few more hours wouldn't kill hir, shi supposed.
A beep from the armrest alerted hir to an incoming message. Shi tapped a button and Kyoda's image appeared onscreen.
"Laura! How are you?" the dragoness asked, smiling.
Laura smiled back. Shi always loved how Kyoda looked. Kyoda grinned. "I'm looking forward to seeing you too! I've been talking to the resort owner. They say they don't have our reservation here, so we're pretty much out of luck. From the looks I've been getting from the desk people, though, I don't think we'd want to be here anyways." Shi sighed and looked over hir shoulder at something off-screen.
"Well, I wonder if there are any other resorts on this planet we could stay at," Laura said.
"Already on it. I've got a hold of an old friend of yours who ended up running The Dakota Resort on the other side of the planet. I figure we can shuttle people there and keep the Yokubo docked here to save a few bucks."
Laura's ears perked. "An old friend?"
Kyoda grinned, white teeth gleaming. "Shi asked me not to spoil the surprise. Anyways, you'll find out soon. Shi's ready for us immediately."
"Great! I'll see you soon then," Laura said.
Kyoda blew hir a kiss before cutting the connection. The shuttle would only take an hour or so to come back up from the planet, and then a few more hours to run to the other side of the planet. The lush beach world would offer plenty of scenery, shi knew, so shi looked forward to the trip.
Shi pushed a button on the other armrest and spoke into the small microphone that popped up in front of hir muzzle from the chair.
"Attention all crew: this is Commander Lightbourne speaking. We'll shuttle everybody over The Dakota Resort in an hour or so. Crew members should be ready to go at their assigned airlocks by then. Crew is reminded that we'll be closing the ship off for several weeks for maintenance, so please take everything with you you'll need." Shi cleared hir throat before continuing. "Because of a... mistake... with the reservations at the first resort, the Dakota Resort has graciously offered to take us in. That is all for now."
Shi tapped the button and microphone withdrew. Nothing to do now but wait and find out who the mystery person was that offered them space at the Dakota.

The flight to the resort was very pleasant, Laura thought. Lush scenery the whole way, and that wasn't considering the tightly packed assortment of well-hung herms riding the shuttle together. Shi always considered hirself fortunate to have such a loyal and exceedingly beautiful crew.
Shi smiled and slipped hir arm around Kyoda's waist as they leaned against each other during the descent to the surface of the planet. The dragon made a low type of purring noise as they nuzzled each other before, with a loud whump, they landed on their designated pad at the resort.
Laura and Kyoda exited the shuttle first and walked down the ramp to meet their host. A very tall canine strode towards them. Nina pulled away somewhat, but kept hir arms on Laura's shoulders. "I'm doing fine, love. It's so nice to see you! I never would have expected to see you here on this trashy old planet!"
Laura laughed. "I wanted the crew to have a nice, quiet vacation, and this was the smallest, quietest place with the facilities to accommodate both us and the Yokubo." Shi looked a little rueful. "Unfortunately, I guess they weren't so accommodating for us."
Nina laughed and linked hir arm around Laura's. "They're just a little backwards here. They're still warming up to me, after all." Shi smiled at Kyoda, who was standing next to Laura, smiling indulgently. "And don't you stand there like you don't know me, Ryoshi!"
"How could anyone forget you, Nina?" the dragoness replied smoothly. "It's good to see you again."
Nina grinned. "That's more like it. Now, c'mon, I'll show you to your rooms."
The resort was very new, Laura saw. Construction must have barely finished when they arrived. Construction stickers were still plastered on windows and some bare electrics lay around on the ground, waiting to be collected.
Other resort workers made their way to the shuttle to pick up luggage and lead the crew members to their rooms. They looked fairly hastily assembled and very much taken aback at the size of some of their guests.
"This is my dream resort," Nina said. "I was going to try and track you down eventually, Laura, once I'd finished it. But you're here now, so it's okay!"
Laura nodded, impressed by the wide red-brick walkways, lined with all manner of indigenous tropical plants and flowers. The buildings were made out of a light, white material. All of the small hut-like rooms contained two bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchenette, and easy access to the sparkling white beach nearby or the communal hot tubs and pools on the other side.
"This place looks fantastic," Kyoda said. "I'm very impressed, Nina."
"I put a lot of work into designing it. I didn't want another fifty-story hotel place. There's no character to them. This place was supposed to open next week, but it's no trouble at all opening early for you guys."
"So what happened to the other resorts you own?"
"I sold most of the them off, but I keep a controlling interest in stock so I have a say in what happens," Nina said, leading them into one of the huts. "Anyways, I'm a micromanager at heart, so getting the hands-on stuff is always more my style."
Shi turned around, smiling broadly. "This'll be your place. I'm assuming you two are still together?" shi asked. Not waiting for an answer, shi continued. "You two make the greatest couple. Anyways, I'll have some of the valets bring your luggage. I've gotta run, though. I need to get some emergency food orders placed so we can feed you!" Shi grinned and waved as shi loped out quickly, leaving Kyoda and Laura alone in the room.
"Imagine that," Laura mused. "Meeting Nina again! It's been... what, five years since we saw hir last?"
"Yes, after we stayed at one of hir resorts. We never did get a chance to book at one of hir places again, unfortunately."
"This place looks great, though, and it's right along the main course. We could swing by every time!"
Kyoda grinned. "Not a bad idea. Now, I have a good idea too. Wanna go test the waters?"

After their swim, during which several more crew members joined them, they returned to their lodge, toweling themselves off on the way. They swam in the buff, not worrying about clothes. The resort was far enough away from the other resorts to stave off any complaints, and the hotel workers didn't seem to mind -- in fact, most of the hotel workers seemed positively pumped at the large number of Nina-sized furs swarming their workplace. "It's been a long day," shi said, glancing at the magnificent sunset. "I'm still very much on ship's time, so I think I'll turn in for the night." Shi ran hir fingers down the back of Laura's neck and grinned. "Don't stay up too late," shi said, tickling hir softly, "and behave."
Laura nodded and grinned. Shi and Nina watched the dragoness saunter off towards hir lodge, hips swaying with a natural rhythm that Laura found irresistible. As they watched, one of Nina's hotel workers, a built, lifeguard-ish otter, approached Kyoda. Nina nodded, eyes closed. "Really?"
