Chapter 2

*rewrite*

Two months had passed since Damien started to play the game. Two months of questing and leveling and by now he was among the 1000 best players, the so called "Elite".

When he fought with Cathrin at his side there was nothing that could stop them. It didn't matter if it was a simple mob hunt or a PvP-match.

Most players just took a supporting role in the game, using guns to attack from distance, while Damien was more active. He preferred a sword as his weapon of choice, one called Eagleblade, a dark colored longsword with a cross guard formed like eagle wings. While other players tried to hit on Cathrin and being not very successful at it, he used stealth skills to attack them.

Cathrin was using a katana called Onyxedge, keeping the opponents digimon busy.

Just one of their tactics.

Both their weapons were so called unique drops, items that only existed once in the game.

He was just checking the stats of his armor, when he got a message.

It was from Kuro, also an elite-player. He was often questing with him and some other guys from Kuros guild, the "Sons of Odin".

Damien was more a solo-player, yet he knew Kuro from other games.

Kuro01 - Dude, heard the news?

Aeto - What news?

Kuor01 - They announced a closed beta of the next version of DEO for the elite-players

Aeto - Sounds fun, release?

Kuro01 - next week

One week later...

Except for the announcement there was no information about this beta. Nothing leaked, no screenshots no changelogs, just nothing.

Damien tried hard to find something, but it seemed to be a big secret, a well kept one at that.

So the only thing the 1000 players of the elite could do was to wait.

Damien checked his phone.

'Only half an hour to go.'

He was in the mall getting himself a new headset. He broke his old one by accident, tripping over its wire. Since he didn't want to start the beta without a proper headset, he had to get a new one. He thought he would have enough time, but the line was long, and the cashier annoyingly slow.

'20 minutes'

Damien sighed, as he finally left the shop. He still had to drive home. Public transport would take too long, knowing that he drove here himself.

So he put the new headset into his backpack and went outside, only to be greeted by a cloudy sky and rain.

'Oh really...' He flipped his hood over his head and continued to his motorcycle.

A Ducati Monster, took him a while until he saved the money for that one. He put his helmet on and checked the phone again.

17 minutes.

Arriving on the he drove as fast as he could, yet trying to be careful not to slip. Thanks to the city traffic he would come to late.

Then he heard the confirmation, the alarm he set on his phone.

"Fuck..." It were about 5 minutes till he was home.

Without even recognizing it he drove faster.

In front of him he saw a pair of lights heading his way, then he heard a loud screeching noise and saw the car loose control.

The next few seconds seem to happen in slow motion.

Damien tried to evade the car to the right, seeing it drift by, hitting the back of his bike. He was turned around, starting to drift. Then he saw how the next car coming to a stop right in front of him. Braking he fell to the side, still sliding over the street. He hit the front of the car with his left side. Everything went white for a moment, then he found himself on the floor, and his leg trapped under his bike. He tried to lift his bike up, but it was heavy and while he was trying he heard something behind him. The sound of tires gliding over a slippery surface.

He turned his head just to see a pair of headlights inches away from his face.

In this moment he was certain that his life was over, but also he was surprised, no flashbacks, no life running before his eyes, but instead... a pair of bright violet eyes.

Then the world seemed to spin around, he felt like he was lifted from the ground, like he was flying, but just for the blink of an eye. Then he landed on the ground, softer than he had expected.

Behind him he could hear the cars crashing and in front of him a soft female voice asking:

"Are you hurt?"

"We have a confirmation."

Slowly he opened his eyes, his head felt like it was going to explode every second now.

"First contact on August, 12th. 13Pm ."

He felt how something pulled at the side of his forehead, he saw two slender needles, with small drips of blood on them. The pain ceased slowly. Looking around he saw Autumns and some Scientist-goons, he saw the tubes running into his left arm and the infusion bags filled with strange colored fluids.

"Confirmed as D-5305."

"How are his vitals?" Autumns face moved into his field of view, "Can he continue?"

"Vitals are... Heart rate is fine, blood pressure too... his brain activity is high, near the critical range already. Another session could inflict severe damage on the neural cells."

Autumns sighed, "Well, bring him back to his cell. We'll give him a few hours rest, then we will continue."

Damien didn't really took notice of how they brought him back, he only felt that he was lying on the cold floor again. He tried to get up but there was no strength left in him.

'What kind of machine was that...'

So he was lying on the wet floor, staring at the dark ceiling, waiting to fall asleep.

"Ca-Cathrin?"

Damien stared at the foreign, yet well known figure in front of him.

"How is that even... what did just happen?" he looked behind him. The road was not far away, he could see the two cars, crashed into another and between them the pitiful remnants of his bike.

"I should be..." He looked back at the digimon, "You... saved me."

"Yes." she said, "of course I did."

"What about the the others... in the cars?" he stuttered.

She looked over there, "I will check on them, wait here."

With that she disappeared, just a few shreds of mist stayed for a moment.

'Just like in the game...' Damien thought to himself, 'This can't be real.'

He tried to calm down and get back on feet, but when he moved his right feet he felt immense pain. It was the leg that was trapped under his bike before.

"Fu... Guess that's real." He looked at his leg, the side of his jeans missing and beneath he saw a bloody mess. Skin and a bit flesh scraped away by the street.

"You are hurt." She was back and went down on her knees looking at the leg.

"What are you doing?"

She put her hand on the leg, "Nothing is broken. But... stay still." under her hand a small piece of paper appeared full of Japanese writing.

'Sigil-magic...' he remembered. It was one of her skills in-game. She was able to heal minor wounds with those sigils. Instantly the pain vanished.

"Better?" he nodded. She smiled a bit, "good, but don't try to put much weight on the leg, at least for a few days."

Damien sighed, "What about them?"

"They're fine. They are outside, debating and looking for something, I guess."

"Me, probably. Anyways... could you explain what the heck is happening right now?"

"Of course, but... not here." She extended her hand, "Give me your hand."

Damien hesitated for a second, but then he grabbed her hand.
