There is so much creativity to be found in the furry community that it is hard to not be inspired by it. One enterprising fur by the name of Frekki created the monster that inspired this story. If a monster of some sort were to suddenly appear, would we be genuinely frightened by it?

Frekki (c) her owner, who can be found at: http://furaffinity.net/user/frekki

The evening was not going as well as Frekki the Monster had hoped. She was doing her best to frighten passers-by (because that's the sort of thing you do when you're a monster) but in a world where furries and humans lived together, even she had trouble standing out despite her odd appearance. She was a six foot tall creature with short orange fur over most of her body, and a thick long tail with black stripes with a large tuft of black fur on its end. Thick black fur extended from her elbows and knees to her hands and feet, where large flexible claws took the place of fingers and toes. Her head and neck were surrounded by a shaggy black mane. A pair of white horns peeked out from the top of her mane and her head had the rounded snout of a cow and large ears that swept back, similar to a deer.

Frekki was hiding behind some bushes near a sidewalk. She peered above the bush, looking back and forth for unsuspecting human passers-by in the suburban neighborhood she had chosen to terrorize. Her tail swished around excitedly; a young woman and a little girl were approaching. When they were just a few feet away, she leapt over the bush, landed in front of the humans and let out a loud "RAWRR!!"

The mother and daughter initially recoiled and gasped at the surprise. Frekki made a scary face, growled and swiped a claw-hand at them. The mother took a step back, but the child immediately ran towards her and hugged her leg.

"Pretty!" She said, nuzzling her cheek against her fur. Confused, Frekki ceased her growling and dropped her arms to her sides. She looked down at the child, who looked up at her with a big smile on her face.

"Angie!" The mother doted. "I'm sorry, miss, but my daughter really likes the color orange. Can I get a picture of you two?" She asked before opening her purse and pulling out a cell phone.

"Sure." Frekki said, letting out a small sigh.

"Let go of the nice furry, sweetie." The mom said. The child let go and turned to face her mother. Frekki dropped to one knee and did her best to smile. "Smile!" The mother said in a sing-song voice. She pressed a button on the phone. The child leapt up and wrapped her arms around the monster's neck, eliciting a surprised yelp from her. The phone beeped, and a moment later, the mother started to laugh.

"Oh my goodness, that is so funny!" The woman said before turning the phone around so Frekki and the child could see the new picture. The child giggled at the sight: She was gleefully hanging from Frekki's neck while the monster was caught mid-yelp with her large green eyes bugged out, her mouth wide open, and a grey pointed tongue sticking out. "Thank you!" The mother said, continuing down the sidewalk, daughter in tow.

Frekki sighed again. "You're welcome." She said unenthusiastically. That's the third one today, she thought while slowly walking back around the bushes to her hiding place. _What am I doing wrong? Am I just not scary enough? _ She pondered. She shook her head back and forth and ran her claw-fingers through her mane to make it appear unkempt, then raised her hands in a scary (to her) pose and practiced her roar.

"ROAR! No, that's not it...RAAR! Still not there, too high...um...RUAWRR!" Yeah, that's it!" Frekki said, now pleased with herself. She smiled and eagerly peered over the bushes for another person to scare.

A few moments later, a twelve-year old boy wearing a football jersey, helmet and pads approached. Once again, Frekki waited until he was a few feet away and then leapt over the bush, landed in front of the child and let out a loud "RUAWRR!!"

The child gasped in surprise and stared back for a brief moment. He then lowered his head, let out a war cry and charged toward the monster.

"Oof!" Frekki gasped when the child's helmet met her stomach. The force was enough for her to lose her footing, so the child pushed her aside and kept going. The monster fell into the bush she had been using to hide behind and went "Ow ow ow ow!" as the branches scratched and poked her. She gingerly untangled herself from the bush and stood up. She looked down the sidewalk and saw the child continuing to run with his hands raised in the air in a victory gesture.

Frekki was initially indignant at her latest failure: "Meh! These stupid people don't know what scary is!" She said aloud to nobody in particular. Truthfully, though, she was a little sad and looked down at the ground, dejected. Still, it would have been nice if just one person had been scared, she thought._ I guess I'll go back to the hills. The rocks are probably worried about me._ Before she could start on her way, a man tapped her shoulder.

"Excuse me, miss." He said.

Frekki growled, quickly spun around, grabbed the man's arms, pulled him towards her and angrily shouted in his face: "WHAT DO YOU WANT?!"

The man, clearly frightened yelled: "Ahhh! Please don't eat me!"

Frekki was taken by surprise and gasped. "Oh! So, you're...afraid of me?" She asked. The man winced and nodded his head.

"THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!" Frekki exclaimed. She jumped up and down for joy, her claw-hands still holding the man's arms.

Once she stopped, the man spoke: "So, you're not going to eat me?"

"Oh, no. I mean, I wasn't going to, but even if I was, which I'm not, how could I? You just made my day!" Frekki said. She then let go of the man's arms, took a step back, and then jumped forward and gave him a hug. "Thank you so much!" She exclaimed before running away.

The bemused man stood for a few moments and watched Frekki run away. Finally, he said: "They sure don't make monsters like they used to!"
