#1 of A Tale of Lives

Sean takes his girlfriend, Kaylie, out for dinner. All is well and they grow all the closer, the odd pair they are. However, tragedy strikes on the way home...

Sean was staring face first into his mirror, he brushed his teeth first, the greenish foam covering his mouth in a cool mint as he thought and anxiety grew within his bones like moss to a tree. He quickly spit it out and rinsed his mouth out, looking back into the mirror to see what else needed fixing. His hair? He checked it again. Mulling it over he decided to do it over. He took his silver brush and quickly let it roam through his hair, trying to find the position in which it would look nice. Finally he settled for a sweep over his left side, parting it on his right and pulling it back. The dark brown locks liked to come uneven from time to time, so he was sure to take extra care in spraying it. He brushed his fur again, making sure everything sat flat and smooth. The wolf's fluffy body often sprung up all over the place and he simply wouldn't have it today. He took a look to the tail, high up and waving behind him. He'd learned to control it as not to give away his current feelings, so it was always still when in public. Another problem the waving of the poofy object caused was the fact that it would never stay smoothed out and clean. One thing that constantly irked him. He wanted his best for this date, it was Kayile and his first year anniversary and if he had any imperfections he would hate himself. He'd chosen a nice restaurant, his best clothes, and there, waiting on his bathroom counter, was his grandfather's bow-tie. It was Sean's most prized possession. The little adornment held so a lot of good memories and love. His grandfather had passed the tie down to Sean, like his grandfather before him. Just looking at the silvery tie made him tear up. Family outings, parks, even just around the house, his grandfather had cherished the tie. So in those memories Sean saw that this would be a perfect time to use and honor it. Sean looked himself over once again and, with a smile, he picked up the tie and fashioned it around his neck like he'd been taught. He pulled the loops tight and gave the edges a tug, pulling them into alignment with each other. Now then, he was ready; or perhaps he should fix his hair once more...

Kaylie brushed the dress down again. The gold and white fabric caught her fur a bit. She wasn't much used to wearing these frilly things, she was more into her loose clothing, something comfy and lackadaisical, but right now she knew she had to. It was a big day after all. Sean would be taking her out to dinner, the sweety. She took up her brush and gently moved it along her amber hairline, pushing it past her ears and keeping it neat. Her fur lay down neatly, golden with thin black jagged lines dotting her arms and legs. Her natural tough girl attitude would be revoked for tonight. She knew how much this meant for Sean. God he was such a girl. The cat laughed, thinking about how different they really were. Finally she set the brush down and closed her pretty yellow eyes. "Maybe today he will...?" She half asked herself. She knew the time would come, and she expected it sooner or later. However she still didn't know what she would do if it happened. Butterflies crowded her chest and made her feel light and unnatural. These feelings were not normal. What happened to her tough attitude? Her 'beat 'em up' persona? She decided to ignore the thoughts and turned around. Walking into her room she came upon a large gray punching bag. With a small pullback she swung. He fist hit with the force of an anvil, knocking the bag away, before it swung back with half the force. She caught it and smiled. That felt a hell of a lot better. Once more, for good measure she brushed the dress down, its frills moving gently as she did so. Her tail flicked behind her, striped black and gold, in a timely manner like a clock. Tick, tock, tick, tock...

Sean's little blue car pulled up into Kaylie's drive, and immediately she came out in a bolt. Her dark figure flashed past the headlights, showing Sean a glimpse of gold. The door suddenly swung open and Kaylie hopped in, cold air rushing in with her. She slammed the door shut and shuttered, it must have been really cold out. "Here" Sean chuckled, reaching over and turning up the heat. "Should be a bit warmer in a bit." He smiled to Kaylie, who laughed and pulled him into a hug. "I missed you ya know, ya fuckin goof." She stated, moving back a little so she could see his eyes. "I missed you too, but work has really been at me for a while, I didn't have any time to do much else but sleep when I got off." With a quick eye roll he laughed once again, pulling Kaylie into a kiss. The held it for a moment, their tongues barely touching before they let go. "Come on, let's go eat. Sound good?" He asked, pulling out of the driveway and into the street. "Defiantly, I'm starving. I bet I could eat a whole platoon out of their food!" She put on a jokingly pained expression and grabbed her stomach to emphasize her hunger. "And that's another reason I'm glad you decided to get out of the military." Sean said with a laugh. When they had met, Kaylie had been in the military since her junior year of high school. They met during a party Sean had inevitably shown up at. He couldn't stay away from the shows and amazing lights. Fancy parties where just his thing, and it was the best night of his life so far.

Sean and Kaylie sat across from each other, only a table and bread in between the two. The table adorned a white cloth and one purple candle, fire blooming almost as much as their growing affection for one another. Their drinks quickly came and they looked to each other once more. "You know, you are looking amazing tonight. I rarely have the privilege of seeing you in a dress." He grinned and quickly took a sip of his water. Kaylie smirked and rolled her eyes. "Well, I just thought that tonight would be a good time, seeing as this it our anniversary. Besides, this is a treat for you. Only other time your going to get to see this is on- our next anniversary." She quickly caught herself before she spilled her ambitions. Sean drew a blank look. "Our? Oh right!" He laughed at his own joke, as Kaylie laughed and took a sip of wine. The purple-red liquid rolled around in the glass, brilliant sweet nectar that can only be associated with love and happiness, something that cannot be merely tossed away; it must be drunken with care or shattered and broken. Only another memory trapped into words inside of Sean's mind. His eyes drew dull as he brought more into the thought, trying to derive some sort of meaning out of the liquid. "Sean? You there bro?" Kaylie's choice words and bright observant eyes brought him back. "Oh, yes. I'm sorry. I just thought of some new material." Sean was a long time writer. When he wasn't working he was putting words onto paper or observing the world around him for new ideas, ideals and thoughts. This is how he spent his time, trying to derive meaning out of the things he saw and the world itself. As though what he saw wasn't good enough in itself. With an odd smile Kaylie nodded and took another sip. She knew of his affinity for writing and seeing more in what was around him. It was one of the few ways he was able to escape his teenage years. She didn't know much about what had happened, but what he'd been able to hold together and tell her made her pity him. He and his grandfather had been golfing when he was around fifteen, and his grandfather suddenly collapsed. Apparently he died shortly after that in the hospital with Sean. Kaylie hadn't known what it was like to lose close family, but she knew that it must have been painful. His grandfather had been the only person he looked up to for a long time. Until recently he'd been the only one. Suddenly, on that thought Kaylie took notice of the bow-tie Sean worn. "Where'd you pick that up? It's very nice." She complemented, reaching over and touching the soft edge. Sean looked to it, then begun to tear up. "My grandfather gave it to me when I turned thirteen. He told me that it had been in the family for a very long time and that I should wear it whenever I felt was best. He wore it all the time, it was a part of his natural attire." Suddenly he smiled and wiped his eye. "I loved him so much. I just wish he was still around to meet you." Sean looked up into Kaylie's eyes. "I really do love you, you know?" Kaylie nodded and leaned over to kiss him again. "I know... I love you too." Their food swiftly arrived and Sean folded his hands in prayer. "Thank you lord," He murmured. "for everything." Kaylie followed suit, she wasn't very religious, but she followed Sean with what he did. The two dug in and exchanged a few more quips here and there, before finally, Sean looked up from his half eaten steak. "Kaylie, there is something I've been wanting to ask you for a bit." Kaylie's fork almost dropped as she looked up. Her heart pounded and time slowed down."I-I'm not ready for this... I've no clue what to say! Is-Is he really going to ask me...? Today!?" "Kaylie, how do you feel about moving in with me? I mean, I know you've been having a few problems trying to keep your bills up, and I have enough room for your stuff. I'd really like to move this relationship to the next step." His eyes nervously looked to hers. He looked back down to his food. "I also heard that your landlord was being quite a dick the other day. From what I heard he got mad at you because you knocked a hole in the wall while training. Did you knock the bag off the ceiling again?" "Oh thank god..." She thought with a small sigh. "Actually no, the pull up bar came off yesterday. It tore two holes in the wall and he came to check up on the house. Either way he over reacted. So yea, I think that'd be great, moving in with you." She smiled. She'd been in his home before, and though she only stayed a night and a morning, she'd found it very nice and surprisingly well kept. "Let's, please. I think you're right. Besides... Then we can have a little more 'fun' together." She grinned mischievously, hinting at something best discussed at home rather than in public. Sean blushed brightly and quickly looked down to his food and begun to eat again. "Good, then we'll get you packed up later and move you in." He said quickly. Kaylie laughed at her boyfriend's sheepishness. He was always so easy to make uneasy and it made her laugh every time. Soon they finished eating and walked out, holding one another in the harsh cold of winter. They got into the car, and held each other close still at it warmed up. The little blue car speed down the highway, snow had begun to fall only moments after the two had left and it was starting to get pretty bad. "Whoa... Normally I like the snow, but right now it's a bit much. Good thing we're almost home..." Sean said to himself, doing his best to see in the blurry snow. "Hey, you think it'd just be a better idea to stay at my place? I could get us some hot coco and we can sit on the couch with an blanket and stay close together... It'd be nice, don'tcha think?" "Yea, I'd like that Sean." The cat girl looked over to her boyfriend with a smile, imagining his warm house, coco... Sleeping close to him, cuddled up. "OH SHI-" Sean was suddenly cut off as a car in front of him spiraled out and careened into another car next to it. Suddenly that one little slide turned into a war on the road. Sean swerved to keep from hitting the car in front of him, but in doing so his own car hit an icy patch and begun to spin out of control before suddenly coming to a halt, sending the two of them into darkness... Sean's eyes opened slowly. It was cold. Where was he? Wait... Where was Kaylie?! He suddenly turned to see his unconscious girlfriend in the passenger's seat next to him, face in the airbag. Something... Something had dampened it was well... Blood. "K-Kaylie!" Sean shouted, quickly moving to help her. Her face was covered in the liquid. Lights flashed behind him, and people were moving behind him. Getting up a bit more, Sean suddenly realized how much pain he was in as well. He ignored it, and pulled himself out of the car. Hurriedly he moved to Kaylie's door, and ripped it open. His fingers shaking and fumbling about. He undid the seatbelt on her and lifted her up. He nearly fell over, her toned body weighed quite a bit more than his own thin and frail body. He dragged himself through the snow, making his way to the lights of what he could only assume to be the ambulance. Slowly, but surely he made it. A husky who was checking over another wolf turned to see him carrying Kaylie and froze up. He rushed over began to look over them. "HEY! Get someone over here now! We have a two major injuries here!" He looked back to Sean. "Boy, how are you even standing? You need to lay down." Sean shook his head and pushed Kaylie into the Husky's arms. He'd be able to help her more that this simple wolf could. Sean turned and started walking back to his car, but he was suddenly overcome with pain. He feel to his knees. He put a hand down to his stomach, only to find cold steel. He looked down, his eyes falling slowly and growing dim. A long steel bar was embedded into his stomach, and it had been bleeding ever since he'd gotten up. His eyes awoke with shock. He looked back to see two more people running over to his side. He fell over, the snow coating his body. "Sir, sir hold on, we're gonna get you to a hospital as soon as we can. Someone! Get a gurney over here!" Another man came with the gurney and set it out. The men together lifted Sean up and set him down, strapping him in and hauling him away. The four passed Kaylie, who sat, holding a new bandage and some ice to her head. When she saw the people pass by she shot up and ran to Sean. When she saw the wound she immediately stopped. "SEAN!" She ran and pushed past the guy in her way. "Sean! H-holy shit.." She looked at the wound and pulled away, unable to see the blood. "Holy shit... Holy shit holy shit holy shit..." She began to panic and sat down again. This was not good.

Snow... Snow is the barrier between happiness and death. One moment you are dancing, enjoying life, and the next it rips it all away, only if it has the chance. They say that love can overcome all odds. However, death can be the one thing that trumps all, and even in the afterlife, who is to say everyone ends up in the same place?

Thoughts bubbled and fizzed all around Seans head. Quotes, memories, a bow-tie. Everything fading in and out. His girlfriend's calls and cries. He should go and comfort her, she needed it, but he couldn't move, and he felt so incredibly weak. It pained him more than the feeling deep in his stomach. What was that again? He couldn't remember why his stomach hurt so much.

A ways away, in the tattered car, lie a small bow-tie. On the seat of the car, the tie loosened and simply pulled off, barely damaged. Wearable, lying in a circle of blood, however, sitting just around it, attaining no wound of its own.

To be continued...
