#4 of Various Information

So I completely tore down the universe I had built around Andromeda in the hopes of creating something new and better. It's currently, tentatively, named 'Broken Star', for reasons that will become increasingly clear as I flesh out the details behind it. Set in the Milky Way in 2550 CE, it focuses on a far smaller scale. Specifically, a handful of star systems around Sol and Sol itself. It's still up in the air, but I may very well make this a semi-open canon to build upon it in interesting ways and see where people take it.

Edit: Revised a few first paragraphs to make way for the new modifications to the setting.

The Colonial Alliance

President of the Alliance: Simon Ganesh (Male, Terran) Chancellor of the Alliance: Samina Tawfeek (Female, Tesgnov - Desert)

Based in the Sol system, the Colonial Alliance is the truest human government in space. Formed only decades earlier, the Colonial Alliance is held together through the ideal of a common prosperity. Split almost evenly, the Alliance is made up of the humans of Sol, the canines of Chara, and the felines of Procyon.

With its capital at New Shanghai on a terraformed Mars, the Alliance attempts to govern its colonies from the government centers on the planet. Its elected legislature meets once a year for a month at a time to decide on national interests and vote on the few legislative bills that appear that need the high level attention. Other than the legislature and the legislature elected Chancellor, the Alliance's systems are autonomous, creating law that suits the system and electing their own leaders. By and large, the Alliance upholds republican traditions, though some systems have opted for a more autocratic reign.

The Alliance as an organization is relatively new. Formed in 2503 CE when the Caliphate of Procyon and the Federal Republic of Braka signed the Colonial Charter, which also included the Terran Republic. As per the charter, all of these governments still exist as semi-autonomous entities. Several governments on Earth also signed the charter, including Europa Federalis, the Pan-Asian Commonwealth, and the Russian Federation.

While human culture within the Alliance varies system by system, even planet to planet, it's largely derived from an old blending of Chinese, European, and American cultures into a single group. The dominant language of the Alliance demonstrates this mix as well, being largely English with significant additions of Mandarin Chinese. Religion within the Alliance has fallen off in importance but the old faiths of Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism continue to dominate the demographics of the Alliance.

As Alliance scout ships expanded across the stars, exploring star systems long seen in the night skies of Earth, new species were found. Both species were interesting, to humanity, in the fact they resembled anthropomorphized versions of animals native to Earth. The canines of Chara - the Braki - were the first to be discovered, and the first to be widely accepted into the Alliance in part due to the cultural link between dogs and humans within Earth's history. The felines of Procyon - the Tesgno - were discovered a decade later, and likewise were largely accepted after some time and for the same reasons. Naturally, the discovery of the two species drew the theories regarding an ancient race seeding the galaxy with similar species; a thought that is intriguing, if impractical.

Star Systems

Sol: The cradle of Humanity, Sol retains its continual importance to the human race, even as it extends across the stars. Earth itself has become an overpopulated, heavily polluted world that is only barely capable of sustaining its human life, and, while culturally important for the human identity, is no longer of political importance. Mars, terraformed in the mid-22nd Century CE, has replaced Earth as a manufacturing, technological, and political center. The various moons of Saturn and Jupiter have become home to research stations, military bases, and mining facilities as time went on, with the furthest dwarf planets out being used as sensor relays to supplement the deep space ones. Despite the first glance, Sol is the most heavily defended system in known space.

Alpha Centauri: The first system to be colonized in the early 22nd Century, Alpha Centauri was the first successful colonization attempt on its first try. Colonization on Mars had failed the first time, and the sleeper ship to Alpha Centauri proved new theories correct regarding interstellar colonization. As a sort of "Gateway to Sol", despite holding one of the three gates that go into Sol itself, Alpha Centauri has attained significant commercial importance, and is one of the primary corporate centers for the Alliance, with many corporate headquarters based there.

Tau Ceti: The second colonized system, also done so through sleeper ships sent out in the late 21st Century, Tau Ceti has a relatively small population due in part to the system's devotion to research. Various research stations with special shielding to protect against the higher risk of meteors dot the system. On the ground, the planet is renowned for the research labs and universities that had created energy shielding in the first place, due entirely to the risk of meteor impacts on the surface and used on warships. Due to its proximity to the Chara system, it's also a first stop for many of the new immigrants, and serves as the location for the Brakian Embassy.

Beta Comae Berenices: Despite being one of the more recent Alliance claims, and holding one of the longest single jumps in space, Beta Comae is the third direct entrance to Sol in order to cut down transit time from the coreward systems that otherwise had to pass through Alpha Centauri. Aside from that, the system houses a handful of trade stations and military outposts, but has no worlds of its own. It's an overall unimportant system used primarily for transit.

Epsilon Eridani: One of the most vital systems, Epsilon Eridani hosts the largest colonies outside of the Sol System and is seen as a "Second Earth" due to habitability and climate of the world within the system. As such, like Sol itself, Epsilon Eridani has become a "jack of all trades" system, filling roles of manufacturing, politics, and commerce among many other things.

Sirius: One of the border systems of the Alliance, where government control comes to an end and corporate control begins, Sirius is devoid of planets. Like Beta Comae, Sirius is made up of several stations varying from military to diplomatic. It has a jumpgate to Procyon and serves as an ambasssadorial station for the Tesgno as well as an immigration and customs port for them much like Tau Ceti.

Gliese 876: Despite originally being a hopeful for colonization, those hopes were dashed by a world incapable of supporting human life. Instead it's only truly an Alliance system on paper and due to the military outpost, but is otherwise managed in full by several corporate entities that have all refused to lay claim upon the system. If nothing else it serves as a gate way into Sol, passing through Beta Comae.

Formalhaut: Like Gliese 876, Formalhaut has no true terrestrial bases. Instead, set within the atmosphere of Formalhaut b, are various labs built to research the sustainability of settlement within the upper levels of a gas giant with structures resistant to the enormous pressure and gravitational pull of the gas giant. Otherwise the system is unremarkable save for its gates.

Xi Bootis: Like most of the Coreward claims, Xi Bootis hosts research stations but little else. It's importance waned with the construction of the Beta Comae gate, as less traffic flowed through the system. Again, the only notable thing about it are the gates, though four systems still feed into the system, three of which corporate controlled.

Arcturus: Despite cultural significance to Terrans, Arcturus is home to only a single planet that's only barely habitable. Naturally, despite the Alliance presence in the system, it's still fought over by the corporations for what mineral wealth there is - within the constraints of Alliance law.

Murphrid: Home to no planets, Murphrid was claimed during a stellar rush in the 23rd Century CE. Following that, it was used as a launching point for further exploration and claiming by the Republic. Since the fall of the Republic and the formation of the Alliance, Murphrid has seen some commercial traffic coming through, keeping its stations active and its crews alive, but otherwise has fallen off in importance.

Military

As the Alliance expanded, so too did its military. Due to the prevalence of ship-to-ship combat over ground combat, the Alliance only has roughly 35,000 marines within its ranks, stationed across the Alliance. Its fleet however numbers approximately 350 warships of all classes; from corvette to dreadnought. Artificial gravity plating makes some of the larger ships possible, though none of them exceeds a kilometer in length.

Other than the military of the Alliance itself, every system is able to field its own military that operates within the constraints of Colonial Law. The largest colonies will have military forces that rival the militaries of Pre-Space Earth in size, equipment (relatively), and training. Sol is the prime example of this, as its forces are the best equipped and best trained, though Epsilon Eridani is close behind it.

Central command for the military is located on Luna - or the Moon, as some Terrans still call it - in various underground facilities built into craters, as well as extensive surface structures for less vital equipment and personnel. Luna and its orbital facilities also serves as the primary port for the fleet and is generally where all new recruits arrive and ships are built.
