#1 of Tales of Valora - Book 1

The first in a (potential) series of short stories, focusing on the denizens of the city of Valora.

This is the first of what is hopefully a series of short stories, ranging from many different angles of perspective. If there are any questions at all about the story, (potential) series, or any content, please feel free to comment to the material, or to my profile directly. Thank you, and enjoy.

Valora. Both a kingdom and a crowning jewel of the assembled lands, ruled by Lord Avalon, a king of human nobility. Home to creatures of all cuts of cloth, be it the Canis, a sturdy, _mostly _friendly race; the Felina, cat-like combatants that take many shapes and colors; the Avior, winged, peace-loving masters of the air; or us, the simple, uninteresting, yet infinitely adaptable humans. We all live in relative peace with one another in this land, working towards common goals, ambitions, hopes and dreams, bettering each other through this practice.

My name is Jarrod. I wasn't what you'd call the strongest, or the smartest, but I was very well-adjusted with whatever need arises. I was a nomad from birth, as my mother and father always traveled the assembled lands, looking for work and pay. No matter what the place, what the time, and who we were to meet, my mother and father always felt the need to move on, see other places. With the passing of my mother, my father decided that traveling the assembled lands was no longer the best thing for me, and as such, we settled in Valora, in the capitol of Sol.

A year has passed, and I can safely say, I made a home for myself. I worked as an apprentice to the local smithy, smelting down ingots to aid in the forging of weapons for the king's guard. I made friends with the locals near my home, including a very fun-loving and kindly, if albeit temperamental, Felina named Katrina. People like to nickname her "Kat" for obvious reasons; of course, any who have are short a few fingers. There's also a very witty, but shy Avior who lives near me. He goes by the name of Loren, which I always stifled a laugh at for some reason. Maybe since it sounds so feminine.

Me, Kat, and Loren all decided to head to the local pub to socialize. The owner knows my father, so we're allowed in without question. Kat downs a big mug of ale, of which concerns me, given her tendency to be hot-tempered. Loren sits in the corner, tinkering on something small and complex. As for me, I simply sat with Kat, conversing with her as the time passed.

"Are you sure you'll be fine, Katrina? You and ale don't mix." I ask, worriedly shuffling around in my chair. Katrina slams the mug down onto the table, and gives me a very odd look. I couldn't quite distinguish it as annoyance or humor.

"You worry too much, ya' damn pansy. If I knew you'd just sit here, twiddling your thumbs, I'd have gone here without you and bird-brain over there." She rings up the bartender, asking for a refill, and tossing a Gold piece into his hand. Her mug is back in her hand in short notice, and she's right back into the thick of it.

"Well, considering I've seen more of the bottom of that pitcher than I've seen of your face since we got here..."

Katrina places the mug down, and stares me down again. This time, I know it's one of annoyance. "Will you relax, Jarrod? I mean fuck, you sound like my mother." She notices the sudden grimace on my face at the mention of mothers. "R-right, sorry. I sometimes forget."

As the two of us sat in some odd silence, as the rest of the pub boomed, a small rabble of Canis come crowding through the entrance of the pub. The largest of them, probably 1/3 my size taller than me, seems to be arguing with the bartender, before he and his cronies are all given each a pitcher of the pub's strongest drink, Red River Rum. They say the name comes from its origin as a secret recipe to an infamous Avior pirate of the Red Bay, before the his body was found along the said river adjoining it. But hell, stories like that aren't anything I'd know or care about. What I'm really interested in watching is the rabble of Canis all stumbling around and babbling after having just a sip of the brew.

The larger Canis stumbles his way over to where Katrina and I were sitting, and I could tell it in his eyes, there was an undeniable look of lust, if it wasn't noticeable from the soaked bulge in his trousers beforehand. Without any introduction at all, or even asking if he can or should, he seats himself next to Katrina, wrapping an arm around and smelling at her, to which she replies with a growl.

"So, hot shtuff, how d'you feel about a big, hard cock up your assh?" The lude Canis starts with. I wouldn't say that was the smartest opening line, but, given his appearance, I didn't expect anything better.

"I don't know, cutie." Kat replies in a thick tone of sarcasm. "How would you feel about me neutering you?" A question that's followed by the audible unsheathing of her claws.

He lets out a throaty laugh, broken in parts with some hiccups and taking another swig of the rum. "A fieshty one! I'm gonna love makin' you my-*buuurp!* My bitch."

Before Kat gets the chance to tear the jerk's eyes out, he slams her into the pub table, spilling her drink across the floor. He's already up behind her, wrestling with his belt to unspring his large, knotted cock. The bartender's too occupied with the Canis' goons to take notice, which prompted me to intervene. I knew he'd try to have his way with Kat, right there in front of the whole pub, if I didn't act fast. I grab the empty glass mug, and, thinking on my feet, smash it into the Canis' head. He doesn't even seem to register it for a moment, nor does he even flinch, before throwing Kat to the ground and standing up straight, towering over me. He almost looked like the blow to his head had suddenly sobered him up.

"Well well now. Looks like the human thinks himself top dog here." He steps closer and closer, menacingly, bearing his teeth. His jaw strength could probably tear my arm clean off. "Y'see this here, bitch? You see this?" He points down towards his trousers, half-undone, but enough to expose his hulking, turgid shaft. "How's about I knot you right here, bitch? I bet you'd like that, wouldn't you?"

I can't lie, he was intimidating. Bigger than me, rippling with masculine build, and could probably take a sword to the chest and keep pushing. I knew that whatever I'd say wouldn't matter, he could easily take me, in more ways than one. Nevertheless, hiding the wavering in my stance, I hold my ground to the big mutt. "Do what you want to me, but I will not let you hurt my friend."

He grabs me by the shoulders with a death grip, turning me around to face him, ass presented. "Who said you were letting me? I do as I damn well please! Now, make sure to squirm for me, bitch. I love it when they squirm."

Everyone's crowded around the spectacle, including Loren, a look of disgust in his eyes. He almost looks like he's about to do something, but his shy nature gets the best of him, and he shuffles back into the waiting crowd. No one dares try to intervene, what with the sheer size and strength of the Canis in question. He's just about to thrust forward, and tear my leather jeans in two, before Kat latches onto the Canis's back, tearing deep, bleeding wounds into his furry hide. He promptly lets go of me, struggling with Kat on his back. I immediately take advantage of the situation, and kick the Canis square in the exposed crotch, sending him straight to the floor. His face collides with a slight crunch! as he lands, his testicles looking like swollen tomatoes from my swift kick to his groin. Loren squeezed his way through the crowd, giving me a rather firm hug for a bird his size.

"Are you two alright? I was so worried!" Loren exclaimed in chirpish glee. Kat sheathed her claws, unlatching from the jerk of a Canis' back, before grabbing the mug of rum the Canis had trouble with, downing it without a second thought.

"Well, look who's the bitch now?" Kat said in a smug tone she did nothing to hide. The Canis stumbles to his feet, pushing Kat and Loren out of the way to get to me. He stares me down for a minute, before laughing hardily and extending a hand, er...paw out to greet me. "Well, I'll be damned! Haven't had a fight like that in ages! Name's Reed."

I'm rather reluctant to shake his hand for obvious reasons, one being he just tried to kill and/or rape me, and the other being his almost casual expression, like it was perfectly okay what he just did! After my reluctance faded into slight irritation, I extended my hand to greet his, and damn was his grip strong!

"R-right....name's Jarrod."

The others are as dumbfounded as me. Guy tries to have his way with Kat, then me, and now he's acting like he's my best friend? I couldn't say I understood it, but at least he was being a good sport about things, even if Kat could be seen grinding her teeth together. "Sorry about before. I get a little ornery when I'm in rut. So, Jarrod, you seem to handle yourself well, for a human. How's about a friendly wager?"

I look at him, even more dumbstruck than before. "Uh, w-wager for what?"

"To prove you're not a bitch!" Reed laughs casually at his own reply, as if everything he was saying isn't making him look like a complete and total asshole right now. "You know about the cave, east of Sol, right? Big one, huge damn cavern."

"What's that got to do with anything?" I question him.

"There's something inside there. Something big, I'd guess you. I wager you to go in there and find out what it is. If you do, you'll have earned my respect."

I eye him curiously. "And if I say no?"

Reed starts to look a bit more devilish in his facial expression, a wicked grin creeping across his face. "I knot you like the bitch that you are."

A part of me thought this was crazy. That I should just walk away from this. Another wanted me to lay this guy out where he stands, but even with Loren and Kat's help, there'd be no way I'd take him down for the count. But the whole of me...wanted to prove him wrong. To wipe that smug look off his face. It ate at me, until I finally nodded my head in agreement.

"Alright, Reed, you've got a deal!"

Kat immediately intervenes, looking at both me and Reed with vicious contempt. "Jarrod, have you lost your fucking mind?! He just tried to-"

"Are you coming along, or aren't you?" I say to her, obviously trying to dodge another rant from her.

"Grrrr...oh, alright! But only to make sure you don't fuck up or get fucked up!"

"I'm coming along too!" Loren interjects, quickly recoiling. "Th-that is to say, I'd be r-rather lonely without you guys.."

Reed nods his head, shaking my hand as firmly as ever. "And I suppose I'll follow along too. Never know when the little kitty cat will need a big, strong man to protect her..."

"Fuck you too." Katrina rebuttles.

We set forth the night after, me with my traveling gear, consisting of some padded leather clothing, and my old shortsword. Katrina bugs me the whole trek over about taking it with me, but you never know, do you? The creature in that cave can easily be hostile. Loren is less readily equipped, taking nothing but a book and some tinkering tools. As for Reed, he's big, shirtless, and bulky as ever, lacking in anything protective-wise, not that he'd need it; his pecs can probably smash a boulder on contact. The four of us venture in, unsure of what to expect.
