Chapter 1 - Beginnings

"Where do I begin? Where do I end?"

It is true that everyone has to grow up at one point, stepping out of childhood to youth or stepping out of youth to adulthood. For some, it is very easy while it is difficult for others such as the main character. Some know what to do and doesn't need any help while others need a lot of but who is to decide this other than oneself? Family has its role but emotions play the largest out of all possible parts.

A windy night in December kept someone up as he sat up in bed and leaned against the wall for support. Breathing hard as if he just had a nightmare, didn't make him fell any better he sat in darkness trying to calm down. On a wooden table, near the door that leads into the room, rested a piece of paper and pen. Scribbled on the very first line is "Who Am I?" The following reads as so:

"I am Leo Lionheart, age 15. As my name depicts, I am a lion. Standing at about six feet, I tower over my classmates but with a kind face. Mane cut to resemble human hair as it goes no further than my shoulders with the color of soft gold. Goldenrod and light brown is what my fur appears. Soft blue eyes, sometimes sapphire in broad daylight, shows my softness and my true self, a person full of sadness."

It is December 10, 20xx, as Leo stay awake until day break. Weary as he is, Leo got out of bed and prepared from school at 6:00 AM. Grabbing his gray messenger's bag off the floor, he proceeded to the desk and stuffed the paper and pen in quickly before dropping the bag on the floor again.

"What's the point? I end up turning in something else anyways," mumbled Leo.

Moving towards a white dresser, two drawers wide and three drawers high, Leo pulled out a cell phone which he kept in his pajama pockets and slept on it absentmindedly. At the dresser, he pulled out dark pull jeans and a light blue dress shirt before changing into his new clothing.

"Fuck this shit!" shouted Leo throwing the phone across the room.

The force was strong enough to break the phone as it slammed against the wall, parts flying in many directions. Luckily for him, no one was home to hear any of what just occurred in Leo's room. There was a large mark left behind on the wall but Leo quickly covered it up using post it notes. Without cleaning up the broken phone, Leo grabbed his bag and left the house without making a visit to dental hygiene.

The clouds outside was just as weary as Leo as he dashed down streets towards his school barefooted. He bobbed and weaved past a group of people swinging bags around followed by a large group of student running the Associated Student Body (ASB) but here were more like snobs when you talk to them. People looked at him as he passed by and didn't seem to notice the bare feet. Not stopping for any rest along the way, Leo made it there in only 10 minutes with time to spare. The school is large with many old buildings repainted in red, white, and blue like the American flag. Coincidentally, the school is named Independence High School.

"Leo! You're here awfully early," said a cheery voice.

Leo turned his head to see a female jack rabbit running his way as she pushed people to the side to make room. Dressed in bell bottom jeans and a brown long sleeve shirt with a smiling sun, she leaped into the air only to hit a branch on accident using her forehead.

"I told you to stop doing that," said Leo walking towards the dazed jack rabbit.

The jack rabbit sat on the ground rubbing her injured forehead before springing back to life and onto her feet. People walked passed her afraid of what Leo might do if they offered to help.

"You could have at least warned me you big dope," said the jack rabbit as she stood up and dusted herself off.

"You missed a spot," said Leo flicking her forehead.

"Ow!" exclaimed the jack rabbit covering her forehead and moving to squat down in an imaginary corner.

"Serves you right," said Leo turning around and walking towards the school.

"Wait for me!" exclaimed the jack rabbit as she dashed after Leo.

"You forgot your shoes," shouted Leo as he entered the school's campus.

The jack rabbit stopped in the middle of the street, looked down, turned red, and dashed away from campus towards home for her missing shoes. Leo continued walking on the smooth, cold ground as he made his way around small pods of talking people and directly through a large herd of canines. Since it was on 6:30 AM, the school was usually empty at this time but a rumor about a famous actor appearing at the school on that day was buzzing around a few days before.

"Hey kid, mind if I follow you?" asked someone in a gruff voice behind Leo.

"Sure, do what you want," responded Leo without looking behind him.

He only had to walk a few feet before everyone started screaming around him. The stranger swore and dashed off ahead of Leo with a crowd close by. Leo stopped to prevent from being trampled on accident as people surged by him, some hit his shoulders on accident but that didn't create any large reaction.

"Shout I or shouldn't I get involved?" thought Leo as he finally exited the crowd before resuming his aimless walk.

Finding a nearby bench, Leo sat down and stared into the open land before him which is only a strip of land between two buildings and a few trees around the strip. The bench was cold as ice when Leo placed his back against the back rest maybe because the color of the bench was blue.

"Should have thought about a jacket before I left," mumbled Leo.

"He could hear the screaming people a ways of as the sound rose and fell sporadically. The crisp air nipped at his nose as time slowly passed by only for first period to begin. A few people passed before Leo but didn't show any interest in him.

"Hey! Mind if I sit by you?" asked someone.

"Go right ahead," answered Leo.

The person sat down next to Leo followed by an air of silence between the two.

"You look so gloomy that it's, like, killing my happy vibe," said the person waving his arms before him like paper blowing in the wind.

Leo turned his head and looked at the person. A boar, about the same age as Leo, is seated next to him. The red fur is a nice shade that is not too dark to be thought as blood nor too light to be thought of as raw meat. The color also stood out amongst the dark blue jeans and purple sweater. Around his neck hung a Cross of Christ and a peace sign.

"Is there a problem with that?" asked Leo darkly.

"Hell ya! I go to touch what's his name's clothing so I'm super happy," answered the boar leaping off of the bench and landing in front of Leo on both of his hooves.

"Take a step forward," said Leo not looking at the boar.

"Why?" protested the boar.

At that moment, the famous actor passed behind the boar as the crowd grew louder and louder the further away the actor was from both Leo and the boar. The boar only turned his head at the sound of the screaming crowd. Before he was able to do anything at all, the crowd ran him over and trampled him halfway through. The wind, during and after the crowd disappeared, blew Leo's hair directly to the right, almost completely horizontal as the boar twitched on the ground.

"You okay?" asked Leo.

The boar just continued to twitch at the unexplainable pain he was feeling.

"I think you got hit by the head cheer leader," said Leo.

"Really?!" exclaimed the boar jumping back onto his hooves as if he never got trampled.

"No, it was one of the Goth girls," responded Leo.

The boar jumped back a couple of steps in disgust.

"You know how much I hate the Goths!" exclaimed the boar.

"Take a few steps back," said Leo.

"Why should I?" fumed the boar.

Just as he asked the question, the famous actor passed between Leo and the boar but in the complete opposite direction from earlier. The boar turned his head slowly as the crowd approached quickly. The crowd trampled the boar yet again due to the boar's slow reaction time just to leap out of the way. After the crowd passed, the boar wasn't moving so Leo stood up and placed his hands together to pray for the deceased and the departed.

"May Jerry's soul rest in peace," whispered Leo.

"I heard that." snapped Jerry getting up on all fours before standing up to his full height of 5' 10".

"Well you weren't moving," said Leo grabbing his bag. "What time is it?"

"Um...7:00 AM," answered Jerry after checking his cell phone.

"Thanks," responded Leo strapping the bag across his body and walking away from the bench and Jerry.

"Hey! Don't leave me all alone!" shouted Jerry.

After Jerry shouted, the famous actor crossed paths with Jerry once again and Jerry expressed a grim face knowing full well of what was going to happen next. The crowd trampled Jerry for the third time this morning but if anyone listened closely to Jerry before he was trampled, they would clearly hear the word "fuck" being spoken under Jerry's breath.

Leo walked towards a building that was repainted over the summer. The building is E or the music building as it is clearly acknowledged throughout the school. A set of blue double doors facing the entrance is what Leo walked through and entered what is known as the band room. Just to the right of the entrance are cupboards for the woodwinds and brass instruments while practice rooms were on the left. During first period, the room is used for the symphony orchestra which consists of both band and string music players. The floor is carpeted that in the middle towards the back wall, the floor dipped down by five steps. Music stands, chairs, drums, and people were scattered around the room but it didn't cause any problems when it came to moving from one side of the room to the other. Finding a comfy corner, Leo sat down and rested his head on the wall before dozing off until class was over.

Deep within Leo's bag are crumpled up pages with writing on each of them at different times during his current year as a sophomore. The page, that was stuffed into the bag in the morning, rested at the very bottom against the canvas long with the pen. A crumpled page that is worn rested onto top of the fresh page.

"I have seen the light and the dark which is not easy to come by. There are things that have plagued me and I wonder why. Am I something that can be played with like a kid's toy? Maybe I am but that doesn't make me feel better. Where am I in this world of the most and the confused?"
