ch five

A few miles down the trail, the trail ended at a tree. I put the disk in my pocket, and the trail disappeared. I tried walking past the tree, but was stopped by some unnatural force. I guess the path wasn't just to the forest, it was to the tree. I turned to it, scanning every inch with my fingers.

There.

I felt a notch, about the size and shape of my thumb. I looked closer, and found the rest of the hand. I pressed my hand in the spot...

Or I was going to, but then I heard two people thumping through the underbrush. Well, one was, but the thinner one was sneaking up rather well. I only knew he was there because of were the sound bounced off of him.

Zelda saw the alarmed look in my eye, and I nodded to the other side of the trail, and she moved into the bushes. Soon, the two boys stumbled into view. I recognized them immediately. Mightos and Bairda.

Bairda was looking irritably at Mightos, who, as I said before, was quite loud on their approach. I calmly stepped behind him, and shouted, "Boo!"

He started, and Bairda smiled. That's as far as his humor goes, that smile. But that's ok. "What are you two doing here?" I asked. "We might ask you the same thing," Mightos replied, "In fact, why are you here?

I looked over at the bush that Zelda had hidden in, and she stood up. Mightos gasped. Bairda just stared. "She looks just like the paintings..." he whispered.

"That's cause we're related," she said, "I'm the king's daughter."

Bairda started examining her, like some sort of art critic over a statue. Finally, he backed up. "She smells like the queen," he stated, apparently pleased.

Zelda wasn't. "You smelled me?!? Disgusting!"

"That's just how he identifies people," I reassured her, "Kinda like a dog."

"Hey!"

I went back to the tree. "If i disappear, explain to them what happened," I told Zelda. She nodded. I pressed my hand into the indent, and I felt a slight tingle spread into my body from the tree. suddenly, my face started to tickle. My nose, especially. I licked it to make the tickle go away, but it persisted.

Wait, licked?!?!

I licked it again, and I distinctly felt a long tongue run over my nose, like that of a dog, or a wolf. as soon as I thought the word "wolf," the changes seem to explode out from my nose. my ears, as pointed as any elf's, started moving to the top of my head. I itched at the back of my neck, as fur started to sprout on my back and chest. I felt the prick of a needle on the back of my neck, and I looked at my hand. my fingernails had turned black, and had grew to points. my neck grew a little bit longer, and my hair grew shorter, at least on the top of my head. On my cheeks, neck and chest, it grew longer, like the fur of a wolf.

Again, the thought of the animal brought on other changes. my fingers shortened, and my feet grew longer, and longer. That's when I noticed that my legs had taken on a more wolf-like shape. and that's also when I noticed a shooting pain, like someone had grabbed hold of my tail bone with a pair of pliars and yanked hard. I howled loudly, needing to release the pain that I felt. then my face exploded outward, becoming the snout of a wolf.

Soon, all of my clothing, weapons, and supplies disappeared. I stood as a wolf, powerful and terrifying.
