#9 of Close Combat

Mimi followed him, with luck nothing rotten was aimed at her. She had brought a small jar of honey with her. She didn't have any at the den, stupid humans took her honey. Time was following close behind him owner. Mimi had also put Sol's jacket in there. Along the way her ears were kept up and alert. She didn't need his brother attacking them.

The trip took about six hours. Shorter then normal but Mimi had gone up to the highlands often so she had gotten use to getting there and found shortcuts along the way. She thought about stopping by her parents place. It was on the way. It would be nice to stop and say 'hi'

By now they where in the high lands it was just about another hours walk to her den. There was a small cabin, not far from the two. She smiled as she started to run towards the small house. She as running fairly fast, she looked back to Sol. "Just going to see my parents! I'll leave the door opened!" she called out and she opened the door and walked in. Everything was the same, well there were a few minor changes. Extra pictures hanging from the wall and other things. Mimi just felt lucky that her parents were still living. Well almost all her friends had parents who died when they where young.

She saw her dad asleep on the couch and her mother was making something in the kitchen. What ever it was it was a present smell. Her mother noticed Mimi walk into the house. 'Goodness I haven't seen you with your fur like that for years" Her mother was the normal red/orange colored fox, along with her dad. She didn't look like them well almost. Her mother had yellow eyes just like Mimi. "What are you doing out here?"

Mimi guessed telling the truth would bring more trouble. "Solaris and I decided to stay out in the highlands for a bit." Well it was somewhat true. She just realized that she just told her parents she was with someone.

Mimi's mother just looked surprised as her tail quickly flickered. Well what's she going to think when Mimi was seeing someone and her parents knew about it. "You're pregnant!?! Altec, Hun, Mimi's pregnant!" Mimi was just blushing but her fur covered it. "Well isn't your mate going to introduce himself?"

"Mom!!!" She panicked "It's nothing like that!" Well this was just embarrassing. Her ears lopped. Well that was mom jumping to conclusions. "I'm not pregnant..." Well that was just odd to say. She didn't even know if Sol had heard everything.

Her father sat up and looked over to Mimi. "Well let's meet the lad then." He got up from the couch. "Ask what he plans on doing after you have your cubs."

Mimi let out a sigh, it was one embarrassing thing "Dad!!! I'm not expecting or anything like that." So much for hopping by to say 'hi' this just became some embracing family reunion. Well it just seemed like her parents weren't even listening to her.

Sol followed Mimi to the cabin, walking in and closing the door. He watched the little family reunion and almost laughing at their conclusions. He shook his head at the irony of it all and looked at Mimi's dad. "Hello, sir. My name's Solaris. My friends call me Sol for short." He leaned against the wall and looked at Mimi. "Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not Mimi's mate yet. And she's not pregnant, either. I helped her out...." He paused, wondering if Mimi's parents knew about her pit fighting. "while she was working. She got hurt so I carried her back to her house. I don't much care for the cities, I'm a free-range fox myself, and so we decided to come to the Highlands." Sol stretched, yawning. "She wanted to drop by and say hi and, well, here we are." He smiled and looked over the two anthros that were Mimi's parents. They were average fox color, reddish brown, and seemed old, though he couldn't for the life of him guess their age. Sol crinkled his nose, sniffing loudly. "Whatever you've got cooking, it smells delightful. It wouldn't happen to have ham, lettuce and..." He sniffed the air again, "I'm not sure.... Is that pineapple?" He tried to get the attention off of Mimi. He could tell she was embarrassed. Then again he would be, too, in her shoes. Or paws, as the case may be.

He looked at Mimi's father. "Uh, Altec, right?" He pushed off the wall, standing at full height. "Mimi must have been a handful when she was a cub." He smiled. Hey, just because he loved her didn't mean he didn't enjoy embarrassing her. "Must have been a full-time job keeping up with her. I'm tempted to ask you your secret, but then it wouldn't be much of a secret, would it?" He chuckled and walked to Mimi, kissing her cheek before walking back towards the door. "I'm sorry if I seem a little rude. I can't stand being in enclosed spaces for too long at a time." He opened the door and walked outside, leaving them to family matters, or whatever. He leaned against the outside of the house, looking at the view. He walked a little ways away, soaking up the sun. It felt good to be back in the open again, away from the polluted air of the city. Then again life in the wild was a bit dangerous. Sol froze as he heard something. He spun around, hands already going to his guns, but he was knocked off his feet by what seemed to be a giant ape with hair problems. Grunting, the fox used his attacker's movement against him and threw him off. Landing on two, Sol spun around and watched it stand up. "Well, this is new." He muttered. "No evil clone of me trying to kill me, no stupid cat with a serious need for an attitude adjustment, just me and a monster intent on killing me." He dodged to the side as the whatever it was leapt again. This time he brought one footpaw up, contacting with its abdomen. He back flipped and landed, rushing forward and bringing his fist up against the thing's jaw. It roared in pain and staggered back.

Sol looked at his knuckles, which were bleeding. "I guess I shouldn't have hit that wall." He thought aloud, dodging a swing of the monster's claws. This was getting out of hand and, despite his need to get his excess energy out, he would rather not get hurt at the same time. He drew both guns and let loose five or six shots altogether. He watched the creature crumple and fell on his arse. "Well," he gasped, holstering his guns and looking at the sky. "That was quite enough excitement for one day. Gimme a break, wouldya?" He stood shakily and walked back to the house. "I'm back." He called in as he opened the door and walked inside. "And I could use some bandages." He never really carried bandages. He used magic on the big things and usually let the little things bleed until they stopped. But for once he felt like getting his right paw wrapped up. He just hoped nobody would comment on the X shaped scar on the back of his hand.

Mimi's parents where both in there mid-40's, her mother didn't look like she was that old but her dad did. Well Mimi's mother tended to make sure she kept herself looking young.

Mimi watched Sol leave before looking back to her parents. She smiled weakly and her eats twitched. "So where's Cou?" She asked wondering if her sister was still in the highlands. She wasn't going to visit her, she just wanted to know.

Her mother let out a sigh "What do you think she's doing?" Well Mimi already knew if that was her moms reply. Mimi shook her head, she wished her sister would to not over do it, it wasn't healthy. Well it was her sister's choice to mate with every guy in the forest not hers. "I won't tell her that you're in the highlands." Her mom confirmed.

There was a pause among the three as they heard gun shots. "Don't worry... he's probably stressed out." She said wondering if Sol's brother was here. Her dad just looked at Mimi. Like he was worried that she was hanging out with someone with guns. Then he looked to Sol who had just entered the house. Mimi hurried over to Sol "What happened?"

Her mother smirked and headed towards the bath room. Not because Sol had hurt himself, just the way her daughter had reacted. She came back with bandages. "Where all out of ointment, sorry." Well her parents did watch her sister's cubs every now and then. They would end up hurting each other in the end. She noticed that Mimi was licking his cheek but Mimi had stopped when she noticed that her mother was back.

Sol shrugged and glanced outside. "Remember earlier, when I hit the wall? Well I just hit another." He whispered, making sure her mom couldn't hear him. He smiled and took the bandages. "Thanks," he said, wrapping his hand. "I think you guys have one less annoyance. Unless, that is, you had a huge monkey-monster thing as a pet." He cut the excess bandage off and handed it back to Mimi's mother. "Thanks again." He rubbed his sore hand and looked at the parents. 'Nice folks..." he thought. "Hey," He said, looking at them both seriously. "If you see a fox with the same clothes I'm wearing, only black, and dark gold fur, run. He's my brother, but we couldn't be more different. He's insanely powerful and seems to have a taste for blood." He sighed. "We have family problems. He thinks I should be more like him, and he doesn't seem to like that I'm not. He shouldn't be coming through here any time soon, but if you do see him, get word to Mimi. She'll get word to me. But whatever you do, no matter how much you want to, don't confront him." He paused, thinking. "I know what you're thinking. Don't worry. As long as Mimi's with me he won't attack. Despite his blood yearning, he doesn't enjoy physical pain. He ran off when I inflicted pain upon him." He nodded. "As soon as I hear about him, I'll come and drive him off." He smiled briefly. "My family has a lot of problems, doesn't it?" He joked. He licked Mimi's cheek. "I'm sorry if I seem a little tense. It's just I met him for the first time a few days ago and, even though I know it's ridiculous, I keep expecting to see him around the next corner." He sighed. He had to warn them, even if they thought he was mad, or tried to split him and Mimi up. Two lives weren't worth one, no matter how much he wanted that life.

Mimi nodded, if she was younger her parents might have tried to stop her from going with him. She looked over to the front door. "Well I think we should get going" She said looking over to Sol then her parents. She smiled then padded over to the front door. She thought it was better to leave before they changed there mind. She might be old enough to make her own decisions but that doesn't mean parents won't step in.

She looked around outside then when Sol was with her she continued on closing the front door. She didn't look back to her parents place "We should reason the den in about an hour or so... maybe less" She wouldn't tell her parents what had happened to her house.

Her mother let out a sigh. "We should have stopped her. What if something bad happens!" She said but Mimi's dad shook his head. "Let her go her own way, besides we can't watch over her forever." He said then they went back to what they had been doing.

It took about an hour like Mimi said before they reached her den. Well she had made it underground. She got onto fours and crawled inside. It was a narrow tunnel which was about 7 feet long before it opened into the hallow. There wasn't much. Just a few folded up blankets and some clothes. It seemed like everything was in place so she curled up into a ball. She would let her paws rest for a bit before getting back up.

Time went in last and did the same as Mimi but he feel asleep.

Sol followed Mimi into the den. "Cozy." He said, smiling. "Entrance is easy enough to defend." He lay down next to Mimi, licked her cheek, and closed his eyes. "Let's fix everything up tomorrow. My pads are killing me." He yawned and, taking a leaf from Time's book, fell asleep.

Sol glanced around, wondering where he was. It was twilight, Sol's favorite time of the day. He yawned, stretching. Around him he could feel Mimi and Time, but he couldn't see them. "I must be in a light sleep. Feel but no see or touch." He reasoned, standing. He took a few steps forward and stopped. Something didn't feel right. He reached for his guns, only to find they weren't there. Instead he had two knives of black metal. He looked around as he drew them. Something definitely didn't feel right. A sound behind him, and the fox swung around, knife humming. He grunted and pulled his hand back, barely avoiding stabbing Mimi in the neck. "Mimi! Don't sneak up on me like that!" He gasped. She disappeared, and he sighed. Another sound behind him made him turn. "Mimi, stop pl..." He grunted as he was knocked backward into a wall. In front of him stood his brother. "Hey bro!" He said, sneering. "Thanks for the guns, I needed them. Oh, and thanks for the meat." Sneering widely, the fox turned and walked off, dragging Mimi with him.

Sol grunted when he awoke, sitting upright. The smell of earth overwhelmed his senses. "Just a dream..." he muttered.

Mimi had fallen asleep shortly afterwards. Well she felt safe down here, the entree was well hidden so most people wouldn't even see it. Her ears relaxed as she rested her tail on Sol. She had the normal dream. She was playing fetch, same open field, same boy, and the same stick. There was no nightmare so she didn't wake up.

Time had woken up when he heard Sol say something. He opened one eye and looked over to him. "What happened?" He asked his tail crackled, but Time didn't get up he just laid there looking at Sol, then looked over to this owner. She was still asleep, he yawned lifting his head.

Time didn't have many dreams, well most of his dreams where him sleeping, rarely did anything happen in his head. When they did it was the nightmares. Him while he was still a kitten and watching his mother die, then killing his own kin from his rage. He stood up and stretched out his paws, and yawned again.

Mimi's ears twitched, wondering what all the noses was. She yawned as her ears picked up, but she kept her eyes closed. She hadn't noticed that Time and Sol where up.

Sol glanced at the cat, then stretched and yawned. "Just a dream, nothing you need to worry about." He stroked Mimi's tail once, then stood up and walked to the entrance. "I'm going to for a walk. Tell Mimi I'll be back soon if she wakes up." He slipped out of the den, then out of the tunnel. He looked back at the entrance and memorized the layout of the land so he wouldn't get lost. Then he walked off, tapping on the occasional tree as he did. As soon as he found a tree with just the right density he drew his knife. The black blade absorbed the light, seeming to suck it in. Shrugging, he searched the tree until he found a weak point. He took a step back then ran the blade into the tree. Then, leaving the knife where it was, he walked to the opposite side, found the weak point, and kicked it. The tree shuddered and snapped, then fell, leaving a clean cut. Quickly Sol retrieved the knife and made the stump look like something had blown it down, not cut it. Then he cut off the smaller limbs for firewood, later. Throwing them into random piles, he made them look like they'd been cut down long ago and left to rot. He looked at what remained of the tree and sighed. "We're going to need an axe." He muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. He was planning on making a sort of door halfway through the entrance tunnel, to keep heat in and intruders out. Then he was going to make a vent that they could open and close to control how warm or cold it was in the den at any given time. But that meant he needed to cut this tree into logs, and that meant he needed an axe. Why couldn't he just use the same skill he'd used to bring it down? Because gravity was no longer on his side.

Mimi woke up about 15 minutes after Sol had left. She yawned as she rolled over onto her back, and then sat up. Time had fallen asleep when Sol had left but Mimi didn't know that. She noticed that Sol was gone. "Not again" She muttered her ears lopped. She hoped he hadn't gone away for good. She nudged Time forcing him to get up "Where's Sol?" She asked

Time yawned and looked at his owner "Don't worry he went out for a bit, he said he would be back." He replied sleepily. He then went back to sleep, with a putting that followed shortly afterwards.

Mimi nodded as she crawled out of the tunnel and reached the surface. She looked around to see if he was near by. She couldn't find him and she didn't want to venture out far from the den. With Sol's brother on the loss he could be anywhere. She thought it was safe to stay at the den. She turned around and crawled back inside.

She curled up by Time and fell rested but she didn't fall asleep, she kept her eyes on the tunnel, waiting for Sol to come back. Her ears where up and alert listen for other sounds

Sol sighed and gathered up the firewood. No use leaving them out here and risking them getting wet. Shrugging, he set off towards the den. It didn't take long to find it, and when he did the set up a little shelter a short ways from the entrance and put the logs there. Then he crawled in, shaking wood chips from his fur. "I wonder if there's a village nearby I can get the axe from..." he thought aloud, not yet noticing that Mimi was awake. "Or maybe there's one here. I didn't really have time to check... Hmm..." He sat down next to Mimi, absently rubbing her back. His thoughts suddenly veered towards his brother. How long would it be until he thought of looking around here? Probably a while, but in case he DID come by, Sol wanted some kind of defense up. He yawned and lay on his back, still rubbing Mimi's back. It was getting to be a habit... But he knew it was a habit Mimi would like. She didn't seem to get massages all that often. He sat up and yawned, stretching, then looked at Mimi. He blinked. "You're awake?" He asked, surprised. He laughed and rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm sorry, I was so caught up in my own thoughts I didn't notice you were awake." He smiled and curled up close to Mimi. "You wouldn't happen to have an axe, would you?" He asked as an afterthought.

Mimi smiled as she sat up, leaning against him murring lightly. "I don't have one, sorry" Her ears lopped put they quickly picked up. She nibbled on his ear a but tugging it lightly. She this thinking about who might have an ax. Her parents didn't have one. She couldn't think of anyone who might have one.

Time yawned looking over to his owner. He shook his head wishing his owner would be careful about how close she got to someone. Well there was nothing he could say, His tail crackled and he yawned again.

"So why do you need an ax anyways?" She asked, She saw little need for an ax, Well Mimi didn't know what he needed it for also. She wrapped her tail around him and stopped nibbling on his ears to lick his cheek a few times before she nuzzled his arm. She stopped hearing Time hiss. "Fine..." She muttered. Her ears flattened back. Well she understood that Time didn't need to see this.

Her ears relaxed as she looked at Sol. "I think there's a small market about an hours walk from here. Maybe they got one there." She knew the store carried traveling supplies so there might be an ax in there.

Sol shrugged, glancing at Time and cuddling Mimi. "I was going to make a door and vent, to control temperature." He smiled and ran a finger lightly down her spine. "I could also make some support beams so that would keep the walls from caving in." He nudged time lightly with his foot. "But the vent and door would have to be fire hardened. And seeing as I don't see a fire pit or anything..." He left the rest to hang and nuzzled Mimi. "I'll check out the market later." He said. "Right now I just want to sit with you..." He licked Mimi's cheek and smiled. He wanted nothing more right now than to be close to Mimi. He wondered what they would do with the leftover wood. Well, it wouldn't be fire wood. Their bodies would make plenty of heat in the confined space. And it wouldn't be for fences, because for now he didn't want to give anyone any evidence that they were here. The risk that his brother would find them was too great. Sol sighed, shaking his head. There was nothing they COULD do with it. Unless.... He COULD shave it and use the wood shavings for a little more insulation. But then they might overheat during the summer months. He rubbed the back of his head. It was getting so confusing. He licked Mimi's cheek again and smiled. "All I want to do is sit with you..." he said again.

Mimi murred lightly "Thanks" She smiled as she snuggled up to him a bit. She didn't care if Time was watching. She was wondering what Sols brother was up to right now. Was he hiding or looking for them? Well it wasn't worth worrying about. Sure getting killed wasn't much fun. "I think a door would be good, but we might be moving around a lot..." She let out a sigh. She didn't like going long distances. She licked his cheek before getting onto fours and crawling through the tunnel. She looked over to the river which was only a few yards away.

Mimi grinned and made a bee line for the river, the current wasn't strong so it was safe to be around. She jumped in happily, oddly enough Mimi liked water, she just hated the whole waiting for fur to dry part.

Time followed his owner, he sat by the entrance. He didn't like water. The only time he did go near the river was to get some fish. He just watched his owner along with keeping a look out for any unwanted guests, besides Sol.

Mimi looked over to Time. She stuck her tough out at the cat and dived back under the water. Well Mimi was no fish so about ten seconds later she resurfaced.

Sol followed Mimi out and sat watching her in the water. He laughed. "Just like a cub." He said, smiling. He looked at Time, then, shrugging, stood and walked casually to the river. Turning, he looked at time. "If glances can kill..." He started, before grabbing his chest, eyes widening, and falling backwards into the water. He sank to the bottom and dug his fingers and toes into the mud. He was fairly good at holding his breath, and last time he'd checked he could hold it for about 18 seconds, maybe a little more. But that was a long time ago. The mud displaced by his fingers clouded the water, making him practically invisible. He moved slowly towards Mimi, a smile on his face. As soon as he was close enough his hands shot out and grabbed her sides. Popping up out of the water, he took a deep breath and gasped, "Gotcha!" Laughing, he swam as fast as he could to the opposite bank, in an attempt to keep out of her range. "Sorry, did I scare ya? I didn't mean to...." He put on his best innocent face, though he couldn't mask his smile. "It was time's fault! He tried to kill me with a glance!" He pushed himself under the water again, digging up mud frantically. If she was going to get her revenge, she had to find him first. He almost started laughing, but held it in and swam downstream with speed he didn't know he had. He popped up a few yards away. "Wow.... I move fast...." He said, looking around him. He didn't know that he could move that fast underwater. "I'm a regular ol' otter!" He said, laughing.

Mimi yelped when he had grabbed her, but started to laugh afterwards. She turned around seeing him pop of the water. She smiled as she pushed herself into the water and swam towards his direction. She resurfaced taking a breath, but she saw him a yard away. "Get back here!" She laughed and went back under. The current had down most of the work, even if her fur was causing a lot of drag.

She resurfaced and tackle/hug. She licked his cheek a few times them smiled as she went back under and went back up stream. Which was a lot harder then going down. She managed to resurface about two yards away from where she had 'attacked' him. She looked back to see if Sol was still there.

Time shook his head, he remembered that they didn't have any food for tonight. He padded over to the river but he made sure he was far enough from any surprise attack. He starred down at the water for a minute before swiping his paw at the water and a fish came flying out. Time quickly make sure that the fish didn't flop into the water. He blocked the fish until it was dead, then went back to looking at the river and swiped the water and killed the fish like he did before. He did this three more times before he brought the fish back into the den. He returned back outside and sat by the entrance like before.

((Bam, another one in, what, 20 minutes? I'm good. Next up comes 3. Hmm... I'll wager I'll get everything down within 3 hours.))
