Chapter 2

Marley

I woke up the next morning. Time for my usual schedule. Get up, take a shower, go to the track, do my training exercises, academics, battle combat, gun training, obstacle courses, and finally, sleep.

I repeated this process for 8 years. It does not seem to be letting up, but rather pushing down. Every day, the training gets worse. Only the obstacle courses and academics were easy to master. I wasn't much of a physical guy, more of a engineer. Or a scientist. I excelled in long-range shooting, medium ranged shooting, short ranged shooting, and even close combat. You don't need brawn to defeat your enemy. You just need to be fast, and smart.

The next afternoon, I was doing my obstacle course with a team. It included a girl named Sasha, a boy named Kennedy, another girl named Gretel, and me. Our goal was to go through a course that consisted of concertina wire with live rounds firing, a rope climbing wall, a rock climbing wall (both over 50 meters high), and at the end, you had to run through a field with live rounds firing at you. At the end, you had to climb a pole and ring a bell. First team that gets there gets luxury food, and other items for the week. This was my hell.

When the horn signaled our start, I ran to the concertina wires with my team. One of the live rounds came so close to hitting me, it landed just off the split of my fingers. I ducked my head, getting a face full of mud, while machine gun fire went right over my head. I got out and looked back. Sasha just got out of the wires, and Kennedy was right behind her. Gretel had gotten her leg caught on one of the wires.

"GET DOWN!!!" I yelled over the machine gun fire. It was barely audible. Sasha and Kennedy sprawled on the ground and covered their heads. I crawled back to Gretel and untangled her leg. "COME ON!!! WE NEED TO MOVE!!!" I yelled again. Gretel nodded and followed me out. I got Kennedy and Sasha up. We ran as fast as we could to the rope wall. I looked around and saw we were in last place. "We're in last! Come on, pick up the pace!" I yelled back to the team. We climbed the rope wall as fast as we could, earning us another three spots ahead. We did the same on the rock wall, earning us five spots ahead. Upon Gretel reaching the ground, she strained her ankle, and cried out in pain.

Without question, I picked her up using the firemen's carry, and ran across the field with the rest of my team. We ran past four more teams and reached the pole.

"You need to climb. This is the last part." I said comfortingly. She nodded and climbed the rope. All my team members reached the top and rang the bell. I finally got there and rang the bell as well.

Once my feet hit the ground, the Drill Sergeant approached us. "Officer on deck!" someone shouted. Everyone stood at attention. The Sergeant stopped in front of me.

"Your team reached the bell first. Even with an injury." He looked at Gretel. "Marley, you are promoted to Petty Officer. You will lead a small team. You will be their commander. Do not fail me." He walked away. Everyone stared at me. 'Petty Officer... I am going to be a leader...'
