#3 of Mist and Shadow

Short chapter. Kind of rushed. >.< Life is stress and panic attacks and oh my god why I knew this was going to happen syndrome. But anyway!

More peeks into the mind of Shadow. That's always fun, right?

"You have got to be flippin kidding me."

I stared blankly at mister Litch. He looked somewhere around how I did, I think. Irritated, mad, wanting to strangle someone. Though I think he was feeling that directed towards me.

"Cant you just, like.. Throw us out again or something? Seriously. I'll take whatever punishment you feel fit. Just please, don't be this cruel." I whined.

Misty elbowed me and shot me an evil look. I could tell by how she was acting that she knew. Not only knew, but was okay with this. It must have been in the letter. Been why she stopped reading it and seemed to get so distant for a while. I couldn't imagine why this was something she actually was okay with.

"This is not a punishment, Shadow." Mister Liych replied, he distaste clear in his voice. "I do not get to punish you for your insolence, apparently. Just as you do not get to keep a room with just your sister. Luci will be moved into your room upon arrival tomorrow."

I looked back at Misty with a pained look. I really, really didn't want a roommate. Let alone a boy. And I didn't want to be his caretaker. I was Misty's keeper. I didn't need another lost and emotional fur under my care. Not that I could say that, of course. Misty knew what I did for her, but she didn't like to admit it. And I decided the reason she was okay with this is because she wanted to feel like she was doing some good for someone.

I scowled then turned and stormed out of his office, leaving Misty standing there. She spoke with Litch for a few moments longer before running after me and grabbing at my wrist. I was in a fowl mood, but I still slowed for her, my ears pinned back.

"I don't approve." I told her shortly.

"I know, but he needs us. You know how hard it can be for new kids here. And if Fox is right.. Then he wont know how to be around other furs, let alone people." She replied softly.

I stared at her for a long moment, wishing she didn't make sense. If we hadn't had each other, I don't think ether of us would have made it here. Most of the other kids got along well enough when they came here. Most of the furs here were accepting to all the newbies, and did their best to keep them safe and teach them. But it was still overwhelming at first. Granted me and Misty were in the first group that ever came here, and things have changed a lot since then. But I would imagine the fear wouldn't have changed.

I just continued to stare at her for several long moments. My mind was racing through many things, everything that would change after this. But it kept going back to one question that was on my mind.

"Why are you so happy about this.." I eventually asked, suddenly feeling very tired.

Misty smiles a little at me, her odd smile that she did when she knew other people wouldn't understand. This made my heart sink a bit. And I couldn't help the thought that It was because of me, and she wasn't happy with things being just us anymore.

"Because Fox asked me to.. And if we take care of Luci, Fox said he was going to come visit us to check in on him.." She answered quietly, as if she was saying something wrong.

I just nodded and took her paw gently in mine before starting the trek back to our room. Misty tried a few times to start a conversation, but I wasn't really in the mood. Of course that's why she was happy about it. Of course that's why she's willing to let a stranger into our lives and put him under my care. Fox was the big brother she never had. The handsome, strong, immature but still kind and could turn into a leader at a moments notice. She idolized him, I knew that. He had saved us and taken us in. Protected us, for a long time. But I didn't understand why she couldn't just look at me that way.. I mean I know that she'd do anything for me, and that I was the most important person in her life. And she in mine..

I shook my head to clear my thoughts. Fox was sort of the same to me, but without the special relationship he had with Misty. And I knew that relationship existed because she was the one who needed it. And I shouldn't let things like that bother me. If Misty wanted to look after a puppy, then fair enough. I would do my best to help her.
