#3 of Comfort Zone

Continuing on the story of Matt the Husky in the world of seeking a partner. Roughly halfway through this story now. I actually just intended this to be two chapters long but I'm using it as practice. I'd very much appreciate any feedback possible to improve on my writing as it's hard to analyse it myself. There is no 18+ material in this entry just some plot progression. There will however be plenty of it in the next chapter so don't worry.

Matt the 20 year old Husky was having some problems. He was suffering some sexual frustration which he believes to come from his lack of a relationship. He'd prefer for it to be based on mutual interests but his body was taking out this frustration by masturbating to his male friends, something he'd rather not do. You see, Matt was somewhat of a worrier. He'd worry over simple stuff very few others would. The mere thought of thinking of his friends in a sexual way made him feel uncomfortable.

To solve these problems Matt had made the decision to leave the comforts of his college room and seek a mate. Seeking a mate was not necessary but doing so would allow him to see if he would like to spend the rest of his life with somebody or not.

It was Wednesday Morning and the sun decided to smile on the light blue of Matt's small room walls and on the soft brown carpet. One of the best things about the room was how the sun would light up the half of the area which was opposite the bed. Matt found it a nice scene to relax in his bed while the morning was bright, just one of those small delights.

The Husky let out a big yawn and sat up in bed. The covers were warm and inviting but work had to be done today. There was a Literature paper to be done by Friday.

"It might be better getting that paper done early. It'll free up tomorrow night."

The husky sighed and looked down.

"Maybe Rob could help me meet some people that night. It'd be cool to meet somebody who liked the same things I did."

There was a faint smile emerging on the husky's face. The blankets were quickly discarded and Matt began getting dressed.

"I mean, spending your whole life with somebody who you could tell anything to and do all kinds of stuff without being afraid of what they'd think."

The very notion of a relationship would have been something easily dismissed last year but now it seems like a good time to start searching for somefur.

The rotating chair in front of the desk turned around and Matt took his seat, ready to work. English Literature was always something he'd enjoyed and any spare money would go towards buying books or graphic novels. Meeting the actual authors was something he'd always dreamed of but a slight discomfort when talking with others that aren't in his circle of friends was quite difficult for Matt. Last summer he stood outside the bookshop as J.K Howling signed books but was too shy to ask for a signing.

However, despite how long Matt contemplated on how much he liked Literature, this essay wasn't going to write itself.

"I do have all day after all. I did half of it yesterday so I shouldn't have to push myself"

As Matt stared at the blinking vertical line of the next paragraph he remembered the lecture Monday. He chuckled a little at how Victor, the German Shepherd Professor, had opened up the wrong slideshow. The slideshow was showing various book signings by a lot of authors Matt enjoyed.

"This essay is pretty bland. I don't think he'd mind if I spruced it up a little"

Keys on the keyboard clicked quickly as the husky typed out this now spruced up essay. He inserted some puns involving book titles by authors the professor had met. It was a funny idea to the husky. Hopefully the professor would also find these poor attempts at humour amusing.

Looking around the bookshelf beside his desk Matt picked out various titles to somehow work into a sentence. It was a lot harder than he thought it would be but at least it made the boring task more enjoyable.

Hours passed and the sun coming through the window shifted so that the whole room was now in shade. Just then Matt paused and took pride in signing his assignment and clicking "Send"

The chair creaked as he sat back and put his paws behind his head in joy.

"I hope he enjoys it. It's gonna be a shame not having him next year for any classes, he always corrected our work in pretty big detail, not criticising but it felt like he was genuinely helping us"

Without thinking, the Husky opened up his emails and sent an email to the professor thanking him for the past two years.

"I'm really glad I got to sit in your class for the last two years. From the very first day you've always been dedicated to us and I really appreciate that. I still remember the day you gave me a week extra for the assignment when my grandmother died. You even gave me some notes to help me. So I'd just like to thank you for everything and that the whole class will miss you next year."

It didn't feel right to press send just yet. Maybe a quote from a book would be nice to end this email with.

"Of course!"

"It's the same sky even if we're worlds apart", a very famous quote from "Tailess plunder" the sequel to "Captain's Tail". It was a quote Matt found very memorable.

Matt was now really happy after pressing send. Hopefully the professor would get this and not think of it as too sappy or emotional. Maybe it was Matt just over thinking things but since saying thanks to the professor wasn't a common thing people talked about during the final weeks maybe it wasn't socially acceptable. But these contemplations were cut short when somebody started banging on the door.

Dave, Matt's wolf roommate, opened the door and some muffled conversation could be heard.

"Whadya want cougar?"

"Nice to see you too David. Matt here?"

The door opened and the wolf stared at Matt, signalling him to go to the door.

It was Rob. He seemed pretty happy and dressed up for a night out.

"Oh hey. How's it going?"

"Everything's cool man. Well maybe not for your roommate. I think he might have something stuck up his ass, not the nicest fur."

Matt chuckled, Rob was always a funny guy.

"So we were going out tonight for this guy on the football team's 20th. It'll be pretty quiet though, he's not one for clubs."

Matt thought to himself, "This might be the time to talk to Rob about my problem. Maybe he could introduce me to some people at the party?"

"Y-yeah I think I'd like that. I don't know the guy though, he wouldn't mind would he?"

"Nah it's a small gathering. Just a few drinks and laughs. I'll meet you outside in an hour. It's in the pub, don't wear anything to fancy."

The cougar gave him a little wink and then waved as he walked down the corridor. The wolf sighed with frustration and slammed his door. He didn't really like Matt or any of his friends, what a grouch.

Matt knew of what it was like in pub parties. The smell wasn't the best and it got hot after awhile. For the occasion he wore a pale blue shirt but black pants which were loose enough as to not be too warm on constricting. It was more about comfort really plus this didn't make him stand out much.

A cool breeze blew through the air outside the dorms as the sun set. It was still bright but getting darker and darker. Both of the boys made their way to the gates of the college and to the pub which sat neatly on the corner of the town. It was a small beige two story building, dim green door and window frames. The second floor was where the owners stayed.

A small bell chimed as Rob opened the door, followed by Matt. Inside was bigger than expected and many furs were sitting to the right in a little corner section. There must have been about 6 or 7 of them. The bar was straight ahead across the wooden floor with a finely dressed Lioness tending the bar and there weren't many people on the left side of the room but a very faint mumbling could be heard from them.

Rob pulled Matt over to meet the furs in the corner. They seemed awfully happy and were smiling and cheering.

"Yo, sorry if we're a little late. I didn't see your text about the time change"

A large saint Bernard stood up and greeted Rob with a hug. He was massive. Well that may be an exaggeration but he was at least 2 foot taller than Rob and Matt. He spoke with a deep but very mellow voice.

"Nah it's jus good to see you. Thanks for coming, and you brought a friend"

He looked over and extended his paw to Matt. It was pretty awkward since Matt really didn't know how to respond, he just shook his paw and avoided eye contact. It was a very energetic and strong pawshake.

"This here's Matt. He's a pretty cool guy, just kinda shy. Matt this is Benny, he's on the school's team with me and the guys"

Everybody took their seats around the corner table, Matt and Rob sat on the very end of the cushioned brown seats. The lioness brought a round of drinks for everybody and they all cheered. Rob stayed with Matt for most of the night making sure he wasn't left alone. This would have made it an excellent chance to talk to Rob if there weren't many other people around.

"So if I can't talk to him on his own maybe I should just try to casually bring it up. It shouldn't be so weird then, right?"

"Hey man, you've barely touched your drink. Trying to be the responsible drinker I see?"

It was clear from his breath and his tone of voice that Rob was starting to get a little drunk. Now or never. Matt tried to play it off calmly and held his drink while he tried to sound charismatic,

"Well I was thinking that I might try and get out on the scene, y'know? Maybe speak to a few more guys and explore a bit"

This was the first time it was ever confirmed to Rob that Matt was gay but his attitude didn't change. He wasn't even phased.

"Nice to hear it man!" Matt got a few pats on the shoulder. "Look I'll see if I can help you. Wouldn't feel right to let you run about all willy nilly not knowing whatsa going on"

He wasn't making sense but Matt let out a sigh of relief. That went much better than expected.

"Thanks man, I appreciate it."

Just then a chime went off and a silhouette moved across the glass divider. On the other end came a fine looking German Shepherd. It was the English literature professor, Victor. Matt was stunned slightly, he'd never thought he'd see a fur like that in here. He was alone and waved to the bartender as he took a seat in one of the two seater tables with the hard wooden chairs.

One quick gaze at the current party could tell that they weren't too keen on talking to Matt so he made his way over to the professor with his drink. The floor boards were a little sticky on the paws probably because of some spilled drink, a mild annoyance.

"Um, hello. Professor?"

The dog looked up from his bag to see the husky. He smiled.

"Ah yes, Matt. Good to see you tonight. Please, take a seat."

Well mannered as always. The professor was always a gentleman. It made it easy for a shy dog like Matt to talk to him.

"I-I never would have expected to see you here tonight. I was just out for a friends 20th and saw you come in. I hope I didn't interrupt."

The German Shepherd let out a soft chuckle.

"No not at all. Judging by the state of your friends I'd say you're not much of a drinker."

His satchel opened and he began ruffling around in its many compartments.

"Yeah I don't like the stuff too much, drink it very sparingly."

"Well as long as you know your limits. By the way I read your assignment. I had some spare time in the evening so i corrected a few students work." Matt's ears flattened with embarrassment. He hadn't thought he'd actually get a face to face about his work tonight of all nights. But the Shep was laughing so.

Matt thought to himself: "Wow it must have been super embarrassing. Why did I think that was a good idea?"

When the professor stopped laughing he wiped a little tear from his eye and looked into the Husky's eyes. "I thought it was pure coincidence but near the end of your essay I noticed the intentional references to some book titles. I must say, I never knew of anybody that made puns from such a serious TAIL." The professor was puffing his muzzle trying to contain his laughter at the pun"

Matt could only smile, "Wow that was pretty good. Captain's Tail is an amazing book. I'm trying to finish it's sequel right now actually"

He calmed down and looked enthusiastic about the mere mention of the series. "I'm glad you got that one. Surely not as good as the ones you made but an attempt nonetheless. I would regard the sequel as an excellent way to expand on the setting. It doesn't offer much in the ways of character development because of this but still a good read."

"I-I've noticed that. But I don't mind really. It doesn't take away anything from the overall story which is what I would have been.."

Victor pointed behind Matt. As he turned round he noticed Rob signalling him over.

"Oh, that's my friend. It was really nice talking to you. It'll be a shame when I don't have you next year."

Matt stood up and Victor said his goodbyes, "The pleasures all mine. You said some very kind words in the email. I don't get that from many students, and the kindness goes a long way. It was nice meeting somebody who'd heard of such obscure books. But go, your friend wants you."

Matt blushed slightly at how nice the professor was being. The bartender passed him as he made his way back, she was spilling some of the drinks with the way she walked. Well that certainly explains the sticky floor boards.

"Hey man, we were all going back to Benny's place." Rob leaned in close and whispered in Matt's ear. "Maybe you should tag along, I think I've got your solution."

Matt was a little sceptical at what the drunken feline was saying but when everybody started getting up and leaving it didn't feel right to not follow them. They drunkenly stumbled out of the pub, Matt gave on last wave at the professor as he left. The air was much colder now and it was nearly pitch black.

"I've just gotta roll with it I suppose"

Matt followed the group through the dark. Maybe this would lead somewhere but it could also lead to a dead end. Romance was complicated and you may have to just dive head first sometimes. If it doesn't work then there's nothing you can do but take a step back, weigh out your options and keep searching. This was all running through Matt's head as he followed the loud, tired crowd. Pretty soon he would find his answers.
