#2 of SAVAGE WORLDS: Ia'Swaa

Another background piece to go along with the rules.

Sure, I only got one leg. But my life and my fate is not so bad, compared to some. I was a squirrel born amongst the fair folk, and had great comfort while a babe. The wild animals of the wood could never imagine what growing up with magic could be like. I even learned how to do some of it! Healing is complicated, but I mostly got it down. The fairies thought that I would make a fine champion to go into battle against the unseelie folk, so they outfitted me with a sword and I was ready to go. My world changed forever when I left the safety of the Earth Hollow.

The world was full of giants and monsters! Across vast plains of grass all around me, huge beasts stood docile and yawning, chewing grass placidly. Their fur was like the grandest fluffy hairpiece that any fairy princess could imagine. They barely responded to my calls in the tongue of the Earth. I realized that some greater power was at work here, and as my first adventure, decided to seek it out.

The beasts were being guided not by magic, but by a giant. He looked a great deal like the fairies, but was larger by degrees almost too terrible to contemplate. The whole of me could fit in her single hand, I was sure of it. It was not my place to take issue with a giant such as this, though- I had a much grander mission at hand, to slay evil.

I found the Unseelie hiding in a tremendous fortification, made of enough dead and dismembered trees to make you weep. I entered through the only entrance that I could find- it involved climbing down into a cave that was covered in black dust. The unseelie had cleverly set that as a trap, I could tell- when I tried to sneak quietly into the shadows, I saw that my bootprints had been left across the room, leading them directly to my position!

The Unseelie had tracked me without even trying. I unsheathed my sword and prepared for the inevitable attack. They came at me screaming, chittering, clicking and cackling. Their wings like insects, the four of them touched down lightly and started to cast their dark magic. I dodged a swipe from an axe, then came face to face with their mind powers, as I reeled with pain that came from no wound. I drove my sword into one of their hearts.

This was my first blood. The pale fairy drooped and fell to the ground. while one of his own fellows started to pry the gold off of his lifeless corpse, I halted and felt the pain rush through me. It vanished as soon as I tried to pin down where it was coming from- just like I was taught back home. I now had to come to grips with the fact that I had killed a living creature. My mind, which had all sorts of romantic notions about peace and remorse before, was clear for the first time in my life as the three remaining fairies started to advance on me.

I had to get them before they killed me. It was that simple. I raised my sword and chopped one at the arm, and it screamed and flew into the cavern I came from, vanishing. Now just two. I dodged the axe chop from the one, shook off the freezing pain that the other tried to grip my nose and head with. I struck out at the mage, and she fell easily, her new jewelry clattering out of her clenched off-hand.

It was just me and the barbaric Unseelie warrior. She struck me on the arm- a fine blow from a soldier that knew what she was doing. She Swung the axe at me again with suprising quickness, hitting my tail and bisecting it painfully. As she stood to one side, I brained her with the pommel of my fairy sword, then sliced her in half while she stumbled, her axe suddenly too heavy for her hands.

I was instructed to take the gold charms from the fairies if I found them. Indeed, these chittering monsters had six such charms among them. As I put them back into my vest pocket, I felt a wave of relief wash through me. I settled down next to the stone cavern, near some huge metal spikes. The healing magic I knew healed up my tail in a jiffy, making the pain vanish totally. My arm was different, though, still sore and shaky even after healing. I sheathed my sword and turned back to the tall tower of stone to make my ascent back to the outside, out of this gigantic space.

Then, it grabbed me by the leg. What was it? I couldn't tell you- but it was ten times as big as a fairy, had wickedly sharp teeth, and snapped my leg off in one bite. As its claws dug into my back, I quickly let my vest fall off and unsheathed my sword, chopping it on the huge, furry face and fleeing. Grabbing my sword in between my teeth and climbing with only three paws, I felt like I was going to fall with every grab at the dusty, greasy black walls.

Like I said, my fate isn't so bad. After all, I get to tell you stories and show you how to use a blade, right? And I couldn't ask for a better student. Who knows what you will see when you go out into the world?
