#9 of Dragon's Heart

I am attempting to rewrite "Dragon's Heart," seeing as I last worked on it over two years ago. Believe me, writing this made me CRY.

Fortree

A little boy sat playing in the middle of the living room, making sound effects for the stuffed Pokemon dolls in his hands. "Ppshhh! Gengar used Shadow Ball! It does nothing to Rayquaza, who fights back with a blast of Dragonbreath! The Gengar faints!"

The little boy was suddenly thrown into a fit of laughter as a pair of hands came from behind and started tickling him. "Dad uses a surprise tickle attack, and it's super effective!" the hand's owner cried out as the pair of humans started rolling around on the floor. The pair of them were practically a matching pair, with golden-blonde hair and shimmering green eyes; although the younger of the two had more blue-tinted eyes.

"What is going on here?"

The older of the two wrestling humans looked up and saw a fairly young, brown haired girl standing in the doorframe, looking at the two of them bemused. The older one looked up and smiled. "Hi Laura, how are you?" he asked happily as the young boy squirmed out of his grasp and began tickling him back.

"Gotcha Daddy!" the boy said, grinning as his father rolled back onto the floor in mock terror.

"Ahh! Nooo! Don't, don't, I give I give!" the father said as he began laughing at his son's antics. Laura had to smile at the sight.

"So, Ray, how was work?" she asked, turning away and heading into the kitchen. Ray chuckled as he pried his son off of him.

"Oh, the usual," he said. "My boss is happy, and the rest of the company didn't have anything to report as of late. And I'm here at home with you both."

Laura had to smile at Ray's remark. "Well, I am making spaghetti tonight," she said. "As I recall, you seem to have developed a particular taste for my cooking."

Ray smiled as he looked at the Pokemon battle his son had just recently finished. "So, Rayquaza won huh?" he asked his son. The boy nodded. "So, why did Rayquaza win?"

"'Cause Rayquaza's awesome," the child replied. Ray smiled widely.

"And why is Rayquaza awesome?"

"...but isn't Rayquaza always awesome?"

Ray chuckled as he looked at a photo of Laura from several years ago. "Yes he is," he commented. "Okay Comet, you keep on playing alright, I'm going to help Mom make dinner for tonight."

Comet nodded as he picked up his stuffed Rayquaza. "Okay Dad," he said, turning to head to his room. Smiling at his son, Ray turned and entered the kitchen. Smiling, he slowly walked over to his wife.

"Yes Ray?"

Ray stopped, bewildered. "How do you always know?" he asked her. "I can never figure that out." Laura chuckled as she set a pot of water to boil.

"Women's intuition," she replied, looking over her shoulder at him. "That, and I can hear you bending the floorboards." Ray shook his head as he finally walked over to her. Hugging her, Ray simply held her and breathed in the scent of her hair.

"I love you," he whispered to her. Laura smiled as she turned her head, giving him a peck on the cheek.

"I love you too," she told him. "So, what really happened today?" she asked, pushing him off and getting back to cooking. Ray sighed.

"Well, Mew pranked the heck out of Dialga using a bucket of glowing paint, a screwdriver, and a Klondike Bar," he told her. Laura stopped and looked at him. "Laura, I have at this point given up any hope of understanding my niece," Ray added. "Besides, she didn't have any sugar today, thank the heavens."

Laura hummed as she began chopping up lettuce for a salad. "Anything else, or does it have to wait for the table?"

Ray chuckled. "Nothing much else at all really," he said honestly. "Just me looking out for trouble." Laura snorted.

"Are you sure it wasn't you who started the trouble this time?" she asked him, pointing the knife at him. Ray eyed the tip of the blade.

"Pretty sure," he said casually, pointing it away from him. "So, how long until dinner?"

"Ten, fifteen minutes. Why?" Laura asked.

Ray shrugged. "Oh, just thought I'd take Comet out for a walk, you know, help him get hungry, you know?" he told her. Laura looked at her husband.

"Really? Are you sure it's not just to show off?" she asked him. Ray mimed being hurt.

"Laura, you act as if I was irresponsible! That wounds me!" he told her, smiling.

"Well, you are the one with the two rowdy siblings," Laura said as Ray left to take his son outside.

"Yes, well, most siblings can't cause the end of the world."

Later that night, after they had all eaten dinner, Ray and Laura were sitting on the back porch, looking Comet who was currently watching a Pokemon battle on TV. Ray looked over at Laura. "So, any thoughts about joining the Elite Four?" he asked her. Laura sighed.

"Yeah," she said tiredly. "I'm not joining them." Ray looked at her, shocked.

"What? But why?"

Laura smiled as she looked at her son. "Because Ray, our son is more important to me than battling. I want him to have a normal childhood, not be pestered the paparazzi everywhere we go. Don't you want him to have that sense of normalcy?" she asked Ray.

Ray gave her a look. "Laura, because of me, he isn't going to have a normal life," he told her. "Trust me, in my family, we don't have 'normal.' We simply have varying degrees of insanity." It was then that he stiffened, his eyes glazing over.

"Ray? Ray, what's going on?" Laura asked him, worried. Ray shuddered as he finally came to.

"Latios...he's dead," he whispered, shaking. Laura gasped, horrified.

"Isn't he a Legendary like you?" she asked him. Ray nodded.

"Kind of. More like a little brother, but yes," he told her. "Ho-oh wants us all to meet at the Hall. We need to talk about what's going to happen with Latias. Laura...I...I'm sorry...."

Laura looked at him, and then at Comet. "Ray... what are you going to tell Comet?" she asked him. Ray shook his head.

"I don't know," he whispered. Getting up, he walked over to where Comet was and sat down. "So, who's battling?" he asked.

"Mightyena and Raichu versus a Nidoking and Gyrados," Comet answered. Ray smiled sadly.

"Comet?"

Comet looked up to his father. "Yeah Dad?" Ray sighed as he hugged his son close.

"I just got a call from work," he told Comet. "The company called me, and well... they want me to move to a new location for a while." Ray pulled back and looked down into his son's eyes. "While I'm gone, I need you to be the man of the house for me, alright?" Comet smiled and nodded.

"Okay Dad. Hey, will you tell me about all the Pokemon you see?" he asked Ray. Ray smiled tearfully.

"Of course I will kiddo," he told him. "Now let's get ready for bed. You have school tomorrow."

A little while later, Laura and Ray were outside, Comet asleep in his room. "Laura... it's going to hurt me, being away from you all," Ray whispered, holding his wife close. Laura nodded.

"I know," she replied. Separating, Ray backed up and transformed. Laura shielded her eyes from the glare, and when she looked back, she saw the brilliant emerald serpent she had captured on the top of the Sky Pillar all those years ago. She hesitantly took and held out the very Pokeball. "Pokeball... release!" she commanded. At once, a blue burst of light enveloped the Rayquaza, and soon dissipated.

Rayquaza crooned as he gently nudged Laura towards her home with his snout, his golden eyes shimmering in sadness. Seeing Laura head home, he flew straight up into the night sky.

"Goodbye Rayquaza," Laura said, tears running down her face. "I love you."
