#1 of The Heat Under the Ice

A story between two lovers...

(Story belongs to Arctic Ursa and characters belong to themselves) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They walked together, it was a cold snowy night up on the mountain. The two arctic animals padded along closely, the fox leading the bear by the hand. Their breath drifted in the air, like soft white smoke, the snow crunching softly under their feet. "Where are we going again?" the bear asked, looking around. "You'll see when we get there, so stop asking" the fox replied, tapping the bear lightly on the nose. Smiling, they both continued on, silhouetted by the light of the moon, like ghosts in the darkness. They moved farther up the mountain. A few more minutes passed, the stillness of the night covering them like a blanket. Wandering through a forest of small snow capped trees, they came to a small clearing with a cabin. The cabin was made of wood, and from the outside you could clearly tell it had been there for quite some time. The wood polished smooth from the winter snow and wind grazing it. The shingles, made from a nice pitch, resistant to the snow. The roof itself was built well enough to hold a foot or two of snow easily. "Here?" Asked the bear, his jaw dropped in surprise. The fox simply nodded, unlocked, and pushed him through the front door. The inside was luxuriously furnished for such a small cabin, The chairs had been well used, but were large and soft to the touch, the windows had been well kept, you could clearly see the mountain from all four sides of the open night. There was a good modern kitchen, with a stove, microwave, and a freezer fridge. But then his eyes wandered over to the bed, the one bed. "Hey, there's only one bed" The bear pointed out. "Of course, we'll be sleeping together" he replied. "Oh" He said, blushing a little. They had known each other for a few months, but it felt like they might as well have been together for years. From the day the bear had met the fox, he had always had a crush on him, and as it turned out, the fox had liked him back. They had never really spent the night in the same bed, so he was excited. "A whole week together on this mountain, sounds wonderful" said the bear, unpacking and grinning. The Fox apparently didn't here what he said, because he was still busying himself with making sure they had what they needed for the week. "This place is really beautiful, eh?" he said, trying to keep the conversation going. "Yea." was all the fox said, his mind obviously elsewhere. Shrugging off the silence, the polar bear got back to work on unpacking, getting his shorts and shirts into his part of the drawers. He couldn't help but look back at the fox, his eyes drifting down, following his tail. The fox quickly turned around. "Can I help you with something?" the fox asked. The bear quickly turned away, blushing vibrantly under his white fur. "Uh...N-no" he said, his voice shaking a little. The fox turned back to work, his tail swaying now and then as he organized the cabin. The bear would always look back at him. Every time the bear started watching the fox, he'd barely avoid getting caught by turning and making himself look busy. The fox knew the bear was watching him, and every time he would just giggle to himself. They continued to work for an hour or two before the fox was startled by a grumbling noise. "Sorry, we have been at this for hours and I haven't had anything to eat since lunch" The bear pointed out. Suddenly the fox's stomach growled to and they both broke out laughing. "Looks like my tummy agrees" the fox said, still snickering a little. They walked shoulder to shoulder into the kitchen, still smiling at each other. "Let's see what we have." the bear said, opening the cupboards. "Hmm..." The fox mumbled. Wandering over to the fridge he opened a drawer. He had bought a special treat for the bear. "Now would be as good a time as ever I guess" as he pulled out two steaks. Sneaking up behind the bear he wafts them around behind him. Suddenly the Bear's ears perked up as he sniffed the air. "I smell..." He said turning around "Steak!" He jumped up a little. "Where'd you get those?" he asked? The Fox smiled cleverly "It's my treat to you!" he suddenly blurted out before leaning over and kissing the bear. They stared into each other's eyes as they kissed, both enjoying the moment and wanting it to last. The bear wrapped his arms over the foxes shoulders as they kissed. After a few minutes, but to them it felt like seconds, they broke the kiss. "We should probably get these fired up, eh?" Said the bear, looking hungrily down at the steaks. "Yea, no sense waiting I guess" the fox said with a smile. They started up the burners and cooked the steaks in the oven, letting it cook for an hour. "So, we have an hour, what should we do?" the bear asked. "Oh, I can think of a few things" The fox said grinning.
