The Great Escape

Soala, this is the nickname I gave to Surfacers gave me when I installed here. They have no idea how to pronounce my name correctly. Been 3 years I was on the surface. The fresh air, uncommon food and even the Sun please me.
The Surfacers seems a bit scared of me at first and then they completely forgot my presence. Better this way.
You must wonder "why" one of my kind wanders here? For a kobold, I was a bit... different. I always wanted to travel around the world. The underground wasn't a place for me. I wanted something new, different and have tales of my adventures. I didn't write many of them, but this one should be my most recent adventure, I should name it "The Great Escape". It started four months ago...
I was living with the Surfacers. They did appreciate when I was playing and singing in the bar. They had no idea of the elegance of the draconic rhymes and texts, I guess they were pleased to hear me. I had more than a kind of tricks to display : juggling, riddles and such.
My personal favorites involved gambling. When drunk, it's easy to trick the Surfacers and get extra spare coin. I always had the "trick" to win in card and dice games. Well, I do let some of them win, just so they think the lady luck shine upon them. Easy.
Today, there was a strange guy in the tavern. A human with long ears, an elf, I think. He didn't stop looking at me when I was doing my tricks. I don't think he was looking at me like any anyone else in the public.
Anyway, it was time to get some coins. The big one was easy to trick. The beer I gave him with his own money was enough to cheer him up after his losses. Then there was a little guy, a little taller than I. I didn't fall for his painted coins. What a waste of my time. Then the strange guy, the mysterious elf, I think, wanted to try my little game.
Since he was a new guy, I did feel a bit "generous". I let him win the first round, just to let him be confident. I think he was a gambler, luck games didn't seem uncommon for him, by his look. I let him win the second round. I lost the coins I got today. "Feeling lucky? Come-on and try your luck, Lizard. Double that!" he said to me. The "lizard", I hate it when people call me like that. Anyway, he will be so sad when he will lose those precious coins in the next round.
I used my trick, I know I had the winning hand, easy coins with that annoying guy. He did look way too confident, maybe he's bluffing, like the others. "Try your luck again, Lizard!" he said before showing his cards. He's starting to piss me off with his attitude and... his hand? He had hand I had... "Wait!" I said, I did take a look at my cards, they changed. I don't know what happened. "It seems that you lost again, Lizard. Want to try your luck again? Double that!" he said. I have no idea why, but I did play again. I lost the bet.
It was like if my trick didn't work at all. I couldn't lose that much gold. I... I had to run away... but I couldn't, I had to play again, I couldn't do anything. "Seems like you're out of luck, Lizard. How do you plan to pay me now?" he said. How did he know I couldn't pay him? This guy had something beyond my understanding. My tricks failed me.
"Poor little Lizard, did someone stole your sweeties?" he said. I was angry, but I couldn't tell a thing. What happened to me? The other customers watching the scene were laughing at me, I wanted to flee, but I couldn't.
"Since you cannot pay, I got a job for you, Lizard. Is that your name? Lizard?"
"Yes... it's my name, Lizard..."
I couldn't control myself. I don't know what happen. I don't like what happen.
- "Good, Lizard. Some outside, I got a job for you"
We left the place. I don't like this, I just want to go, but I can't. Who is this guy, and why is he doing this. I don't understand.
- "Okay little Lizard, since you obviously unable to pay me, you'll have to find a way to pay me back. Any suggestions?" He waits a bit. "Come-on little guy, talk!"
He was laughing. He knew I couldn't tell a thing.
- "Then you won't be against what I planned for you. I need a little 'something' from that place" He pointed a manor. That place was highly secured. There were guards in front of the building and inside. "It's a jewel, let's call it the Black Diamond. If you bring it back, I'll forget about your debts. If you don't, be sure you'll be a slave, and no one will ever care."
A slave? I don't want to be a slave. But stealing from that place, that does look like suicide.
- "So does the little Lizard wants to bring me the Black Diamond? I'm sure you want to. I'll let you free to act, but be sure I'll know if you run away, Lizard"
After his work, I felt I could move at my will. This guy scares me. I don't know what he's able to, I'll have to make a decision : I'll try to steal the Black Diamond.
The manor was a big building for me. Why do they live in such a big place when they don't need half of it? Anyway, I had to break in the place.
There were two guards at the front gate, nothing to be surprised on that side. The courtyard is blocked by walls at least five times my height; this is going to be a bit of a challenge. It seems no one was near; I'll give it a try and climb. The wall was made of bricks, I had a good grip so I could climb it with relative ease.
On the wall, I could see two guards wandering in the courtyard. Yikes! I felt on the other side of the wall in a bush.
"Did you hear that?" said one of them.
"Hear what?" said the other one.
"I'll check it out" said the first one, walking in my direction.
Talk about bad luck. Okay, I had a trick for that kind of situation, I hope it will work.
- "Miaou..."
That's the first thing I had in mind, a cat. Maybe they will think it was just a cat who fall over the wall.
"A cat? I think it's just a cat who fall off the wall" the first guard said.
"Since when cats fall off the walls?" the other guard said.
"It happens. I have seen cats fall off walls before, poor little creatures" the first guy said.
"Should we put an end to his suffers?" the other guard said.
"Naa, I'm sure he will be alright." The first guard said, before walking away.
Good, now I can go... ouch... my back hurt. Okay, now I can go away. I just need to find a window or something to get in. I waited for the guard to look into the other direction before moving out of the bush.
There was a window near, it was partially opened. I could open it up; it wasn't locked.
Inside the manor, the lights were out; it will be easier to sneak inside. Where would they hide the Black Diamond? In a chest? Hidden in the walls? The Elf guy could have been more useful for this forced task. Let's do it quick, before someone could notice me.
The ballroom, the dining room, the hall, the kitchen, I give a quick look in each of those rooms : lot of silver plates, no jewelry. Time to get to the upper floor.
Mmm... I must be careful here, I hear something. Someone singing upstairs, a lady's voice, it's beautiful. I'll have to get a quick look at the other rooms before she gets out.
The first room is a library. I would have liked to read a book or two, but it's not the right time for. There was no jewelry here. I moved up to a second room. It looked like a bedroom. There was light coming from under another door in the room. I think it's where the singing lady is. I hope I'll get the time to check the place before she notices me.
Strange metal pieces, a book written in a language I don't understand and a few metal bracers. Oh? There was a little chest under the bed. As I go under it, the door opens. From my hiding stop, I can see feet moving in the room. Crap, please please please, don't look under the bed. What will happen if she finds me? The guards will surely turn me in.
I tried to keep calm on the floor and wait till she gets out.
- "For how long you're going to spy me?" she said. "Show yourself!"
Damn it, she knew all along I was down there. Maybe if I do get out she will let me go. So I get out of under the bed. In front of me there was a human lady. She was beautiful. She had long black hair, a tint from another region. She was slim and tall. She was wearing a dress make of red silk. I could lose myself in her green eyes.
- "What are you doing here? Creature" she asked me.
I was completely lost in her eyes.
- "Oh me? I'm... I had to..." I couldn't answer.
What's happening to me? I never saw such beauty in anyone. I... I know that, she's casting a spell. I... I can't resist...
"Are you going to tell me what are you doing here? You know you can't lie to me" she said.
"I'm... I'm here to steal the Black Diamond..."
"Why would you want such thing?" she asked me.
"I... I need to bring it to someone..."
"And who is this 'someone'?" she asked.
"An Elf..."
"An Elf? Tell me more. Don't lie to me." she said.
"There... there was an elf guy who tricked me. Now I'm forced to steal the Black Diamond or I don't know what will happen."
"You think that someone who can control you let you free just because you bring him a gift?" she asked.
She was right, I had no idea if he will let me got if I did bring him the Black Diamond. I was sad, very sad. What will I do now? Flee? He will know. I'm done.
"Do you know what happen to the one who break into the house of a noble lady? They end up with their hands cut down. Don't you want to lose your hands? Creature" she said.
"N-no, I don't. Please, I just want to leave this place."
"Then do so. I'm pretty sure the guards will appreciate that you tried to attack a lady of my rank" she said.
"I didn't try to."
"Who do you think they will believe? Creature" she said.
"... What do you want from me?"
Blackmail, I can't believe she's blackmailing me...
"Tell me who you are." She asked.
"Xyninshli Xyzshysli, but the surfacers call me Soala."
"Then, Soala, tell me about your race" she asked.
"Us, kobold, we come from the underworld. Most of us live in big communities, like a big family. But some of us, like me, try to get to the surface and live a different life."
"I see. Does your specie lays eggs? Or give birth like us?" she asked.
Give birth? I know that some creatures from the surface lay shell-less eggs. That would be so messy .
"Females lay eggs about two weeks after we mate with them."
"Do you mate with them for other reasons than spreading your race? Like pleasure or love?" She asked.
"Females don't always want to mate only for pleasure."
"What about love?" she asked.
"If you want love, you mate with a male."
"What about females who want love?" she asked.
"I don't know, I never asked."
She does look surprised. Did I say something wrong? I don't know. It's embarrassing all those questions.
"Did you often mate with a male?" she asked.
"Not often."
"When was the last time you mate with a male?" she asked.
"It was when I get to the surface with a friend."
"Tell me what you did, remember, you can't lie to me." She said.
It was when I made to the surface with a group of my kin. Kynishitli and I have been close friends, always looking for each other. He said that if we do make it to the surface that he will mate with me. On our first night on the surface, we've found a cave to set up camp. He was eager to mate with me. I got dressed up fast and give a last look at the lady, she wasn't facing me and she was pointing the door. I had to get out, fast. I run in the manor to get to the window I opened before. I took a look outside; it was clear. I get out of the place and climb the wall and left the place.
I want to travel somewhere else...
