#6 of Main Storyline - Children of Gaia - The Beginning...

After the team's dismissal, Jace, the otter known as Riptide, made his way back to his room. As he closed the door, he did not hesitate to take off his uniform to quickly discard it into the corner as he heads to his dresser. The room was rather nondescript with simple white walls, a single sized bed. The only real decorations upon the wall were some simple posters of world class male surfers on random spots of the wall, which would potentially reveal his sexual orientation. He opened up a drawer and pulled out a simple pair of surfer shorts and slipped them on quickly. He sighed in relief having taken off that skin tight outfit. Sure it was practical, but it didn't make it any more comfortable to wear.

Before he could go back into the drawer for a shirt, he heard a knock on the door. His brow raised as he grabbed a hawaiian styled button up shirt and quickly slipped it on, buttoning it up as he made his way to the door. He quickly opened it to reveal the smiling face of his lover, the arctic fox coded as Soulfox. Seemed he was able to change quickly, now garbed in a simple pair of blue jeans and a powder blue polo shirt. He also had on a pair of glasses designed to fit on his muzzle that he didn't have on during the mission, which implies he probably wears contacts.

"Ian?" Jace said with an obvious surprised tone to his voice.

"May I come in, Jace?"

Jace remembers to when the team was suiting up for the mission that Ian had something important to talk to him about. He simply nodded and let the arctic fox in without further hesitation. "Sure, come on in... Want anything? Soda? Water?"

"No thanks, Jace," Ian said with a shake of his head.

As Ian entered the room, Jace quickly closed the door and sat upon his own bed. The apprehensive look on his face almost look like worry, like he was expecting something bad to happen. Ian stood before him

"Jace, How long have you and I been together would you say?"

Jace rubbed his chin in thought as he looked up to ponder the question. "Let's see," he began. "You found me in 1999, but we didn't start dating until at least 2001... I'd say about 12 years."

Ian nodded in agreement, "That's right... 12 long years of dating."

"Is there something wrong with that?"

"As a matter of fact there is," Ian replied as he gently adjusted took off his glasses.

"Are you breaking up with me?" Jace asked with look that quickly morphed with sadness.

"On the contrary," Ian said as he reached into his pocket for something. "I believe we are ready for the next level Jace..."

"What do you mean?"

Before Ian gave a reply, he pulls out a small box from his pocket. Jace's eyes widened with surprise as the arctic fox slowly began bending down onto one knee. He slowly opened the box to reveal an elaborate engagement ring. the white gold ring was designed to look very much like a giant wave washing around the wearer's finger, with a bright sparkle of a turquoise sapphire caused the light in the room to start dancing within the otter's wide eyes. Jace couldn't find words to express how he felt at this moment as a single tear started to form in his eye.

"Jace Randolph," Ian started again, "Will you marry me?"

Jace tried desperately to catch his breath, "Wh... where are we going to get married? I mean there's only so much we can do."

The uncertainty was apparent in the young otter's eyes and voice. Ian simply smiled and replied, "It matters not to me... I want you to be my life partner and I promise never to leave your side. To protect you in sickness, and love you in health. To stick with you for better or worse."

Jace sniffed and smiled, trying to chase that tear away from his eye, "Yes, Ian. I would not have anyone better to spend the rest of my life with."

Ian pulled the ring out of the box and slowly slipped it over the otter's finger. Jace couldn't help but blush at the chivalrous display from his lover, then again, that's the only way the young arctic fox knew. The otter wrapped his arms around Ian's waist as the fox stood back up, and pressed his head lovingly against the fox's chest.

"Ian... I... I don't even know what to say. Where are we going to get married? What about the priest and..."

Ian gently placed his finger over the otter's maw gently and smiled warmly. "Let me worry about all of that... Just don't tell anyone about this. I don't know how they will react."

The Otter's eyes suddenly darted to the now rising sun outside. Ian looked to notice the young otter was suddenly deep in thought. Ian always hated to see him this way, it always led to some sort of depressing way of thinking. He finally built up the courage to finally speak up.

"Something bothering you?"

"It's gonna be harder for us? Not only are we mutanimals, but because we're gay..."

Ian sighed a bit and pressed the otter's head against his chest lovingly. "Don't worry about it dear..." he hushed softly as he stroked his lover's cheek lovingly.

"Ian... will our kind ever be accepted?" Jace managed to whimper out as a tear gently ran down his face.

Ian hated to see Jace this way. Yes the kid was emotional, but it was expected thanks to the way his family treated him when they found out he was gay. living for months on end on the beach. It was expected that the young otter to be very emotional thanks to his treatment.

"Don't worry hon. Someday we will get over this. Believe me"

Jace gently placed his hand over the white paw on his cheek lovingly. His eyes turned from the sunrise and stared into the young fox's eyes. "Since we're betrothed. Will... will you sleep with me tonight?"

Ian couldn't help but smile and kissed the young otter on the forehead. The two would soon find themselves under the covers of the young otter's bed and nestled together warmly. The otter smiled at the warmth of Ian's body as he spooned with Jace lovingly. The otter's eyes slowly slipped closed as he nuzzles gently into his pillow, bit Ian stayed awake, watching him slowly drift off to sleep. He was always the quiet worrier. He knew all the hurdles they would have to overcome. Closest state they'd have to go is Massachusetts to get married. Even then, they've no money. Dr Moreau pays for their lodging and food, everything around the house. Even if they did get up to Massachusetts, they couldn't pay for the licence or the man of the peace. What was worse, how would the rest of the team feel? A pair of homosexuals amongst them want to get married, it's already a hot button issue around the world. There's no telling what they would think. The arctic fox's thought process would eventually trail off as his fatigue finally sets in. He finally gives in to his body's needs as he snuggles close to the otter with a deep sigh and falls asleep.
