Origins Chapter 2: Separation

*My gaze was locked on the screen for several seconds. I was lost in my chaotic mind, filled with fear and confusion. "How could this be happening? Kidnapping fog doesn't just pop out of thin air...so why? Why is this happening?" Over and over I continued to question in my mind how this could happen. I guess in its own way my mind was seeking to rationalize this occurrence, even though I knew that was impossible. It wasn't until I felt a hand on my shoulder did my mind finally ceased thinking.*

Soulka: Miles...you need to see this.

*I froze for a few seconds then turned to see Soulka pointing out the window. Reluctantly I walked to the window and peered out. My eyes widened in horror as my gaze was locked straight ahead on the massive blue form heading right for us. Although that was something to fear, that wasn't what had me so afraid. What had me so afraid was the fog's location...it was right on top of the dorms across from us. It slowly continued to move forward until it had fully engulfed the building. My body was frozen in fear at the realization that those dorms are where Vance lives. Finally my mind fully registered the situation and I realized that the phone was still to my ear, but there was no sound...only dead silence.*

Miles: He...Hey Vance? You there!?...Vance? Vance!!! This isn't funny, answer damn it!!!

*Still nothing...dead silence. My hand began to shake and my eyes had started to water. Was he really gone? Vance...you're ok right? Once again it was the touch from my little brother that snapped me out of my trance.*

Soulka: Miles...we need to go. If we don't then that fog will be all over us next.

*My gaze went back to the window and while staring I noticed something. The fog had stopped as if...as if like an animal stopping to devour its latest catch. Soon I could feel my eyes beginning to water once more, but I stopped hearing the sound of people running and screaming outside. Realizing I needed to move I wiped my eyes, took a deep breath, and got in gear.*

Miles: Ok...hurry! Grab as much food and supplies as possible!

*Quickly we both grabbed our bags and piled in all the supplies we could fit. After the bags were full we immediately headed out the door running to the front of the dormitory. Bursting out into the parking lot we both paused at the sight of all the students and teachers scrambling for their cars. They were knocking each other over without a care in the world, fear was driving them now and their thoughts were nowhere. I turned my gaze back to the dorm enveloped in fog to see if it had started moving, it hadn't. It was still sitting in the same place, which was a relief but not a very good one as I knew what that meant. Vance was probably gone. My childhood best bud was gone and I was powerless to do anything to bring him back.*

Soulka: Oh crap, oh crap!

Miles: What's wrong?

Soulka: I forgot it! I have to go back and get it!

*Soulka dashed past me and ran back into the dormitory. I tried to run after him, but it was too late, he was already lost in the crowd of terrorized people.*

Miles: Hey Soulka wait! Come back!

*I stared up and horror wield up inside me...the fog was moving again and fast! Without hesitation I began to force my way through the crowd pushing anyone in my way, screaming Soulka's name. Finally I reached the door and banged on it repeatedly. Feeling around my pockets I realized my ID was gone! Damn I must have forgotten it inside, thinking I wouldn't need it! I peered inside through the glass door looking around hoping for him to return. It was then that I saw it; the fog was engulfing the dorms. I began to bang on the glass harder and harder calling out Soulka's name.*

Miles: Soulka! Soulka! Come on get out of there! SOULKA!!!

*I continued to scream even as the fog came closer and closer to me. I didn't move, I stood there banging and scream as tears began to pool down my cheeks. I fell to my knees as the fog over took our room, but still...there was no sign of Soulka. I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it...I couldn't. There was no way my brother could be gone! Once again the fog came to a slow stop and was stationary on top of the place I once called home. I stared inside, but couldn't see anything except the blue fog.*

Man: Hey get away from there! The fog will start to move again soon!

*I slowly turned around to see a man sitting in his car. I stared at him silent...not registering his words.*

Man: Hey I have room! Come on and get in!

*I continued to stare until my eyes wondered to the back seat where a bat was sitting. My gaze was locked onto it, until I slowly turned back to the dorms. Soulka...I slowly stood up, turned, and walked to the car stopping in front of the man's window.*

Man: What's up!? Come on your wasting time!

Miles: ...the bat...

Man: Huh?

Miles: The bat in your back seat...can I borrow it?

Man: What? My bat? What for?

Miles: Please...I only need it for a second...please.

*The man stared at me then reached in the back, grabbed the bat, and handed it to me.*

Miles: Thank you

*I turned and walked to one of the dorm room windows, where I stopped and peered inside. Nothing...I couldn't see anything, but blue inside. From behind me I can hear the man talking, but I'm too lost in my thoughts to register his words. I take a deep breath and raise the bat.*

Miles: Soulka...Vance...I'm coming for you.

I believed that everyone in the fog was alive and were just taken somewhere...somehow. If they had died then the cars that rolled out of the fog should have contained their bodies, but according to the reports the cars were always empty. That must mean someone or something had taken them! Soulka and Vance were alive, and I was determined to find them no matter what. With that I exhaled and swung the bat down onto the window, smashing the glass into pieces. The fog didn't move an inch, which meant I would have to go in myself. I turned and walk back to the man to return his bat.*

Miles: Thank you...You should go now.

Man: What about you?

Miles: Me? I'm going to save my brothers.

*The man stared speechless as I walked back to the window. Once there I hopped up onto the window seal and without thinking jumped inside the deep blue abyss. As soon as my body entered...everything went black.*
