Final Hope, Chapter 1: Abrupt Discoveries

Story by zSilver_Fox on SoFurry

Here's a small story I've been working away at for quite awhile (and by that, I mean a few minutes every once in awhile). If it gets good ratings/reviews/interest, I'll get chapter two out sooner (possibly).

All characters are (C)zSilver_Fox, and may not be used without permission and pie being given to yours truly (Strawberry-rhubarb or blueberry preferred. Cherry's ok).

And some useless thanks that everyone's going to skip over:

Now, let's get started, shall we?

________

Keir stood there, filling up the customers car. It was bloody -20* outside, Christmas Eve, and he was stuck working. All that kept him going was the fact that his boss was like his father.

The silvery-grey anthro fox put the nozzle back in the pump, and motioned to the LCDs on the pump, making a sign for money. It was too cold to do much else. The driver rolled down the window and snidely replied, 'This is a full service station, and I want full service. Clean the windshield and I'll pay.'

'Sir, it's too cold for that. The water will freeze before it gets anywhere near your windshield.' he replied.

'Then don't let it freeze, you furry freak.'

The fox just growled, and went to get the water bucket from the pump cubby hole. He hated customers like this. He did the best he could, only to have them complain about 'poor service' because they treated their cars like crap. He wondered how humans managed to survive...

He began to lift the rag out of the bucket, when something strange happened. Everything stopped... the hum of the lights, the sounds of passing traffic... it was as if time itself had stopped...

'Well well, you're looking mighty fine tonight.', came a feminine voice. 'It's 20 below zero, and you're standing out here with fingerless gloves and a tatty jacket. Might as well go streaking in Alaska; it'll be warmer there.'

The fox turned around and gasped.

Standing there, was another anthro-fox. Another like him...

She had beautiful silver fur, and grey eyes. Her body was well toned and built. She wore a rather warm-looking coat, and a pair of also-warm-looking pants, with some strange silver gloves, which he wouldn't of noticed if not for the bulk of them. She was, in a nutshell, amazing.

'Get your jaw off the ground.'

Keir abruptly closed his hanging mouth, which he wouldn't of noticed if not for her demand.

'So... you work for humans, you act as a slave for some, all in payment for shelter... you've really got the short end of that stick, bud.'

In a flash, Keir went from dazzled to angry.

'Chris isn't like that! He's been like a father to me!', referring to his boss.

At this, the vixen snorted.

'They're humans, they were assigned with the job of raising you. Nice job they've been doing...'

'What are you talking about?' asked Keir. She was making no sense...

The other fox suddenly turned soft-like, and held Keir to her in an embrace. Looking directly into his eyes, she whispered

'Everything you've believed, it's false. Tomorrow, you will understand. They have chosen for you already... we're among the last, Keir. We've being killed by other species, nearly to the point of extinction... but we're finally making a comeback. We're the last generation... the last hope... you will find out the rest tomorrow, when you embark.'

Suddenly, she released him, and walked off into the frozen night...

'Hey, freak, are you going to get done with this or what,' called the jock who was driving the car he was filling just moments ago... Sighing, he got back to work.

As Keir awoke, he heard the laughter of Chris' children as they unwrapped their Christmas presents. This only caused him to moan, as the anthro fox knew how disappointed Chris was when he was late to awake.

He quickly got himself dressed, and began to make up an excuse for sleeping in late. Pulling on his pants and and a shirt, he walked up the stairs to the living room, expecting hell from his boss.

'MERRY CHRISTMAS!', they all yelled as he walked into the room. Keir was taken aback from the sudden greeting. He stood there, shocked, for several moments, untill Mrs. Telgat, Chris' wife, broke him out of his trance.

'Well, aren't you going to open your present?' she asked as she handed him a large envelope.

Keir sat down in a corner in the room, facing everybody else on the couch as he opened up the gift.

Tears sprang from his eyes as he read aloud the words at the top of the certificate enclosed in the paper sheathe.

'Certificate of Adoption... This certificate hereby grants Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Telgat all parental rights and privlages... blah blah blah... in the adoption of the former Keir, in the becoming of his new identity, which is from hereon Keir Telgat...'

He was unable to read any more. He broke down crying, and fell into his new mother's arms.

Between blubbering sobs, he managed to say words of thanks. The one thing he had wanted had being granted to him by the people who had been like true parents, from the day they were granted him as a several day old kit, from the lab.

Wiping his eyes, Keir walked to the doorway and threw on his coat. He had to clear his mind and think about last night... was it a dream? No, it couldn't of been... was he hallucinating from all the gas fumes? Maybe...

'Keir, honey, where are you going?' his mother asked.

'For a walk... I... I need some time to think about events lately... I'll be back within an hour.' he replied.

'Ok, but no longer than that, or you'll miss out on the feast.'

Keir walked out and shut the door without listening to his mother's last words. He walked along the sidewalk, through the snow that had just fallen. What was it that happened last night? Must of been the gas fumes...

He had been walking for about 30 minutes when he heard a familiar voice...

'So, how did things go at home?'

He gasped. Time frozen again as the vixen appeared. This time, she was in naught but a sweater, and a pair of jeans. It was a bit warm today...

'You... who are you?'

'The name's Consera. Call me Ser. And before you ask where I come from, same place that you did.'

'The lab?'

'WHAT?! Where the hell did you hear about any lab? Wait... your 'parents' told you, right?'

Keir nodded, too surprised and confused to do otherwise.

'You've been fed bullshit. I'll tell you right now, you're not some science experiment gone wrong, nor are you from Earth, even. Hell, you're not even from this solar system... but one would expect you to know that.'

'What do you me-'

'Let me explain. A few hundred thousand lightyears away is a nice cozy little planet, Selana. It's there that we come from. Now, to give you a crash course in Selanan History 101, there are several things that you should rightfully know.

'One: Selanans are much more advanced then Earthlings. So are some other planets. These planets are dictated by power hungry beings.

'Two: Selana is massively rich in materials used for DT, Daerk Transportation... made by none other than an Selanan named Kala Daerk. This allows us to break the 'laws' that humans have claimed to exist regarding ultra-optic travel. As in, you can make the distance from Selana to Earth in a matter of hours. Naturally, these hungry planets are going to want resources for this kind of transportation.

'Three: Selana was attacked and invaded by the Scythe. Only a few survived the mass genocide... t-those that did were forced to work in the mines. There were cave-ins... almost every day. So many died...'

The vixen appeared to be tearing up. Keir raised his arm, as if to put it around her shoulders, only to have it swatted away. Ser wiped her eyes. and continued, a sparkle in her eyes as she spoke.

'But now, we're making a come back. There's a rebellion force of Selanans, known as the Silver Stryke. It's the best of the survivors, fighting to regain peace and defeat those who invaded Selana and various other planets. It's one of the only bits of resistance left.'

She continued,

'The SS is kept hidden and secret. We have outposts that you would never expect. Our main task force consists of fighters who don't know pain, fear, or emotion. They're the kind of people who would grab a plasma rifle, throw an ammo pack on, and stand infront of hundreds of enemies, only to laugh and fire away.

'We've only suffered a few outpost attacks, but those that do occur are tragic. There's a reason we only keep one or two people there at a time, and give them barely any information... salt baths without your skin sting quite a bit.

'Right now, we're preparing for the final attack. For the past several years, we've been working on infiltrating the Scythe. We got an operative in several months ago, and he's transmitted priceless data to us. The architecture of the Scythe HQ; the patrol routes; their armory; and all that crap. This will be our only chance at getting back. Most, if not all, of us are willing to give their lives for this moment.

'Now, I ask you: Are you willing?'

Keir was still having a bit of trouble comprehending all of this. All that he knew... that he thought... that he had...

'Listen Ser, or Consera, my life here on Earth is finally starting to look up. I don't need some inter-galatic war ruining the little enjoyment I have here, ok! You and your Silver Stryke force or whatever can go on without my help. For all I know, this is a fucking dream, or I've been around the gas too much. So, good fucking bye!' he said angerly, shouting out the last few words.

The fox turned and began walking off.

'So you think, so you think...' he heard Consera mumble. At this, he spun around, only to gasp at the fact that the vixen was once again gone.

'Whatever...' he said to himself.

It was at this moment that he heard the explosion. The sound that changed his life forever.

To be continued...

Update... changed Aspartia to Selana. Forgot to do that before.
