#8 of Furry and Proud

That awkward moment

Waking up that morning wasn't fun. I felt worried and confused. Thoughts ran through my mind like wasp at a nest. I was conflicted, but why? I know why I was freaking out. Victoria tried to hit on me, but it was okay. I stopped it, pushed her hand out of the way, told her I had a girlfriend and walked away. I did the right thing. Right? This was going through my head all morning.

Finally, I saw my friends, Jake and Ryan at the bus stop.

"Whoa, dude, you alright?" Said Jake.

I guess I looked worried. I definitely knew I was jumpy.

"Yea, I'm fine." I said. "Sorry, I just didn't get that much sleep this weekend."

Jake pat me on the back and said.

"Eh, it's okay. After that mad dash out of the club, I thought you'd be a little on edge."

"Yea, I agree." Commented Ryan. "I had fun though. A lot of people watched me on the dance floor. They offered me drinks and other things. Although, it was crazy when you knocked that guy down in one punch. Did your fist hurt when you did that? Does your fist hurt now?"

"Easy man." I said. "I'm cool, and no, it didn't hurt."

"There's the wolf I know." Said Jake. "And don't worry, no one saw nothing. So we're good."

"Nice man." I said

We soon got on the bus and headed for school.

As usual, I saw Alice before I got to my locker. I quickly got a hold of her as she was writing that depressing poetry.

"Hey, Alice?" I said.

Her ears perked up as she turned around to look at me.

"Yea, what's up?" She said.

I swallowed some spit before I asked this question. I couldn't believe that I was asking this in the first place. Then I was starting to think that Alice wasn't the best person to ask this question. But still, I asked.

"Hey Alice," I began. "Have you ever met a human that was.....I guess....nice?"

She looked at me puzzled.

"What do you mean?" She said.

I tried rephrasing the question.

"I mean, like, do you think there is hope for humans? Are there some out there that....I guess understand us?"

Alice showed a little disgust and crossed her arms.

"Absolutely not." She said. "I mean, I thank the human who gave us a chance, gave us rights and all, but they all think the same. Nothing's changed...and I don't think anything will."

Well, not the happiest answer, but I think it got my mind straight.

"Why do you ask?" Asked Alice.

I froze; I had to think of something quick.

"Well, I guess it's good to have hope." I said.

What the hell? What a crappy and sappy answer. Alice will think I'm going crazy. But, she just put her hand on my shoulder and said.

"Don't follow false hopes, my friend."

She then walked away. I did the same and headed to my locker.

I started to feel calmer as I went through my locker. Victoria wasn't even on my mind now. The only thing I thought about was the day at hand. I managed to smile, now knowing that I don't have to worry. I soon heard Sam's laughter from behind me. I looked and saw her walking down the hall talking to this tiger girl. I then closed my locker and grabbed her arm. At first she was startled and dropped the books from her hands, but then I pulled her close and kissed her deeply. Hugging her tight. She finally gave in and started kissing me back as she put her arms around my neck.

"Um, I think I'll go to class now. See ya Sam." Said her tiger friend.

Me and Sam still kissed as she walked away. I felt her tail wagging fast as I held her. Finally, I stopped kissing her and she looked at me with a surprised and blushing face.

"Damn...." She said.

"I love you." I said softly.

She rubbed my chest and said.

"I love you too....you naughty wolf."

I smiled and she smiled back. I laughed a little bit and said.

"You should get to class."

"Huh?" She said. "Oh! Class!"

She kissed my cheek one last time, picked up her books, and left quickly through the hallway. I watched her sexy tail dash away. I'm a lucky wolf. I really am.

My tail was wagging the whole day. I was starting to feel better...until history class. I paused before I even entered the room. I took a deep breath and just tried to clear my head again. Finally I walked in. I saw my usual class and the teacher at his desk. I still don't like that man. Anyway, Victoria wasn't there. What a relief. I then went to sit down and unpacked my bag. I guess she was absent. As soon as I opened my book, I saw her walk in, hiding her face with her hair. I guessed wrong. I quickly looked down at my book and tried to not look at her. I know she glanced at me or looked in my direction. Like a laser beaming down on me, but not menacingly, more worried and I didn't want that awkward moment to happen if we lock eyes. I just kept looking at this book. Pretending to read it. Then the bell rang and the teacher began his lecture. I hate lectures, but I hated bad grades more. Don't like people calling me stupid. I took note after note of what he said. Then he just kept repeating himself. I got too bored. I started looking around the room daydreaming. Mostly about Sam. Then the daydreaming stopped. Sam went away....and Victoria came to mind. No matter how bad I wanted to forget, Victoria kept coming to mind.

"Was I too mean? Is she hurting right now? Is it my fault?" I thought.

The one thing I hated about myself, my biggest weakness, was my kindness. I hated hurting people. No matter who they are, no matter what I do, I always hate hurting people.

Then, the daydreams stopped and I caught myself staring right at Victoria's face. At the same moment, she stared back at me. We both had the same petrified face. I was afraid of what she was thinking and I know she was afraid of what I was thinking. Finally, the teacher clapped his hands loudly to get the class' attention. I was finally able to look away.

"Okay class!" He bellowed. "The bell is about to ring, so I just want to remind you that your history project is due on Friday and you will be presenting it to the entire class. I hope you all did your research."

The bell finally rang. Everyone packed up and stood from their chairs. I packed up slowly, paying no attention to Victoria. Closed my books, zipped my bag...then I waited.

"Try to not look at her" I thought.

I had to leave though. I had to look. Don't want to stare at her again. I stood up with my bag and looked to her direction. I was relieved to see that she was gone. I then began walking out of the classroom.

Finally, lunch came. Today was "make your own sandwich". I always have a pretty boring sandwich though: turkey, tomato, lettuce, and cheese on whole wheat bread. Plain but delicious. I then walked out into the bustling and loud cafeteria and looked for my friends. Obviously I went to the furry side of the cafeteria. Then suddenly, I had soft, furry arms wrap around me, then a kiss on my neck. I laughed a little and said.

"Hi Sam."

I felt her soft head against my back as she took a deep pleasurable breath.

"Heyyyy babyyyyyy." She said smoothly.

She stayed like this as we walked to our table. I saw the usually crew: Alice, Ryan, and Jack.

"Awwww." They all said.

We then sat down on the table next to each other. Everyone had already gotten there lunch. I was smiling when I saw that Sam had the same sandwich as me.

"Aren't you two just adorable." Said Alice.

Sam blushed a little and said.

"You should've saw us in the hall." Her tail flicked back and forth slowly as she looked at me. I couldn't help but smile.

"What did you do?" Asked Ryan.

I was a bit embarrassed, but I managed to say.

"I gave her a kiss"

"Ha!" Sam said. "Gave me a kiss? I thought you were gonna tear my clothes off."

Everyone's face lit up.

"Damn." Said Jack. "Nice man."

He pat me on the back and gave me a playful wink. I then tried to change the subject.

"So guys?" I said. "What's going on?"

"Well, same old thing with me. I think I finally found the right reaction for the talent show though. You see, I'm going to..."

"Nope!" Interrupted Jack as he waved his arms in the air. "I love you man, but I'm just too tired for any equations today."

"You realize you're in school, right Jack?" Said Sam.

Jack's ears then drooped down.

"Don't remind me." He said.

Ryan laughed a little then said.

"How was your weekend Alice?"

"Well, besides the club, I just slept."

"Getting your beauty rest?" Asked Sam.

"I don't rest to look this good. This is all natural." Answered Alice.

"I know that's right girl." Said Sam.

Then the two giggled and hi fived.

"My weekend was boring as hell after the club." Said Sam. "Wasn't doing anything besides chemistry homework."

She then hugged me tight and rubbed my chest smoothly.

"And I missed my baby." She continued. "What were you up to?"

I smiled and I was about to tell her, but Alice interrupted me and said.

"Yea, how was Victoria?"

I froze and stared right at Alice. I was at a lost of words.

"Who's Victoria?" Asked Sam.

I looked at Jack's face. He was deeply confused. I could tell.

"How do you know about Victoria?" I said.

Alice smiled then said.

"A friend of mine said that the teacher forced you two to work together on a project."

"Oh, that's not so bad." Said Jack drinking his apple juice.

"She's human." Said Alice

Jack immediately spit out his drink and stared at me. With his ears sticking up and his shocked expression, he could only mouth off one word.

"Dude..." He said.

Everyone then stared at me. I guess they were all looking for an answer. Alice and her nosey tail getting me in trouble. I froze. I felt like I was in an interrogation. One wrong word and I'm dead. I looked at Sam who had the same confused face as everyone else.

"It must've been awful." Sam said.

Then, I had it. I had my story, my answer to their confusion. I put the pieces together in my head and finally came up with something.

"Yea....it was so annoying." I began. "She treated me like an alien. Asking me strange questions and was like, afraid of what I might do."

Then, I felt it. I saw it in all my friends' faces. The look of relief. That "oh that makes more sense" feeling. Now, I was calm.

"If you ask me. She's a spoiled brat." I said.

Jack laughed a little bit and said.

"I know what you mean."

Sam hugged me some more and said.

"Aww, feels good to be back on the right side doesn't it."

I looked around and said.

"It sure does."

Then I kissed Sam and got another "awwww" from everyone at the table. Did I lie? Yes. I actually had a good time with Victoria...before that last moment, but I wasn't going to let anyone think that. Not even Victoria. Not even myself. Suddenly Sam's ears perked up and she stopped kissing.

"Oh, don't forget about after school." She said.

"What's after school?" I asked.

"Remember. We're helping with the set up of the talent show?"

Damn. I did agree to that. Damn it, why did I agree to that.

"Oh yea, that thing." I said.

Sam put on her fake pouty face and said.

"Remember? You promised."

"Yep, she's gotcha there." Said Jack.

"Thanks Jack." I said sarcastically. "I knew I could count on you. Sure baby, I'll be there."

Sam gave her tail a happy flick back and forth and went to eat her sandwich.

"Wow Sam, for a bad girl like you, you go all girly for this talent show." Said Alice.

"I can still knock you out." Said Sam.

Alice just smiled and said. "But you won't."

The two stared at each other for a few seconds, and then they both busted out laughing.

"Nah, you're my girl." Said Sam.

"That's right." Said Alice.

I just sat there confused.

"I just don't understand the friendship you guys have." I said.

"You'll never understand." Said Alice.

"And why is that?" I asked.

"Cause you're a guy." Said Sam.

Alice chuckled a little and ate a carrot stick.

Then Ryan began his statement. "Actually, aren't girls and boys very compatible? Each counterpart wants what the other wants and finding the right..."

Alice interrupted him.

"When you get a girlfriend, you'll understand everything." She said.

Ryan was silent and just stared at Alice. Then we all laughed, as usual. I honestly can't get enough of these guys.

School went by fast. My mind was conflicted. It's like having a song stuck in your head or something. Playing over and over and over. And you forget why you liked it in the first place. Victoria. First, I'm mad at her, then I feel sorry for her, and then I lie about her. I'm such a jerk. And I'm just hoping that I can just forget about the whole thing. But it won't go away. My good conscience won't let it.

Finally, it was after school. I had to go to the auditorium to meet Sam. I was honestly dreading this. Humans and furries were in the talent show. I guess the principal thought it would be good for us or something. All I know now is that I have to keep my temper down.

I then approached the auditorium. It was filled with a good number of people. All of them doing some kind of odd job. Painting, hanging decorations, setting up the stage, it almost looked like a construction site. Then, I heard a small, girly, shriek to my right.

"Ah! Damn it. Got it on my pants." It said.

Only Sam. It had to be Sam. I looked over to my right and there she was, trying to wipe paint off her black pants. She was painting a wallpaper with that tiger girl I saw earlier. I walked over to them and slowly started to hear their conversation.

"I told you black pants was a bad idea." Said the tiger

Sam just scolded at her.

"Can you get some paper towels or something?" She said.

"What do you think that's gonna do?" Said the tiger. "Paper towels will make it worst."

Finally I stepped in and said.

"Oh quit your whining, I'm sure it will wash off."

Sam then gave me a small, but friendly punch on the arm. It hurt a little. I keep forgetting how strong this girl is.

"Uh, should I leave you two alone again?" Said the tiger.

"Oh stop, we're done with that." Said Sam. She then winked at me and said. "For now anyways."

I just smiled.

"Oh, I almost forgot." Sam said. "Eddy, this is Rebecca, my friend from chemistry."

Rebecca waved at me and flicked her long, slender tail. She had long brown hair that nearly covered face and had these little earrings on her ears. She wore glasses and was wearing a blue tank top with jeans. She kind of reminded me of Alice.... Just, not so...dark looking. I held out my hand and said.

"Nice to meet you."

She gave me a quick handshake and said.

"Same."

"So what are you two doing here?" I asked.

"This is going to be the poster that we're going to hang in front of the stage." Said Rebecca.

"Yea, so it has to look great." Said Sam.

"I see." I said. "So what can I do to help?"

"You could grab a paintbrush." Said Rebecca.

"And end up like her?" I said as I pointed to Sam.

Sam looked at me with this "oh no you didn't" face. She then tried to throw a little paint at me, but I moved out of the way.

"Ha!" I said.

"Lucky." She said.

"Hey, careful now." Said Rebecca.

Me and Sam both smiled and said.

"Sorry."

"Good, now Eddy, you can get us more paint. This cheap school has us using small teacups of paint to cover a 10 foot poster."

"Ha, okay then." I said. Then I got up and left.

"Bye baby." Said Sam.

I just quickly smiled at her then kept walking. I looked around the auditorium for more paint. Our school had a pretty decent stage, but the lighting was terrible and most of the seats were broken. At least we had this smooth, wooden stage. I kept stepping over people painting posters and art on the floor. I tried asking nicely for some paint. The furries said no. The humans barely talked to me. They just grunted or looked away. So, trying to keep what little sanity I had left, I kept looking. Finally, I saw, far in the back of the stage, some bottles of paint.

"Perfect." I said to myself.

I quickly walked towards it. Seeing no one around them, I thought they were free, but as soon as I grabbed for the yellow paint bottle, a hand reached over mine. Not a fur covered hand. A fleshy, soft hand that delicately wrapped over my hand and quickly released. The nails had pink nail polish. I didn't even hesitate. I quickly looked towards the person and said.

"Excuse me, may I...."

I stopped when I looked at her face. I froze and stood there staring at her, and she did the same. It was Victoria. The only words she could muster out were.

"Oh....I..."

I then let go of the bottle. We continued to stand there. I wanted to say something, maybe say sorry, but I didn't know how to start. I just looked down. I was so embarrassed for some reason. Why couldn't I just talk to her?

"I'm sorry." She said suddenly. It surprised me. I looked up at her. Finally, I had the courage to talk.

"What?" I said.

Victoria took a deep breath and said. "I'm sorry....about last weekend."

"Oh," I said.

"It's just, I didn't know you had a girlfriend and I'm sorry if I went too far."

I just stood there. I don't know what I should do. Should I be mean and tell her off or should I be calm and accept her apology? Acceptance is good right? I don't know. We both just stood there while I was thinking. Then, I heard my name being called. My ears twitched at the sound. It was Sam.

"Eddy! Where are you?!" She said.

I just looked at Victoria and said.

"Look Victoria, I....forgive you but...."

Then Sam finally found me and cut me off.

"There you are? Did you get the paint yet?" She said. Then she looked at Victoria and said. "Oh, hey Victoria."

She scolded at Victoria and crossed her arms. Victoria panicked and quickly pointed towards the paint bottles and said.

"You can use my paint."

I was going to grab a bottle, but Sam quickly grabbed my hand and said.

"Oh no, I see what your game is girl." She then walked towards Victoria with her finger pointed at her face. "You're trying to get in our heads. So we can give you our trust. And then, when you got what you want, you play us right under our muzzles."

Victoria seemed scared and slowly backed away.

"Listen, stay away from my man, and we won't have trouble. Do I make my self clear?" Sam continued.

Victoria nodded her head yes.

"Good." Sam said.

She then grabbed my arm and pulled me as we walked away. I felt guilty. Deep in my stomach. I looked back at Victoria. She was still standing there, just staring at the floor. I felt her sadness. Her loneliness. It all felt so......familiar.
