And Even Saints Sin

by Axell

Prologue

There had been nothing more familiar to Natalya than the sound of the turbines in the dam. It was a mess, which they had stopped before things got uglier. Terrorist overran the dam and set up explosive charges all over the infrastructure, threatening that if their demands were not met, they would destroy the dam and flood the city. First to respond was the police, arriving in the scene as fast as they could and started negotiating with the Terrorists. It was unsuccessful as the militant group demanded ten million dollars. Negotiations broke off and soon there was an exchange of gun fire. It turned out that the militants were well-armed. Just as they were about to overpower the police. The SWAT arrived and provided cover fire for all the injured to escape, however they were still overpowered. The terrorists was about to blow up the dam, they came. Storming in to the scene, Natalya and her partner Des clashed with the rouge militant group, for the control of the dam, backed up by more SWAT teams that had recently arrived in the scene. The fight raged for three hours until all the militant group save the leader was dead.

She smiled and looked a her partner, a Cheetah who leaned on a police cruiser beside her. "So what are you planning tonight, huh, Des?"

The Cheetah turned and replied: "I was thinking of finishing paperwork. I've got loads of 'em; it's gonna be an all-nighter." Natalya raised an eyebrow. "Working? After all the crap you just went through?" The husky didn't believe him, while he was persevering into finishing his work, he was not that persistent.

The two of them were in the Police Department of Lancaster City. They held positions in the department and were distinguished as the city's best. Natalya Summers and Denzel Richards, were partners in upholding the law. Both of them knew had worked with each other for half a decade.

She still remembered their first years. They would race each other to get the better case, which the chief offered. They would also blame each other for the blunders committed in missions. She remembered the Chief getting so mad at both of them that he would hurl his coffee out of the window and end the shouting match. "Cut it out the both of you. YOU'RE ACTING LIKE KIDS!" those words echoed in the back of her head as smile formed on her lips. And as the years pass they had grown more closer to each other and soon enough... fell in love.

"I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask the chief for a break," the Cheetah replied, exhaustion evident in his voice. Des pulled out a small box from the confines of his weathered brown overcoat.

"Des, can I have some of those breath mints." The husky pointed to the small box he held, no smaller than her clenched fist. Des ruptured in laughter as he heard this. Natalya felt stupid and asked: "That's not mint?"

The cheetah was almost breathless, as he wheezed and slapped his hand on hood of the dilapidated Corona Cruiser. Natalya's ears perked up and she strode towards Des and punched him in the gut. She saw the cheetah crumple to the ground and say "Enough...(snicker)...enough."

Des rose to a half kneel, extended his arms, opened the small box, and said: "Ms. Natalya Summers will you marry me?"

The husky was taken back by what he had said. She was about to slap herself, thinking that all of it was nothing more than a dream. "I...I..." she looked into the dark of his azure blue eyes full of hope. She would accept it. "Yes."

Then she heard applauses coming from around them. Everyone had saw it, even the chief chuckled and drew out his hankee, about to cry. Des stood up, and drew Natalya closer to him, he could see tears of happiness in her brown eyes.

"Kiss her! Kiss her! Kiss her!" the shouted in unison.

Des and Natalya, had only millimeters of space in between them. The husky closed her eyes... That kiss never came. Bullets whistled in the air, the cheetah's eyes shot open. Des fell on to the ground with Natalya.

"Des, answer me! Shit! You're hit." she shouted, noting a red spot suddenly spread out in his overcoat.

"Natalya, hide." Des said weakly.

"My brothers are dead, and soon so shall I and all of you," said the bulldog as he inched to the edge of the dam, with a remote detonator in his left hand and brandished a Dessert Eagle in his right.

Somehow the Terrorist leader had managed to sneak up behind them. Angry due to the loss of his brothers he was hellbent on exacting his revenge.

"Calm down, give us the remote, and surrender peacefully." the chief's voice boomed, magnified by the megaphone. All firearms were aimed at the leader. Everyone was behind the squad cars. Natalya had managed to half drag Des to the barricade of police and SWAT vehicles.

"Ms. Summers, I don't think he'll make it. The bullet has penetrated his spine, shattering it and the bone shards have pierced his heart and lungs," The paramedic, a squirrel, said, examining the Cheetah's wounds.

The husky wanted to scream out loud. She was angry at the militant leader. Just as she reached for her pistol, Dens grabbed for her hand.

"I'm having difficulty breathing, love...(wheeze)...Please unbind me." She quickly undid the velcro straps.

Des knocked the husky and the squirrel of their feet and jumped off the stretcher. By instinct something told him that this was his final minute. He bolted to the terrorist. The bulldog saw this and shot him until his bullets ran out. One of the shots entered the cheetah's right leg, the other embedded itself in his ribcage, the last round exited his right arm, despite the pain he tackled the dog, causing him to release his grip on the detonator, which tumbled harmlessly of the concrete floor. Due to the force generated by the cheetah's run and impact each one went over the edge, the militant leader and the detective plummeted down, falling in to the wild and endlessly shifting waters beneath them.

"DENZEL!"
