Now Serving:

Webshow, Interrupted

Venti's cellphone started vibrating, and a quick glance at the caller ID showed his adoptive father was trying to reach him.

Hey, I have an important phone call. His fingers flew across the keyboard, praying silently his voicemail didn't take the call. Can we put this on pause for a few minutes? I'll make it up to you, I promise.

Sure thing!

Venti turned off the webcam and answered his cell. "Hi there, Dad. What's up?"

The reception on the other line was full of static, as if his father was in a place dangerously close to a dead zone, or he was in a car. "I'm on my way to Reno, son."

"As much as I'd love to see you, I'm curious as to why you're on the way. Are you pulling a Mom and flying?"

"No, I'm driving."

"Please tell me you have one of those bluetooth devices."

"I do, and don't change the subject."

"Yes sir, so why are you driving to Reno?"

"Your mother told me about your birth father showing his ass up. Probably wanting to steal money from you or some stupid scam like that. I'm going to give him a piece of my mind."

Venti's adoptive father was a hyena who was on a good day only five foot six and maybe one hundred eighty pounds. Venti's birth father, whom he had recently met a few days ago, was over nine feet tall and well over a half ton of muscle.

"Dad, please turn around and drive back home." Venti felt a cold chill rampage down his spine and wrap its tendrils around his heart. "Everything's going to be all right. I'm not going to give him any money." Especially since I'm suspecting that was exactly_the reason why he found me after all these years of no contact whatsoever._

"Sorry, son, I'm pulling into your apartment complex right now."

Venti rubbed the side of his face. "Now? You mean you waited until the last minute to tell me you were outside my apartment complex?" Why do my parents do this to me?

"I love you too much to let that bastard mess with my son's head."

"Dad, if I thought for a second I could intimidate you into driving back, I would. This is a serious breach of my adulthood. I'm not a kid anymore."

"You never could intimidate me, son. Even during that time you beat me at arm wrestling when you were fourteen."

"You tried to ground me for that, you know."

"I was joking. It's my prerogative as your father to make jokes like that. I'm getting out of the car now. Let me in and then we're going to deal with your deadbeat birth father." Then he hung up, leaving Venti standing there with the phone in his ear.

When he snapped out of his fugue state, his fingers flew across the keyboard once again. Something came up, Wolfie. I'll have to give you a freebie when things calm down.

What's wrong?

My Dad decided to pay me an unexpected visit. Pray for my immortal soul. I'm going to need it.
