#1 of Commission Works

Cover image is over a ClearSphere laboratory which was found at http://www.clearsphere.com/containment-products.htm

This is a commission I did a long time ago for someone who is no longer my friend. However, I figured I could upload this to show what I can do. Keep in mind that this is back from when I didn't edit very well, so a few awkward phrases may be present. Enjoy! :)

Plink! ...Plink! Reios slowly opened his eyes. His vision was blurry at first, but after blinking a few times, his sight slowly came back to him. He looked around quickly at first, but his vision started blurring again upon doing so, so he slowed down and waited for his head to clear a bit.

Upon regaining conscious thought, he discovered that he was inside a cylindrical glass tube, with multiple tubes and wires coming into it, which also explained the "plinking". On second thought, maybe they were going out. Whatever the case, his headache was tremendous, and he slumped to the floor of his tiny area, trying not to cry out in pain.

About half an hour later, the pain had numbed much, and he was able to stand up without half as much difficulty as he'd had before. He examined his surroundings again, and saw that he was in a room filled with high tech computer monitors, processors, and panels with flashing lights all over them. A large keyboard underneath a huge monitor held multiple office supplies and a small microphone on a stand.

Where the hell am I? He thought to himself. He definitely didn't remember coming to this place on his own, so he figured someone must've brought him here. But who? And why?

A man dressed in a white lab coat interrupted his thoughts. He entered the room through an automatic door off to Reios's right, and was holding a clipboard with note pages scattered all over it. As he walked by, Reios craned his white, furry neck to see what was written on it. He wasn't able to see much, because the writing was so small and scratchy. There wasn't much writing on the pages anyways, though. It was mostly bar and line graphs displaying numbers and captions too small to be read. The only thing he could make out was the heading on the page. In big, bold letters, it said "Furry Experimentation Notes."

Reios wasn't sure what it meant, or even if it related to him, but he knew that this mysterious man was, at the moment, his only hope for getting out. Using all of his current strength, which had been steadily increasing along with his vision and mind, he pounded on the glass wall of his cage with a paw closed in a fist.

"Hey!" He shouted. "Get me out of here! I don't want to stay in here!"

The human didn't even seem to notice. He simply walked over to a rather large keyboard in front of the monitor and started typing in what was probably on the notepad. Frustrated, Reios sat down again and watched the screen. He watched the colorful greens and blues of the bar graph slowly grow on the screen. Even though the colors were a nice relief from the gray, metallic room they were in, it didn't help his mood much.

After reviewing his little bout with the man further, Reios deduced that he was being held here against his will. He took a better look around his glass prison and saw that there were no doors, panels or anything else that would suggest an exit.

As he continued his inspection, the absence of an opening produced two rather haunting questions. The first was how he ended up in this tiny space, and the second concerned the issue of breathing. How was he doing it? If this tube was as confining as it seemed, there shouldn't be any air getting in to him. He swished his tail angrily. Nothing in this place seemed to make sense.

Angry and a little scared, Reios curled up on the floor of the tube, trying not to panic. If I stay calm, things will work out... Just give them time. He told himself this phrase maybe three or four times before he finally realized where his air was coming from. Below him, the flashing tubes making "plink" noises hooked up to the base of his containment unit and the air was wafting up through the floor. Something was strange about it, though... instead of smelling fresh, or even old and stale, like the lab around him surely smelled, he smelled something... digital. He wanted a better word than that to describe the odor surrounding him, but at the moment, it was all that his mind could come up with.

Putting his moist, black nose to the ground, he sniffed a couple of times. What he smelled was some kind of terrible mix between metal and plastic. It was as if someone had taken the two and melted them together into some type of repugnant solid. He inhaled deeply, and after feeling a bit woozy from the smell, he sneezed.

He raised his head and perked his ears as another man walked in the room. He was dressed the same as the other, with the exception that this one was wearing blue medical gloves, and the two men greeted each other warmly. Reios watched with interest as the two conversed. Not much sound reached him through the barriers around him, but he picked up words such as "mind", "furry", "weird", and "fight". Reios wasn't sure what it all meant, but he knew he didn't want to hang around and find out.

Before he could react, however, a loud ding noise came from an above speaker, and he distinctly heard someone say: "All available security personnel, please report to lab C-32 within the next five minutes. Our experiment with the creature will begin momentarily."

Reios looked back to the man with gloves in horror as he set down a small microphone that had been sitting by the keyboard. It had been his voice over the speakers! Reios started panicking. The creature they were mentioning had to be him. His mind started racing as he thought of all the horrible things that might be involved in this "experiment". That settled it. As soon as they opened his tube, he was running.

His mind then took a turn for the worse. What if they don't open my case? What if that smell is part of the experiment, and I don't even have to leave the tube! He started clawing at the walls of his cage, but they wouldn't even make a scratch. Frantic, he started making barking noises to get the attention of the scientists. They glanced over at him, but simply shrugged and went back to work.

Furious now, Reios started throwing himself against the side of the cage. The scientist with the clipboard yelled and threw a stapler at him. The stapler hit the side of the tube with a bang, but it only succeeded in making Reios louder. With an annoyed gesture, the scientist threw up his hands, grabbed a long metal pole, and pressed a button on the keyboard. Reios looked around with amazement as the circular barrier trapping him slowly raised up from the floor. Reios crouched down and got his nose through, but the scientist poked it with the stick. Reios yelped and jumped back as he felt a jolt of electricity course through his body. He laid on the floor of the container, pretending to be stunned or knocked out, as the walls were still rising. He figured if they didn't think he was able to move, he might have a chance at escape.

The scientist smirked and walked back to the keyboard, about to start closing the container again, but it was too late. Reios had seen his opportunity and bolted out. Luckily, his slim build gave him the speed he needed to accomplish his escape. His body still weak from the shock the cattle prod had given him, he stumbled about for a second while trying to regain complete control of his anthropomorphic jackal body. The scientists were stunned when they saw that he was free, and their split second distraction was enough to let Reios get his bearings and dash out of the room.

The scientists cursed and hit a button that set off an alarm. The one in gloves punched his partner in the arm and screamed into the microphone: "All available staff! We are on lock-down! Repeat, we are on lock-down! This is not a drill! The furry has escaped! If you see him, contain him! No questions!" They both groaned and ran out of the room after Reios.

Reios's feet padded against the cold, metal floor of the... wherever he was. He didn't stop for anything, and never looked back. As he ran, his head continued to process the information given him. Well, it's now obvious that I'm the furry they've been talking about. But I still don't know what kind of experiment they're planning. He shook his head as he rounded a corner. If I can escape, I'll never have to find out!

To his surprise, no guards were in the halls to stop him. As he rounded corner after corner, he realized that he must be really deep inside the facility, and it must've just been taking security a long time to get to him. He started panicking again. If it was taking them that long just to get to him even when they knew where they were going, he'd never be able to find his way out!

But after the next corner, he started hearing voices and the sound of feet pounding on the floor. Reios hurriedly scanned the area, but there was nowhere to hide. He was going to have to fight his way out, or get past the guards somehow. He looked down, and noticed for the first time that he was naked. His mind had been so preoccupied with escaping and his reason for being there, he completely glazed over the fact that they had taken his clothes! As the footsteps grew closer, his mind started racing faster until he suddenly realized that his nudity worked for him as opposed to against him.

Quietly, he snuck over to the very edge of the corner that the guards were about to round, and waited, tail stuck straight out in suspense. As soon as the first guard came into view, Reios yowled and slid between his legs, tripping him up. He smiled with satisfaction as the guards behind the first started falling on top of their downed buddy. However, there were around thirty guards, and only about the first seven were affected by his clever plan. Reios stood to his full height and glared at the guards, snarling with sharp, white teeth.

A guard was the first to move. He charged Reios, but because of his build, Reios easily sidestepped him and sent him flying with a shove to his back. The other guards charged, and some of Reios's panic returned. He got on all fours and dashed under them, hoping to create a scenario like the first. However, none of the guards fell, but they were unable to get a good grip on Reios as he slithered past.

Reios dodged under legs, pants, feet, and various weapons strapped to belts, such as guns and heavy flashlights made for beating as well as illuminating. He saw open tunnel through a flurry of legs and people. Making a mad dash towards freedom, he leaped between two guards... and fell into the arms of another.

The guard looked about as surprised as Reios, but Reios, quite used to shock by this point, recovered first and bit the guard's nose. He jumped away, and would've escaped, except one of the guards took a shot at him. The bullet whizzed towards Reios, and grazed the fur on his left leg. He winced and kept running, but the next bullet found its mark, and struck him in his right arm. It wasn't enough to bring him down, but he stumbled, which was enough of a break for the guards to surround him, grab whatever they could, and throw him into a corner, trapping him. Reios cowered as they started kicking him, but they only managed to get a few good blows in before the scientists that were experimenting with him ran up and called off the guards.

"Get off of him!" The scientist with the gloves shouted.

"Yeah! If you keep beating him like that, there's going to be no mind left to meld with the supercomputer."

Through his pain, Reios's mind started working overtime. Supercomputer? Meld? What on Earth are they talking about?

Reios wasn't sure, but as the guards parted to let the two men drag him back to his chamber, he knew it wouldn't be long before he found out.
