#5 of The Endless Void; Book One: A Multitude of Stars...

My mind reels through the inky blackness. Pinpoints of light surround me, but all are too far away to provide any warmth. I have to keep searching, throwing my being through the stars. My plans require a particular life form and I can not end my search until I find them. I pass by a tiny frozen stone, orbiting a star almost at the limit of the gravitational pull. My database says the little thing was called Pluto, once. The star is named Sol apparently. That is awfully self-centered. I nearly collide with a planet as it crosses my path. I really should stay more focused. My database calls that one Neptune. Looking further ahead, I see three other bodies, which my database designates Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter in turn. I slow my speed to scan each of their moons. Are none of the bodies in this solar system capable of supporting advanced life? Nothing but microbes on the lot of them. I need a being that can take action. I need a being that has free will that I can bend to my own. A small red planet catches my scanning eye. Mars, my database calls it. There was once life there, judging from the body's surface. But still none that I can use right now.

Earth arrives on my scanner and I all but stop dead next to Mars. The red planet's sister is pristine blue with an atmosphere capable of life. Perfect. I eagerly begin a more intensive scan of the surface. At last. Earth; population: over twenty billion sentient life forms; stage of development: the start of the advanced stage. My scans become more meticulous, I must find my life form. After searching three billion planets, I can not afford to get sloppy now. I narrow my search easily, choosing a being at the end or very beginning of life would be pointless. I need a youth. But which one? My database tells me there are at least eight billion beings on the planet of the correct age. I narrow further by selecting beings that possess intense curiosity. A phrase lights up in my database: The Aerospace Exploration Academy. Students in attendance: three hundred and fifty thousand, seven hundred and sixty-three. Most interesting. An alarm goes off in the back of my mind. I must return quickly before any of the others notice my absence. I take off once more, skirting Sol's event horizon as I pick up speed around the star. Two other planets are hiding on the other side of Sol. Mercury and Venus, my database says. I scan them quickly and, finding nothing, continue my arc around Sol. A solar flare kicks up in front of me and I sail through it. It is pleasantly warm; a refreshing change from the bitter cold of the empty space between stars. Sol releases me just as I reach the star's opposite side, breaking the light speed barrier easily.

I am awakened by one of my sisters. She brightly invades my peaceful slumber without consideration for my feelings or temperament. My home is dark save for her glowing radiance. She smiles cutely, that is she would if shooting stars could smile. I know her. She is playing a game with me. I am expected to guess why she is here, but I don't need to. I am fully aware that Dreaming is taboo in our society. Dreaming can create worlds. It can also destroy them if uncontrolled. I used Dreaming to cross great distances with minimal energy and effort. This sister of mine is much younger than I, hardly beyond comet stage and they expect her to berate me.

"Can I help you, Eurydice?" I ask, sitting up bleary-eyed.

She does not answer, expecting me to play along. Her pulsing light betrays her mood. She would be grinning if she had the ability.

"Was I Dreaming again?" I say, mocking confusion.

"You were, brother!" She says excitedly. "They sent me to remind you to turn on your Dreamguard. You know how dangerous Dreaming is!"

If I had a forehead I would have placed my palm against it to pretend to be dismayed.

"I can't believe I forgot again!"

"The elders will be really upset if you do it any more." Eurydice has become dour.

I reassure her by sparkling pleasantly.

"Don't worry. I go to the council today to give my latest proposal. They have to accept it. Then I will have permission to Dream freely."

Eurydice glows happily. She doesn't have any idea what my proposal is. I don't think she cares either.

"Will you be going away to do your Dreaming?" She asks.

It is a bizarre question. The young do not usually care where the old go as long as the old return to nourish and teach them. Eurydice is only a few millennia old and forced to stay inside the commune. She does not know the loneliness of space that age and freedom will teach her.

"Most likely," I reply. "I need to find solace where inspiration is easy to come by."

She flits about dismissively.

"Whatever you say, big brother." She knows me too well it seems. "I will be in the congress if you want to find me, though I know you probably will not."

She seems almost hurt when she says the last phrase, but I know it is another one of her games. She flits off once again and I begin to prepare for my proposal. Creating a web like mine required much time and explaining that web to the council of elders would be no easy task.

***

I rubbed my eyes as the alarm next to my bed brought me abruptly out of a very nice dream. The white plaster ceiling of my new dorm room stared back at me from above. It was seven o'clock on the first day of classes at The Academy and I really didn't want to get up. I hated new schools. I sighed and rolled over into something wet on the sheets.

"Mother fucker..." I whispered.

Apparently the dream had been too nice. I slapped the alarm clock to shut it up before my roommate woke up. The cheetah in the bed across the room seemed to be sleeping soundly. I slid out from beneath my sheets and stared accusingly down at the sizeable tent in my white briefs.

"I don't believe this shit," I said under my breath as I began tearing the sheets off of the small twin sized bed.

The cheetah in the other bed stirred and rolled onto his back, a limp arm dangling over the side of the mattress. As I gathered up my soiled sheets, I took the opportunity to examine my roommate's bare torso. His name was Joel. Each student had been issued sleep wear and several uniforms, but neither I nor my roommate wore them. I wondered if he had been bold enough to sleep entirely in the buff. Joel's chest and stomach were nicely defined, no doubt from years of physical activities, and covered in white fur. The rest of him was orangey yellow and dotted in the typical black cheetah spots. His arms were similarly built as his torso and I felt the tent in my briefs returning. Blushing slightly, I turned and threw my sheets onto my metal desk chair as I took a pair of uniform pants from the closet near the door, tugging them up my legs. The chair was a match to the desk it was sitting in front of. The room barely had anything else in it. Computer terminals were embedded into the tops of each desk and my roommate's old fashioned television was sitting on the top of his dresser. I didn't bother putting on a shirt. Grabbing the pile of sheets from the chair as well as my room key, I made my way to the laundry room.

The hallways were thankfully barren this early in the morning. I pushed the door of the laundry room open and dumped the load of sheets into the nearest machine. The sizeable room was warm and smelled of detergent and clean fabric. That was better than it smelling like dirty fabric at least.

"This is such bullshit," a voice said behind me, making me jump a bit.

I hadn't even seen the other student in the room. I turned around to face the female rat sitting on one of the washers and staring at one of the soap dispensers that was fastened to the wall.

"Pardon?" I asked.

"Oh I'm sorry, I was just mumbling to myself..." She blushed as she noticed my lack of a shirt, eyeing my torso. I folded my arms over it to block her analyzing gaze. "I was just saying that the prices are ridiculous here. They make us pay one hundred thousand credits per semester and they can't cut us some slack on detergent?"

"Well you could just bring your own," I offered. "It's pretty cheap off campus."

"That's actually a really good idea! I'll do that in the future. Right now I'd better suck it up and pay for this load, though."

"You could use some of mine." I had spare cubes anyway. I dug in my uniform pocket and produced three detergent cubes. "How many do you need?"

"You would give me some, really?"

"Sure, like I said, it's cheap off campus."

The rat took two of the small cubes from my hand and tossed them into the washer she had been sitting on.

"Thanks a lot," she said. "You're a life saver."

I laughed.

"Whatever you say." I tossed the last cube into my own washer and turned it on.

"I'm Natalie, by the way," the rat said nervously.

"Nice to meet you. I'm Marcus."

"Is this your first semester?" She asked.

I just nodded. It was too early in the morning to have a cheery conversation, but it seemed that Natalie was going to try anyway.

"Mine too. I'm looking to go into the Universal Expansion program, what about you?"

"Isn't everyone and their mother trying to get into that program?" I asked. I hadn't given that program much thought.

"Well yeah, but don't you think it would be cool to look at stars and planets up close?"

"Sure, but I'm not a very competitive person."

"What program are you looking to get into after the intro course, then?"

"I was thinking about piloting. Maybe I could also take a few science courses to round out the degree."

The rat gave me another appraising look as the machine next to me buzzed and I pressed the drying button.

"You might change your mind after the intro course talks about the Universal Expansion program." She smiled.

She sounded like the academy's course brochure. Of course I wanted to have a shot at looking at stars up close and maybe even land on a few distant worlds, but there were only ten students from each freshman intro course selected to take part in the Expansion Program; ten out of nearly three thousand.

"Maybe." I looked at my watch. "Oh fuck, I'm going to be late if I don't go take a shower. It was nice meeting you. I'll see you around!"

I was grateful for an excuse to leave that discussion. I pulled my cleaned sheets from the machine and dashed from the room as Natalie waved goodbye. Joel was sitting up in his bed when I came back into our room looking bleary eyed and confused. He seemed to relax a bit as I entered the room.

"Oh hey Mark, I thought you had moved out or something." Joel said, yawning.

"Nope, just had to... uh..."

I didn't want to tell him the truth at first. He might've thought I wet the bed or something. Then again, we were both guys. He probably knew all about wet dreams. I decided to just come out with it.

"I just had to throw my sheets in the wash." I said it as nonchalantly as I could, tossing the pile of them onto my barren bed.

He grinned.

"You too, huh? I'm glad I'm not the only one that has those kinds of dreams."

My heart skipped a beat mostly from surprise, but also because Joel had revealed a rather personal similarity we had. It made me wonder if he could desire me in the same way that I was beginning to desire him. He stretched, showing off his impeccably built chest, six-pack abs, and arms. I looked away from him to grab my towel for fear that the tent in my pants would return with a vengeance and betray me.

"What was your dream about?" Joel suddenly asked.

I froze on my way to the bathroom.

"I... uh... I don't remember," I lied.

"Ah I hate it when that happens," Joel said. "Mine was about a tribe of lonely cheetah amazons who all wanted a piece of yours truly!"

And suddenly all of my fantasies were shattered. He said it with pride, as if he hoped I would congratulate him or something. I just forced myself to smirk and remain neutral. I continued on my way to the bathroom door.

"Whatever," I managed to say without sounding too disappointed.

"What time is it, dude?" Joel asked behind me.

"Seven thirty. The intro course starts in forty-five minutes." I replied as I closed the bathroom door behind me and hung up my towel, practically ripping off the uniform pants around my waist.

I looked at myself in the bathroom mirror. I had a white patch of fur on my chest at the base of my pecs. I didn't like the way it looked. I thought it made me look older. My brown eyes gazed over the rest of the bear in the mirror. My round ears stood up on my head and I rubbed the left one idly. The white fur on my chest ran down my belly in a thin line, pooling just above my sheath and wreathing my brown colored package in white. I stepped into the shower. The hot stream of water felt good as it ran over my body. I soaped myself and found my mind drifting back to the image of Joel stretching in his bed. I pictured what he would look like naked, closing my eyes as my hand drifted between my pecs and slid down my stomach made slick by the suds. My stiffening erection slid from my sheath on cue and I gripped it eagerly. Joel's image in my mind shifted and I imagined myself behind him, holding him against the shower wall and forcing my meat deep into his quivering and protesting body. He whined and begged me to stop, but it only fueled my desire for him. Eventually Joel stopped his protests and began to moan in intense pleasure from my powerful thrusts as his tailhole became used to my girth. I grunted and bit his shoulder to solidify my dominant position, my hand grabbing his throbbing cheetah-hood and stroking him slowly in time with my passionate thrusts. My other hand held his wrists together behind him and I pretended to be surprised when he began pushing back against me, urging me to force as much of me inside of him as I could. I obliged by speeding up my thrusts and increasing my forcefulness as well. I released his shoulder from my mouth and panted in his ear, the taught muscles on my chest pressed tightly to his back as I fucked him.

"You love my cock in you, don't you, kitty?" I whispered, each thrust bringing emphasis to my words.

I felt his pre leaking down my hand from the head of his pulsing dick and I brought my hand to my mouth, licking one of the fingers clean. He gasped and shuddered, nodding in answer to my question.

"I thought so," I said, shoving my other fingers into his short muzzle.

He moaned in response and I stopped my thrusting, letting him fuck himself on my thick rod. Ripping my hand from his mouth and releasing his wrists, I placed both of my hands on his round ass, gripping it tightly as I guided his hole over my throbbing bear-hood.

"Oh yes!" He suddenly cried out. "Oh Mark, please fuck me! Fill me! Oh god I'm gonna' shoot!"

I clenched my teeth and pounded his ass with reckless abandon as I felt Joel's tailhole spasm around my girth. His thick cum splattered the shower wall in long, white ropes from my fevered and rough thrusting as he whimpered and whined like an eager bitch, my nuts pulling up tight to my crotch from my immanent orgasm. The little bastard's tight, clenching passage was going to make me shoot any minute. I felt my whole body tense as my rigid prick throbbed eagerly at the brink of climax. I gasped at the threshold of release...

A loud knock pounded on the bathroom door and my eyes snapped open, my concentration completely broken. Joel's voice drifted in from the room outside.

"Mark! Come on, we're gonna' be late, bro!"

Another fantasy shattered by Joel's lack of tact. I shouldn't blame him though; there was no way for him to know I was making love to him a few seconds earlier.

"I'll be out in a second!" I called back, finishing the rinse. My cock was angrily stiff as I turned off the water and stepped out of the shower. My brown furred orbs still pressed up tight against the base of my shaft. I probably could have shot a huge load if I had the time, but I didn't want to be late on day one. I could find another time to jerk off. I grabbed the towel from the rack on the wall and started toweling myself off. I looked at the bear's cock, my cock, in the reflection of the mirror and scowled at it.

"Deal with it," I said. "You'll get to have fun later."

I slipped my briefs up my legs and stuffed my still throbbing dick inside sideways. The uniform pants followed soon after. I took my towel with me as I left the bathroom. Joel was waiting outside impatiently. He was already dressed in the blue uniform pants and lighter blue shirt. His academy cap was resting barely on his head and his blue tie was loose around his neck. A tuft of his white chest fur fell over the unbuttoned collar of his shirt. He looked even more roguishly handsome in the uniform and I had to tear my eyes away from him to put my own on.

"What took you so long in there, man?" Joel asked.

I shrugged.

"I take long showers, so what?"

"Well I guess I'll have to go without today." The cheetah snorted as he grabbed a bottle from his desk and squirted a few drops onto his neck. "This stuff masks everything." He said, grinning.

I took the opportunity and leaned in close to him, inhaling deeply, near his neck. His scent was heaven to me. He had an exotic scent, one that brought images of the savannah during the dry season, one that evoked tribal rituals and endless orgies around a large bonfire on the vast plains. It wasn't obvious, but I saw him blush slightly as I pulled away to throw my uniform shirt over my shoulders and rub a deodorant stick under my own arms.

"I bet it does," I said, trying to mask my attraction for him as I tied my tie in the bathroom mirror and slapped my hat on my head.

I didn't look too bad in the uniform either, but I was too annoyed to observe myself thoroughly. I picked up a notebook from my desk drawer and a pen as we headed out of the room. Joel was silent as we walked out of the dorm building and joined the river of students on their way to Enterprise Hall for the Intro Course. The august morning was cool, a refreshing change from yesterday's crushing heat. The trees on the campus were still green and vibrant flowerbeds dotted the quad we were crossing. They smelled like flowers should I supposed. I had never taken the time to stop for them. The campus was a national arboretum, or so the academy brochure said. I remembered the tour guide telling us that one of the trees had cost the school one million credits to buy it and ship it there. The only other time the cheetah hadn't been talking my ear off since I met him was when he was asleep.

"Are you ok?" I asked.

He smiled slightly at me.

"Yeah, man, just nervous. I really want to get into the Expansion Program. I don't even know what the exam is going to be like."

"I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure today's class will be full of information."

"Aren't you nervous, Mark?"

"I try to not let it get to me. But you know what? Probably every kid in this crowd is just as nervous as you."

Joel grinned.

"Yeah you're probably right."

"I doubt this class will be a big deal, man. Just chill."

Joel nodded, still grinning as we continued walking towards Enterprise Hall in the midst of the intro course students. New students only saw this half of the campus while they were in their intro course. The other half was reserved for students that had been placed into their specific programs. The exam was a ruthless test, by reputation, that designated which program you were enrolled in at the end of the Intro Course.

Enterprise Hall looked more like a stadium than a classroom building. The outside was circular and a large glass dome arced upwards away from the metal walls, forming a see-through roof. Students filed into the four large entrances of the hall, pushing at each other to make it in on time. I doubted the professors would hold it against us if we were a little late on the first day. Joel and I managed to stick together through the crowd, staring up in wonder when we reached the interior lecture hall. The building was the classroom. Upholstered stadium seats for at least three thousand students surrounded a central platform on all sides. The platform was sunken into the floor and a small, strange metal pillar jutted up from the center of it. Sunlight filtered through the glass roof and was made softer by the clear material. It felt and looked more like artificial light than the harsh glare of natural sunlight. Wispy clouds could be seen moving slowly by above us. The room smelled like a movie theater.

"This place is fucking awesome," Joel breathed.

I just nodded in agreement.

"Where should we sit?" he asked.

"Uh... how about in the tenth row back. Not too close, but not too far," I said.

"Where's your sense of adventure? Come on, we're sitting in the front!"

He grabbed my hand, making my heart thud in my chest unexpectedly. I was too surprised to protest and I liked too much the feel of his soft palm against mine. He pulled me down to the sparsely filled first row of chairs and then let go of me. I wanted to grab his hand again, but restrained myself. It was easy to find two seats next to each other and we had just settled in, pens at the ready when a familiar voice called out from the aisle.

"Marcus!" Natalie was waving at me.

I waved back halfheartedly. I really didn't want her to sit next to me, but I doubted Joel would go along with it if I lied about the seat being taken. The rat stepped over a few other students to get to us and sat down heavily in the empty chair to my right.

"I'm glad I made it in time! The line to get in here was ridiculous!" She said, breathless.

"Who's your cute friend?" Joel asked me, looking at Natalie.

She blushed slightly.

"Natalie, meet my roommate Joel," I said.

"Charmed." He told her, smiling an extremely handsome smile.

Discomfort assailed my stomach. I was jealous. I wanted Joel, damn it. He shouldn't be wasting his charms on a scrawny female rat! He should have been mine to seduce, mine to break, and mine to love. I shook myself and calmed down. There would be others most likely. Joel was clearly only interested in females anyway. The rumbling chatter of the student body around us quieted down as the light of the day dimmed. We all looked up on cue to see the glass triangles of the dome shifting opacity. It was transformer glass. Surprised and awed gasps came drifting up from the students in the chairs as the first intro class began.

"The council rejects your proposal, Centurion. You do not have the Dreaming experience to permit experimentation on a sentient species."

Zethias, an old red dwarf, was speaking, but I had already come up with a rebuttal before he had finished.

"The council permitted my father to experiment on sentients when he was much younger than I and I have twice his Dreaming experience!"

"The council has changed since then and so have our methods of dealing with sentient races. Your proposal does not specify which race you are to be experimenting on or where."

"So it's a matter of logistics then?"

"It is a matter of principle." Ganymede speaks. She is a blue giant and a newly appointed council member. "The council will not allow Dream experimentation on advanced sentient races after the Kelidon IV incident."

I hate her.

"The council is being unreasonable! My expertise in all of the Dreaming simulations shows that another incident such as the one on Kelidon IV only has an eight point seven five chance in one thousand of happening!"

It takes all of my restraint to not show my anger by altering my pigment to a shade of dark red. I remain my usual pristine silver.

"Unreasonable, or not, that is the council's final decision, Centurion. You have permission to take your leave." Zethias says as the rest of the council members begin to sail out of the audience chamber.

They are all aged bodies and they move slowly because of it. They deliberate slowly as well. I curse them under my breath as I leave; furious. If they want to prevent me from officially going through with my experiments, then I will have to go through with them without approval. The results alone would be enough to convince them. However, I should be careful. They will no doubt be watching my Dreaming because of this. If I Dream even once by accident, I could be considered a danger to the commune and be terminated. It looks like my approach will have to be one of stealth until I can find the being I need. A trip to Earth in person might be necessary. I sped out of the audience chambers and into the congress. Commune members were flitting about as they discussed philosophy and the meaning of existence. I scoff under my breath. Amateurs; all of them. My experiments would show how much influence we could have on sentient races. My experiments would warrant a vast rethinking of how the commune interacted with the rest of the universe. Changes needed to be made.

Eurydice flits up to me and glows purple.

"Something is the matter, isn't it, brother." She says. She is far wiser than the elders give her credit for.

I force a pleasant sparkle and lie to re-assure her.

"The council did not allow everything in my proposal, dear sister. But I have enough permission to go through with a basic experiment. I can only hope that the results warrant the council to lend me more."

She flits about me playfully.

"I am happy for you brother. When will you be taking your leave? Will you be telling mother of your departure?"

Eurydice knows of my tenuous relationship with our mother. I am too much like my father.

"She only needs to know of my success, don't you agree?" I say, sparkling again.

"If you succeed, brother."

I glare at her cheekiness.

"Do you doubt me, sister? I'm hurt."

She giggles at my joke and bounces up and down in front of me.

"But when will you be leaving?" she asks again.

I haven't thought about it. We cross the congress together as I ponder an answer to her question.

"Possibly tonight if I can gather enough energy. If not tonight, then tomorrow evening."

"Very well, then. Have a safe journey if I do not see you tomorrow."

"Thank you."

She floats away back into the congress as I make my way towards my home. Much meditation was in order if I was going to make the physical trip to Earth in one attempt. There is no better time than the present. My being would not be in existence forever.
