..."Crickets"...

So. A lot of nitpicking went into this chapter and, well, I did it somehow. I just hope it wasn't too soon, I don't think it was too soon. Wasn't really my decision anyway, just kinda happened.

Anyway, you know the deal: click all the buttons, and be sure to tell me if anything was lacking. It was certainly interesting to write this chapter. Oh! And if you're new to the series, start at chapter one, or you're going to miss... everything.

But, enjoy it!

Chapter Nine

Falren woke at the dawn, just before the sun's rays cast aside the grey shroud of morning. He stared up at the ceiling, the soft warmth ever present next to him. Velanis was still fast asleep as he carefully worked to extract himself from her embrace. The fact that she was so deep in sleep meant he was able to free himself without waking her, albeit she did unconsciously try to hold him there.

Free of her reach he climbed from the bed, looking back at her as she curled into a half-ball, maw slightly parted as she continued on with her slumber. On an urge he lightly pulled the cloth blanket over her, before retrieving his boots. As he slipped them on, he had to wonder what kind of state she would wake in. She hadn't drunk that much, but Sergals and drink wasn't something he'd ever seen mixed before. Well, in any case he'd allow her to sleep, let her enjoy the peace while she could.

He stepped over to the door, opening and closing it as silently as he was able before making his way downstairs. It didn't seem like anyone else was awake yet, but he figured Aemon had earned himself a little rest after the work he'd put into Velanis' mail. The silence was fine with him for now in any case, as he navigated his way to the small kitchen area. There was an assortment of apples resting on the short counter and he procured himself one before heading back to the main room, then from there the door leading to the area behind the house.

The morning was cool as he stepped outside, a dull, cloud-spotted sky greeting him. The space was moderate in size, a square area of grass resting in the otherwise grey surroundings of the city. It was big enough that there was a small roofed stable affair attached to the back of the home, and that was where he made his way. His horse was housed underneath its shelter, the saddle having been removed from its back to rest inside.

"Hello, old boy." Falren greeted the creature in his usual fashion.

The horse looked up at him with a dark eye as he placed the apple on a nearby post, to which it quickly migrated.

"Looks like we'll be going back home." He said, patting the large animals neck. "You're probably up for it more than I am, but Velanis isn't leaving me much choice."

The horse gave a snort, chomping at the apple. Though if it were in annoyance to the thing speaking to it, or understanding, he couldn't know.

"You probably don't care either way though, do you?" He asked with a chuckle.

The creature left him in silence, munching on its fruit as he stroked its neck. To think that after all this time he would actually be making that journey once more. Only this time he'd not be leaving, but returning, and with two Sergals. First though, it seemed he'd be taking a little side trip to Velanis' clan. That... would prove interesting no doubt. The sound of a door opening drew his thoughts to a close, and with one final pat he made to depart the makeshift stable.

"Ah, there you are." Melan called as he stepped into the open. "Thought I heard you earlier but I didn't want to wake Vel up."

"Aye. Woke early this morning." He said, walking over. "Is something wrong?"

"No, not at all." She said with a shake of her head. "But I was just making breakfast and was wondering if you wanted any."

"Ah, alright." He replied.

"Come on then, it's almost ready." She said finally before retreating back into the house.

He followed after her, shutting the door behind him as he walked back into the living area. Aemon was awake and sitting at the table, giving him the typical enthusiastic greeting.

"Hello there, Falren." Aemon said as he stopped by the table. "How did you sleep?"

"Oh, fine." He responded, looking over at him. "I think you probably have a good idea though."

"Ah..." The man muttered, rubbing at his neck. "Wasn't too bad, was it?"

"No, but she won't feel too pleasant when she wakes up I think." He guessed.

"Well she was curious, so I figured I'd let her try it." Aemon said with a shrug.

Falren hummed, turning to watch Melan come back into the room with their food. She set the plates down, glancing over at him.

"Will Vel be coming down, or...?" She questioned.

"No, I doubt she's awake yet." He said, gesturing to the plates. "I'll bring it to her."

He retrieved the two plates, for both him and her, and balanced them in an arm, turning and making his way to the stairs. His hold on the dishes was a bit precarious as he ascended the stairs, but he made it to the room all right. Single-handed he opened the door and stepping inside, quietly walking over to the bed after he'd closed it.

Velanis still appeared asleep as he set the plates down on the side table, still half curled with the sheet over her. He reached out a hand and gently nudged her shoulder, causing her to give a groan as it roused her. Her amber eyes cracked open to peer at him blearily, only to have her close them again with half whine, half groan.

"Why does my head hurt?" She muttered quietly, bringing her hands up to cradle said location.

"That's what happens if you drink too much or, well, in you're case never had it, I suppose." He replied softly, sitting on the edge of the bed. "Here, eat something. It will help."

He offered her one of the plates, and she slowly sat upright before taking it. She stared at the plate and its contents with narrowed eyes, meekly picking up a piece of meat and nibbling on it.

"I don't like this..." She stated, rubbing at her eyes.

"Aemon failed to mention this part of it." He said, resting his own plate in his lap.

Velanis gave a grumbling growl as she picked at her meal. "Why do your kind drink that stuff so much if this is what happens?"

"Well, you get used to it after a while I suppose." He replied, eating his own food. "I wouldn't know though, never cared for it."

"I can see why." She replied with a snort, wincing a bit.

"Do you remember any of last night?" He asked curiously.

"Yes." She said, glancing up at him with a subdued grin. "It was... nicer than usual."

"Ah, yeah." He replied flatly.

Falren was aware of two amber eyes watching him. "I also remember you promising to show me that case 'in the morning'."

"Yes... I suppose I did." He said, glancing over to where it lay. "Finish eating, and then you can see what's inside."

She gave a grunt, but set about clearing her plate with a bit more enthusiasm. For his part he ate quietly, staring at the motionless case thoughtfully. He had to wonder why his master had trusted that to him, but then, in the end there weren't many choices.

Still, what he'd expected him to do with it he couldn't guess. He wasn't blind to the trust his master must have had in him to pass that heirloomto him though; Falren knew that he'd possessed it for countless years. And then it had been given to him, of all people...

"So, will you show me what's inside now?" Velanis asked, licking her claws clean as she set the empty plate aside.

"Yes..." He replied, putting his thoughts away for another time.

He stacked his plate on top of hers, climbing to his feet and crossing the short distance to the case. He bent down to retrieve it, lifting the weighty thing in both hands and bringing it back to the bed. Velanis watched intently as he placed it on the bed, her aching head apparently forgotten in the wake of her curiosity.

"This... was your teacher's then, yes?" She asked, reaching out a hand to gingerly touch the smooth surface.

"Yes." He stated. "It was very significant to him."

"Ah..." She replied slowly. "You don't have to show it to me, if you don't want to."

"No, I will." He said dismissively. "I think you'd... like to see it anyway."

With that he deftly went about undoing the latches holding the lid closed, splitting it in two as he unfolded it on the bed. Velanis looked over the contents, tilting her head slightly. Inside were the familiar pair of blades, both crafted to mirror and complement each other. They resembled his sword in their craftsmanship, though they each were longer, and a bit more... elegant. They had a smooth flow to them, bearing no cross-guards to mar that appearance. By no means were they for show however; they were made to serve a purpose, much like his blade.

"Swords?" Velanis asked curiously, giving a frown.

"Not... quite." He said, moving his hands to remove them from their slot on each half of the case. "They're two parts, and what they form isn't a 'sword' in the same sense."

"Oh..." She muttered, watching him as he freed the two pieces from their holdings.

It was a strange feeling to be holding them, as he methodically brought them together at the hilts. His master had showed him them before, and let him handle them... it, on occasion. He'd only started to teach him how to wield it towards the end, when they'd begun to spar with quarterstaffs. Falren laughed inwardly at that, the amount of bruises he received didn't change much with weapon choice.

He soon had the weapon returned to its complete state, the two halves locking together at the hilts seemlessly. It had some weight to it, and was probably as long as he was tall, if not longer. Although that wasn't much of a surprise, considering it was made for someone at least a head taller than him. He balanced the weapon, looking it over in its much familiar state. It had been awhile since he'd seen it. Velanis had her head cocked, gazing up and down its length.

"So what kind of... blade is that?" She asked.

"He called it a 'war-blade' once." Falren said to her. "If it had any other names beyond the obvious though, I don't know them."

Velanis gave a hum, gesturing to the weapon. "May I... hold it?"

He hesitated, but after a moment he gave a nod and held it out to her. She gingerly brought a hand up, wrapping it around the wire-bound middle. He let it go, transferring it to her grip and letting her awkwardly balance the weapon.

"It is... different." She mused, wrapping her other hand around the haft. "It must be difficult to use."

"No more difficult than learning to wield any weapon for the first time." He said with a small shrug. "Once you have a natural feel for it, it isn't so different. It requires patience and training, much like anything else."

"I suppose." She muttered. "Were these a common thing there?"

"No. That is the only one I've ever seen in person." He told her. "It is... something you earn, I believe. He was never truly forthcoming about his past, but his station was... important, you could say."

"He raised you from a hatchling, yet never told you about himself?" Velanis asked, cocking her head at him.

No." He said with a frown. "I'm not even sure why he did that much, but, I suppose he just saw potential."

"Well, it is a good thing he did." She said, grinning at him.

"Aye, I guess it is." He said distantly.

"Thank you for showing it to me, Falren." She said as she passed the weapon back to him. "Your master seems like an... interesting person."

"Yes, he was." He said somberly, taking the object and beginning to separate it back into its two halves.

Velanis eyed him as he carefully replaced them into their cushioned holdings, closing the lid and latching it closed. He knew she had more questions on the subject; she was too curious not to. But he didn't feel like delving into those questions, and she seemed to sense that. Now that he'd sated her curiosity, at least for now, he took the case and returned it to its resting place by his other belongings, before moving back to the bed and sitting down. Velanis took a seat next to him, resting her head in her hands.

"So this clan you were raised with, they were large, yes?" Velanis asked him.

"At the time they were." He replied. "Why?"

"Well... what happened to them? Were you not welcome?" She continued.

"For the most part I wasn't fondly liked. There were some amongst them that were... kind to me, but..." He said, letting out a slow breath. "It doesn't matter anymore."

"Falren..." She pressed him. "What happened?"

He cast a glance at her as she stared at him, a hard set to his features. "For all I know, everyone I knew is dead now or scattered to the wind. I wasn't given much choice in whether I wanted to leave or not."

"Ah." She said quietly, ears drooping. "Sorry."

"It wasn't your doing." He stated, clenching his jaw.

He felt the bed shift a bit as she moved, feeling her settle next to him as she nestled her head into the crook of his neck again. For once he didn't question her, simply let her do what she inevitably would.

"I mean, sorry for making you go back there." She said, next to his ear.

"We aren't there yet. There's still quite a bit of ground to cover first." He replied with a snort. "Maybe it won't be that bad though, to go back."

"Well, you'll... have me, yes?" She said, nuzzling his neck lightly. "So you won't be alone. And Naleen is coming as well."

"Aye." He said slowly, staring at the wall. "Velanis, why do you do this?"

"Do... what? This?" She asked, nuzzling him again for emphasis.

"Yes." He agreed simply. "Why do you insist on doing it?"

"Because...I like it." She said, ears twitching. "My mother used to do it to me, and you're the only one who I've ever been that close to."

"Ah." He muttered, giving a frown.

"But... you've never had anyone like that, have you?" She asked, tilting her head at him.

"No..." He said, a somber grin crossing his features at the thought. "My master was never the touching kind, I think."

Velanis laughed a bit at that, resting her head on his shoulder.

"My head still hurts." She stated with a snort.

"It will pass eventually." He said reassuringly.

"I hope so." She replied with a grumble.

"Have you thought about when you may be ready to leave?" He asked, glancing sidelong at her as she squeezed her eyes shut.

"A little." She responded quietly. "Soon I think... but not until my head stops hurting."

"It won't last that long." He said. "I'd just like to know so I can give Aemon some warning is all."

"Well... maybe tomorrow? Or the day after?" She asked, unsure.

"We can, if you want." He replied. "You're sure there isn't anything else you want to see in the city though?"

"I think you showed me the best parts." She said with a small grin.

"I'll let Aemon and Melan know then." He consented, grimacing inwardly. "Although, they might not let us go quietly."

"What do you mean?" Velanis wondered.

"Ah, you'll most likely see." He said, making a gesture that he wanted to get up.

"Okay..." She said confusedly as he stood.

"I'll go let them know." He informed her. "Do you want me to bring you some tea?"

"No..." The Sergal declined, slowly climbing to her own feet. "I'll come with you. I can't sleep anymore with my head hurting like this."

"Alright." He said as she made her way over to him. "Some air might help."

Falren opened the door and let her through, following behind her as they made their way to the stairs. The morning was still relatively young, and he was hoping Aemon hadn't left for his smithy yet. It wasn't horrible if he had, it would just save them having to wait for him to return, or going there themselves. The stairs deposited them on the first floor, leaving them to proceed to the front room in search of Aemon. The burly man didn't appear to be present, but they'd soon find out either way.

"Melan." He announced to the woman as she wiped down the table idly, as if spotting some debris that requiring cleaning.

"Ah you're back, and with Vel this time I see." She said, looking up at them. "How are you feeling, Vel?"

Velanis gave a growl at that. "Not very good."

"Sorry." Melan said, and apologetic expression on her face. "Probably shouldn't have let you have even that much. I don't think Aemon expected it to hit you so hard."

"Speaking of him." Falren started, sparing Velanis from having to talk anymore. "Has he already gone to his shop?"

"Mhm." She answered with a nod. "Left not too long ago. Why?"

"Ah, well, Velanis has decided she'd like to leave relatively soon. Probably in the next few days." He told the woman. "I thought I'd give you two a forewarning."

"Oh... I see." Melan said, with a bit of a sad look. "About that time, is it? Oh well, couldn't have expected you to stay in one place forever. But," She perked up a bit as an idea crossed her mind, "How about we have a nice dinner later, as a way to see you off?"

"I had a feeling you'd say something like that." He said, glancing at Velanis. "I suppose there isn't much point arguing against it."

"No, there really isn't." She said, giving a smirk. "But how 'bout you go let Aemon know?"

"That will work." Falren said with a nod, an idea of his own already popping into his head.

"Alright then." Melan said with a smile. "I'll leave you two to it, and figure out what we'll be having for the occasion."

Melan turned and walked off to the kitchen then, leaving them to their own matters. After she'd left he turned to Velanis, waiting until she looked at him questioningly.

"Feel like paying a visit to Aemon?" He asked, giving a small grin. "And then stopping by the markets quickly?"

"Sure..." She replied. "But why the markets?"

"Well, I'm not going to let them do all the work." He said, making his way to the front door. "Figure I'll make my own contribution, otherwise they wouldn't have it."

"Ah." Velanis uttered, walking over to him. "Alright then."

He opened the door and stepped out into the slowly climbing sun, holding it for the Sergal as she transitioned onto the stones. Falren saw her wince as the bright daylight met her eyes, but she didn't make any move to go back inside as he let the door shut.

"You can stay here if you want. You don't have to come." He suggested as she stood next to him.

"No, I'll come." She said, rubbing her eyes.

He gave a nod, lifting a hand on impulse. He hesitated a moment, before relenting and placing his hand to rub at the back of her neck. She turned her head to him and gave a smile; eyes squinted to keep the light out of her eyes.

"Let's get going then." He stated; removing his hand from her neck and starting a slow walk down the street.

***

She followed Falren, keeping her eyes squinted at her feet as they walked. Why Humans insisted on drinking that stuff was beyond her. Yes, the feeling it gave her after drinking it was... different, but if this was what it did she could live without it. She gave a snort; damn human could have at least warned her.

"So Velanis." Falren started. "I know you said your clan was from the mountains, but would you be able to roughly place them on a map? I know the area a bit, but it would help knowing a direction before hand."

"Ah... I suppose I could." She replied, looking up at him. "I've never really used maps before, I mostly let landmarks guide me. Scents and feel as well, and memory."

"So if I showed you a map with some detail you may be able to point it out?" He pondered.

"Maybe." She said with a shrug. "I know the land around my clan, so all you would need to know is the area and I could do the rest."

"Alright." He said, looking ahead. "I'll see if I can find you a decent map later then."

She grunted in response, blinking slowly at the dull throbbing in her head.

"Your clan, were they all from Nel'Vrak?" Falren asked. "I gather that your mother was."

"I'm not sure." She said, giving a frown. "They didn't look like me or my mother, if that means anything."

"It can." He answered. "Like humans you don't all look the same, it depends on the region and their bloodline."

"Maybe they didn't then." She replied, ears twitching. "They didn't really talk to me that much."

"It's fine, I was just wondering." Falren dismissed. "For now let's just let Aemon know of our plans."

She glanced up, the ever present sight of the man's shop in view. They crossed the familiar street to its front door, Falren opening the door first and leading her through. As she stepped inside she was met by a bit of a surprise, seeing Aemon present in the front room rather than out back working. He was standing at a counter along the wall, looking over some sheets of paper laid out there. The man looked up at the sound of their entry, disregarding his previous matter for the moment.

"Oh, hello there lad, Vel." He greeted them, giving her a sheepish grin. "Didn't expect you to be coming by. Somethin' wrong?"

"No, nothing's wrong." Falren clarified. "Surprised to see you up here though."

"Aye, well, gotta keep track of my business somehow." He said, waving at the papers. "How are you little lady?"

She gave a growl, glaring at the man. "I'm sure you know."

"Ah... yes." He replied with an awkward expression. "Suppose you woke up feeling like you got kicked in the head then?"

Her glare was enough of an answer.

"Sorry, guess I shoulda warned you about that. Thought you'd have been able to handle two cups... well, two big cups." He said, scratching his beard. "Anyway, what brings you two here?"

"I was hoping on catching you earlier before you left." Falren told him. "But we came by to let you know that we'll be setting off soon, most likely in the next few days."

"Ah." Aemon replied, giving a sullen expression. "Was wondering when you'd decide to get moving again. You told Melan already, I take it?"

"Yes." Falren confirmed. "She has something planed for later tonight as well."

"I'm sure she does." The man said with a chuckle. "Well, since I won't be talking you out of it I guess I'll just be sure to come back in time."

"Alright Aemon." Falren uttered. "I'll leave you to your work then."

"Aye, we'll talk tonight." Aemon said in farewell, returning to his papers. "Hope you feel better Vel."

She snorted, looking to Falren. He gave her a nod, turning back to the front door and starting his way out. She moved after him, stepping out into the world again.

"Okay." He declared to her. "One quick stop to the markets, and then if you still aren't feeling better we can get you back so you can rest."

She replied with a grunt, following him as he guided her through the streets. Not that she needed to be guided at this point; she just wasn't in a state where she felt like paying attention. But, she was feeling a bit better, so hopefully that boded well...

They soon came to the market avenue, the busy street cluttered with people at the hour. It was all a familiar sight to her now, though by no means had she grown used to the plethora of things here nor the amount of people. It made her wonder if there were places like this that were home to her kind. The only other group of Sergals she'd met was her clan, and even they weren't very large. It was just something else that would be eventually answered she supposed, another thing to drive her curiosity.

"Is there anything particular you want, Velanis?" Falren asked her, breaking her line of thought.

"Ah... not really, no." She replied, looking around at the people and stalls. "But... do you think I could get another of those 'pastries'?"

"Yes." He answered with a chuckle, passing one of the coins to her.

"Thank you." She said, looking down at the piece of metal in her palm.

"Of course."

"Falren." She began, holding the coin in her claws. "Aren't these things significant to you humans?"

"Well, in a way yes." He replied with a shrug. "As you've found out you use them to trade for other items. I made my fair share from providing my skills, but it doesn't hold a 'significant' value to me. I wasn't raised with it, and, I don't mind letting you use it at all."

"Ah." She aired, closing her fist over the small circle.

"Go on, I'll finish up here." He concluded, waving her off.

She turned her gaze away from him, looking for a vendor that would have what she was looking for. It didn't really take much searching; there were a number of stalls selling that sort of food. But, she was looking for something like she'd had before; she quite liked that and was hoping on finding it again. Maybe if she could find that one man again...

With some luck she did find that merchant from before, manning the same stall. He greeted her in a friendly manner, though beyond replying in kind her current state didn't leave her much desire to prolong the encounter. She gestured to what she wanted, offering up the coin as he wrapped them in parchment. She took the bundle, giving him a quick nod as he thanked her before turning away.

With her pastries in hand she started her way back to where Falren was, looking out over the groups of people. She was about to unwrap the paper and set into one of the sweet creations, but something caught her eye amongst the crowd. She altered her course, walking instead towards the thing, or person rather, in question. The striking red stuck out, the tall figure it belonged to easily recognizable.

"Naleen?" She asked as she drew near, causing the Sergal to turn a curious eye to her.

"Velanis." The female said; turning from the stall she'd been looking over to face her. "And what might you be doing here? Shopping for things, I see."

"Ah, yes." She replied, holding the package up. "I like these pastry things."

"I am sure." Naleen stated with a smile. "They are quite the tasteful morsels for someone who's never had them before."

"Yes, they are." Velanis agreed. "Do you... want one?"

Naleen gave a hum, quirking her head. "Alright."

She unwrapped the bundle, taking one of the sweet creations and passing it to Naleen. She took the offered item in her claws, giving a thanks as she took a bite from it. Velanis took her own also, deciding that she might as well eat it.

"It has been awhile since I've had one of these." Naleen said. "It hasn't lessened their appeal though. Did Falren come here with you?"

"Yes." She replied with a nod. "I was on my way back to him after buying these, but I spotted you."

"Ah. I suppose I stick out amongst the crowds, yes?" She said with a chuckle. "How are you feeling? Your demeanor is different."

"I'm... fine." Velanis replied, squinting as she chewed. "It's just the friends of Falren that we're staying with let me try some of their drink. And, well..."

"I see now." Naleen said with a grin. "That explains your wincing then."

"Yes..." She said, ears drooping.

"Do not worry, it will pass." Naleen said reassuringly. "One cannot blame you for being curious."

She grunted, nibbling at the soft, doughy confection. "Oh, Naleen."

"Yes?" The female prompted, emerald eyes glancing at her.

"I decided I wish to set off soon." Velanis told her.

"Have you then?" Naleen said, looking at her knowingly. "This doesn't surprise me, but it is good I prepared when I did."

"And... Falren's friends decided to make a dinner, to 'see us off'." She said, watching the red-furred Sergal intently. "Do you think you might want to join us?"

"Would these friends of his allow that?" Naleen questioned. "I can't imagine many humans would enjoy having a strange Sergal at their table."

"I'm fairly certain they wouldn't mind having you at all." Velanis stated. "They are very welcoming to me, and being that you... are a friend they'd welcome you as well."

"Well... alright youngling. I will come with you." Naleen consented after a hesitant moment. "It has been quite some time since I had company for a meal. It will be... good, I think. Now, shall we join up with Falren?"

Velanis gave a nod, popping the last chunk into her maw before turning back in the direction she had been heading. She led Naleen back to the spot where she'd left Falren, finding him to not have wandered to far from here he was last. He had a large bundle tucked in an arm, and as they drew nearer he appeared as though he was waiting. Falren quickly spotted them approaching through the crowd, quirking a brow slightly as he saw Naleen accompanying her.

"Hello again, Falren." The female greeted him.

"Naleen..." He responded in kind. "You do have a way of showing up, don't you?"

"Yes, I suppose I do." She said with a laugh, eyes filled with mirth.

"I asked her if she'd like to eat with us tonight, and she said yes." Velanis told him.

"Ah, well that will let us discuss some things." Falren stated. "Aemon and Melan won't mind getting to meet you either, I'd imagine. Though... he may end up making a nickname for you."

"A nickname?" Naleen wondered, giving a smirk. "I would be interested to see what he comes up with."

Falren gave a grunt, turning to her. "Did you find what you were looking for, Velanis?"

"Yes." She replied with a grin.

"That's good." He said with a nod. "Well, since we both found what we were looking for, we may as well head back. Bring this to Melan so she can prepare it."

With that he turned, starting off in the direction that would lead them back to the home. She fell into step with him, Naleen following behind a few steps as she observed where they were taking her. They remained quiet for a time, their curious little trio walking down the streets. Naleen seemed to keep her distance from them, as if she wished to keep to her own space. But then again... she didn't think the other female wished to get as close to Falren as she did.

It was stretching into the later part of afternoon when they came back to their current home, their trip to Aemon's and the markets having been concluded. There was still some life left to the day before night would fall, which left plenty of time to talk with Naleen and to discuss those "things" Falren spoke of.

"So this is where you've been staying then?" Naleen mused as they walked up to the building. "Seems like a nice little home."

"Yes... it is." Falren responded distantly, moving to open the door.

He pushed the door inwards, beckoning them inside as he crossed over the threshold. Velanis followed him in next, leaving Naleen to come in behind her as she looked around the interior of the house curiously. She didn't see Melan in the space, so she assumed the woman was merely in another part of the home.

"Naleen, where have you been staying anyway?" Velanis asked, drawing her gaze.

"Ah, I have a place." She answered. "It is not so hard, not for someone like me at least."

"Oh." She muttered. "What is it you did, with your old clan before... you came here?"

"I..." Naleen tilted her head thoughtfully, grinning and flashing her teeth. "Hunted."

"To help feed your clan?" She wondered.

"In a way, young one, in a way." The female responded with a chuckle.

"Ah..."

She looked over at Falren, as watched the exchange distantly. Her glance seemed to rouse him, for he blinked and focused his eyes on her.

"I'll go put this in the kitchen, and then go find Melan so we can introduce her to Naleen here." He said quickly, making off into the house.

Naleen gave an amused hum after he'd left. "You two get along well, I think."

"What?" She questioned, ears flicking.

"He has seen much. It says something that he extends such trust to you, in light of that." Naleen stated. "How much has he told you, about his past?"

"Well... not much." Velanis said with a frown. "But he tells me a little more and more. He showed me... ah, something that he keeps."

Naleen waved dismissively, giving a smile. "You will not slight me by keeping it to yourself. We _all_have our secrets, child. But... I think I already have an idea of this thing he keeps."

"You... do?" She asked, cocking her head.

"Yes. This old Sergal as been many places, and seen many things." She said genuinely. "I have many stories I could tell, some not for... others to hear. But, that talk is not for tonight, I think."

"Alright." She said with a frown, unwanted questions popping into her mind.

"Don't worry." Naleen said with a chuckle. "Perhaps in time I will tell you them. For now though, I think it is time I meet your friend."

The sound of footsteps accompanied Naleen's statement, serving to alert them of Falren's return shortly before he entered the room with Melan in tow.

"You really didn't have to do that you know." The woman said insistently, apparently referring to whatever Falren had bought.

"Consider it my small way of repaying you." Falren said to her. "But, I brought someone here for you to meet."

Melan opened her mouth to voice another complaint, but she went quiet as her yes fell upon the red-coated female. Naleen for her part had a smile on her face, watching the exchange with curious amusement.

"Melan, this is Naleen." Falren introduced. "She's the one who helped Velanis when those other Sergals attacked her."

"Oh!" She exclaimed. "Well it's nice to meet you then, Naleen."

"Yes, and you as well." She replied formally.

"I didn't realize that person was a Sergal as well." Melan said. "Is she a friend of yours now?"

"In a way." Naleen said with a chuckle.

"I've talked with her a bit." Velanis spoke up. "She's actually going to be coming with us when we leave."

"Is she then?" The woman aired with a bit of surprise. "Well, that's good that you'll have more friendly company."

"I, ah... invited her to eat with us tonight, if that's alright." She said sheepishly.

"Of course!" Melan stated with a smile. "Friends of yours are certainly welcome, and since she's going with you and this dinner is to see you off it seems fitting."

"Well, thank you for allowing me in, Human." Naleen said, dipping her head at Melan.

"I hope you enjoy it." She said cheerily. "Now how about I make some tea, I'm sure Vel wouldn't mind. Has your head improved at all?"

"A little, yes." Velanis responded, bringing her attention back to the still-dull throbbing.

"Some tea will help, why don't you three take a seat and I'll bring the drinks out." Melan made to turn, but paused. "Do you like tea Naleen? Or would you prefer something else?"

"I quite like tea, yes." The female answered with a laugh.

"Alright, I'll be back with those and then I can see to making the food for later." She truly turned this time, heading off to brew the tea.

After her departure the three of them took their seats around the table, settling into the chairs comfortably.

"She is quite friendly, considering I am a stranger." Naleen observed, resting her head in her hands. "And that I'm a Sergal."

"They are always warm to me and my... friends." Falren replied. "What race you are doesn't much matter to them."

"A rare thing, I think." She concluded. "And this human's... mate, yes? Will he be returning here soon?"

"More or less." Falren replied with a shrug. "Before nightfall, unless he has orders that he has to fill."

"Ah." Naleen nodded. "But there is nowhere for me to be, so there is nothing wrong with simply relaxing."

The three of them talked for a bit, Melan bringing their tea as promised and eventually joining them after she'd gotten her cooking going. They talked for a time, mostly sticking to casual topics as Melan had only just met Naleen. Her head was finally on its way to feeling better at least, and at one point she had happily rested her it on Falren's shoulder. She'd felt the telltale rigidness come over him at her contact; perhaps because she did it in front of others. She didn't really see any point in hiding it though; she felt like doing it, so she did. Melan for her part didn't pay it any heed, though Naleen did give them an amused stare.

The hour soon grew late with their talks, and Melan left them to go finish preparing the dinner that would be served once Aemon showed. They waited quietly, in what she imagined was anticipation for the coming meal. At least... on her part it was. Now that she was feeling better she had quite the appetite building up, and she'd learned by now that Melan didn't make unappetizing food. The scents that were beginning to waft from the kitchen, as they called it, served to at least partially prove that.

"Falren?" She prompted.

He gave a hum from next to her, glancing over.

"What is it you bought?" She asked.

"You'll see soon enough." He replied, giving a chuckle.

She gave a snort, but didn't try and press him for more. He was right, anyway. Though, maybe she wouldn't have to wait that much longer...

Her ears picked up the sound of footfalls outside, sooner than the others save for perhaps Naleen. A few breaths later a firm knock served to alert them to Aemon's return, just before he opened the door and stepped inside. His gaze came upon the three sitting at the table, a surprised look upon his face as he saw Naleen. Nevertheless he still bore the same enthusiasm.

"Hail!" He called boisterously. "Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long."

"No, you didn't." Falren said.

"Good." Aemon replied as he walked over, pulling out a seat at the end of the table. "And who might this be?"

"Aemon, this is Naleen." He told. "She's the one who helped Velanis when she had that... run in."

"Ah." He nodded in remembrance. "Well I can thank you in person then!"

"It was no trouble." Naleen said with a smile. "I was merely helping another female."

"Aye perhaps, but no one else did so the thanks still stands." Aemon stated. "And for that you're certainly welcome here."

Naleen dipped her head at the man, a sparkle of amusement in her eyes.

"She's also asked to accompany us, and we agreed." Falren informed him.

"More the merrier, eh lad?" Aemon responded with a chuckle. "Seems like you have a way of finding 'em, or maybe they find you."

Falren gave a grunt, taking a drink from his cup of tea.

"Melan is off in the kitchen, I take it?" He asked, to which Falren gave a nod. "Ah, well I'm going to see if she needs help with anything. And grab a drink of my own."

Aemon pushed out of his chair at that, walking through a doorway that led to wherever the cooking area was in the home.

"He seems an amusing sort." Naleen said with a grin.

"Oh, he certainly is." Falren replied with a snort.

"Ah, but to me that's not a bad thing." The female offered.

"No... maybe not." He replied flatly.

She took to resting her head on Falren's shoulder again, content to keep quiet while they waited. In truth they didn't need to wait very long, for Melan had done a good job of timing her cooking. So, in only a short time her relaxing was brought to an end, Melan returning to the room with plates in hand and Aemon assisting her in carrying the nights fare. She sat up as Melan placed one of the empty plates in front of her, sniffing at the air as Aemon began to set down separate plates holding the food.

The first two he set down contained servings of vegetables that humans seemed to like; one containing more of the white mash, and the other a pile of green, stemmed things. All in all it wasn't bad, but not quite what she was waiting for. What she was waiting for, Aemon soon returned with, setting down in the center of the table. She couldn't really name what the large section of meat that adorned the plate may have belonged to, but she did know that it certainly smelled good. It appeared as though Melan had crusted the meat with some kind of herbs, adding to the aroma.

When Aemon had taken a seat, he picked up a knife that accompanied the plate and set about cutting it into slices. He made quick work of it, leaving the meat evenly sectioned.

"Well, help yourselves." Aemon said, dishing out some of the white mash before passing it around.

They soon had their shares distributed to their plates, and wasted little words as they all set into their food. The meat proved to taste just as good as it smelled, and she happily chewed down the tender meal. She tried the white and green substances as well, finding that they weren't terrible. She noticed that Naleen seemed to share her same opinion, favoring the meat more than anything.

"So Naleen, where are you from?" Melan asked after they'd all sampled it in peace, looking up at the female.

"I am from Nel'Vrak." She replied after she'd swallowed her mouthful. " It is quite far away, and I doubt most humans would know it."

"I've only heard its name from Falren, but I'm afraid that is as much as I know." The woman said. "What is it like?"

"It is not so different from this place." Naleen said thoughtfully. "Wilder perhaps, and the seasons can be a bit harder. Large as well, I miss the forests at times."

"What made you leave, if I may ask?" Melan questioned.

Naleen gave a hum, looking at her plate's contents. "That is a long story, and not quite one fit for this occasion, I think."

"Oh, apologies." She responded.

"But it is not so bad." Naleen said, looking up with a smile. "One cannot dwell on the past, and now it looks as though I will get to see my home once more. I never had reason to go back, but now I think I shall."

"Well, that's good." Melan said, collecting some food with her fork. "Always good to have friendly company."

"Yes, it is." She agreed. "How is it you came to know Falren?"

"When I first came here years ago they... helped me find my path again." Falren answered.

"Ah, I see." Naleen replied. "It can be hard, at times. This I know."

No one seemed to have any more questions after that, all finishing their meals. Velanis had her own questions, but... she didn't really feel now was the time to go asking them. She'd have plenty of time it seemed, if they would all be spending the long journey together. She made quick work of her remaining food, leaving the plate bare as she set down the fork. Everyone else appeared close behind her in that pace, and soon all the plates were bare.

"How was it, Naleen?" Melan asked.

"Quite good, thank you." She replied. "It... has been some time since I've had such a meal."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it." She said as she moved about collecting the empty dishes. "If you'll excuse me for a moment I'm going to get these taken care of. Husband, could you give me a hand?"

"Aye." Aemon replied, standing to his feet and aiding in removing the plates.

Together they quickly had them all stacked up, carrying them away to be cleaned. She felt a bit of tiredness now that they'd eaten, and after how good of a state she'd started the day in.

"You can head to sleep if you want." Falren said to her, apparently noticing her drowsiness. "A lot to be done tomorrow, and I'm sure you could use the rest."

"Alright..." She said with a hum, leaning over to flick her tongue up his face before climbing to her feet. "Thank you."

"Aye..." He replied slowly.

She turned away with a nod, moving off towards the second floor. She made it there without fault, and in a much better state then she had the previous night, opening the door into the room she'd taken to sharing. Without much delay she sat down on the edge of the bed, looking around at the interior being dimly lit by evening light. She tipped over onto the bed, curling up and leaving a spot for Falren to inevitably occupy. Which, she hoped would be soon...

***

"She seems to be quite attached to you." Naleen pointed out to him after Velanis had left.

He hummed in response, looking down at the now-empty cup of tea.

"It doesn't seem like a bad thing, I think." She mused. "I have to wonder what it is you're afraid of."

"It's not fear." He said. "It's just hard to get close to people. I'm sure you can understand why."

"Yes, but will you let the past continue to influence you?" Naleen questioned, tilting her head at him. "What's done is done yes? She is a nice female, I see no reason to question it."

He exhaled through his nose, bringing a hand up to rub his forehead.

"But it is up to you." Naleen concluded. "Just know that it is unlikely she will remain content for long. Our females can be quite... persuasive. I should know, yes?" She added with a grin.

That line of conversation was cut short before he could respond, Aemon and Melan returning to the room once more. They both took their seats, setting down freshly filled cups for them all.

"Where'd the little lady go off to?" Aemon asked, glancing around.

"She went to sleep." He said, taking a drink from the hot tea.

"Ah, alright." The man said with a chuckle. "Suppose her day wasn't the best it could have been."

"No... I suppose not." He agreed distantly.

"So, will you three be departing tomorrow?" Aemon questioned.

"Either that or the day after." He responded. "The latter seems more likely, there are still some minor details to work out."

"Aye." The man responded, taking a swallow from his cup. "You'll be stopping by Vel's, ah, clan first?"

"Yes." Falren nodded. "It's more or less in the same direction, give or take a bit."

"Ah, all this talk of preparing reminds me that I have my own to do." Naleen said, throwing back the last of her tea. "The hours grows late, and I think I've taken enough of your hospitality for the night."

"Nonsense, we don't mind at all." Aemon waved dismissively. "Do you have a place to stay for the night?"

"Yes." She replied, giving a smile as she stood. "But thank you anyway. The meal was good."

"Alright." Aemon said. "Well take care of yourself then."

"And you as well." Naleen responded. "I will stop by tomorrow to check in, yes?"

"That's fine." Falren agreed. "I doubt we'll be setting off, but we'll be sure to find you either way."

Naleen gave a nod, watching him with a grin. "Enjoy your night, Falren." She said, before making her way to the door.

He watched her slip out the door into the dusk light with a frown, trying to figure out what she meant. Whatever it may have been eluded him; she was certainly a hard one to figure out. There was a lot more to her than she let on, that was for sure.

"She seems like an interesting character." Aemon stated. "And she came from the same place you did?"

"Same land, yes." He said.

"Well, she seems nice enough." Melan added. "Though she doesn't seem to have a happy past either, as far as I can tell."

He gave a thoughtful hum, swallowing down his second cup of tea. "I think I'll retire for the night now. Thank you for the cooking, Melan."

"Anytime." She said as he stood. "Sleep well."

He nodded, making his way out of the room and towards the staircase leading to his... their room, he supposed it had inarguably become. He padded his way to the door, slipping inside quietly on the well-oiled hinges. It was dark in the room, though not dark enough for him to be blind or for him to not see the sleeping form on the bed. He moved to the bed, sitting lightly so as not to disturbed Velanis' sleep while pulled his shirt free. As he hunched over to work on his boots, a soft warmth rubbed at his back, the light scratch of claws telling what it was.

"I thought you were sleeping." He said, tugging the boots off and depositing them on the floor.

"I... couldn't sleep." Velanis replied quietly.

"Is something wrong?" He asked, glancing over his shoulder at her dimly lit eyes.

"No." She said, looking up at him. "I just... wanted you here."

"Ah." He muttered slowly, leaning back onto the bed hesitantly. "Well... here I am."

Velanis gave a hum, quickly wrapping her arms around him and pulling him into her furred form.

"Yes." She said, nuzzling into his neck. "Here you are."

He let out a breath, looking up at the dark ceiling as he tried to relax. He raised a hand to stroke her arm in the usual fashion; it wasn't easy, but he was slowly starting to get used to it. It eluded him as to how exactly it had turned out this way; certainly he didn't intend this to happen when he'd aided her. But... maybe he did think too much, as she'd put it. Just waiting to see what would happen wasn't something he cared to experience though.

"Falren?" Velanis asked quietly, stopping her ministrations to his neck.

"Yes?" He prompted, still looking upwards.

"Have you ever, ah... had a mate?"

He blinked in surprise at that unexpected question, processing how to answer that or why she would care.

"No..." Came his cautious reply.

He narrowed his eyes as he felt her roll onto him, the view above him now invaded by a pair of amber eyes.

"I've never had one either." She said, looking down at him intently. "You like me, yes?"

"I'm not sure this is what you want to do." He replied with a tight-mouthed expression, fairly certain of where she was going.

"I know what I want." She snorted, glaring down at him. "I think you're the one who isn't sure."

"Velanis." He said insistently, moving his hands to try and get her off him. "I'm not the one you want to be-"

The Sergal gave a snarl, grabbing his wrists in an iron grip and pinning them at his sides. He was reminded of how strong she was then, her entire frame lean muscle.

"How are you so sure this isn't what I want?" She snapped at him, glaring angrily.

He looked up at her with a clenched jaw, debating on how he was going to get out of this situation. He got the impression that it could get violent if he tried to wrestle out of it, and he really didn't want to fight her...

"Just..." Velanis said, settling her weight as she straddled him and beginning to lick at his neck again. "Please?"

He remained stubbornly quiet in the matter, unsure of how to respond or act.

"Fine..." She said dejectedly, loosening her grip on his wrists.

The thought that she had given up was quickly shattered though, for no sooner had she released his arms she darted her head forwards and put her jaws around his throat. His muscles went stiff, tensing up at the vulnerable position that put him in, his ingrained instincts acting up. He knew that she didn't intend to harm him, and as if to convey that she continued to lap at his neck, but the actions message was quite clear: she'd be going on with it if he consented or not. She used the leverage her jaw placement gave her to put her hands to other use, trailing down his form lightly.

"Velanis, that's enough." He uttered, as if words would stop her at this point.

Whether or not she heard him she showed no sign, simply kept on with her attentions. Much as his rational mind was trying to find its way out of this situation, his baser one was proving stubborn. He fidgeted in her hold, though it was pointless with her heavier form straddling him and the dominant hold she held with her jaws. He probably could have gotten free if he truly tried, though doing so may lead to an unsavory outcome. But... a part of his consciousness wasn't sure if he wanted to stop her.

Falren glanced down at her as best he could, seeing her with eyes squeezed shut and ears laid back as she explored. He got the impression from her face that this wasn't exactly how she had wanted it, but that she wanted it nonetheless. She fiddled with the ties to the last offensive garment blocking her path, tugging them loose with her claws. He grimaced as she wrapped a hand around him, angling him upward. She exhaled as warmth met him, her hand releasing its grip only for something else entirely to wrap its hold around him.

Velanis murmured against his throat as she sunk downwards, making him clench his hands as heat enveloped him. Her soft fur soon came to press against him, before she slowly rose again, beginning an awkward rhythm. All the while she kept her jaws in place, continuing to lick at his neck as she rose and fell. He stared motionlessly upwards, his mind finding it increasingly difficult as to why he wanted her to stop. Certainly, if he had truly wished her to he would have done something by now...

Velanis gave a growl as he brought his unattended hands up, coming to a decision as he placed the on her sides. She let that growl ebb away when he didn't resist her, slowly releasing her jaws after a moment to right herself. She sat up on him, temporarily stopping her motions to peer at him intently with a spark in her eyes, jaws remaining slightly parted.

"Alright, Vel." He submitted, meeting her amber gaze with his own. "You win."

A large grin stretched her features, displaying her teeth as she bent down and nuzzled his face, tongue flashing out to lick at him.

"Good." She replied lowly, sitting up and resuming her movement.

Falren looked up at her as she moved, her tail waving behind her happily. He moved a hand from her side and brought it to her chest, stroking the soft, thick fur there. She gave a happy growl, grabbing his shoulders to pull him up before wrapping her arms tightly around him. Her claws dug into his back lightly as she nuzzled the crook of his neck, finding a steady pace in the awkward rhythm.

After a time he stopped trying to think, seeing as he'd resigned himself to the situation. He allowed her to continue, stroking her fur as she moved on him in a strange dance... Not that she was leaving him much say in the matter. She clenched her hands as they went on, her claws stinging and warm breath blowing against him as she gave the occasional growl or groan. His own uncontrollable groan joined hers, eventually just closing his eyes to the feeling and resting his head against her form.

Velanis soon picked up her pace, giving quivering breaths as she moved. He could feel that their intimate time would soon come to an end, and no doubt she could as well. It wasn't long then until her movements reached a crescendo, her nuzzling ceasing to instead be replaced in an instant by her jaws clamping down on his shoulder. Her teeth left pinpoints of pain as they punctured his skin, making him give a grunt. In those few moments then, be it from the unexpected pain or simply the finality of it, he reached his peak.

With a long exhale he found release inside her, Velanis giving a rumbling growl as she pressed down one last time. For an unknown time he sat with her pressed against him, the pain of her teeth momentarily forgotten in the blissful haze.

Eventually the aftereffect ebbed away, leaving him to open his eyes as his mind focused back once more on reality. Velanis still had her arms around him, and at some point she had tipped them both down onto the bed. Thankfully she had removed her jaws from his shoulder, now licking gently at the bite she'd given him.

He didn't say anything in that silence, nor could he have even if he tried. Neither did Velanis speak as she kept him locked in her embrace, stopping her cleaning when she'd apparently deemed it tended to. She lowered her head to the pillow, giving a sigh as she nestled against him. He... really couldn't process what had just happened. But as conceded himself to sleep and closed his eyes to her warmth, he decided he didn't much care. He'd leave those thoughts banished until the morning.
