Bernadette: Farewell
"Thank you" I mouthed to the plump walrus being put into the ambulance across the way. Franclin had just retrieved the trans-dimensional beacon I made that allowed Bernadette to contact her caretakers.
The walls between universes were thin enough for those who knew how to send a message between them, but actually moving through to another was a whole different matter. Her race had discovered how to open doors long ago, possibly before this universe came about, but they just didn't know where to open up the passageway. It took tremendous amounts of energy to open portals the way they did, so they couldn't waste it by visiting every universe in the vicinity to find her.
Franclin walked up behind me in the crowd and gently stroked my tail as his hand slid up into my pocket where he deposited the flute beacon. He then moved his hand up under my coat, obscuring it with his body as he gently pet my back, so that no one else in the crowd knew how he played with me. This had become one of his new favorite past times, teasing me in public. I felt nose grow flush with warms as he gently clawed at my back and gently removed his paw from under my coat.
With his touch I almost forgot about the crowd that was surrounding us.
OH! The crowd. This would totally come back to bite me since I had fully expected her to initiate the beacon signal from inside her house. At least then it would have been limited to any passersby that peeked through the window of their house. But no matter, it had to be done. Even though I could have taken her back myself, she had to make the contact since I had gotten her stuck here in the first place.
I hoped her people could find forgiveness for me, or at least some peace with the restoration of their future queen hidden from them for so long. I didn't even know if her race could forgive, but I certainly knew how they could war. It was a small mercy that they only pulled her through instead of visiting ruin on this small world.
