#7 of The Rithmorie Chronicles

The large wolf sat on his branch, watching the sky as it has been changing a lot recently. He looked over to his left and soon saw smoke above the trees. The wolf became worried that his forest was on fire and rushed over to where he saw the smoke. His steps made no sound as he jumped from tree to tree and he came to the edge of the forest only to see what was left of the small village nearby. He peared over to see if there were any survivers, his orange eyes softly glowing underneath his black cloak. He couldn't see anything but burnt down buildings and graves. He quickly scanned the area to see if the person who made the graves was nearby and couldn't find anything. The wolf sat down on a branch and sighed softly.

Soon his ears perked up as he heard feint rustling of leaves underneath him. He looked down to see what it was and his eyes softened in sadness as he saw a small child. The child was naked and holding his arms, shivering like he was cold. The wolf soon realized that he has seen this child before, stealing eggs for a village. Which he allowed for the simple fact that they needed food to survive. He watched the child for a time and soon the child perked his ears up and looked around. The wolf hid behind a tree to remain unseen. Soon two large Jackles appeared and the child bolted, running as fast as he could but the Jackles were faster. The wolf felt like he was going to have to intervien.

Tonka didn't know what to do at first as he tried to dodge the jackles as best as he could but they were just to fast. He was scared and didn't know what to do. he tried using his abilities but nothing was happening. The jackles soon caught him and began to throw him around like a rag doll, hitting him against trees and scratching him up badly. He soon landed on a log, his body racked with alot of pain. he was to exhausted to do anything. " Awe... looks like the whelp is a bit tired out Mushka."

" Its does seem that way Tith. To bad we have to kill him. I'm sure he would have made a good slave."

" Ya... just end his misery now and lets get back to camp." Mushka stated. Tith grabbed his axe and chuckled as he raised it to finish the small pup off but soon stopped. The Jackled blinked a couple times and soon fell over, face hitting the ground hard and stuck in his back was a bright, silver arrow with blue feathers on it. The other looked like he was losing color in his face, the flesh underneath his scagly fur turned pale. " What is this? No... this can't be real..." he said as he began to panic. Tonka stared at the panicked canine with one eye open, trying not to pass out.

Tonka soon saw a cloaked figure drop down from the trees and the Jackle fell over on himself trying to put as much distance between him and the figure. The cloaked figure soon lifted his hood up revealing a black wolf with piercing orange and holding a strange white bow with blue runes on it. " No... you aren't real... this is just an illusion!" Mushka shouted as he grabbed his own axe and charged at the wolf. With out a moments thought the wolf jumped bac and shot another other arrow into the leg of the jackle causing him to fall over in agony.

" You listen here... your kind aren't welcome in my forest. This child is in my forest so he is protected under its guardian. You all have been slaughtering for pleasure and selfishness. Now its time to give back to the forest." The wolf said softly. As Tonka started to lose consiouness, he saw the paws of the wolf glow a bright green and soon the dead jackle near him and the one in front of the wolf began to change, becoming what he thought were trees.

Tonka jumped as he awoke, breathing heavily as he didn't know where he was. He looked around and saw that he was still in the woods. He looked at his body and noticed that he was covered up and clothed and his wounds were gone. " Well its good to see that you are awake." said a soft voice which startled the small pup. He looked around to see the wolf from earlier. He moved back softly and then relaxed a bit as the realization came to him.

" Wh... who are you?" he asked softly.

" My name is Artemis young one. DO you come from that village?"

" Y.. ya... we were attacked last night, betrayed by... by..." Tonka said started to get angry. His grey fur changing to a red color. Artemis stepped back a bit as he noticed small flames starting to form around the child. " By who I thought was my father.."

" Whoa kid... calm down please. I don't need you burning down my forest. So your father did all that?" He asked softly as he looked up at the sky. It was getting dark now and the two needed to find shelter. He wasn't going to leave the pup all alone in here as it can get dangerous. " Hey, come with me." he said softly as he began to walk.

" Y.. ya..." he said calming down. " To where?" he asked as he stood up and kind of cowered behind the larger male. He realized what had happened and thought for a moment at his powers not working earlier. " Kahz was right... I do need to keep control over my emotions.."

" Kahz? Who is he and why did he tell you that?" Artemis asked as he walked, making sure that the pup was behind him. He didn't know why, but the child seemed incredibly familiar to him. Just that strange feeling.

" Kahz was our elder. I fear that he is dead as well. But he told e that cause elements manifest depending on the emotion I'm feeling. For example I will cry and it will rain. I get mad I light things on fire."

" That would explain the random weather.." Artemis said softly to himself. " Sounds like you got quite a gift."

" If you want to call it that..." Tonka said softly. " Where are we going?"

" We are heading to my home. Its getting dark soon and I couldn't just leave you out here all alone." He stated. He waited for a response from the pup but heard nothing. He looked back behind him and Tonka was still following him, though he kept his head down. Just looking at the ground. Tonka soon perked his ears up as they got to a small grove. It seemed a bit eerie to him as there was no sound. It was completely quiet. In the middle was this large tree that was much bigger than all the others. " Welcome to the forest nexus. My home." he said softly.

" Forest Nexus?" Tonka asked curiously.

" Its the very center of the forest. Quite a ways from the mountains and the plains on the other side."

" OH! The mountains... I have to get there!" Tonka said in a panic as he began to look around but couldn't see where the mountains were. Artemis turned to look at him curiously and picked him up.

" Hey calm down. You aren't going to make it there on your own. So lets just wait for the night to end then try and get you where you need to go alright?" Artemis stated. Tonka struggled as he was picked up but tired out quickly as he hasn't eaten in a while and the past events of what happened.

" Fine..." was all he could say as the wolf carried him to the tree. Artemis put his paw on the side of the tree and a green rune appeared and an opening was made. He walked inside and Tonka watched as the opening closed back up. Inside of the tree was a staircase leading up in a spiral. The sides were lit by what he thought were torches. But as he looked closer he realized that the path was lit by fireflies. Blue ones at that.

They soon came up to the top of the stairs and it was just like his own home that he used to have in the village. Except there was a table for sharpening metal, a bed, and an area filled with herbs and food. " Welcome to my home." The wolf said softly as he set the husky pup down. Tonka looked at the herbs and food and clutched his stomach as he growled and hurt.

" M.. may I please have something to eat?" he asked softly.

" Of course. Help yourself to some apples." Artemis said as he started to take his cloak off. Tonka walked over to the bowl of apples and grabbed a green one. He took a bite out of it and his cheeks puckered at the tart taste. The pup found it appealing though. " Those are my personal favorite." The wolf said softly as his cloak was set on a table. He was dressed in what looked to be a strong fabric with a few knives lining in an X shape along his chest. He set his quiver and bow down softly next to the bed.

" They are really good..." TOnka said softly. " Exactly... who are you?" he asked finally seeing the weaponry and what he figured was a kind of armor.

" As I said, my name is Artemis. A name given to me by the fey. I guard this forest and the life inside of it and in return they forest wont allow me to die." he said softly. " Artemis of the Fey." he mumbled to himself. " Now... why don't you tell me a little more about what happened?"

Tonka sighed softly and looked down. " Well, our clan leader, Athreal, came back from a nearby village. He and Kahz were supposed to be negotiating a treaty between our two villages. But Athreal returned alone. He found... Cath and I... Well... he got furious cause we were in bed together. After that the village was attacked and he helped kill everyone in the village. Cath died in my arms." He said softly as he began to cry again. " He killed my mother too... All I could do was hide... to scared to do anything. I couldn't even save my mother... As she died she told me that Athreal wasn't my real father. SHe told me to go to the mountains and find a cave and my real father should be there and to not be afraid of the darkness."

" I see, that explains why you want to go to the mountains." Artemis said softly. He rubbed his head as he tried to actively avoid the mountains as much as possible. " Did she say a name perhaps?"

" No..."

" Well then. Well we will be off tomorrow and maybe I can help you get better control over that power of yours. I don't know what all you can do, but I know that control is going to be needed right now." he said softly. He soon started to take off his armor, setting it nicely next to the bed. The wolf was only wearing a pair of pants now and he started to climb into his bed as the sun set completely. Tonka looked around and didn't really see anything he could sleep on.

He slowly walked over to the side of the bed and looked down. " Uh.. um... sir... m.. may I sleep in the bed with you?" he asked shyly.

Artemis looked at the kid and then around his home and remember that there wasn't exactly anything that he could sleep on that would be remotely comfortable. He looked back at the shivering pup and started to blush a bit, but it was hidden well underneath his black fur. " Sure. I don't see why not." he said softly. Tonka soon jumped up onto the bed and crawled over to the wolf and smiled.

" Thank you..." he said softly as curled up next to the wolf. Artemis looked a bit puzzled and let out a soft sigh as he hadn't had someone sleep next to him in ages. He soon smiled and pulled the pup closer to him and wrapped his arms around him to keep himself warm. He felt an odd sensation and tried his best to hide it. Tonka snuggled up close to him, his back pressed firmly against the wolfs chest. His foot paws lightly grazing the older males groin as he softly fell asleep.

Artemis couldn't help but to let out a soft sigh and closed his eyes. He couldn't help but to feel something strong welling up inside of him. The wolf decided to push the feelings aside as he just met the smaller male and would like to see how things go before anything else.

" Goodnight pup."

" My name is Tonka. Goodnight Arty."
