The next morning brought a much more subdued German Shepherd. Whether it was the spanking, Kaeden growing used to the way his life worked now, or perhaps a genuine change in attitude was anyone's guess, but when Ashleigh came in to wake him up, he didn't curse at the Pyrenees nor try to physical struggle against her care, either.

"How do we feel about messy diapers today, Kaeden? You think you're ready to try that for me?" It was a question that had been asked to him in one form or another for three days now, but his answer was still the same.

Kaeden hung his head, and slowly shook back and forth. He still felt so disgusting and humiliated whenever that happened, and the only solace he could find was that it had been forced on him; it wasn't a choice.

Ashleigh was clearly disappointed, perhaps having seen something in him that led her to believe he'd change his mind, but she was resolute.

"You know that means I need to give you your medicine again, right?"

The Shepherd nodded glumly. She picked him up out of the crib, and the Rottweiler stepped in, causing Kaeden to tense up, recoiling back, unconsciously seeking closer contact with his caregiver. Ashleigh gently untaped his diaper, pulling it down below the curve of his bottom, just like the last three mornings. There was no evidence of bruising - Rashid indeed hadn't taken things too far, but she had made up her mind: no more spankings. They were unpleasant for her to witness, and she felt there were far better methods to punish an unruly pup.

As she taking the foil off Kaeden's pill, however, she stopped.

"Kaeden? Are we going to need Rashid's help this morning, or can I trust you to be a good puppy?" she said, hoping to avoid spoiling her charge's relatively good behavior so far. Kaeden wasn't supposed to like Rashid, of course, that was the entire idea - but she was pretty sure his distaste for the Rottweiler had been well established now, and another unpleasant encounter with him would simply serve no purpose.

"I'll be good," he said, nodding. "I... I promise."

"That's my sweet puppy," she said, giving him a quick kiss atop his head. Kaeden couldn't help but whine as the familiar, yet still cold and slippery feeling of the suppository made its way under his tail. He wiggled against the uncomfortable pressure, but stayed atop his caregiver's lap until she had him re-diapered and re-dressed.

Once up, he started making his way to the corner, expecting to be soaped and muzzled again.

"Honey, what are you doing?"

"Don't I gotta be here until I... you know."

"Of course not, Kaeden. You were a very good boy this morning. You didn't yell or curse or try to hurt anyone with your words. Would you like to go play until you have an accident?" she asked, choosing her words carefully to avoid embarrassing him.

Kaeden blushed slightly, pulling his ears back, but quickly recovered. "Actually... I'm kind of hungry," he said.

The Pyrenees smiled at him. "I thought you might be. Let me go warm up a bottle for you. Stay here and be good, okay? Promise?"

"I promise."

Kaeden initially intended to obey - he didn't have a good idea of the layout of the house, and didn't think he could find a way to escape in time to bolt. Judging by the voices he heard in the distance, Rashid was in the kitchen talking with Ashleigh, so he could avoid the other male, but he wasn't sure right now was the best time to try. He'd likely only get one attempt before they'd keep him locked up again, and another chance might be months in the coming.

However, his mind began to wander as Ashleigh took a lot longer than she should have. He still heard the voices in the kitchen, and so he walked over to the door of his nursery, pulling it open and poking his head into the hall. He looked both ways, and - despite feeling as though he was trespassing - stepped into the hall.

It seemed a fairly normal home. Without looking in any of the rooms, nobody would even know the entire home was built to care for large "puppies." He walked down a door, one that had been shut every time he'd been carried past it, and peeked inside. Inside was a bedroom. He thought it might be his caregiver's - he recognized some of her clothing laying on the bed. But better yet, on her bedstand was a phone! He rushed over, and immediately dialed the emergency number. What answered was a business-like female voice, but it was certainly_not_emergency services. They even said so, as soon as they answered.

"Chainbreakers Incorporated, how can we help you today Ashleigh? Giving a status update?"

Kaeden's mind froze, unable to understand what had just happened. Why didn't 9-1-1 work? That worked everywhere, it always did. It was drilled into the minds of little pups as soon as they were old enough to walk and talk. Get the police if you need help. And Kaeden was sure he needed help, he'd been kidnapped and forced to live as a baby!

"Uh... huh?" he said, dumbly. "Nine one one?"

The operator on the other end took a moment to respond as well, evidently just as surprised as Kaeden was - though it took her much less long to recover.

"Kaeden, you need to get off this line. Go find Ashleigh, now," the voice said, ending with a click. Kaeden dropped the phone, utterly confused as to what had happened. Why did the voice know who the phone belonged to? And even more confusing, how did they know_he_was calling? What was going on?

He slowly backed his way out of the bedroom - only to bump into a very upset Great Pyrenees. The shock of the unexpected encounter, combined with the melting glycerin from the suppository, caused him to suddenly lose control of his bowels. The Shepherd whined, but he was more concerned about Ashleigh.

"Kaeden, I thought I could trust you," she said, simply. The Shepherd turned around and flattened his ears, looking up with remorse. He wasn't sure why he felt so bad... but he didn't like disappointing Ashleigh. Even if she was part of all this, she was still the only, well,_mostly_good part of it.

"I was hoping you were ready to have a little freedom. You were such a good little puppy this morning, I thought I'd reward you and not lock you back up in your crib. I'm very disappointed that you betrayed my trust."

"I'm sorry... " Kaeden whimpered.

"Ever a surprise..." Ashleigh sighed, looking up at the ceiling. She looked back down sternly at her charge before continuing. "You don't seem to show it, pup. Every time I give you an inch, you use that freedom to misbehave."

"How did you know?"

"Mommies know everything. I know I may not be your mother, but I'm raising you as my own pup, and it's my responsibility to know when my puppy is being bad."

Kaeden let out a nervous laugh. "I know you treat me like I'm one, b-but... come on, I know better than that."

Ashleigh finally smiled, a sign Kaeden took to heart, and he finally relaxed his muscles, shifting around uncomfortably due to the contents of his diaper.

"Cell phone. I received a text concerning a puppy using one of my phones without permission."

Kaeden slumped his shoulders. "I... I just... you were taking so long, and... ?"

"And what? You thought you'd use that as an excuse to leave your nursery? And then try to call the police?"

"N-no, it's not like that, honest! It just... happened, I wasn't, like, planning any of it!"

"Be that as it may, you still made some bad choices, and bad choices have consequences. Before we get to that, though, I think somebody needs a clean diaper."

Kaeden blushed, but allowed himself to be picked up and carried back to his nursery to be changed. Ashleigh had him cleaned up in no time, leaving him in a fresh diaper and another dinosaur t-shirt.

"I used to really like dinosaurs as a kid," he said, looking down at the velociraptor. My bedroom had all these cool designs and stuff," he said, trying to avoid the inevitable conversation about his punishment."

Ashleigh smiled, although sadly, knowing Kaeden was trying to delay the inevitable. "Then I hope you like them again, now, for your second childhood. Now, I said I'd punish you. I won't lie to you Kaeden, I'm very upset with you right now."

The Shepherd whimpered and lowered his eyes, looking away from Ashleigh as he laid on his changing table.

"I... " he stammered, not sure what to say. "I don't understand why, b-but... I don't like making you mad at me. I didn't care on the first couple days, but, now... and I... I want to know what is going on here and why you are doing this to me. What is Chainbreakers?" he asked, cocking his head to the side.

"That's not something I can answer right now, Kaeden - and you need to stop changing the subject. I know this is unpleasant, but we need to discuss how you are going to be punished for this. I have never had a charge behave this poorly before."

"You've had others like me?"

Ashleigh mentally berated herself for the slip. That wasn't really something he should have known yet, going by program guidelines, but she didn't need to explain to him anything further.

"Yes, but I've already said too much. Right now I need you to worry about behaving. You really hurt me by betraying my trust today. I don't know if you understand how that feels to a person. Yesterday I told you I wasn't going to let you be spanked anymore... and I'm not, at least not by anyone else. This is going to hurt me much more than it will you, pup."

"B-but... but you promised!" Kaeden said, panicking, as he was picked up and placed over Ashleigh's lap. "Kaeden... this does not excuse me breaking my promise, but I want you to learn how I feel when you consistently break your promises to me. It hurts me. Now, do you understand why I have to break_my_promise?"

Kaeden nodded. He was a smart dog, and her explanation made sense - he had broken so many promises to her since he'd gotten here. He would have to be very full of himself to judge her for breaking just one promise, and only then as a lesson at that.

The Shepherd began sniffling as he felt the all-too-familiar feeling of his diaper sliding down his rump. He even started crying, before Ashleigh had done anything - hearing the hurt in her voice had been the worst part. He lurched forward as the first spank landed, still sore from Rashid's spanking the day before. A second strike landed on his other cheek. He braced himself for more, but instead, he felt his diaper being pulled back up and re-taped over his tail. Confused, he wiped away his tears and turned his head to look up at his caregiver.

"Have you learned your lesson, pup?"

Kaeden nodded. He definitely had.

"But... you only spanked me twice?" he said, confused.

"So I did. But you just told me you learned your lesson, did you not?"

Kaeden nodded.

"You're learning you were wrong, then. So, you understand what I feel like when you betray my trust?"

Kaeden nodded again, although this time he looked down and sniffled.

"Then two spanks is all you need, pup."

Kaeden was left in his crib after that, while Ashleigh attended to other things. He spent most of the rest of the day - save for lunch and dinner, when he was given another bottle of formula, contemplating the day's events. Initially he'd felt hurt by Ashleigh's betrayal, and didn't want anything more to do with her, but their conversation kept repeating in his head. Ashleigh hadn't really betrayed him, he had to admit - she'd explained everything to him, and made sure he understood why he was getting a spanking from her. And she hadn't hurt him, either... and even after he had broken her trust several times, she still believed him when he'd truthfully told him he'd learned his lesson.

"What did I do to deserve that?" he wondered aloud. Kaeden decided he would try to trust her. As messed up as this whole situation was, and as much as he'd rather not be their captive 'puppy,' something about Ashleigh made him believe there actually was something wrong with him. She didn't seem crazy, which meant there must at least be some truth behind what motivated her to treat him this way.

Bedtime came all too soon, as usual, but this time, Kaeden slipped into a peaceful sleep. Maybe he didn't want to be here... but his curiosity meant he didn't want to leave, either. At least not just yet.
