#2 of Silverback

Life only gets more interesting in the hospital. Let me know how the dialogue goes with this new level I added.

So there I was, alone in a room with a feline and my step-mom. I couldn't decide which was worse. I just hung my head down and prepared for whatever came my way.

My step-mom started, "Honey, bring your head up and look at me for a moment."

Oh no, here we go. She was going to tear into me if I looked up. I couldn't do it, not here, not when so much was happening and I still didn't understand any of it. Getting chewed out by her was the last thing I needed.

As I hesitated, Dr. Spot spoke, "Mrs. Silverback"

"Oh, Dr. that is not my name. That is Jazcal's name, but mine is Crystal Boarderston," snapped my step-mom.

"My apologies, Ms. Boarderston, but I think it would be best if we left Jazcal to rest some more. I can show and explain to you some of the medications he will be one if you like," replied Dr. Spot with a fake smile.

With a deep sigh, my step-mom rose to her feet and followed the doctor out the door assuring me, "We will talk later."

I just followed them with my gaze as they left the room and shut the door. I sat there staring at the door dumbfounded at what just happened. Did that feline just help me? I cleared that thought from my head and laid down. Maybe the doctor is right and all I need is some more rest, I thought to myself. I laid my head back on the pillow and closed my eyes, but sleep was out of the question with so much floating around in my head. First waking up in the hospital, then talking ferals, and now a feline helping a canine? Too many unanswered question remained.

Then I heard the door open and my eyes with it. I looked over and there standing in the doorway was Dr. Spot and Snow. They entered and Snow came up to the bed and gave me a pat on the chest.

"Good to see you are alive. I thought you weren't going to make it for a second," said Snow with a look of relief on his face.

"He had a concussion and it was a good thing that that horse brought him in so quickly," said Dr. Spot as he turned to the table near the washbasin and opened a container.

Snow leaned in and whispered, "I cannot believe that a feline is helping a canine. I don't trust him."

Dr. Spot turned around with a cup of water in one hand and something in the other, and Snow stood up straight. "You two need to stop that "canine, feline" bullshit. Times are changing and even though you grew up with the tail end of the discrimination, the younger generation and lawmakers are changing things already. You two had best start changing too if you want to remain in this hospital," stated Dr. Spot with a serious tone to match his face. "Now take this Jazcal, it will help with the pain."

He handed me a pill and the cup. I hesitated but the look on his face indicated that this was not an option. I popped the pill in my mouth and downed it with the water. I cringed, half expecting to die immediately but nothing happened. Dr. Spot took my temperature and heart rate then left the room warning us not to be too loud or he would have us both removed.

As the door clicked shut, Snow pulled the chair up next to the bed and sat in it.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Fine, but my head hurts and now my forearms are beginning to hurt too and my lower back," I replied with a slight wince. "What happened anyways?"

"You mean you don't remember?" Snow said with a look of disbelief.

"No, after we stepped off of the sidewalk it is all black. I don't remember any of it," I replied.

"Wow that is a shame man. Okay then here it is. After we got off the sidewalk and started to cross the street uh... Oh yes, we got halfway across and you jumped out in front of me a ways looking over to the left. You were stretching as far as you could. You then turned towards me and pointed with your tail wagging furiously. You shouted "look over there, an auto..." You were cut off when a cyclist tried to stop from hitting you with his bike. But he fell over his bike and into you, knocking you onto the cobblestone road. You tried to catch yourself but you were too late and you hit your head pretty good on the cobblestone. You laid there in a crumpled heap, not breathing or moving. A horse drawn cart with a burly looking equine ran over and scooped you up into his cart and told me he was talking you to the hospital immediately. I would have come too but I had to describe what had happened to the cops, get your step-mom and then to the doctor. I was so worried about you man. You scared me."

He finished with a look that I had only seen him use once before on the principal in order to avoid getting paddled in middle school. It was that look a feral dog gives its master when it is looking for affection. His big, stunning, ice blue eyes and the long face, perfectly swept back fur that looked velvety soft to the touch. My heart melted right there. But wait. That couldn't be right. This was another guy I was talking about my best friend. I couldn't have seen that. I blinked and sure enough the same expression met my eyes as they opened. He was the most beautiful anthro I had ever seen. So rugged and handsome, yet he was still smooth and soft.

"Is everything okay man?" he asked with a questioning look.

I blinked and shook my head slightly. "Ya, wait... you mean that I saw my first automobile and I don't even remember it!" I said with astonishment.

"That is the way it seems, pretty funny too now that I think about it. You were looking really hard all that walk home too and now you don't even remember the one you saw." He said with a grin.

I smiled, that was Snow always making me smile and joking with me. That was when I heard a meow come from the window. We both looked over and there was a black cat with a white triangle on its chest.

"Oh look another cat," said Snow. "Get out of here. Go!" He shooed it.

"You are a very rude dog, you husky. You do know who you are addressing right?" hissed the cat, in a higher pitched voice, with a disgusted look on its face. "I knew that the Interpreter couldn't be a dog in a world like this," the cat got up and turned to jump out.

"Wait!" I barked.

The cat's ears perked up to this and it turned with an inquisitive look, "Which one of you just said that with a perfect canine accent?"

"I did," I whimpered a little. I was very nervous as to what this all meant.

"Then I was wrong, the Interpreter is a canine. My apologies but I hope you understand my reaction to your companion's remarks towards me," the cat made a bowing motion.

"Wait a moment!" said Snow with an astonished look on his face. "What is going on here? Why do you sound like a feral dog? And why is the cat bowing?" Snow began to freak out, grabbing a fistful of his head fur.

"Calm down," I whimpered and made a downward motion with my hands. "Damn, I really need to work on this talking thing!" I growled to myself.

"It will come in time and with practice and training," The cat quickly put in before I tried to calm Snow down again.

"Calm down man. Everything is fine," I said with some difficulty. How can it be so hard to just talk normally?

"Sure, sure. Just give me some answers please, in normal speaking please!" Snow begged with a worried look on his face. Man this hurt me to see him like this.

"I will try," I assured him. "But I don't know either, I mean I can talk to ferals, but that is all I know for sure other than this cat knows for sure what is going on."

We both looked at the cat and it began to meow, "You see, the Gods once said that the animal kingdom will be reunited and that those who chose to walk on two legs will relies who they really are and begin to understand. They said that the anthros would learn from their fellow animals and help to preserve what is left in order to benefit the kingdom as a whole. They said that one anthro would be reminded of the true language of the animals and rise up to unite the rest of his kind and rebuild the split kingdom into an even stronger one. He would be the one to interpret what is said between the two worlds, thus allowing communication to happen once again. I am one of the God's searchers who have scoured the land looking for the Interpreter. I am also supposed to help train you in the art of speaking and understanding the true animal way. I am also supposed to be your guardian against the evil one who seeks to destroy you and end the animal kingdom is an inferno which it itself creates."

As the cat finished, I sat there stunned and in disbelief. It was hardly the story I would normally believe, but come one, I was talking to a feral cat. Nothing that had happened so far was normal. So I resided to being open minded and believing the cat, even if it was a cat. But the bewilderment faded as it hacked up a hairball and asked for some water.

"That is gross," commented Snow. "But what did it say?"

"If you get some water for this cat, then I will tell you," I replied.

I told him the story as best as I could with several instances where I began speaking in feral again, but I managed. Snow sat there very silent and very attentive. When I finished, I glanced at the cat who gave me an assuring nod.

"Wow, what a story. You had me going too." Snow began to laugh hysterically. As he wiped the tears from his eyes, he noticed that I was dead serious. "Wait, you mean, you weren't faking? Don't mess with me like this, tell me the truth!" he demanded.

"I already have" I replied.

"No, this is so not real. If it is, then you have to prove it to me," he said.

"Was that not enough?" I asked.

"No, you could have made that all up and the cat could have just meowed from the attention we gave it," he said as he got up and walked to the window with a frustrated look on his face. I felt a little ashamed that he was being drug into this confusion. "Tell me what color the flowers in the garden are without getting up. The doctor said that you haven't seen anything till now so you shouldn't know unless the cat tells you."

"Your friend is rather thick-headed," meowed the cat softly.

"Sometimes," I whimpered through a slight grin.

"Enough! What color are they?" interrupted Snow.

"They are white with blue specks," meowed the cat.

"White with some blue ones," I told Snow with some difficulty. It was difficult switching back and forth between the languages so quickly.

"Good guess, now where is the tree?" asked Snow.

"In the middle of the garden with paths branching out from it in four perpendicular directions," meowed the cat impatiently.

"In the middle of the garden," I said.

With a sigh, Snow stepped back from the window with a perplexed look on his face. He walked back to the chair and placed his chin on his hands that were propped up on his legs. There was a long pause as he was thinking about what had happened.

"I guess... I guess it is true," he said finally after the long pause, lifting his chin off of his hands and starring deep into my eyes as if he were looking for the slightest sign of a lie.

"I know it is unbelievable, but thank you for believing me. I promise I am not lying to you." I said, offering a handshake, which he accepted with some reluctance. It felt good to knowing that Snow trusted me. "Can you tell us more?" I asked the cat.

"That is enough for today," It yawned. "I need a nap anyways and so do you it looks. Do not worry though, I will be back to fulfill my duty to the Gods and I will be back to guide you. So long," It meowed as it turned and jumped out the window.
