Chapter 1
The New Guy
It's 6:35 am. It's a cool morning in the city of Medina. Xander leaves his home heading for another day on the job. Xander is a male Umbreon with red rings. He stands 5'-11" with a medium muscle build. He likes to keep the fur on his head ruffled. It looks as if he has been electrocuted. Some people say that he looks to cool to drive a truck. It does not bother him. Xander likes driving 18 wheelers. Putting on his sunglasses, Xander locks the door to his house and enters his hunter green station wagon. Pulls out of the drive way and speeds off to work.
Xander pulls into the parking lot of Apex Shipping Company. He cruises around the parking lot looking for a parking space. Xander knows that parking is a pain in the butt here, but he deals with. He find a parking space and pulls in. Xander exits his car and activates the alarm system. He heads over to building A to sign in and get his paper work.
Among enter the building, Xander removes his sunglasses and signs in. He goes to the employee bulletin board to check for any news before getting his paper work and the keys to his truck. There seems to be nothing new on the board. He heads over the where mailboxes are for the drivers. He gets his paper work and the kays to his truck. But before he can exit the door the parking lot, his supervisor Pete stops him. Xander wonder what's going on.
"Xander, wait a minute. I have something to tell you." Pete said.
"OK. What is it?" Xander said.
"From this day forward you will have someone working with you." Pete said. "I know it's last minute but we had to place this guy somewhere. He tested him. He passed all of the driving test first time around. This guy is good."
"So now I'm not the only one who has done it." Xander said.
"His name is Ether. I feel that you two will make a great team." Pete said. "He has been fully trained and ready to go. We was able to teach him everything he need to know about how we operate. All we need to see is how he performs out there with you and the rest of you guys. Just wait here and I will go get him." Pete goes into his office.
Xander leans up against the wall as he waits for Pete to bring out his driving partner. He flips through his paper work checking to see where they are going. He finds out that he is going to the city of Bellwood. He will be taking one trailer. It contains stryofoam plates and cups. At that moment Pete comes back with Ether. Ether is a male Umbreon with gold rings. He stands around 5'-9" with a lean muscle build. Xander is speechless.
"This is Ether." Pete said.
"Good to meet you." Xander said shaking hands with Ether.
"Nice meet you." Ether said.
"Well, I got work to do." Pete said. "Xander you know what I expect from you." Pete walks back to his office.
"Let's get going." Xander said. Xander and Ether leave building A and go out to where the trucks are parked.
Outside Xander and Ether walk over to their truck. The truck they are using is silver with black trim. When they get up close to the truck, Ether is quite suprised to see that this is the truck they will be using.
"This is our truck!" Ether exclaims.
"This is it." Xander said. "This is a 2004 model. I have been using it since they first got it new last year. I like it. It has a bed and a satellite TV in it."
"It has one bed?!?" Ether asked.
"It a bunk bed." Xander said. "I sleep on the bottom bunk during long trip. I have never even touched the top bunk."
"Oh, ok." Ether said. He still uneasy about sleeping on the top bunk. He seems to not trust Xander.
"Well, any we got some to pull." Xander said. "Let's get to work." Xander and Ether get in the truck. Xander enter the driver side and Ether gets in on the passenger side. Xander starts the truck. He looks over his paper work.
"Our trailer is in parking spot T-12" Xander said. Xander put the truck in gear and looks for his trailer.
Xander cruises around the parking lot loooking for spot T-12. He finds the trailer and couples it to the back of the truck. Xander gets out of the cab to connect the electric and air lines to the trailer. Xander then pulls the trailer foward abit. Xander then gets out of the cab again. He checks the trailer's contents to make sure it has the right cargo.
"Everything is OK. This is the right stuff." Xander said. He exits the trailer and and gets back in the cab.
"Why did you get leave again." Ether asked. "
"I was checking the trailer to make sure it had the right contents." Xander said. "It's a safety measure."
"OK Where are we going?" Ether asked.
"We are going to Bellwood." Xander said.
"Bellwood. I have friends there." Ether said.
"Our stop is Autec." Xander said. "A food service wholesaler. We deliever to them all the time."
"I see." Ether said.
Xander pulls out of the parking lot and heads for highway 13. As he makes his way to highway 13, Xander drives the tractor-trailer smoothly. The low hum of the huge disel engine in the only thing that can be heard. Ether looks over the paper work for this run.
"Pete said that Apex ships everything from food items to gravel. So we could be shipping gravel tomorrow?"
"It's true." Xander said. "On top of that we may have to pull two trailers. That happens often. But you get paid more for pulling two. Pete does not tell anybody that but I will tell you.
Xander stops at a red light. Suddenly a red car speeds through the intersection. It is being followed by a police car. Xander does not say anything. Ether looks at Xander. The light turns green. Xander takes off. Xander looks at looks at Ether briefly and turns his attention back to the road. Xander remains silent. Ether can see that something is bothering Xander.
"Xander is something wrong?" Ether asked.
Xander makes the right hand turn on highway 13 towards Bellwood. He remains silent until he gets the truck up to legal spees 55 mph or 90 km/h.
"It's that police car." Xander said. "I know that unit number."
"What about it?" Ether asked.
"My girlfriend was driving that cop car." Xander said.
"You say it was if it's a bad thing." Ether said. "I would like to have a girlfriend who is a cop. I don't see anything wrong with it."
"........." Xander said. Xander does not say anything.
Ether shrugs his shoulders and tries to relax. They pass a sign that says 35 miles or 56 kilometers to Bellwood. Xander continues to drive. He then turns on the AM/FM radio. Some upbeat Jazz plays. Xander and Ether continue on their way to Bellwood.
Now while giving the driver of that red car a big speeding ticket, Xander's girlfriend named Marie knows that she has just seen her boyfriend. She plans to wait for the truck to come back to town. She is going to suprise hims he gets back into town. She hands the driver of the car his ticket. She goes back to the police cruiser knowing what she plans to do to her soon to be husband.
