#8 of Dustin & Kai

Here it finally is, chapter 8. It won't be what anyone (except those who know us) expected, but it's the sad, sad truth. Although the exact story isn't the same, the situation was, and the final night together will be as real as I can remember it happening. Here goes... <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> "Disaster! This cannot be happening..." Dusty whimpered out softly, a dull, mind-numbing pain in his head, buried within his paws. His dad was being transferred back to the United States for his job, and taking the family back with him. Dusty's eyes teared up but he fought the urge to cry, trying to be strong. He regretted the thought of having to tell his mate and best friend, Kai, that after being together, he'd be leaving him once again. His body convulsed as he could imagine the reaction his soul-mate would have. --- Dusty spent the night at Kai's house that Saturday evening, they watched movies, curling up together on Kai's bed, snuggling close. He had yet to tell Kai. He didn't want to tell him and ruin the whole evening. Soon it had become too late to ask Kai's mum to take him home, so he just decided to stay over and go home in the morning. Kai yawned and leaned over, nuzzling Dusty's cheek and murred. "Bedtime, wuffie." He grinned and gave the other wolf a kiss to the cheek, as they curled up. Neither could sleep, Dusty for the obvious, and Kai because he wasn't tired. They turned on the tv, and watched silently. Dusty turned over to Kai and began to scritch his neck lightly, from his shoulders up to his ears. Fingertips rubbing through the soft fur, tickling it, teasing it. He wasn't sure how long it had been, but when Dusty looked back over at Kai, the wolf was passed out hard. Dusty smiled and curled up against his love, and snuggled warmly to sleep. He awoke to see a pair of eyes staring back into his, and murred, Kai's paw reaching across to stroke Dusty's cheek. He smiled at the wolf and yawned, stretching lightly. Kai shuffled out of bed and turned on his computer, starting up his game, and Dusty lay there under the sheets, his mind swarming with thoughts of how to talk to Kai about it. Over an hour passed, he argued with himself how to tell him. It was finally time... "Kai..." Dusty groaned out softly, his head hanging low, eyes barely gazing upon the other wolf, afraid of looking at him. "W.what would you think if I told you.. I am going home? Back to the U.s...." He gulped softly, clamoring up quickly, his lips and muzzle suddenly dry. Kai worked his game for a few more minutes, gears turning in his head, not really sure how to respond. "Hun... you hafta do what you think is best." That would be the only response he got from his mate. Dusty cried on the inside, his heart beating rapidly as he knew his mate's heart was ripped in two. As Dusty got up, he rubbed his eyes, still holding back his emotions though he was torn apart. He grabbed his things, and gave Kai a nuzzle to the side of his cheek. Both wolves descended into town to return their movies, and to wait at the bus stop for the bus to Dusty's house. "I'll give you a call sometime in the next few days..." Dusty chanted out, and mouthed the words "I love you as the bus took off, blowing a kiss to Kai standing in front of the station. The bus trip back was long and hard for Dusty, his mind swarming with thoughts for his beloved wolf. He reached his house and walked in, going for his bedroom and collapsing on his bed. --- The next few days went slowly for both wolves, Kai off at school and Dusty packing his belongings, his mind full of thoughts of his mate. He rang up Kai later on, and they decided to all go out to dinner on his last night in the country. That day approached fast, and Dusty was eager to see his Kai once more, unfortunately, for the last time. After hopping off the bus, he ascended the hill to Kai's house and met the wolf, and watched movies until dinner time. Kai's mum drove them down to the pub and they ate a wonderful meal, full of good talk and memories, Dusty answering all he knew about the United States, and even Kansas where he was from and moving back to. After an excellent meal, they all walked down to the beach, about 100 yards away, where Kai's folks walked ahead. Dusty ran out to touch the ocean, which surprisingly was the first time he'd ever done it, not just in New Zealand but anywhere. He walked back to Kai and grinned, and got a chuckle out of Kai. As the two tall wolves walked along the beach in the twilight, neither said a word. Kai suddenly turned, embracing Dusty completely, squeezing him tight. Fur against fur, and though Dusty's eyes were open, he didn't see anything. He felt nothing but Kai against him, smelling his fur, and hearing the waves crashing on the shore. It was all so beautiful, and so right. But the time had passed too quickly, soon they walked back to the car and drove to Kai's house. Kai's mum started up her car, and waited for Dustin to get his belongings. The wolf hugged Kai one last time, gave him one last nuzzle. Kai whispered in his ear "I forgive you," referring to Dusty's apology about leaving. Dustin hopped into the car, and they drove off, the last time he'd see Kai in person, feel him, smell his fur and scent... --- It was a long shuttle ride to the airport, making Dustin nautious. It was bad enough to be leaving the country but the driver threw them around in the van like a ship in a choppy sea. After getting to the airport, and regaining his bearings, the wolf finally made it to the luggage check-in. The long wait for the plane seemed to drone on, before they finally started boarding. As the plane began its ascent into the air, Dusty put on his headphones, started up his mp3 player, and tried not to think about leaving behind the best thing that had ever happened to him. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Okay everybody, that's the final chapter. I know it sounds horrible, and sad, but for the most part that's what happened. The beach scene I still hold as my most cherished memory of my entire life. I still remember almost every day like it was yesterday. I do have good news however, Kai and I are still great friends, we still chat a lot. He's doing well as am I, both trying to get on with our lives. The real reason I left was the college messing up on my funding, giving me three days to find a loan to pay for my courses. I dreaded having to tell Kai I couldn't make it. But here I am, five months later. And Kai is hoping to come visit me this time somewhere after New Years. Please, send me an email at [email protected] if you'd like to say anything. I appreciate any comments and thoughts. And thanks to all of our readers, it's been a wonderful story, and we loved sharing it with you all. Love ya! ~Dusty
