#6 of Price of Life

The trio had settled down to dinner. Above the steaming bowls of pasta and bread, the three began to talk about their day. Although both proved largely uneventful, it made for good conversation. Dante began, "Selene thanks for helping me out with the errands today."

The white wolfess was very happy to be thanked for her service. "You're quite welcome, Dante. I had fun being a normal person for a day."

Raksha jokingly interrupted, "Normal? You think that being around Dante is normal? He's stranger than a three-dollar bill!"

Both of the females laughed, but Dante remained silent. "Well, in that case, why do you insist on living with me, Raksha?"

Raksha's little joke had turned into a battle of wits. The vixen exclaimed, "Because I pity you! You can't do anything without my help. Admit it."

"I'm not a pup, Raksha."

"You are too!"

"Am not!"

"Are too!"

Selene giggled wildly, enjoying the fake argument that her hosts were having among themselves. When they heard her laugh, they both turned from their argument to see the source of the laughter.

"You've got a great laugh, sweetheart," Dante said admiringly. "I haven't heard someone laugh like that since my childhood."

Selene blushed. It was a bizarre compliment, but she took it nevertheless. "Thank you. Might I ask what you're childhood was like, Dante?"

"Ah! Now that's a story."

"Go on, tell it!"

"Are you sure? It might take awhile."

"Tell it anyways!"

"Alright, alright, settle down," Dante said, trying his best to keep up with the wolfess' excitement. "When I was young, I grew up in the lap of luxury. My parents were both politicians, so I naturally had a great education and a moral upbringing. I studied art when I was a kid, my father wanted me to have a good hobby, so I played the piano, wrote poetry, sketched a little bit. He was a great man; he loved trying to capture beauty in some form of art.

"My mother taught me how to cook and such, so I would be able to support myself throughout university and later on in my life. She taught me how to be a gentleman and other such things."

"Come to think of it, my parents are really the reason that you're here, Selene." Dante said, delaying his tale for a moment.

Selene, with a puzzled look on her face, asked, "What do you mean by that?"

Dante continued, "Well, my parents were both firmly opposed slavery and tried to repeal it throughout their political careers. Naturally, I felt the same way as they did. My father always told me to do the right thing, no matter what the cost, so I made up my mind that I wanted to rescue slaves and help end slavery. That decision, eventually led my rescuing you. Hopefully, together, we can help rescue even more."

Selene remained silent, but her eyes grew in excitement. "You mean that you plan on...?"

Dante finished her sentence, "Rescuing more slaves? Yes, I do. It was the wish of my parents. I've taken it upon myself to continue their endeavor, whatever the cost."

The wolfess exclaimed, "Where are your parents now?"

Dante cleared his throat and blatantly said, "They're dead. They were shot during a slavery protest. They were trying to raise support for the emancipation bill that was being put in front of the senate for debate. A radical shot them to make sure that support for the bill fell."

The wolfess instantly felt terrible. She was probing into matters that were none of her concern. She gave her apology, "I'm so sorry. I didn't know."

Dante only looked at her and smiled. He wasn't angry or upset by the mention of his late parents. He gave the wolfess a reassuring gesture by placing his paw on top of hers. "Selene, there's no need for you to be sorry. They both knew the risks and they chose to go along with their plans regardless. It's my job to continue their work. Hey, all this talk about the past is ruining dinner; let's try to enjoy ourselves, okay?"

The wolfess nodded. Her appetite, however, was long gone. She didn't know that her rescue had been so premeditated. Dante was only becoming more and more of a hero to her. He had already freed her from a life of servitude and oppression, given her a home, clothing, food and friendship. When it seemed as if the giving could go on no longer, it did. Selene, eternally grateful, made a silent promise to herself to help Dante in his mission. She had gained her freedom by his hands, now it was time to pay her debt.

When dinner was over, Dante told Selene that she was more than welcome to use anything around the house like the television or the billiards table. "This house is as much as mine as it is yours," he said in his compassionate voice. "Raksha's a pool shark, so she'll be tickled pink to have an apprentice to take under her wing."

Selene asked, fairly disappointed, "Won't you play with us?"

Dante, stroking a lock of white hair off his face, "I'm sorry, sweetie, I've got some work to do. I'll be free tomorrow, so we'll go do something then. Right now, I really need to get some stuff done, before it piles up on me. You two have fun, okay?"

The black wolf walked away, up the stairs and into his room. Selene, although not completely alone, felt very unhappy. She had come to relate Dante's face with joy. The wolfess tried to calm herself. It wasn't like he had disappeared, never to be seen again. He was just upstairs, just seconds away.

"So," a voice called out to the conflicted wolfess, "wanna play a game?"

The wolfess turned around to see the wily vixen staring at her. "What kind of game, Ms. Raksha?" The wolfess was slightly worried. The tone the vixen used made it impossible to tell if she was being literal or otherwise.

From behind her back, the vixen relinquished a cue stick in one hand, and in the other, the cue ball. "Billiards, of course!"

Relieved that the vixen was only being friendly, Selene nodded her head enthusiastically. "Sure, I'll play. But, you're going to have to teach me how. I've never played this game before."

The vixen's cunning smile answered the request, "Sure, dear, come here, I'll show you how." The table had already been assembled. A triad of multicolored spheres rested on the emerald green felt. Raksha placed the cue ball on table delicately, and then holstered the cue stick to her hand, into the gap between her thumb and index finger. She grabbed the wide end with her other hand, looked at Selene with a devious smile, and said, "Watch this, darling'."

In one fluid motion, Raksha thrust the cue forward, making the tip strike the cue ball with stunning force. Like a bullet from a gun, the ball sped forward, and clouted the cluster of spheres with equal devastation. As if they were mice fleeing a preying cat, the spheres darted in every direction. One, a blue stripped one, raced into a corner and fell into a pocket.

"There," Raksha pointed with the cue stick, "is the point of the game. Make all of your spheres enter the pockets." She pointed to a mysterious, solid, black sphere and said, "This is the last one to be hit in. Whoever gets there first and successfully puts it in a pocket, wins."

Selene pursed her lip slightly but then admitted, "Alright, I think I understand."

"Then let's see what you've got," chimed the vixen, handing the wolfess a cue stick. Selene took hold of the instrument and tried to take a stance similar to that of Raksha's when she performed the break. Naturally, the amateur wolfess got it wrong.

"Let me help you, dear," said the vixen sultrily. She stood behind Selene and grabbed a hold of her right arm. Gently, she guided it to its proper position. She did not let go, however. "We'll make this shot together, okay?"

The wolfess nodded, but nervously. She wasn't used to be this close to another female. But Selene was fairly confident that she had just merely misinterpreted Raksha's action. "She's just trying to help is all," the wolfess concluded silently.

With the help of the vixen, Selene's arms moved in perfect formation. The cue stick collided with the ball, sending it rocketing into a second, which quickly disappeared into a pocket.

"Well done," Raksha congratulated.

"Yeah, but you helped," Selene said humbly.

Raksha walked around the table for her next shot. Before taking it, however, Raksha began to break into conversation.

"So, Selene, do you like it here?"

The wolfess thought that the answer to the question was fairly obvious, but she answered out of politeness. "Sure I do! I love being able to sleep in a real bed and eat wholesome food. I enjoy spending time with you and Dante; you're the first real friends I've ever had. I just feel like I'm over staying my welcome."

"Nonsense. You live here now, remember?"

The wolfess could not believe her ears. Raksha had never told her such a thing, neither had Dante. She still thought that she was just a guest. A temporary resident. Confused, Selene replied to the question with one of her own, "I do?"

The vixen answered without looking at the wolfess, she was far too more concerned with aligning her shot. "Yes, Dante and I decided this morning that you're going to make a fine addition to our funky little bunch. You don't have to feel like you're abusing our hospitality. You belong here."

Selene thought that her heart would burst right that second. "How can I repay you?" Tears were welling up in her eyes. Never before had she felt so cared for, so welcomed by another.

The tears were put to a stop, however, when Raksha answered Selene's question. "All you have to do is answer me but one thing."

"And that is?"

"Do you love Dante?"

Selene froze. The question had been asked so point blank, so blatantly, that it made her mind swim with uneasiness. Selene knew that the answer to the question was simple: Absolutely. However, the matter was so internal, so personal, that her heart shook with fear when it had become disclosed.

"Well, yeah, I do," Selene said shakily. "I mean, he has given me so much. He's shown me so much affection, that it's hard to not feel the attraction. He's the first man I've ever met who has actually cared about me this much. So yeah, I love him. But, what makes you ask?"

The vixen finally looked up from the table and stared at Selene. Raksha's cunning smile was showing again. The vixen answered with a provocative tone, "Because I heard you moaning last night."

Again, Selene was frozen. Blood rushed to her face, bringing a blush to her skin, visible underneath her snow white fur. Had she really been that loud while she had manipulated herself? Did Dante hear her? Selene's embarrassment felt complete.

Raksha giggled, walked over and placed a paw on Selene's shoulder. "There, there, sweetie. There's no need to feel embarrassed. Last night your body started belonging to you, so it's totally up to you what you do with it. Hell, even I play with myself once in awhile. Pawing off is a great way to relieve some stress. And trust me, honey, the last thing you need right now is stress."

Selene felt a little less embarrassed, but a little more shocked to know that one of her hosts was practiced at the art of sex. "Was I really that loud?"

Raksha cracked another foxy grin. "Honey, you sounded as happy as a kid in a candy factory."

"Did Dante hear? I would hate for him to look on me as just a sex-starved animal."

Raksha was quick to reassure her, "No, he's got a sound-dampener in the wall the surrounds his room. It helps him concentrate on his work. No moan or squeal, no matter how loud, could ever get through that thing. Besides, even if he did hear you, odds are he'd be more turned on than disgusted. He's a male, after all. "

Relief flowed through Selene like a wave of warm water. She was glad to know that her little act of self-pleasure had not been detrimental to either of her housemates' opinions of her.

"Well, I just starting thinking about him, and before I knew it I was imagining him there in the room with me. I really didn't know how to stop myself." Selene was unaware that she was vividly describing her little fantasy to Raksha. Sex seemed like such a taboo topic in the civilian world, but her slave-like habits seemed to be dying hard.

The vixen chuckled. "Hon, you've got quite the imagination." Raksha, in an awkward show of affection, brought her arms around Selene. She rested her head rested on Selene's shoulder and whispered in the wolfess' ear. "Well, my little horny wolfess, if you ever want to try a fantasy with another woman, don't hesitate to ask me. I play for both teams, if you know what I mean. In the meantime, why don't you go see what Dante's up to? He probably could use your help upstairs. On his work, I mean. But if you get the chance, give him a little lovin' for me, okay?"

The embrace ended and Raksha walked away. The game was unfinished, but something entirely different had taken its place. Selene was learning an awful lot about her friends.
