#2 of Time, Confusion, and the Feelings that Arise

Well it took me a bit longer for this one but here is the next chapter of my new series! I hope this finds all of you well and that you enjoy reading this piece as much as I enjoyed writing it! Comments and critiques are always appreciated!

Flynn lay unmoving as his alarm cried for him to awaken. The truth of the matter was that he had not slept at all that night. The last few weeks had been a blur and today was the day he would be leaving for Prowers University. He and Emrys had already been to their new residence and most of the collie's things were already there. All that was left was to say goodbye to Kat. Kat, who was ever present in his mind lately. Their relationship seemed to grow stronger every day, yet the nagging feeling in the back of his mind never seemed to disappear. He knew it was just the fear of change and that fact gave him some comfort as it assured him that this was fear and not doubt.

He ran through his morning routine and was soon out in the chilling wind that seemed always present in this town. He would miss his home. He would miss walking to the pub and relaxing with his friends. He would miss old Ben the bartender slipping him some spiced wine during the colder nights after a tough day of class. He would even miss his idiot brother always bringing floozies home and letting them use his shower without telling him first. He had walked in on more than a few of the females he knew from his own class, not to mention the random assortment of males. More than anything, he would miss Kat. She would always be here for him, but he was not sure he wanted her to have to wait for him. Kat has always been strong, yet he knew what she wanted in a relationship. He knew she needed constant physical affection in order to feel whole and happy with her mate. Flynn would not be able to provide that from so far away. Would she be able to handle that absence?

The slender Siamese was waiting for him as he stepped into the Dancing Deity. She sat at their usual spot in front of the fireplace, a smile on her face as her tail swayed happily from side to side. He remembered the recent late nights together and the feel of her fur against his. The thoughts stirred something within him, a heat he was all too familiar with. She purred audibly as they embraced, remaining in each other's arms for what seemed like both an eternity and an instant. "I'm going to miss you like hell babe... I'm not sure how I am going to cope without you."

She pulled back, smiling as she spoke. "You will do fine Flynn. I know you well enough to be sure of that. Just do well for me. I can't be made into a liar when I brag to everyone about my boyfriend going to Prowers." Her smile warmed his heart and he nodded, eyes locked onto hers. "Now you better pick up Emrys before he gets irritable. There would be no living with him if you started things off by being late right?"

"Yeah, I guess you're right. I'll see you again soon Kat... I...I love you." His face heated as it always did when he publicly professed his feelings for the feline.

Kat leaned in and kissed him deeply, lingering for a few blissful minutes before pulling away. "I love you too Flynn. Now get going before I decide not to let you."

"I kind of wish you wouldn't..."

"You don't mean that. This is an amazing opportunity for you. You would be daft not to take it! Now get going pup!" Kat slapped his rear playfully sending him on his way. She sighed as she watched him leave, his tail just beyond getting caught in the door. It was something of a normal occurrence for his tail to get caught in that door at least once every two weeks to a month. She chuckled and was glad he had not looked back before leaving. The Siamese wondered if her mate would have left had he seen the tears rolling down her cheeks.

The drive had been tough and the two furs were both fully exhausted by the time they reached their destination. Flynn stretched as he stood in the driveway of his new place of residence. It was a quaint two-story house not unlike the one back home. He grabbed the last of his belongings as Emrys went to unlock the door. The jindo seemed much more excited about this new beginning than he. A new chapter in life meant new furs to meet, new professors to adapt to, and new places to see. While this all seemed fun to the collie, he still was a creature of habit. Kat and his family were back home, living their lives not much differently than they always have. So why was he the one that was forced to leave all of his comforts behind? Emrys was his one saving grace. The canine's energetic and positive outlook on the situation seemed to soothe Flynn's own apprehension. If he was forced to start anew, at least he had Emrys there to see this new start through with him.

Flynn settled into his new room and began the simple task of organizing his workspace. It was mindless work that calmed him in ways no other fur or activity could. He was meticulous in his organization. Every scrap of paper and wire had to be in neat and tidy order. His writing utensils went on one side of the desk while his computer went on another. His lamp was placed at just the right angle to provide optimum lighting for his studies. He planned on spending many long hours losing himself in his work. This way time would seemingly fly and he would be back with Kat in no time. The collie became so engrossed in his work that he failed to notice Emrys walk in. The sound of a throat being cleared gave Flynn a start, unfortunate since at that particular time he was under his desk organizing some wires.

"Well, that worked better than I expected. Why so jumpy buddy?" Emrys chuckled and plopped onto the collie's bed. He surveyed the room, not at all surprised at the order of things within.

"What do you expect when you sneak up on me like that? Geez Emrys I almost had a heart attack..."

"Oh now you're being over-dramatic. Relax! Take a break and let's talk about grabbing some food!"

"You are always hungry... Besides I need to get this all done before classes start."

"Ok so work on it some tomorrow! We just got done with a two day trip to get here. Why can't you just relax like a normal fur?" The jindo sat up, his eyes still scanning around the room.

Flynn sighed and sat down beside his friend and now roommate. "Fine... I'll give it a rest for the day. I need a nap anyway. My head is killing me from all the driving combined with the 40 or so hours of house you made me listen to."

"Hey now, you were enjoying the beats and you know it! I even tried to make sure I played songs with vocals just so you would enjoy yourself!"

"I'm kidding! Seems like I am not the only one who needs to rest... grumpy." Flynn chuckled as Emrys stuck his tongue out playfully. The collie lay back and closed his eyes lazily. He was a tad hungry, but sleep was the biggest issue he needed to tend to right now. It was just mid-afternoon, yet his body still told him that rest was needed. He lay there silently, he nor Emrys saying a word as the comfortable silence of their new home serenaded him to sleep.

Emrys watched as Flynn dozed off beside him. The collie's breathing was soft and rhythmic and the jindo knew he had already fallen into much needed sleep. He leaned closer to his friend, his eyes transfixed upon Flynn's peaceful visage. The collie was a beautiful creature, masculine to an extent yet soft enough still to hold on to his almost angelic figure. The fur on his chest rose and fell with every soft breath. His lips so soft as they curved into what almost could be described as a smile. Emrys leaned closer, a loud pounding drowning out all outside sounds. He was so close, only inches away from what had at times kept him awake at night. He and Flynn were living together. This dream, this fantasy of his was as close as it would ever come to reality. He had known how he felt for his friend for close to four years now. Several times he has come close to revealing these feelings, and each time he refrained. Flynn was much too important to him. If the collie did not return, or even scorned his feelings he would be devastated. Their friendship would never be the same. It was best that he never knew, at least this way things would stay the same between them.

Flynn opened his eyes slowly, his eyes focusing on the figure before him. The jindo lay there sleeping beside him. His forepaws crossed and his muzzle tucked into his chest as he lay curled up on the bed. Emrys was so slight, so slender. He seemed almost childlike as he lay there sleeping. Flynn slowly, quietly rose and turned to ensure he had not woken his friend. The collie grabbed a blanket and threw it over Emrys. No reason for his friend to get cold. He always felt protective of Emrys, like an older brother watching over the younger. It had always been this way, ever since they were pups. Flynn did not ever see that changing. The collie picked up his phone and walked outside. Kat would be happy to hear from him, and he needed to hear her voice.

Kat silently sat in front of the fireplace of the Dancing Deity. Her tail twitched solemnly as thoughts of Flynn swam before her. He seemed happy when they spoke a few hours ago. He and Emrys were settled in and all that was left was to wait for the semester to begin. It must be nice there, in a new place where he could begin with a clean slate. She on the other hand was here, waiting for her own classes to start as she brooded over a steaming cup of mulled wine. Ben had noticed her melancholy and had sent over the wine in hopes of easing the pain of separation. The alcohol only served to darken her mood. The smell reminded her of time spent in the company of two canines. Her two best friends were gone, all she had left was the warmth of this hearth and the knowledge that her mate still loved her, even if from afar.

The feline's silent reflection was shattered by the sudden intrusion of an unwanted visitor. Whether intentional or not, Conall never failed to make his presence known whenever he entered a room. The rabbit clinging to his arm seemed much to eager to let everyone known the two were here together. Her nauseating display set Kat on edge enough that the time for a decisive exit seemed all too near. It was then that her eyes met Conall's. His smile curiously said that he had come looking for her specifically. He whispered into the doe's ear and sent het giggling off towards the bar.

"Well how is my favorite feline this evening? Depressed over my little bro's absence I suppose. Alas, what I would give for such devotion."

"Shut up Conall. I'm not in the mood."

"Whoa there, I did not mean that to offend. I am simply trying to make conversation."

"When have I ever been interested in what you wanted to say? After all the times you have tried to get onto my pants you actually think I would want to talk to you now?" Her glare was icy as death. The fire itself seemed to shiver in the wake of her gaze.

Conall frowned, leaning forward and staring pensively into the fire. "You are not the only one that misses him. Flynn and I may not have always gotten along, but he was still my little brother. I love him and not having him at the house... It feels lonely with just me there. He was the all that I had to remind me of the better days. Did you know I haven't heard from mom or dad in over 6 months? Not even a letter. The only reason I know they are still alive is the fact that a check is still deposited in our accounts every month."

Kat squirmed slightly with the uncomfortable atmosphere. Conall was always the smooth talking pervert with no real depth of character to speak of. This was a whole different fur. His expression was sincere; he actually did miss Flynn. "I'm sorry... I had no idea. Flynn never really talks about your parents... But at least they care enough to pay for everything right? I mean your tuition and everything."

"Yeah... that is true. Though I can't help but wonder whether it is out of love for us or guilt that they are not around. Sure it is nice to know that we can go through school without ever having to work, but I can't help but wonder what life would be like in a real family. What is it like to be loved by parents who are always there? Honestly I am tired of using sex as a means of escape." He glanced up and chuckled at the startled expression on Kat's face. "Yeah, I said it. I am tired of it. I wake up every morning to find some new girl beside me and I can barely even remember a name. I can never have an interesting conversation with a female, other than yourself that is... You, Flynn, and Emrys are the only ones I have ever found myself wanting to talk to. Now Flynn and Emrys are both gone. I just realized how much I will miss them both..."

Kat sat quietly as she tried to piece together a response. Her mind was a jumble as her perception of the collie was shaken to its core. Thankfully she did not have to formulate a response. The bimbo bunny Conall had entered with had come to drag him off, completely ignoring Kat in the process. Conall sighed and gave the feline a sad smile as he walked off. It was strange. This was the first time she had ever felt any kind of connection with Conall. She supposed that underneath all of the façade the canine was not such a bad guy. Flynn would be interested to hear this tale.

"Conall, who was that girl you were talking to?" Lirin gave a squeeze on his arm when he did not answer right away. She was much more forceful than the other girls he had dated, clingy. They would not last very long.

"Her name is Kathleen. She is Flynn's mate."

"Flynn?" Her expression said she had no idea who that was. Gods does she ever listen?

"My little brother? The one I told you just moved away? You can't possibly be that forgetful Lirin." His tone made it clear what he thought of her lack of attentiveness to his words.

"Don't be rude Conall McEwen. I do not tolerate such behavior. I am sorry that I forgot about your little brother's name but we have not been seeing each other very long. Cut me some slack."

"Yeah... I'm sorry... Your right. I have just been a bit edgy lately. It is tough to let someone go."

"Well talking to her is not going to help your troubled mind. I can take care of that when we get to your place!" She winked and giggled as her forepaw gently grazed the front of his jeans. "And anyways you don't want to cause trouble between those two. What would you do if she ended up falling for you? Not a very brotherly thing to do right?"

Conall halted, staring at the bunny as she shuffled from one hindpaw to the other. Who was she to tell him to back off of anyone? As far as the collie was now concerned she was just a few days away from being just another number in his black book. "Look Lirin, I know you mean well and I appreciate the effort on your part. Most females don't really even try to fool themselves into thinking this is something more than what it truly is."

"What....What do you mean? We are dating right? I mean I slept with you... you were my first!"

"Sweetheart come on. We both know that is not true. You have quite the reputation among my other teammates. You cannot expect me to believe you were a virgin." Conall's face burned as a forepaw connected cleanly with his muzzle. Lirin's green eyes brimmed with tears as she slapped him once more, much harder this time. Again and again she hit him, and each one Conall took with not so much as a grimace. Lirin had a fire to her that stirred something within him each time he saw it. It was something easily ignored, but it was more than most of his playthings got out of him.

"I can't believe I thought I meant something to you... Everyone is right about you Conall. You are nothing more than a whorish mongrel! You sleep around with no consideration for the feelings of those whose hearts you crush. I cared for you! I thought I might even be falling for you! Yet here you are telling me I am nothing more than something you like to fuck?"

"Well, like is not quite the word I would use... I mean you were fantastic in bed and I am sure you will make some fur extremely happy in the future. I suppose I enjoyed myself, but like is... just not the right word for this situation."

"Fuck you... FUCK... YOU!!!" This time her forepaw came around closed. The collie knew even as he watched her swing that this one would be damaging. The connection was immense. The force of her fist sent him stumbling into a nearby wall. The fur of his muzzle felt hot and wet as he worked his jaw, checking to see the extent of the damage. His vision flickered with spots as he knelt down in a vain attempt to get his head to stop spinning. "You'll miss me. You will NEVER find someone else who could care for you. Not like I would have... Not like I did..." Lirin then turned and walked away without another word.

Conall leaned against the brick as he massaged his jaw. He deserved this punishment, yet so much more was due him. The past few years for him had been a horrible waste of his life. He had slept with every pretty little fur that came along, male or female. He had broken hearts with a nonchalance that had earned him more scorn than envy. It was all so easy, and then there was Emrys.

The jindo was the first fur he had dated in years. Emrys was unique. His mannerisms, sense of humor, intelligence, and looks all culminated into the only being ever to leave Conall speechless. Emrys was fun. Interesting, sexy, and unpredictable to a level that the collie had never before encountered. They had known each other for the longest of times since Emrys and Flynn had been best friends for so long. It had been surprising when Emrys had decided to make a move on him, since it was usually Conall who made the initial pass. That was a glorious night, full of passion and sweat. His loins stirred just thinking back on that time, and something else as well... his heart? Was this the answer? Was he in love with Emrys? It was this very thought that caused him to hurt the jindo in the first place. Conall was scared and instead of facing the truth he took the only route that he knew would be comfortable. That answer, it seems, was not the easy out he anticipated it being.

He even thought that he would try again with him. That night a few weeks back was supposed to be when the two would reconcile what happened. He would have Emrys back and life would take a turn for the better. Of course it did not work out like that... He got scared again and returned to his ways. One text to an old lay was all it took. She sent him photos back and Emrys had seen those photos. It was not what he wanted to happen. Of course Flynn had to walk in at that moment. Conall's defenses quickly went up and his smug attitude kicked in once more. He was an idiot. Flynn was his baby brother. He loved his brother more than anyone else, why would he try to hide his feelings from the one fur who could have actually helped him?

It was well past midnight when Conall made it back home. It was quiet, lonely, and almost eerie as he looked around the now empty house. This was something he had to get used to. This loneliness was his. It was something the collie deserved for all the pain he had caused. The room was silent as he lay on the floor contemplating how he could cope with this feeling. Maybe he should call someone... It was then he had a thought; one that disgusted even himself. Was Kat feeling lonely without Flynn...?
