#1 of Life of a theif

*************************************************

This is something off of the top of my head and will encompass many ''ventures as well as the adventures of an anthro theif(me) who encounters a dragon in an unusual way... and the fact that it is my first story... which I plan to continue.

*************************************************

My grappling hook bit into the age-old morter and brick with surprising ease, "hmmm perfect..." I thought as a sly grin of satisfaction began to fill my face. I took a few more cautious glances around to make sure that no guards or peasants were roaming about the streets on this moonless yet starlit night, there were none. As I gazed up at my desired destination, a fourth floor window, which had been left open by the servants on night duty. I began to ascend and scale the wall, and was nearly at the window when my eyes widened as caught a glimpse of torchlight emanating from around the wall. I began to climb as fast as my lithe body would permit me to go. I reached the window panting and out of breath as I hurriedly yanked my hook out of the windowsill and retrieved my length of dangling rope and not a moment too soon. I heard voices conversing down below.

"Hey did'ja see that?"

"see what?"

"Something just went through that window up there!"

"Probably just a bird..."

"uh, birds don't fly at night"

"a bat then, look lets just make our rounds so that we can get some sleep tonight!"

"I still think tha-" "Thats why your not the one in charge. C'mon lets not gawk here all night at a window that was left open by the servants so that they could get some fresh air."

There was an undignified grumble from below and I knew that I wasn't going to be caught by... heh well... 'them'. Thank you... ignorance I thought to myself as I took in the luscious view of the hallway with all of it's antique suits of armor, the family crests and paintings hanging on the walls, and the beautifully crafted sconces casting their yellow light on the walls beside them. Made from silver I guessed and would've taken one or two with me as souvenirs but they were.... just a little too hot to handle. Foiled in that little attempt for something to sell, I began to flit down the hallway ducking behind the suits of armor as quietly as a deer through the woods and just as quickly as if it had been startled. "Besides," I thought to myself "I have a more important objective on my hands..." I had set out for a broach of sorts, magical in it's nature, for a wizard who was paying me well for it, and had rumors that it was in this very castle. Traveling down the hallway for what seemed to me as miles without end I approached a set of red oak doors, three times as tall as me and more than likely worth more than my life itself... "it is almost outright disgusting how some anthros can afford all of these unnecessary decorations" reaching out toward the gold and ivory handles that were adorning this door with unreal majesty, I gave a small push and the door flung open, as if it were more than happy to allow me in and. 'borrow' the secrets that it was protecting. Behind the doors luckily, was right where I needed to be, the room which housed all objects magical in property and nature. Perusing the untold numbers of spell books resting on their copper-rimmed shelves, my eye caught a glimpse of a few that would be of interest to me, so into my back pouch they went. After an eternity of sifting through objects of almost all shapes and sizes, I found myself picking at the lock of a chest no bigger than a shoe box but with a lock more complex than mind of a warlock nestled out of the way in a small dark corner of the room. Picking the lock would take me hours if not days to crack I had determined, from probing the annoying piece of security for more than 20 minutes of my precious time. "Screw it" I thought to myself putting the small chest into my pouch, "I'll deal with this thing later with the proper tools"

I turned around and froze the from beyond the gaping maw of the doorway I heard excited voices and a madly gesticulating servant panic stricken I picked up the nearest heavy object and hurled it with everything I had at the one of the nearest windows, this being done I knew that I would be hanged for theft or tortured in the castles dungeon till I was dead, either way the end was the same for me if I didn't high tail it outta there. Rushing for the window I set my grappling hook into the windowsill and sliding down the length of my rope when a guard began to fir arrows at me. Now almost at a freefall to get away from the enraged arrow slinging guard I landed on the ground... Hard with a hearty *FWOMP! * And a grunt to match as the wind was knocked out of me. Yet the moment I rose to my feet an arrow struck my shoulder nearly missing some of the vital artery that was in that area, I shrieked in pain while I was trying to get my body to move, and move as fast as it could. I was running for all that I was worth now, I could hear the arrow whizzing past me as more guards had joined the first at the window. Fifty yards away, the arrows still threatened to strike me, one hundred yards away I could hear the guards beginning to shout that there had been a robbery, one hundred and fifty yards away finally out of arrow range and seen the edge of the ancient woods less than a hundred yards away. Still running, my shoulder in a searing blaze of pain and my chest feeling as though it would burst and spill out my entrails at any moment, I forced my feel to pound earth and carry me away from the castle and all those that I had infuriated whilst on my little visit to their Magic Room. Finally a safe distance away bobbing and weaving through the trees and across the narrow streams that fed the forest I was just running, afraid to stop, afraid to look back, with the thought that I was going to die deeply imbedded within the confines of my narrow mind, I just ran, weaved, ducked and dodged my way through the forest I look back for a brief instant expecting to see the guards with their dogs chasing me down there were none turning back around I released a *WHULGGH* as I was close lined by some vines. I did a full back flip and a half landing on a hole that was covered up with vines and foliage from the forest. Staring up into the night sky, my chest was heaving and struggling to shovel air through my body and feeling a little wet in my nether regions from the moment when the vines flipped me. I received a rush of pain from the arrow that was lodged in my shoulder and cried out in anguish when I felt a small jerk... down. "OH SHIIIiiiit" *THUD* and was knocked out.

I awoke the next morning to find myself in a large cavern with strange light keeping the place aglow, suddenly I remembered that I had been being chased an gave a start and cried out in pain from my shoulder from trying to get up. I heard an amused chuckle from nearby and turned around to see a large blue and green dragon walking from a tunnel to my right into the cavern where I was. Too scared to move I just sat there amazed to finally see a full-fledged dragon, I myself being only half dragon. The dragon padded slowly and carefully over to me and said to me "ya know ya talk 'n scream in your sleep right" sitting there shocked all I could do was gawk and nod in amazement of seeing a dragon this beautiful. His face was a brilliant cobalt blue with eyes that were a bright and beautiful yellow that seemed to glow even in the daylight and... That when gazing at you seemed to not see you but what you were, as if the dragon could tell every thing about you just form looking into your eyes, what you were in the past, who you are now and who you'll be in the future, what you were like, how you behaved. The dragons face full of intelligence smiling softly at me allowing me to collect myself before trying to respond. Looking around me at my surroundings I ask "where am I?" The dragon responds "you are in my den, where you are not, now that is the better question, *nodding slightly at me* and one that you need ask yourself." A small pause before he continued "hmm I see that your shoulder is still bothering you" as I shifted the weight painfully off of my right shoulder. I look at the dragon once more; "do you have a name?" He responds "Embroth, and what about you?", "my name is Mohlwani", "pleased to make your acquaintance" I nod, "I will bring you some food and a drug for that wound of yours after you eat and I apply the drug I would like you to get some more rest, ya look like you could use it" again I just nod. When he returned with the pungent smelling drug and the food, he nodded for me to help myself to the food while he picked up the herbal mixture and applied it to my shoulder, I winced in pain and he apologized and said "sorry, would you like to apply this?" I shook my head and he continued to apply the balm, which still burned... But I had turned my attention to the fruits that he had brought me from the forest nearly everything that the forest had to offer. I lifted a handful of berries to my muzzle and suddenly realized just how hungry I really was, I began to wholf things down sometimes forgetting to chew, and I heard that same amused chuckle from Embroth, and I heard him say laughingly "you might want to slow down or it'll come back up the way that it went in..." As his voice echoed from down the tunnel that he had emerged from earlier. I felt rather tired after I had finished gorging myself on the delectable that he had offered me, however right before I closed my eyes, I seen him re-enter the cavern and join me, in what I assumed was his personal bedding he laid down and pulled me close resting an arm over me, and soon both of us were asleep.
