It's been ten long and lonely years since that night and I haven't aged a single day. Luckily I've kept hidden from anyone seeking me for their scientific experiments. During most of those ten years I spent constantly on the run until I decided to rest. I made my home in the largest wildlife preserve in the western part of the United States. A rather peaceful place to live, if you don't mind the occasional drive by forest tour.

Many nights I lie awake wondering how the girls are getting along with Sierra at home. Naturally I've been tempted to make the long trip to go visit them but, it was a bad idea. I recalled that if I did it would make things very difficult for them and myself. Luckily during my time living here I've been able to avoid drawing attention to myself. The park rangers don't know my den is about a fifteen minute walk from their building.

Granted I can hear everything that goes on just by sitting on the ledge of the cliff. Though I really can't say that I'm alone all the time a local wolf pack visit randomly. Now I found rather strange at first but, I've grown used to them over time. They come around frequently during winter so I share my den with them until the spring. I can't bring myself to sleep amongst them so I made myself a ledge to sleep on.

As of late I've been having trouble sleeping it's almost like there's something missing. The sad part is I don't have the slightest clue what that missing piece might be. Most nights I stare up at my den's ceiling until I'm able to drift slowly to sleep. Though on an early and warm Sunday morning I caught wind of a new scent in the forest. It didn't take me long to find the scent and track it hoping it wasn't a hunter.

If it was the guy won't be too thrilled to have his rifle snapped in half by my fangs. Until what sounding like the noise of a very young child sobbing uncontrollably. The poor thing probably got separated from her family so I decided to help. Using all my senses to locate the child the next question was how could I approach them. Especially without running the risk of actually scaring them until something came to mind.

I'll state for the record I wasn't looking forward to this and I wasn't thrilled. Once I located the child I did my best to make myself as small and friendly as I could be. As I crawled slowly towards the little girl I hoped that she wouldn't freeze upon seeing me. When I was close enough I laid down besides her but, she wasn't bothered by my presence. The second noticed me laying there her tiny arms wrapped around my neck tightly.

The second she I nuzzled her neck and cheek to show I meant her no harm. At this point in time my tail started moving uncontrollably making the little girl smile. Without warning her hand brushed across the branded Z on my right shoulder. "Doggy why did somebody draw a Z on your arm?" She asked in very sweet tone of voice. Naturally I wanted to tell her about but, I didn't want scare her and have her run away.

I motioned her to climb up onto my back then walked to the ranger's station. Hoping that while on our way to the station I'd run into her parents along the way. Taking my time just in case I heard them calling out her name sadly nothing but, silence. Sadly when we arrived at the station the little girl freaked then clutched my scruff. Instead I walked back to my den which wasn't too far away but, still within earshot.

After a while she fell asleep on my bed, as I got up then quietly exited my den. Luckily a family of campers was nearby so I overheard the news report over their radio. I carefully listened in the reporter said there was a family was murdered five miles away. My head whipped back towards the entrance of my den I couldn't believe she survived. First thing tomorrow I'll take to see a trusted friend of mine knowing she'd help her.

Without warning I saw flashlights waving around, it must be the park rangers. They're clearly looking for the little girl hoping she was alive and hiding nearby. Sadly I needed to scare them off for the time being knowing she'd freak out. I walked to the back of my den then dashed for the exit and jumped off the cliffside. As I landed on the ground with a loud thud right in the center of the large search party.

They quickly spun around only to be facing one very large, angry, white wolf. Doing the smart thing they decided to run from the area fearing for their lives. From there I returned to my den where the little girl was sound asleep on my bed. I remained awake for a couple hours then drifted off until the sun light lit up my den. With a long stretch I went to go rustle up some fresh berries and some cool water.

As I went to leave she slowly sat up in bed then yawned loudly and smiled. "Good, morning Z did you sleep well to?" She replied after rubbing her eyes slowly. Walking over she petted my head then I picked her up and went to grab breakfast. She hugged my neck as we trotted towards the small pond nearby where I lived. It made me feel like a protective father but, she still needed to be returned soon.

Once we got to the pond she got off, walked to the water's edge then washed up. I kept a watchful eye knowing, Helan would be coming by to go fishing for food. With little warning I heard rustling nearby I got up and surveyed the area carefully. "Well, morning Zero looks like you found a stray, mind if I come closer?" Helan wondered. Allowing her to approach but, I laid down nearby in case something went wrong.

Sure enough brought the little girl closer to Helan as she kindly knelt down. "Hello, there sweetie I see, Zero has been keeping you safe. I'll bet you're hungry I've got something you might like for breakfast." Helan replied reaching into her bag. She pulled out what looked like a granola bar and I had to admit it looked tasty. Considering for the last ten years I've been hunting for my food and seeing that bar was torture.

"Thank you ma'am my name is, Tammy." She replied taking the bar from her. Helan introduced herself to Tammy and thanked me for keeping her safe overnight. Next she suggested that we go back to her cabin for a really hearty and warm breakfast. With that Tammy took Helan's hand then the two started walking towards her cabin. Sadly as I went to leave Tammy asked me if I was going to be going with them.

I don't know how anyone could refuse to do anything that little one wanted. As we left towards Helan's cabin Tammy climbed onto my back then continued. When we got there she unlocked the door and the two girls walked inside the building. Once the door began to close I decided it was time for me to head back home. Before I could get far I felt someone gently tugging on my tail and oddly enough I was right.

When I turned and saw Tammy I twisted back then snorted passively at her. She falls back onto her bottom laughing up a storm and made sure she didn't hurt herself. Naturally she laughed ever hard as my long whiskers tickled her face and chin. Helan came back out and told us that breakfast was ready and to come on inside. While Tammy went inside the cabin i walked around to the back and stepped onto the patio.

Once I saw them sitting down inside I found a spot to lay down and observe. Sadly my stomach began complaining, telling me to get up and go hunting for something. The question I then faced was do I dare leave to go but, it doesn't seem right to leave. My stomach growled loud enough for them to hear through the large screen door. "Zero, go ahead she'll be fine here until you get back." Helan stated.

Tammy nodded with a mouth full of food so I got up and jumped off the patio. Now the closest game trail from Helan's place was roughly three miles to the south east. Of course I knew I could cover that distance easily enough but, I was still worried. I decided to ignore my stomach and hopped back onto the wooden deck and laid down. When I heard the faucet from the kitchen sink turn on I knew the girls had finished eating.

"Z, come inside please I want to play." Tammy asked opening the screen door. Anyone who could resist this little peanut must have something clearly wrong with them. When I stood up Tammy vanished apparently she was planning on surprising me. The second I walked into the parlor Tammy tackled and like a good sport I fell down. Helan simply could not believe just how gentle I was being around this little girl.

We played for a good while until I heard footsteps steadily walking up the path. I slowly rose to my feet then swiftly tracked where the sound was coming from. Helan looked up from her book at me and could see there was something clearly wrong. Placing the book on the cushion next to her, got up and looked out the nearest window. "You can relax Zero it's only the park rangers they come by occasionally to check on me." She stated.

Naturally I didn't want the rangers to see me so I tried to sneak out the door. As I reached the sliding door then dug at with my front paw until it opened enough. From there I slipped outside but, I wasn't alone when I sensed someone following close behind me. When I looked back Tammy was holding onto my tail, I gave her a parental look. Next I gently nudged her back into the house and closed the sliding door behind her.

When I motioned her to stay inside she wisely rejoined Helan in the living room. Once they left my sight I stood up on my hind legs then walked to the front. As I peeked around the corner I saw two rangers each carrying a nightstick, handcuffs and a radio. They knocked on the door and asked Helan to open up which she did a minute later. "Howdy, guys what brings you two around my little home?" She wondered.

To be continued.
