Chapter 3 - Finding Rayraw Island - Natia Emory

I decided it would be best if I checked on my grandmother first and let Niyol finish up his work. Plus, I wanted to know if my grandmother knew anything about this island. I lightly jogged through the trails back to my tribes main settlement in my bathing suit. The wind was still blowing so it was a little chilly, but not unbearable. I was able to reach my grandma's hut in fifteen minutes and to my luck, she was sitting behind it in her favorite chair that her husband had made her. I watched a couple minutes before approaching her. She was sewing some small new moccasins together; she's still the best footwear maker in my opinion. She's always made sure there were no rips or cracks in them.

"It's not always nice to spy on your family, Natia," she spoke. She tilted her head back a little.

"Sorry Grandma. I was just curious as to what you were doing today," I apologized while side stepping around a stump to get closer to her. "I always forget that your hearing and eyesight haven't left you."

"That's okay, young one. Those oysters last night were lovely; very delectable with blue berries," she smiled at me while tying off a final knot to the shoe. Though she was on the slow side, she continued to be very precise.

"I was wondering if you have ever heard of a certain island in the East," I began.

"Does this have to do with one of the fisher's stories? Those men are always starting things," she grumbled.

"Well, sort of. Takoda told us a creepy story today. Him and his brother went to a place called Gerichulaw Island and he described some scary situations. Only thing is, he said it was a mistake and it really wasn't Gerichulaw Island. Do you know of any mysterious places or islands that are in the East?"

"Hmm," She thought for a second,"someplace in the East that's dangerous. Only thing I've ever heard of is a story that my father told me about."

"Really?! What's it called? Is it real?!" I stammered out excitedly.

"Slow down there child. No need to jump to conclusions, especially with my slower reflexes. My dad told me of a place where food and paradise seems real and that you would never want to leave. He said that it has a mind of its own that may force you to leave or worse."

"Wha...What does that mean?"

"I dont exactly know, child. All i can remember is that it has a purple mist that is very dangerous. He always emphasized that you should never let it touch you because it can freeze or burn you. Supposively, it can also make you drift to a never ending sleep, or choke you on a whim."

I thought for a couple seconds about this new information. "Do you know if it's real? Does it truly exist?"

"Who told you about this place, again?"

"Takoda."

"I sometimes believe that it's real only because of the scar on his ankle. It's definitely a burn mark, but I am not positive if he got it from this island."

"I'll have to find out from him if that's what it's from. Do you remember if this island has a name?" I inquired.

"I do believe your great grandfather called it, or named it, Rayraw Island. It has all the raw materials and resources for survival, but the danger, the ray, always comes before it and makes it inhabitable and deadly," she said sternly. "Are you thinking about visiting this place, Natia?"

"I was thinking about it. It's a new place and if it could be explored, then maybe it could be more territory for us, plus more food for this growing community," I admitted.

"I advise you to just forget about that. It's too dangerous and not worth losing lives over."

"Alright, Grandma. If it is truly that dangerous then maybe it is not worth it. I'd rather not hurt the ones I love. Thank you for your wisdom." I leaned over and shook her hand. She gave me a kiss on the forehead and I went on my way. I had to think about this on my own.
