The three Reklan walked along the path that the fox had first travelled on when he and the vixen were delivered to Dan and Liz's house. At the time he hadn't had much chance to look around because he was too busy trying to keep up with the person who was escorting them while trying not to drop the vixen he was carrying in his arms. Now that they were walking more slowly however, the fox had a chance to fully observe the surroundings.

They were in a large housing estate, the house the fox was staying in being one of many identical structures that were arranged in an oval shape, all facing inwards towards the center. An ovular road ran around the front of all the houses, creating a circuit which had a branch coming off it that led out of the estate. In the center there was a small man-made lake surrounded by a grassy area which took up the rest of the space in the center. One point of the oval had a children's play area in it while the opposite side was dotted with a few trees and had a small stretch of sand which extended out from the lake, serving as a minature beach.

There were quite a few humans outside. Some were swimming in the lake while others were playing a game on the grass or watching over children who were running around the play area. There were also many Reklan going about their daily business, either doing work in the front gardens of the houses or walking to the town like the fox was.

As the fox was walking along, he had already noticed that the path was divided in half by a line that ran parallel to the road. Every Reklan was walking on the left side, whereas Humans walked on the right side of the path, although occasionally a Human who was stuck behind a slow group of people would shift over to the left to overtake, using it as a 'fast lane'. However, as soon as they were past the group of people, they would quickly jump over the line to the right side of the path, as if the left side was corrupted with a fatal disease left behind by the Reklan who had walked on it.

Eventually they reached the gate leading out of the estate, Sam deciding to break the silence with some talking.

"It'll take about fifteen minutes to walk to town from here. Once we're there I'll probably show you a few of the shops you'll be sent to and some other places around town, but that won't take up a whole five hours. It's practically a day off for me."

Sam seemed to smile at the thought, he probably didn't get much spare time where he could do what he liked. It had been the same case with the fox's previous owner, the only time that he had for himself being the time that the slaves were sent to their sleeping quarters, but since the fox was almost always tired out by his work, he usually spent all of that time sleeping.

"What's your master like?", Voss asked.

"He's good", the dog replied. "I've always got work to do, but he never gives me more than I can handle. My master also punishes me if I do something bad, but it's never physical, only something like no food for that day or having to sleep outside when it's raining."

The fox felt happy for Sam. The dog had been lucky to have such a kind owner, even if he wasn't as kind as Liz and Dan. Sam continued to talk.

"Actually, if it weren't for my owner buying me, I would probably have been refreshed the next day."

The fox shuddered at the thought. He was never close to being refreshed, but he knew what it was. Every couple of months, the Reklan distributors would 'refresh' their stocks. This involved removing the old Reklan who didn't sell in that time and replacing them with new ones to sell.

Sometimes if they were lucky, those due for refreshment would be bought but if they weren't, they had a variety of possible futures, nearly all of them bad. If they were lucky, they would be taken away and shot, but usually they were sold off to a variety of minimum payers that made use of the Reklan in their various, horrible ways.

One of the main places to be sent was one of the massive workshops in which the Reklan were bought and treated as cheap labour tools. Some of the workshops would feed the Reklan and let them rest to get the most work out of them. However, most of them wouldn't do neither, just using them as the biological equivalent of a disposable battery - once they died, you just bought a new one.

Another option would be that you were bought for one of the human entertainment companies. There were a plethora of possibilities for what they were going to use you for. You could be used as a disposable prop for one of their 'this is how we beat the Reklan' movies, where you would be put in large groups on a set where you would then be gunned down or blown up by 'the human forces' so that the films could seem more realistic, having scenes that were much more detailed, and inhumane, than what you could get through using CGI.

Other forms of entertainment you could be used in were gladiatorial fights, which could be alright if you were good at it and you could actually become famous and be treated well until you finally fell to another Reklan's blade. On a much larger scale than the gladiatorial fights were the all-out battles that the Reklan were put in. The Humans arranged a battle scenario where two or maybe more groups of Reklan were equipped with medieval weapons and pitted against each other in battles that sometimes lasted for days if there were enough Reklan on either side.

Live executions were also very popular among the Humans, some of the Reklan being tortured both physically and mentally, being forced to beg and whimper whilst being struck by whips or being cut with knives and hooks. Other forms of torture included burning at the stake, having burning metal be placed on their skin, having molten metal be poured down various orifices of their body, being pulled on a stretching rack, electrocution and various other things that only the most horrible of people would be able to think of.

Reklan were also used for army training and the testing of new weapons. There was only so well you could get at shooting with still targets, so why not use Reklan as moving targets to improve? Thousands of Reklan were bought by the army to be used as target practice for soldiers or as experiments to see how much damage was done by new forms of explosives or other kinds of weaponry.

And last, but definitely not the least, is being sold off to people who ate Reklan. The Reklan were delivered, and then were either killed then cooked, or cooked alive by the demented people who enjoyed the taste of Reklan meat. Sometimes they even carved the meat off the Reklan while they were still alive, making the most of the Reklan's ability to stay alive after experiencing what would normally have killed a Human so they could inflict as much pain upon the Reklan as possible.

When the fox's mind wandered back to the real world he noticed the vixen's questioning look. She was lucky not to have heard of refreshment as it was a thing that could keep you from sleep for days if you thought too much about it, and the fox was not prepared to give the vixen nightmares about it for the following week, especially if he was going to be sleeping with her for the time he spent with Liz and Dan as his owners. The fox decided to keep the knowledge from the vixen, shaking his head at her and giving her a 'I'll tell you later' look.

The fox turned round to the dog and noticed that he was shaking. Voss sympathised greatly with Sam, it must have been terrible for him for the few days before refreshment, thinking of all the horrible things that could happen to him if he didn't get bought within the next couple of days. The fox reached his arm around Sam's shoulder and drew him into a sideways hug. The dog looked up at him, his expression giving the fox a silent 'thank you' as they walked side by side, the vixen looking even more curious and confused about what was happening. Eventually the silence was broken when the dog asked a question.

"So what are your masters like?"

"They're brilliant", the fox replied. "We're treated more as friends than slaves, and they even gave us some credits for the work we've done."

The fox reached into his pocket and drew out the two yellow chips he'd been given by Liz. Sam stared agape at the twenty credits resting in the fox's palm. A quiet 'wow' was all the dog could say until he'd spent a few minutes to recover himself.

"That's a lot of money", Sam pointed out.

"Yeah, I know. And that was from only one day of work."

Sam's eyes seemed ready to explode at the comment. Twenty credits in one day? That was enough to buy food for a Reklan to last at least a few days. However, the dog also knew that a Reklan who was carrying around money could easily have it stolen from them since they couldn't confront a Human because of the various rules that were in place for the Reklan to follow. Sam voiced his concern.

"Just make sure you keep those credits hidden, otherwise a Human might try to take it from you, and you won't be able to do anything about it."

"We were given pots to put the credits in, but we forgot to use them. I'll make sure we do store our credits as soon as we get back."

"That's probably a good idea", Sam agreed. "I wish I could have owners like yours. Ones that actually thought of me as more than a slave, ones that gave me some freedom to do what I liked, even if it was only something small like having a tiny bit of money to do what I wanted with."

"Isn't that every Reklan's wish?", Voss questioned.

"I guess so, but I want it to be that every Reklan has the chance to be more than just a slave to the Human race", Sam said.

"Then why don't we make a group?", the vixen chirped.

Voss and Sam turned turned to regard the vixen as she explained her idea.

"We can make a group of people where we all do little things to try and work towards that goal. At the moment it can be just us three working really hard to try and get our masters to notice. If Sam's master notices how hard he's working then Sam can try and find the right time to ask if he could have some independence, and we could ask our masters if they would help us with trying to achieve our goal for other Reklan."

The other two nodded in agreement. This plan could really work out, and it wasn't as if anything bad could happen if it didn't, the worst case being that they were told off by their masters for coming up with 'stupid' ideas. The vixen continued explaining.

"Then if the first part works out, we can start to bring other Reklan into the group and make it so that they also do little things to try and achieve the aim. Eventually if we have enough people we can get all the little bits of help to combine into one big bit which can hopefully get our aim to succeed. Do you think that's a good idea?"

"I think that's a brilliant idea!", Voss said as he embraced the vixen in a hug. "All we need now is for Sam to agree and we could start right now."

The dog hesitated for a while, unsure whether such an aim would be achievable, but eventually he gave in. What could go wrong with it? It would just mean that he had to put a bit more effort into his work and bring up the courage to ask his master whether he could have some form of independence. If he was rejected, then it would only result in a bit of disappointment and maybe some minor punishment, but nothing else.

"Fine, it's not as if I have anything else to do. But you mu-", the dog's voice was cut off as the two foxes embraced him in a hug, nearly suffocating him before he could pull his muzzle out from between their chests and continue what he was saying.

"But you must know that some Humans, no matter how harmless what we are doing seems, will think that we are trying to rebel, right? Instead of making it better, it might just make it worse for the Reklan and any owners of those involved."

Voss thought about it and thought that yes, that might become a possibility. However, the vixen was quick to correct them.

"But remember, everything done would just be small things. Only someone who was specifically looking for this kind of thing would be able to find it. The most any normal person would be able to see would be that some Reklan are working slightly harder, and that's about it."

Both Voss and Sam were satisfied with the explanation and the three Reklan broke from their hug and started walking to avoid any unwanted attention they might attract by staying in a hug for too long. They smiled all the way to town, imagining the things that they could achieve with such an idea.
