inside the vortex of spinning condensation were brilliant strokes of lightning criss crossing here and there constantly. soon the lightning was becoming bigger and bigger. the electricity was starting to make hairs go up and everything smelled of compost and ozone. no one noticed the vans or the coyote wearing a black suit in the building with a walkie talkie almost plastered in front of his mouth. victor took one wary step after another towards this phenomenon when all of a sudden it happened.

a white light exploded from the funnel down onto the gazebo causing the building to star to catch fire. a excruciatingly high pitched whirring filled the air while victor froze, only a few feet away from the when everything stopped. the spinning, the noise, the lightning, everything. everything that is, except for two things, a glass of wine on a table fell, crashing and spilling it's blood-like contents on the ground, and the movement of the coyote's mouth saying only three words, each word sounded out carefully and with a twisted meaning.

"Rein. them. in.""

then, all of sudden, a blast of white and green blinded everyone, shortly followed by an explosion that caused the whole area to shutter, knocking victor back three feet where he broke his fall with his right shoulder, the rest of his body following suit. a lot of the sounds he heard were muffled and his vision was blurry. he stood up on shaky legs and looked at what was left of the gazebo and was shocked. it wasn't the fact that the gazebo was destroyed almost completely save for a fragment of a pillar here and half a bench there, but it was what was inside the gazebo that drew him to it while everyone else was running away, screaming. it was a fox, but that was not the only thing. the fox had some sort of military uniform on but from where it was hard to tell as it was torn, frayed, and burnt. laying right next to him was two other anthros, a wolf and a lynx this time, that was wearing the same type of uniform, and an unusually long rifle with a bayonet attached. the thing that shocked me the most was that the lynx and the fox were still breathing. victor saw the fox mouthing something and, curiosity took over and he leaned closer to hear what he was saying he barely caught the words as he whispered them so quietly and the screaming from the other anthros that were there. all he said was three words.

"he is real"

he did not have much time to react to what he said as he turned and saw a soldier pointing a gun at him. he didn't wait for him to say 'halt', he just ran away. he ran back to where the cafe that he originally came from was with the intention to hide. he stopped as he looked inside to see two more soldiers both wearing black hazmat suits holding machine guns to the heads of the people inside. horrified, victor turned to run but froze when he heard, "fire!" and felt a burning pain in his left shoulder. the shot broke him from his petrified state as he ran for the alley right by the cafe, using his right arm to clutch his left shoulder, ducking his head. he half dove, half tumbled in the alley and behind a garbage dumpster. victor could hear the soldiers standing not even five feet away, listening and looking if they could locate where victor could've ran off to. once again, victor froze but this time he also held his breath and prayed, which is something he never has really done and meant but in that moment he could not have meant it more, praying that the soldiers would drop down dead or something to distract them would happen. as if his prayers were answered, the commanding officer of the both of them came behind them and said "what do you think this is, a goddamn tea party?! get to those prisoners or i'll have you two run until i see your stomachs on the side of the road an hours drive from where you're currently running!"

realizing the the commanding officer meant it, the two soldiers ran back to where they were supposed to have stayed. victor let out the breath of air that he had been holding in, ending with a groan due to the wound in his shoulder. he moved to get out of his hiding spot when a car that had been too close to where the initial blast was went off, sending shrapnel in all directions, one piece lodging itself into victor's hand and causing him even more pain. victor jerked his hand back and stood up, holding his hand close to his body with his other arm, his hand on his shoulder. 'of course the second wound would have to be on the same side.' victor thought bitterly. victor turned towards the alley and started to run, the adrenaline ebbing the pain a little. victor ran and didn't look back until he was out of the town that had, until a short period of time ago, had been a friendly one. now the town looked unrecognizable as the same place, the fires giving the buildings an eerie glow, the clouds giving the entire atmosphere a supernatural and deadly feeling. it had started to rain. victor looked around and saw another survivor here and there running for their life, some not making it. victor turned his back and walked home.
