Stories of Skarn - The Quick Reference Sheet

#2 of Story Scraps and Cheat Sheets

This is basically the material that I listed in one of my previous Journal entries, but it was kind of inaccessible. I put it the original Journal Entry in my "Story Scraps and Cheat Sheets" folder, but for some reason it remained invisible if you accessed that folder from my stories tab. As a result, I'm sure most of my readers (all ten of you) didn't even realize it existed. At any rate, I'll be keeping this one updated from now on, rather than the one in my Journal entry.

This is basically a quick-reference sheet that lists information about all of my stories that take place on the fictional world/continent of Skarn. That encompasses "A Gryphon's Tail", "Tales from the Cat House", and "The Missing Lynx". Here you can see the reading orders, a comprehensive list of character appearances, and some other stuff that I thought would be fun to write about. In the future, I'll probably also use this cheat sheet to jot down "behind the scenes" info about each story or chapter.

If folks like this cheat sheet, I might do more in the future. I do have some vague plans to write an "Atlas of Skarn" that will be updated as new stories come out, probably narrated by Rhaelyn, Saga, and other notable characters from my stories.

Skarn References - Reading Order As I continue to write further stories in the same series, it would behoove me to make note of the order they should be read in. At the moment it's fairly straightforward, but that could change as I add more chapters to the mix.

The First Story Arc: The story that began all of this nonsense is A Gryphon's Tail, which I spent the better part of a year writing. Technically seven years, since I wrote the first chapter a very long time ago, but most of the effort was decidedly more recent. It spans eight chapters in total, and takes place simultaneous to the first four stories in the Tales from the Cat House series.

For those worried about the exact continuity, the stories were released in the following order: AGT Part 1 through 5, One Night at the Cat House, Cats & Dogs, AGT Part 6 and 7, Fox Hunting, Bad Things Come in Threes, and AGT Part 8. When read in that order, you can follow my general thought process rather easily, as well as the rapid evolution of my writing style.

The Second Story Arc: After the conclusion of the first major story ("A Gryphon's Tail") I began a second, much more ambitious arc. Given my love of wordplay, this one is also a rather unsubtle pun - "The Missing Lynx". It is a direct follow-up to the previous arc, and draws elements of all thirteen entries that I had previously written. I don't currently have an exact number of chapters planned out, but if I had to guess it will likely end after about twelve installments. Maybe more.

Much like the first arc, the second arc will take place alongside a new number of short stories in the Tales from the Cat House series. The first four have been finished, and there will likely be more, spanning the events that occur in the city of Ma'Karach while the rest of the characters are off saving the world (or whatever). These stories serve as short "one-offs" where I can just have fun, while also further expanding on minor characters that I think deserve more screen time. Sometimes they even tie into the main story.

The reading order for the second story arc is as follows: TML Part 1, TML Part 2, TML Part 3, Idol Playthings, TML Part 4, TML Part 5, How You Play the Game, TML Part 6, TML Part 7, Employee Benefits, Featherweights, and TML Part 8.

The Third Story Arc: Well, to be honest I haven't really planned it out that far. I have some vague ideas of what might come after The Missing Lynx reaches its inevitable conclusion, but those ideas are subject to change based on any number of things. I've entertained the idea of going back to explore some of the characters' pasts, but I may just as easily move forward with the further adventures of whatever character strikes my fancy.

At my current rate of progress, I'll start working on this third story arc by the year 2020 or so.

Skarn References - Character Appearances and Chronology There are a number of different characters that have appeared in the fourteen entries I've so far released, with more being introduced in each subsequent part. I'm a huge fan of continuity and consistent character appearances, so many characters make multiple appearances throughout the various stories. When they can't make it in person, they're often mentioned in casual stories, thoughts, or through even stranger plot devices.

To help folks keep track of character appearances, I've assembled the following cheat sheet. This will also help folks who only care about certain characters to find stories they may prefer to read over others. That's fine, I know that few people will like every single thing I write, so I don't mind if they skip right to the ones that interest them.

The Saga Saga - A List of Entirely Non-Existent Novels And, just for fun, here's a list-in-progress of Saga D. Cat's bewildering array of imaginary novels. None of these stories are written, but they serve as both in-jokes and plot devices, and more than a few of them are nods to elaborate RP scenes that I took part in long, long ago.

Against the Hordes of the Bitch Queen - The prelude to the first Amazonian War. This book chronicles the first meeting between the Heroes and Veridia, when the bounty huntress was still loyal to Cygna. Also features the lethal undead knight known as Ser Hedrick Grundle, Dalleth the Wolfwere Queen, and the cadre of elite bounty hunters known as the Dogs of War.

A portion of this story was written by KiwiBB! You can check it out over here: http://www.sofurry.com/view/1078115

By Beak and Claw, A Gryphon's Tail - The latest of Saga's books, based entirely off of a second-hand retelling recited by Alandrea the Archer. You've probably already seen this one! Rhaelyn really hates this book.

In the Shadow of Darkness - A darker tale, focusing on Katsumi Nightshade's quest to murder her twin brother, Nocht Nightshade. This book takes place between the two Amazonian Campaigns, and also features The Bandit Queen (AKA Lira Talonas). Rhaelyn hates this book too.

Saga and the Crimson Corsairs of Dread Island - Because I had just watched the latest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie, and I was all hopped up on pirates. Contains Saga's efforts to curb the rampant piracy plaguing the shipping routes along the Savage Coast. Dread Island is a blatant reference to the old D&D module, 'Isle of Dread'.

The Pirate Queen may or may not be a figment of the Alleycat's fevered imagination.

Saga and the Splendiferous Five - No details known. Title is an obvious parody of 'The Magnificent Seven', and 'Splendiferous' was the most absurd adjective I could think of. Presumably involves a story about the five most prominent Heroes (Saga, Rhaelyn, Veridia, and two others?).

Saga and the Waste Lord's Harem - Some denizens of Skarn dismiss Saga's scrawlings as borderline literary pornography, but that's not always true. A lot of the novels are just trashy meta-fantasy. Not so with this one. This one is absolutely porn. May involve the succubus, Empress, since The Wastes are her stomping grounds.

Saga versus the Pyrocasters - No details known. 'Pyrocaster' is a cool word.

The Cult of Pure Darkness - One of the first novels to focus almost entirely on a young Rhaelyn fa Soren, albeit under his pseudonym of Ray-Lynn the Soaring. Chronicles his campaign to shut down an evil cult, the Order of the Obsidian Altar. The story culminates with Rhaelyn locating and claiming three of the four Idols of Morality.

The Dark Lords of Full Moon Mountain - Presumably involves Saga's efforts to thwart the plans of Dalleth, the Wolfwere Queen. May be a lead-in or follow-up to 'Against the Hordes of the Bitch Queen', due to Dalleth's close ties to The Bitch Queen.

The Missing Saga - Chronicles the harrowing tale of Saga's kidnapping, at the hands of The Dark Wizard's minions. It also marks the first (and possibly only) appearance of the tertiary antagonists, the traitorous Zayne Fleetpaw and the monstrous Arachnotaur Queen.

The Saga Begins - The first tale of many. Chronicles the first meeting between Saga and Rhaelyn, and focuses on entirely unimaginative plot devices like 'The Key of Destiny' and 'The Vault of Secrets'. Rhaelyn hates this book so much.
