#15 of Star Fox Chronicles

I was awakened the next day from an urgent call. The loud series of beeping made me jump out of bed. I staggered down the stairs still luggin on my uniform pants and fell face first at the last few steps. Fox hit on the hologram projector in the middle of the living room to reveal General Pepper.

"Get down here immediately," He spoke, "we have an emergency situation." The hologram kicked off right after that leaving the team in different states of confusion and alarm. I knew immediately from my encounter with Wolf the day before about the Claxan spies. We arrived at the military building on the hour nearly sprinting to the conference room. As soon as we got there I noticed the Star Wolf team each in their own seats near General Pepper's.

"We have a problem that is to be discussed immediately between us only," General Pepper said sternly as Fara came in.

"You guys are dismissed," Fara proclaimed immediately. The Star Wolf team left immediately each with serious looks on their faces. We took a seat and after that General Pepper spoke.

"It seems the Claxan has made it's move already. Star Wolf has confirmed that there are indeed spies here in Corneria City."

"Then that could mean..." Peppy began.

"That they might even be in this building," Fara interrupted, "no one you know can be trusted. And we strongly advice that all things be kept in complete confidentiality." We all thought for a moment in the silence and I asked my thoughts.

"Could they be setting up for an attack?" I asked.

"It seems to be the case," Pepper began, "we've mobilized more defense in the skies and the ground. We also have set up a counterattack squadron. All we can do now is wait, and make sure that the president remains safe."

"If they attack," Fox began, "then the president becomes a prime target."

"They won't get him," I assured, "he's got Nordic backing him up. I've seen him fight, he can't lose." They stared at my confidence for a second and they nodded.

"Nordic is the president's best bodyguard," Pepper replied, "the president hand picked him himself."

"We're in for a tough one by the looks of it," Falco said.

"We'd best prepare," Slippy said.

"The question is when," Fox said looking deep in thought.

"Only time will tell," Fara said, "as long as we're waiting we have an important assignment for Krystal and Ryan."

"We're listening," Krystal said, but I already knew what it was.

"You want Krystal and I to look for the spies," I stated, "her telepathy is an excellent resource and my presence can help surface incriminating thoughts into the open."

"Exactly," Fara replied, "the assignment begins immediately for the two of you. Once your ready you'll head out across the city. We'll be expecting detailed reports daily on your endeavors."

"This is a problem of global security," Pepper said, "the Claxan are looking for the right time to strike. Let's find them before they hit their window of opportunity." We all saluted and filed out of the room one by one. Krystal and I headed out first while Fara and the rest of the team stayed behind. It looks like they were being given assignments.

"Where do we look first?" Krystal asked.

"Well..." I began and thought for a moment, "We could start by sweeping the building here. If they're here then this is one of the places they'll look." We both agreed and started looking. We explored around and picked the shooting range as our first spot to look. We stepped inside and I was hoping I could find Vincent here. Sadly to my disbelief he wasn't. I looked around for a bit, it was much busier than usual. Krystal took a step forward and grabbed my hand.

"If you hold on to my hand," Krystal began, "then you can read their minds like I can." She demonstrated by concentrating on a nearby ferret.

'C'mon, just two more to break my record,' I could hear the ferret's voice as clear as crystal. Only it was echoing from in my mind. So this was what it was like, to pierce into the thoughts of others without their knowing. We went through trying to read the other people's minds. The effort for suspicion was unsuccessful. Vincent came in just as we were leaving. Red, Kuro, Lucian, and Balze were with him.

"Ryan," Red began, "do you know what's going on?"

"Our watches have been tightened lately," Kuro started. I thought about telling them, but remembered Fara's orders.

"I can't say much but to keep your eyes open," I told them.

"We understand," Balze said.

"Good Luck," Lucian said. Krystal and I left the range and tried a bunch of other places. After a few hours we realized we didn't have anything to eat, so we headed towards the cafeteria. It was nearly empty save for Adair, Tri, DJ, Trevor, and Kayrin. DJ, Trevor, and Tri were completely asleep and Adair and Kayrin looked very close. We quickly grabbed some food and joined them at the table.

"You tired too Ryan?" Kayrin, "we've all been kept up the whole night on extended flight watch." Adair only nodded in agreement while Tri and DJ failed to stir. Their snoring was almost drowning out the conversation.

"Not really," I replied.

"We just have another assignment we're working on now but it's on the down low," Krystal followed.

"I see," Adair said and let out a huge yawn and plopped his head down. Krystal and I finished our food silently while we let the others sleep. They deserved it, I felt that they deserved to know the reason, but we couldn't risk letting someone unknowingly listening in who could be a spy. We tried a few more places after that. Including the mechanics station. There I found Robert, 8, and Kenji as usual. We only had enough time for a quick hello.

"What's up guys," I said as we walked in.

"Hi Ryan," Robert started, "I wish we could talk more but we've been kept here around the clock and we're extremely busy." The other two nodded in agreement.

"Do you know what's going on?" 8 asked.

"I'm not allowed to say," I replied.

"Just keep on your guard," Krystal asked. Kenji looked on for a few minutes suspiciously but nodded shortly afterwards.

"Good luck with you guys then," He said as he put his concentration back into their project. They were still working on the engine I saw from earlier but they had other parts scattered around the whole garage. I couldn't tell exactly what they were making, but I left because we had more important things to do. Before we could head anywhere else a nearby intercom turn on.

"Ryan, Krystal," It was General Pepper, "report to my office immediately." We nodded at each other and slowly made our way up several floors on the elevator to the general's office. As soon as we got in General Pepper was speaking to a large red dragon. He was leaving as we reached General Pepper's desk.

"Found out anything yet?" He asked.

"Not yet," Krystal replied, "we've searched everywhere in the building."

"Well that's enough for tonight," he said, "go get some rest. Our best fighters can't be sleepy if we get an invasion." Krystal and I turned around to head back when General Pepper stopped me.

"Ryan," he began, "I need a few more words with you." I turned around and nodded. I headed back to his desk as Krystal made way for the elevator.

"See you later Ryan," Krystal said. As I heard the elevator noise die down we began conversation.

"What's up?" I asked him concerned.

"Are you sure that you've inspected everyone here?" He asked.

"Yeah," I replied, "every last one that we encountered." He looked down at his desk deep in thought.

"If they're not here than it's possible that..." He didn't finish his sentence when we heard the elevator door open. We turned around to see Nordic in his robes walking right towards us. He wore an expression of seriousness on his face. He saluted the General and spoke his business.

"I apologize for barging in on this conversation, but the president demands to know what's going on. The other two guards are keeping watch while I come to collect the info. And he gave me orders not to leave until I find out what it is." General Pepper looked at him suspiciously.

"Very well," he said, "I guess I could tell you Nordic. Ryan already knows anyway but this is to remain confidential to us only until the time comes." Nordic looked on standing upright at attention. "We have reason to believe that the Claxan may be planning to attack us." Almost as if right on que, an alarm went off. The piercing buzzing sound was complimented by a huge set of flashing red lights. I looked around in confusion and alarm.

"What's going on?" I asked. General Pepper pressed a button on his desk.

"Control," he ordered, "status report." A female voice answered.

"We're being attacked," she said, "by an unknown fleet."

"Assemble the defense force," he said and turned off the button, "Nordic, the president. Ryan head down to the lobby and fend off attackers that enter there." We nodded and bolted for the elevator. There was a second one for emergencies just like this so we each took one to our destinations. By the time I got the enemy was already here. There were a group of soldiers, the ones I saw from my earlier mission. They were accompanied by robots. Large one that fired blasters at people. I ran right to them pulling out my two blasters and fired at a group. I hit the robot by two soldiers which exploded instantly. When the smoke cleared the two were in a crumpled heap dead where they laid. I turned around to the main entrance where more soldiers and robots were filing in from. I fired continuously at them. A few soldiers got by and fired at me. Quick with my reflexes I pulled out the ray shield from it's confinement and defended myself. The shots ricochet off of the shield and managed to hit some of them. They continued closing in so I switched and pulled out my sword. I've had plenty of practice with it now and I showed it by skillfully attacking each soldier. I found no end to these soldiers though. For everyone I managed to slay, another two seemed to take it's place. I was surrounded and I found myself breathing heavily. They all suddenly converged on me and I couldn't beat all of them, I heard a blaster whiz past me and smack through a group of enemy soldiers. I looked up to see the ranks quickly demolished by Fox, Falco, and Krystal. I joined them in the fight and we spoke while we clashed.

"Where's Peppy and Slippy?" I asked.

"Fending off attackers from their Arwings," Fox replied roundhouse kicking two soldiers into submission.

"We'll take this from here Ryan," Falco said, "get upstairs and help out the president. I have a feeling he'll need more than three guards."

"Good luck," Krystal said. I nodded and ran up a flight of stairs. It was there where I ran into Tri. What I saw though was amazing. There was not one, not two, but three Tri's ganging up on a robot. After the robot was defeated two of them disappeared. I ran up to Tri.

"What did you do?" I asked. Tri looked back at me and smiled.

"It's an ability I've been practicing with," he explained, "it allows me to split myself into three people. All three can fight and two of them disappear only after they've been hit. It's quite a useful skill." Another small group of soldiers attacked us and we defeated them quickly. Tri using his new powers to distract them while I cut them down. After that I remembered Falco's orders and sped away.

"Tri," I yelled back at him, "go assist Fox." I continued running until I got to an emergency elevator and slammed the button to the top floor.

Tri bolted down the stairs as fast as he could and found Fox and the others have taken care of the last group of soldiers.

"That's funny," Fox said, "no more are coming in."

"That's because now you have time with us," They heard an unfamiliar voice and turned around. There they saw a Rottweiler and a Dragon standing right behind them.

"The Claxan," Krystal said her staff up and ready.

"Correct," the dragon spoke, "allow us to introduce ourselves. We figure it's good to know the names of your killers. I am Draxor."

"I'm Mayson," the rottweiler said with a snarl to Krystal, "remember me from yesterday hoe?"

"How dare you call Krystal that," Fox said and turned on his accelerator. The rottweiler found himself flying twenty feet into the air and landed hard on his back. Fox jumped back and put up his dukes.

"He's roaring for a fight," Draxor said, "I'm game for one." Draxor pulled out his buster gunblade and pointed it right at Fox, who is now backed up by Krystal, Falco, and Tri. The rottweiler got up with a growl and slammed his fist into the ground causing a large shockwave that shook the building. The shockwave headed right for the group who dodged to four different directions.

I felt a shaking and a loud rumbling sound as I stumbled in the elevator. All of a sudden the elevator shuts down and the lights went off. I looked around in slight panic from the malfunctioning elevator, looking for a way out. I looked up to see the light display a red 42. I knew that floor. It was a hospital floor for wounded soldiers. I decided then to take a quick look. With a lot of effort I pried the elevator door open and ran out. Pandemonium was the only word to describe the condition of the place. Lots of battle damage done to the walls and various desks and tech and lights. Patients, Doctors, and Junior classmen running for their lives while our soldiers fended off the robots that attacked them. I began running when a group of robots quickly intercepted me. I pulled out my blaster and fired like crazy, shooting a dozen down before they began to overheat. I switched to my sword but was knocked down by a larger robot. About twice my size the robot converged on me. I thought it was over and held my hands over my face. I then heard a loud screeching of metal and felt a couple hands help me up. I looked onward to see Wolf trash the robot and the hands that helped me up was Leon. I saw Panther right behind him taking on two enemy soldiers with his blood red sword.

"Get upstairs," Wolf said, "now." I obeyed and decided to let them take care of things from here. I found another working elevator and head up it right away. Continuing my path up to the president's office.

Wolf, Panther, and Leon made quick work of the group of robots that converged around the place. When there weren't anymore they examined the place.

"My my," A female voice rung in the air, "you're quite talented." They turned around and noticed right before them were two females in black trench coats. One was a cheetah wielding a large knife. The other was a pitt bull carrying a whip.

"Hey there little ladies," Panther said flirtingly, "it's a little dangerous here for you. Why don't I give you some protection." The pitt bull snapped her whip right at his feet causing him to jump back a little.

"It's you who's going to need protection," The pittbull said, "from us."

"The Claxan," Leon said coldly.

"Correct," the cheetah said, "my name's Natoya."

"I'm Roxanne," the pitt bull said and they got into attack stances. The ladies quickly charged after that towards the Star Wolf team.

I felt another rumble and the elevator stopped again. This time on the 85th floor. The 80th floor on was mostly for the political stuff in the building. I got out to look around the hallway in front of me. It was completely deserted except for the group of enemy robot's scanning the hallway. These one were smaller and hovering seven feet into the air. As soon as they saw me they converged. I drew out my blasters which had cooled off by now and fired at them. They quickly dropped and I turned the corner. There I saw Nevlamas fending off a large group of robots with his large knives.

"NEV," I shouted at him and ran to his aid. He noticed me and slashed down three more robots with one slash and ran to my side. We then slashed down multiple robots repeatedly while making our way towards a side hallway. I turned my back for a second assisting Nevlamas who was ganged up by six more of them. I felt something slash on my right shoulder and that caused me to cringe in pain. Nevlamas spotted a door and shouted towards me.

"In here," I saw it and we bolted towards it at full tilt. We got into the other side and slammed the door behind us. Nevlamas held the door with one hand with the other inadvertently holding my wounded shoulder. I stepped away from him to look into the room. It was another long hallway, but the room was dark, save for the dim purple lights on the ceiling. I pulled out my map to look and found out where we were.

"These are prison cells," I said.

"This is the floor where we keep the Lylat system's most dangerous criminals," Nevlamas explained looking through the door. They were moved to planet MacBeth so that these guys couldn't break them out.

Nevlamas looked back at Ryan, who was looking the other way, for a second and held his hands up to his face. He cupped his hand over his mouth while he thought and noticed a familiar scent. One that brought nothing but trouble to him and his friends in the past. He looked at his hand suddenly in alarm and knew what it was. Blood. He looked up at Ryan and noticed his shoulder was bleeding. The scent and the sight had pushed him over the edge and his instinct began taking over.

"Not again he said to himself" His breathing became heavy and he started inhaling the scent in. He wanted more of it, he wanted blood.

I heard a growling behind me. I paused and turned around slowly to see Nevlamas growling. He looked at me with an evil snarl. There was a look of total lust in his eyes as he looked at me. What was going on? Why is he looking at me like that? All these thoughts rose in my head when I noticed the blood on Nev's hand. I then remembered the wound on my shoulder and I looked at it as blood slowly trickled down my arm. I looked up and he charged.

"BLOOOOOOOOD," He shouted in a blood curling voice. He lost his mind. I panicked at the sight and bolted down the hallway. There's no way I could take on a berserk lizard who was larger than me. But why is he doing this. Why does he want my blood so badly? How could he be acting this way. I looked back to see him almost caught up to me right there, he was faster as well as stronger. I brought up my shield as he struck. He thrashed and lashed at it in wild passion. I felt the raw force push against it and saw the shield get weaker with each blast. I was washed in total fear now. One blow was so powerful that he broke the shield and sent me backwards across the ground several feet. I was still standing and looked fear stricken at the raging beast. Whoever this beast was had taken over Nevlamas. He charged again and in thoughtful instinct I turned on the accelerator. I blasted down the hallway at a fast speed. I looked back to see him charging at full tilt. He was charging wildly on all fours now and I could here his ravenous snarlings and breathing as he charged.

"I want your blood," He yelled hysterically, "give me your blood." My running was gaining distance from the red scaled lizard but not enough. I felt my energy slowly drain away and I turned down another hallway. Bad choice, I wound up hitting right into a room of crates with no way out. I hit a dead end. I switched off my accelerator and turned around. Nevlamas ran right towards me with both claws in the air. I quickly drew my sword, I had to defend myself. All I could do was hold it in front of me while Nevlamas batters it repeatedly. Every jerking strike hurt my hands more and more and he weakened me to the point where he knocked it away. I was forced backwards as he jumped and with two strikes he landed one on my left arm and the other on my stomach. I could feel the blood flowing out of my body and I collapsed in pain. I looked up at him as he licked the blood off of his claws and grin.

"More, I want more," he snarled and rushed at me again. I shut my eyes as I felt it was about to end for me. Just then I felt a searing heat across my face and I hurt a blood curling screaming. I looked up as Nevlamas was on the ground not moving, and saw Nordic approach, his fire tornado had connected with Nev right on and knocked him off his feet. Then from behind Nordic, Vincent ran right up to me.

"Ryan," he yelled, "you okay?"

"I'm fine," I said staggering up to my feet, "thanks."

"Drink this," Nordic said handing me a green bottle, "this'll heal your wounds and seal them off to." I thanked him and chugged the whole bottle in a matter of seconds. Vincent ran over to Nevlamas as I felt the pain go away. I looked down at my wounds to see that no more blood was flowing out of the wounds. They were still their and it hurt like hell. But I was well enough to move again.

"Nev is unconscious," he said, "I'll keep an eye on him here. It's better he stay out of the rest of the fight in case he falls under the influence again."

"Does he have some kind of Blood lust or something?" I asked.

"The Black Rage," Nordic corrected, "he goes berserk whenever he smells, tastes, and sometimes sees blood. Good thinking Vincent, please keep an eye on him. Ryan come with me, the elevators are all busted so we have to run the other 15 floors to the president's office. He's in danger and I fear for his other guards." I nodded and we bolted off. I waved at Vincent and picked up my sword as we left. We tackled through a few waves of robots, but it looks like their aren't really any signs of live enemy soldiers around. We ran up flights of stairs after flights of stairs. By the time we reached the top floor I got really sick of stairs. We busted through some large double doors leading into the extremely large office of the president. About 30 feet in front of us was none other than Cougar. His blue electric aura circling around him. He looked on towards the large bear about ten feet in front of him. The president was backed up to the wall, with his other two guards, a horse and a lion lie dead at Cougar's feet. Cougar turned to face us.

"Ryan," he chuckled, "good to see you again. How's your health?"

"Better than what you'll be in pretty soon," I shouted. Nordic ran to the president's aid. Both of his katanas held up in defense, with their auras glowing ferociously. The president took off by a door, it led to his large launch pad visible from the large window behind his desk. A ship was waiting for him and he climbed in assisted by Fara and General Pepper. I saw the ship take off shortly after leaving Nordic, Cougar, and myself in the office.

"So I missed my chance with the president," Cougar said disappointingly, "you'll be just as good then Ryan." Immediately after that he thrusts a big bolt right at me. I drew my sword and thrust my shield out. The bolt was absorbed into it and then the device exploded. I felt the blast hit my hip as the device was completely spent. Nordic and I nodded to each other and charged. He reached into his pocket and drew out a weapon from out of nowhere. It was a 4 foot katana. However it was different for the main reason of having three blades. We charged him with a barrage of blades which he easily parried with the blade holding it backhanded and with one hand. The other hand came up with a large blue fire bolt which he cast right at us. We split avoiding the ferocious explosion and charged again. With a flash of light he speed right at me, his feet not touching the ground as if flying right at me. He pushed me back with his free hand and threw a few skilled attacks of his own, I managed to block quite a few but even my new found skill wasn't a match for him and with a swift kick he nailed me right in the stomach. He included a blast in the kick which sent me flying. I felt myself go right through the glass of the window as it shattered. I covered my face from the shower of shards as I hit the ground of the president's private launch pad hard. I looked up as Nordic jumped right to my side and helped me up. Cougar floated down slowly right from the air in front of us. He put his triple bladed katana away and charged up his hands of his blue aura.

"Prepare to die gentlemen," Cougar said calmly. He thrust several small bolts right at us. Nordic easily knocked them aside and charged up his own weapons.

"Firamatsume, Miratsume," Nordic said, "don't fail me now. Ryan stay back." I did so and stepped back several feet. He concentrated with all of his might and conjured a large swirling tornado of fire from his fire blade. He thrust his left arm holding the blade forward causing a large burst of flame flying forward in a smooth and elegant flow. Cougar smiled and held up his hand, the flame stopped and spread apart just a couple of feet from his face. He stood there unfazed as the flames died down. Nordic concentrated again and formed a large six foot spire of ice over his head with his ice blade. With a thrust of his right arm, the spire flew right to him. Cougar held up both hands and spun around. The spire flew right around the cougar and the direction shifted. Now the spire flew in the opposite direction right towards Nordic. Before he could do anything the spire flew right past him just missing his left side. There was a large piercing sound and Nordic turned to see what it was.

I was caught off guard as I felt a force push me back near the edge of the platform. A numbness claimed the feeling of my right arm as it slowly became encased in pain. I slowly looked towards it felling the weight of the large ice spire that pierced through my right shoulder, just inches from the chest. But I knew the full extent of the damage. Time seemed to slow down tremendously as I could hear my heart beating and pumping my adrenaline. The ice spire hit me and was driven through me, about half of it sticking out from behind me. I looked forward to see Nordic runs towards me with a horrified look on his face. I could hear him shout just over Cougar's cruel laughing and I lost my balance. The ground was not there as I plummeted off of the edge, looking up to see Nordic look over the edge, his arm extended out trying to reach for me. Everything slowly went black through the fall the only thing I could hear was Nordic's yelling.

"Ryan Nooooooooooooooooo," was the last thing I heard as I collapsed toward the ground.
