Chapter 1 - The Encounter

Nobody ever said life was easy, and it sure as hell isn't fair. My entire life has been about fighting, and struggling to survive; well at least what I can remember of it.

See when I was a little bit younger, about 15, my class mates and I went on a regular school field trip. It was like all trips, we packed our stuff for the night we were spending at the location, and we boarded a school bus. After that night nothing has been the same, apart from being stuck in a thirteen or fourteen year olds body, we were experimented on, contaminated, used, by Joey, a boy who we thought of as a friend. The final product of his procedures and sick mind... his own species, one that belongs in a category all to its own. The Morphs... us... regular kids now fighting, doing our best to either be slaves under Joey, or join the military and do something a little better. Either way, we're not free, we don't have our own lives, only heartache and suffering; Alex... Spencer... my best friends taken by our own kind. Now I roam, I've become a captain, though my military rank far surpasses that position, placed here a threat to the enemy. The military hoping that the enemy would stop trying to board our ships knowing that morphs we're aboard. However, my only real goal is to stop Joey and keep him from ruining any body else's life. No one should ever have to face what we have, and once he's gone, we can rest easy, and attempt to return to what we have left to call a life. - Skye Age 17 Species: morph.

Skye awoke with a start, the sounds of alarms ringing in around him, as smoke began gripping his lung, and the all too familiar taste of his own blood swimming around in his mouth.

Shaking his head Skye managed to get to his feet, stumbling back into the captain's chair "Report!" he shouted.

"Sir, we've just been hit with a salvo of class-1 Flame Birds, they must have gathered them from a few rogue ships, they've been out of service since 2000. Anyways they punctured through our weakened shields and struck the fore end of this deck head-on," Lieutenant Crystal replied.

"Are you okay captain?" Claire, the ships AI asked appearing in front of the captain's chair.

"Yeah I'll survive," Skye replied wiping a trickle of blood from his face.

"Charge our remaining plasma batteries to maximum, fire when ready Lieutenant." Skye commanded.

The side of the HIRO B-872 class war ship glowed a dim red as clouds of plasma formed around the massive electrical capacitors. The cannons finished charging, as the fire command appeared on the control panel.

"Firing." Crystal warned, as 6 beams of superheated plasma burst from the magnets arcing across space, finding their targets, and exploding into plumes of super heated gasses and metal alloy.

"Six targets successfully destroyed captain, but the other three frigate ships are closing in fast, ETA until firing distance... two minutes." Crystal warned as the smoke was vented from the bridge.

"Sir," a woman sitting at the environmental controls panel spoke up.

"Yes Sara," Skye replied.

"We've successfully vented all fumes from fires and put the fires on decks 12-19 out, the rest have been vented.

"Good job," Skye replied, nodding in appreciation to her, "Crystal, charge our next salvo of plasma and use the nuclear tipped Phoenix Downs we brought from delta-six cluster as well."

"Sir!" she snapped, arming the weapons sequences and gathering firing data. "Ships are within firing range, they're charging plasma." Crystal warned.

"Fire," Skye commanded, watching the main display of the battle field as six more columns of superheated particles darted from the Hiro, along with twenty small nuclear warheads each tipped with plutonium.

Almost every shot made it through the enemies point defense lasers, the warheads and plasma flew directly into their shields detonating. The explosions caused the shields to shimmer gold and collapse in on themselves, allowing the plasma to land successfully on their hull, which shimmered white hot as it bubbled through the platinum/titanium hull. The ships then literally exploded once a few plasma batteries were caught in the explosions.

"Three confirmed kills sir." Crystal smiled.

"Sir, I'm reading multiple slipstream events, sixteen ships have just dropped out." Martin, the slip space pilot scowled.

"There's no way we can fight off that many at once." Skye grimaced, "Plot us a course out of the system."

I hated myself for running but I kept thinking in my head, "He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day."

Skye ran his fingers through his brown and thinly blond streaked eyebrow length hair.

"Slip space portal is open," Martin replied. The massive monitor on the front of the wall showed a bright white circle with beams of twisting light occasionally snapping about inside.

"Take us in." Skye commanded, "and lower us from battle stations."

"Aye" Martin turned around pressing a few buttons on the command console in front of him. The acid blue lighting on the bridge went back to the regular cool amber.

Slip space was like a cakewalk compared to the fight that they Hiro and crew had just fought. The only exception was that the crew always seemed happier in slip space as no weapons can be fired at them here, because of the unique gravity it holds.

Not too long after they had entered Slip space had Captain Skye walked into his quarters and hopped into the shower. He grunted as the water ran across his newly acquired burns and gashes, caused by the operations panel exploding into a flurry of sparks when the ship had received that direct blow. The fight with the Draconian's was short, but still caused the ship some undue stress and wear on the crew, as they worked to fix the ship's hull.

Though his wounds had already begun to heal, Skye couldn't help but feel the once unbearable stinging sensation as his skin rapidly closed; where the gashes that normally would have required stitches healed seamlessly, the burns fading away from his skin.

"This is ridicules, a 17 year old as the captain of a warship." Skye thought to himself. "I mean sure its cool but at what cost is the military looking at by allowing such inexperienced pilots command these new warships, I'm a tank on the ground, but in space I feel so useless."

"Sure it was because I've been augmented by Joey, that I got placed here in this job, my bones and muscles tissues have been strengthened a ten fold, but no matter how much they can weight out the stats and statistics they always seem to miss a couple, our bones can still be crushed, our bodies beaten, we can still die." Skye thought to himself.

Finishing his shower, Skye walked back down the corridor to the bridge, dressed in his command uniform.

"Captain on deck!" Sara shouted, causing all of the personnel on the deck to quickly stand up and snap a crisp salute.

"At ease." Skye grumbled.

They all fell back to their seats and continued work.

"Alright guys, I'm calling for a mandatory break, you guys need some sleep, I'll call in the swing shift." Skye smiled as they filed out.

A few minutes later the swing shift walked onto the bridge looking as if they we're as happy to see it as they were when they were forced to leave Earth.

"We're ok captain." One man saluted as he got into his chair in front of the navigations computer.

"Dropping out of slipspace in 30 seconds." Williams announced.

"Good, the sooner the better." A tall woman grunted.

"What's the matter Kyla?" Skye asked.

"It's... It's nothing." She buried her face behind the computer monitor.

Space in front of them twisted and shimmered silver as it opened back up into the darkness of space.

"We're clear of the slipspace field." Williams announced.

There was a sudden explosion across the main shield of the ship, followed by a second explosion as the second wave of plasma splashed across the bow of the ship.

"Detecting multiple enemy contacts and several dropping out of slipspace fields surrounding us." Williams grimaced.

"Attack, back send out everything we've got," I commanded, "Is there a chance we can make it to the next slipspace opening?"

"No Sir, we're completely blocked off." Kyla replied.

Another few explosions signaled three more successful salvos had hit the ship.

"Sir, we've destroyed six contacts, but more just keep coming." Williams warned.

"They're flanking us." William's warned.

Another explosion rocked the ship as shockwaves rippled across the warship.

"They've destroyed our main thrusters, the engines are going critical," Kyla reported.

"Re-route the power to plasma cannons, fire at will," Skye ordered.

"The Draconian have never been this smart, and thought out when it comes out to attacks." I replied.

"Sir, detecting a massive slipspace event, the ship is over 5KM wide and 30 long." Williams almost cried.

"It's not Draconian," I exclaimed looking at the ship, which looked more like a huge version of the original Cassiopean ships, which were then only small warships, but they packed a punch.

"What is it?" Skye echoed in his mind, as the light from the nearest sun was blocked out by the ships size.
