A human fresh from saving the Netherdrakes in Outland, Thomas Alarriot of Stormwind had gained a new mount. This was Suraku the Cobalt Netherdrake. Despite being his mount to carry him in the winds of Outland, Suraku's relationship is more than a just a beast of burden to his master, it's one of companionship. And soon Thomas learns what being a companion to your mount is soon to be about. In two parts.

Thomas Alarriot of Stormwind was one adventurous man. He grew up in Goldshire out in Stormwind's Elwynn Forest. He had such a life growing up. He had two wonderful grandparents, two sisters, and three brothers. He spent his years catching frogs and grassjumpers. He had a normal life, nothing out of the ordinary. Like all of his siblings, he was born at home.

He was in the middle, and so there wasn't much left of an inheritance. After all, his family had to reserve some money for the dowry. He was expected to become a priest in the Church of the Holy Light, but Thomas didn't want any of that. So he started training with a sword at a young age, learning anything about swordsmanship. He had a wooden sword made and started bashing trees when he was ten years old.

When the Stormwind legions had gone elsewhere, Thomas was of age when he found a swordsmaster. The swordsmaster, Argent Sallowwind, taught him everything he needed to know. In time, Thomas had become a competent swordsman. He soon found himself having adventures from Duskwood and the Redridge Mountains to Winterspring and Felwood. Somewhere in there, he had fallen in love with his own angel -- the human woman Carly Talford.

They were so much in love that he carried his locket everywhere as he fought the forsaken in the Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch. When the Dark Portal called, he entered Outland, promising Carly that he will come back. They both promised that they would marry each other, and he rode into the Dark Portal like some man riding into the sunset.

His adventures had taken him across the Hellfire Pennisula, into Zangramarsh, Nagrand, and Archindoon. He fought many creatures, from gronn to warp beasts, to ogres and marsh giants. However, everything changed when he completed the quests and gained exalted fame with the Netherwing Dragonflight. He returned to Shattrath to learn that the Netherwing Drakes would be willing to let him ride one. But he had to choose one.

He looked at the dragons very carefully. Each one had brilliant colors being translucent. The nether drakes had heads that resembled a shark, and a tail on the end. Their bodies were partly physical, and partly non-physical. They had what seemed to be smooth skin, and if you rubbed your hand along their bodies you could feel the scales. They just weren't obvious. All of them: Malfas, Jorus, Onyxien, Suraku, Voranaku, and Zoya said basically the same things.

Thomas turned to Suraku. "So, you have the same thing, right? If I choose you as my compatriot you will allow me to ride you?"

"It is an honor," Suraku said. His blue body glowing with the stuff of the twisting nether and the luminiferous aether. "I will fly you to the ends of the world and back. This was the promise made to you of all six of us. My four brothers, and my sister."

"Hmm, I've always liked the color blue," he said to Suraku. "I will choose you as my compatriot. Barthamus, I'll take Suraku."

"Take care of my child," he said. He regarded the six drakes as his daughter and sons. He gave him the reigns to Suraku and his saddle. "And he will be loyal." Thomas, the savior of the Netherwing Dragonflight, only could solemnly nod. He saddled up Suraku and had him wear the reigns. With his cobalt, glowing blue eyes, Suraku was surprised as the human swordsman mounted him on his back.

"Here we go," said Suraku. "Are you comfortable?"

"Yes," said Thomas.

Suraku jumped into the air and was flapping. In no time they gained altitude and flew away from Shattrath. Barthamus had to hold back a tear. One of his children was flying away. He waved as he waited for other heroes to claim his drakes.

Thomas had felt a rush, with the wind flowing past his hair and the beauty of sitting on a tamed companion who could fly, it was wonderful! The adventures in Shattrath and outland was nothing compared to flying. "Wait, a second," said Thomas, "Fly back to my barracks in Allerian Stronghold."

"What do you mean, hero?" Suraku asked.

"My name is Thomas, you can call me Thomas," Thomas said.

Suraku said, "Right, Thomas."

The pair flew to Allerian Stronghold. The dragon asked, "What is so important that you have to go to that particular stronghold?"

"Simple, Suraku, I want to experience this without armor on," said Thomas. "In Nagrand."

"Ahh, why is that?" he asked.

"I think it would be fun."

"Oh," said Suraku. Holding the reigns, he guided the dragon to Allerian Hold. The keep was built with stone buildings and many High Elven towers rose above the walls, along with human castled towers. Suraku was surprised by the sight.

"Ho, man on a Nether drake approaches!" said one of the lookouts.

"Is he man or orc, or forsaken, or dwarf?" came a call back.

"He is man!"

"Let me land safely, Higgins!" Thomas said.

"Very well, you are cleared to land, Thomas! I hope you found everything all right in your room in the barracks!" called back Higgins.

Thomas guided Suraku down, and the two landed in the courtyard of the Hold. The hold was held by the Alliance, built by high elves who came over to help the humans during the Second War with the Orcish Horde. The reasons were simple, to seal the portal. However, things had changed in the ten years after the founding of Durotar. The problems with the Burning Legion was so great that the portal had to be opened again. Thomas went through, to serve his king. Now, his adventures had wearied him. He wanted to return home and begin the family that he always wanted with Carly. He looked over the landscape with a sigh.

When Suraku touched the ground and settled, Higgins approached him. "Good work, Thomas, on your adventures."

"Yeah, yeah," he said, dismounting from his new mount. People approached Suraku and took the reigns. Suraku roared in confusion. People were leading him somewhere, away from his companion?

"Suraku, wait, they are going to take you somewhere safe," said Thomas.

"Safe?" he asked.

"Yes, safe. To a stable," he said.

"Near where you sleep?" Suraku asked.

Thomas nodded, and Suraku also nodded and finally obeyed. They took the drake to a stable. The stable was full of hay, and two horses -- Thomas' riding horse and his Palfrey charger. He looked at the room and saw Thomas' silhouette as he removed his armor, then his shirt, and down to his small clothes. Night gripped Outland as the fire went out.

Thomas changed out of his armor by firelight. It took a long time to remove his armor. But he was a tough adventurer that afforded the best. Off went the gauntlets and off went the paldrons. He then removed the sabatons -- the steel boots -- of his armor, and then proceeded to untie his greaves. Free of his greaves, he removed his breastplate and was down to his clothes he wore underneith. Stinking of sweat, soil, and even blood, he removed these clothes and checked his wounds he received in battle. His body had seven wounds on them, things that made him look distinguished while fighting the Scourge in the plaguelands and other enemies in other places. The scars were still there, each with a battle to tell.

He he put each of the clothes he wore under his armor into the basket marked "laundry" and climbed into bed. He then blew out the candlelight. In this world, there were no clocks, and no decisions to stay up late. It was night time, and it was time to go to bed and reflect on the day. However, saving the Netherwing drakes was tiring process. He had to kill the man enslaving them, a fell orc that could have given him another scar, or made him buy the farm entirely. He turned and tossed in the covers, his slim hard body sweating with the dreams of what he did each night. Killing fel orcs that kept Magtheridon, killing a fel orc of Illidian Stormrage. Everything was coming back to him in his dreams. He found Carly asking him to return to Elwynn so they could raise a family, then he saw a man in black armor raise a hoarfrost sword and slay Carly. Suddenly he was awake in the dark.

"What, what happened?" he asked himself. He looked around and found himself in his own room, and the clouds of Outland flowing across the Nether sky. "It was, just a dream. Just a dream."

He heard scratching near his window, and he looked outside, finding Suraku climbing up. The dragon was naked, with out his saddle or reins. "Can I come in?"

"I don't know if there is enough room for you," said Thomas.

Suraku said, "I heard you call out, and I wanted to know if you needed anything."

Thomas had a thought of Carly. If only she came with him, and be safe with him, the dream wouldn't have happened. "Uh, I don't think so."

"You cried out into the night loudly," said Suraku. "I say you need someone. After all, you were yelling loud enough to wake the dead."

Thomas considered this, and said, "Alright, if you insist."

The dragon climbed up and entered his room with some difficulty. It was mostly his wings. He had to fold them over his back before he could squeeze through. Suraku was fully in, and he looked around the room. "Very quaint, hmm, oh, is that what you look like with out your things on?"

Thomas looked at Suraku in the eyes and said, "yes, this is what I look like, naked." Thomas then turned to the bed, lifted up the covers, and then climbed into it.

"I think it will be better if I got into bed with you," said Suraku.

"Don't be funny," said Thomas.

"No, I'm really serious," said Suraku.

"Suraku," said Thomas.

"Yes?"

"Go back to the stable."

Suraku didn't like that one minute and then he was on the bed without the covers. "What are you doing?" said Thomas.

"I'm your companion," said Suraku. "It's my job to make sure you're safe."

"By climbing into bed with me?" said Thomas. "It's not like I married you."

"Married? Oh, you mean joining then," Suraku said. "Well, it's something like that."

"What?" asked Thomas.

Suraku laid on the bed, his tail hanging over the bed posts and frame. "Just for tonight, please?"

Thomas grunted, like an orc, and pulled the covers over both of them. He then relaxed, moving when Suraku was against his chest. Suraku moved his claws over Thomas in a light hug, and then held him as he slept with his new companion.
