Saw some very good Xerneas fan art depicting the legendary as a realistic cervine creature. Got inspired and spent a few hours typing and editing my first Pokemon fan-fiction.

It covers the end of the Team Flare, your usual pokemon game criminal organization, storyline. So spoilers abound and as the title suggests, deals with the relationship between a young trainer and a god-like pokemon, this story covers their first meeting and the friendship that emerges.

To Love a Legendary Pokemon

Pokemon X fan fiction, my first Pokemon fan fiction. Having come to love the game, I decided to write a short story in two parts. Part one is the set up with SPOILERS for the Team Flare ending portion of the game. The other is the romance portion. Though each story is independent of each other and you do not have to read the first part to enjoy either or.

A large majestic beast marched steadily along the narrow paths of a mountain that rose into the heavens South of a small village. On its back sat a figure wearing a light blue hood over dark clothing and matching boots. At his side was a bag, slung over a shoulder by a single strap.

The rider was gently holding onto the creature by its neck. The pair paused briefly on an outcropping of rock at the silent beckoning of the rider. Pulling back his hood to reveal his short black hair, small framed eyeglasses, and slightly androgynous features. The rider, known as Leonarte and current Kalos Pokémon Champion, scanned the scene before him.

The sun was still high in the sky, revealing the glory that was Kalos. It was there that Leonarte had met his friend and current means of mountainous transportation.

The majestic Xerneas.

It was a legendary beast that was a beauty to behold. Currently the life giving Pokémon was in its neutral or resting state. Having no need to expend energy beyond moving and feeding. Its eight horns were a work of art to its young rider. Currently the antlers were a pale blue and not the shining force of power when actively charged with the life giver's power.

He looked down over the town he had come to call home briefly before being swept up within the world of Pokémon training. His mother Grace was an accomplished Rhyhorn racer, renowned worldwide for her talents. Though he did love riding on it when he was younger. Sitting astride Xerneas reminded him of those days. Her skill in handling the beasts was something that he thought he would never have a gift for.

What he did have a talent for was bringing out the best in his Pokémon. For his compatibility with the creatures caused them to work harder at training when with him. Even the Lucario that he had received from Korrina sensed it. And the two, as Pokémon and trainer, drilled dutifully before their battles with other trainers and wild Pokémon to bring it to the surface bit by bit.

This ability he later learned was called Aura. And Xerneas and the other Pokémon benefited from Leonarte's growing usage of it. It had other usages as well, but Leonarte mostly used it to empower and communicate with his Pokemon.

Without his power things may have turned out differently when they confronted Team Flare's leader and met Xerneas. Leonarte thought back to the battle against Xerneas at Team Flare's HQ. And how after that everything truly changed for him.

***

T he fiercest fight of Leonarte's life up until that point had been with gym leaders. Fights he had not prepared properly for before hand. But won thanks to tactics and the strength of his Pokemon. And yet there he was, standing before a tree that suddenly shifted and changed until standing before him was the tallest and possibly mightiest Pokémon he had ever laid eyes upon.

Xerneas.

The whole room where Xerneas rested shook. As it finished reviving it began drawing energy into itself. Bright light showered the Pokémon trainer as Xerneas entered its active combat state. Leonarte partially shielded his eyes as he watched the creature let out a loud cry heralding its full awakening.

Leonarte took a step back to steady himself as Xerneas formerly dark blue antlers were suddenly glowing and adorned with rainbow colored protrusions. Its back lit up with brightly colored spots as its cross shaped eyes drilled into Leonarte's own.

Leonarte instinctively summoned his battle party to his side with the quick draw Pokéball technique he had studied. After being ambushed in the wild with no Pokémon out to protect him; the event had left him with a scar from a Zangoose's slash on his lower back. So with a flourish six mighty creatures appeared in a flash of light to gaze upon nine plus feet of power, might, and possible fury. All except one dared not to make the first move in the battle to come.

Lucario, always faithful and reassuring with his courage, stepped in front of Leonarte to take on the life giving Pokémon first. Its martial arts faced off against the dazzling power of the fairy type. A hand to hand fighter fighting a magician in Leonarte's eyes.

He watched as it did not end well for Lucario. Xerneas was an unknown, Leonarte and his battle party knew it was holding back even as Lucario worked it over. Though Lucario's attacks did do damage from the sheer output of power coming from its being. Its overwhelming aura blasts dazed Xerneas, but ultimately it could not stand against the power of one of the Kalos region's reigning gods of legend.

Leonarte rushed to Lucario's side as he fell to one knee in shock, pain, and shame at disappointing the boy trainer. Leonarte sprayed his friend down with a healing potion and watched as Delphox drew its wand from its robe like fur.

She gazed at Leonarte with trust in her eyes as she unleashed her signature attack. The ring of fire that formed as she twirled her wand before her exploded outward as she blew air towards it. The whole event appeared as if she had been uttering an incantation to summon flame.

Leonarte could not help but smile as Delphox showed off her stuff. She was his first Pokémon, chosen from a set of three pokéballs. A gift from the region's Pokémon Professor, an expert among experts on all things Pokémon, Augustine Sycamore.

Xerneas took the fire attack head on by lowering its antlers and shaking them back and forth rapidly. Leonarte watched the explosive ring of flame collide with the awesome rack and vanish. Delphox cocked her head to the side as she brought one of her paws up to her muzzle and scratched it nervously.

Xerneas, looking as if it were laughing inwardly at the display of flame, summoned pillars and rings of light from the ground around it. As the beams faded, the majestic Pokémon stood stock still, as if focusing on something.

"It's gathering power! Hit it with a Fireblast!" Leonarte shouted aloud causing his team to look at the normally reserved boy with some worry.

Was he becoming unhinged by the fury of the Pokémon they faced? Fearful that his battle party could not stand up to the might of the Dweller of The Forest, The Giver of Life, Granter of Eternal Life, Xerneas itself?

No.

Leonarte was stronger than that, he was just shouting battle strategy as a way to snap the fox wizard Pokémon out of her reverie.

"Exploit that opening!" Leonarte cast a glance towards Talonflame as he spoke. The bird was twitching, getting itself ready to take off and attack as he issued orders to Delphox. "This fight will continue to be one on one; either we fall or Xeneas falls!" Leonarte pointed at Xerneas and locked eyes with it. "And we will_never_fall to you! Not while Team Flare exsists! Not while that selfish redmanedbastard," Leonarte ignored the looks his Pokémon gave him at his strong language. " Wishes to kill all Pokémon with this very weapon we stand beneath!"

Delphox's wand whipped forward, creating the gestures needed to create the attack ordered by its trainer. Flames shot towards Xerneas as it stood its ground, summoning strength to itself. But it was for naught, unable to block the large burst of flame with its antlers, Xerneas took the attack full force.

"Follow up with Psychic!" Leonarte shouted as he clenched his right hand into a tight fist.

Delphox performed the attack with its wand, strange rays of energy focused though the stick buffeted Xerneas. There was no visible effect but Leonarte knew Xerneas was still injured from taking hits from Lucario.

Finally Xerneas was finished summoning power. Rings of light swirled beneath its blade-like hooves. The collected power erupted from the ground to bathe its form with rainbow hued light and increasing its radiant aura even more.

The Pokémon trainer called Delphox back from the front and sent Sylveon a silent command to stride forward. Taking her place before the assembled battle party Sylveon let out a cute reassuring cry and locked eyes with Xerneas.

Xerneas quickly began to summon a large sphere of energy over its massive rack. The pale rays of light coming from it reminded Leonarte of moonbeams. Leonarte felt the command leave his lips before he consciously thought it.

"Counter with your own Moonblast Sylvie!"

Sylveon's ribbons fluttered as she focused and created her own sphere of energy overhead. Leonarte watched as Xerneas seemingly smirked, its stance becoming slightly relaxed as it felt no threat from the smaller Pokémon's version of the attack it was using.

Sylveon winced as she put more effort into channeling power into the fairy type attack. She kept the sphere aloft through dedication to her trainer however. Releasing her hold on the energy would funnel the power into her; forcing her to form an attack from it and hurl it with her will at the legendary Pokémon.

"Keep channeling power!"

Leonarte held his hands aloft pointed towards the sphere of light forming over his Pokémon. A light blue sphere appeared in the palms of each of his hands. This did not go unnoticed by Xerneas whom recognized _that_particular ability.

Well, we certainly expected you to be an amateur when it comes to using that power. But can you really focus enough to combine its energy with that of the minor nuisance standing before me? Xerneas's voice rang true in the minds of the team before it. It sounded bored, almost as if it knew it would not lose. Adangerous gift you have human, tell us, do you still think you can defeat us?

Leonarte felt anger well up inside of him, his team sensed it, Xerneas certainly sensed it. He bit his lower lip as he focused on the sphere. Something inside of him instinctively told him to aim his palms at the sphere. He felt power flowing through his body, but not leaving it just yet.

Sylveon felt a headache begin at the front of its skull as it continued to focus hard on maintaining the power it was pooling. This next blow would be the last she could muster. Then it would come down to the others finishing the job. Even if her effort was just a step towards victory, still, she was glad to be apart of Leonarte's team.

"Now!" Leonarte released his hold on the power he gathered and felt it surge into the sphere of special energies Sylveon had collected. Instead of its pink hue it became a slightly dark purple. The sphere of power slammed into Sylveon from above flattening her. She struggled to her belly under the weight of the power as Xerneas glared and collected its summoned power as well.

Now show us what thy power combined is!

"Tear that bitch, and or bastard, a new one Sylvie!" Leonarte cheered as a wild look came over him.

Lucario smirked as his trainer cursed their foe. Not out of anger, but out of support for their teammate.

"Sylveon!" Sylveon got onto her feet proudly shouting as she fired her attack at Xerneas.

Xerneas dug in its pointed hooves and fired back. The two spheres of energy approached each other and bounced off of one another.

A cancellation!

Leonarte dived to the ground covering his nearest teammates as best he could with his body. A the ricocheted attacks slammed into the walls of the chamber. The dust that showered them was all that landed upon them as the chamber held.

Rising slowly to his feet the human found Xerneas kneeling before him and his party in a slight bow.

We humbly request membership with your party. We accept that in this world, a human such as you would make life more interesting. If not more vulgar.

Leonarte did not blush at the statement about his language. He instead reached into his black bag to grasp an empty Pokéball. Expanding it within his hand he approached Xerneas.

"Rise." Leonarte commanded. "Today we are friends, not quite equals, not quite pet and owner. Just friends."

Xerneas lifted its head and felt the sphere held by the human, its human, brush the side of its face.

For the record mortal, thy would be our pet if we were not simply friends.

Leonarte laughed at the silent words and patted Xerneas on its head before it rose with majesty to its full height.

That was when Lysandre walked in, the leader of Team Flare, wearing mechanical equipment and what appeared to be a mega ring worn upon his finger. Similar to the one worn around Leonarte's wrist. It was then that Leonarte wondered why he had not used Lucario's Mega powers during the previous fight. It was then he knew he was not fully in sync with his Pokémon team. Synchronizing with them was key to bringing out their full power and Mega Evolution.

"What a surprising development!" Sanders began to say as he stood before the newly minted partnership between god and mortal. "I never would've thought you were really a chosen one!"

Despite what had happened to his plans so far. Lysandre appeared to still have his stately tone when speaking.

"The battle I witnessed proves that you have it. Exactly what it takes to command a legendary Pokémon. All that power in a young child." Lysandre stared at Leonarte for a moment longer before speaking again. "Aura, that power you wield is called Aura. Those who become masters of legendary Pokémon are said to have it. Sometimes it is trained, honed, turned into a proper tool. You just use it as naturally as breathing. You have been able to communicate without words with your Pokémon since the start right? Many battles observed by my spies have witnessed you simply gesturing during a fight. Your Pokémon reacting and unleashing attacks without you saying a word aloud. Fascinating."

Leonarte glared at Lysandre. He silently instructed his team to be ready for anything from the genocidal leader of Team Flare.

"Now with I having donned this energy draining equipment I call The Lysandre Machine; I can see your Aura power vibrate slightly as you use it. Even now you are instructing your team in the finer points of combat without telling your foe your next move!" Lysandre laughed then, his shoulders shaking. "You have had an advantage from the start of your journey! Born with a gift that I wonder if your mother shares as well? Something to wonder about another time after I cleanse this world of foolish humans!"

Lysandre's words made Xerneas bristle and glare at the red haired human. It looked knowingly at Leonarte who nodded and motioned for the others in his battle party to get out of the way.

Looking at the three meter tall Pokémon made Lysandre shake his head dismissively.

"So THIS is the mighty Xerneas?" Lysandre ignored the growl the Pokémon made as he insulted it with his tone. "I will claim your power easily enough once he is disposed of." Lysandre said while gesturing towards Leonarte. "I expected more from a Pokémon called a legend! You desire help from people? YOU need help from a human?"

"Your pathetic." Leonarte said with his anger coming to the surface. Pointing at Lysandre he locked eyes with the man's visor. "Does your equipment tell you how badly your going to lose? Does it show you just how insane your plan is? Do you even know the future is certain? There are too many variables for you to know exactly what will happen you asshole!"

Lysandre ignored the outburst and sighed. "What I find pathetic is that Xerneas needs you to fight. Did you know Xerneas is not at full power? That is partly why you won, though I must admit Lucario, much like you, has Aura abilities. Limited as they may be, they are still a force to be recognized and treated accordingly as a threat to my plans!"

Leonarte took a few steps away from Xerneas and clenched his fists and shouted. "Xerneas, trample that sonofabitch with your power!" The dark haired youth shouted.

***

T he battle was over before Lysandre knew what had hit him. At the end of it he was left kneeling, his mega evolved Gyarados laying beaten behind its master. Pyroar, Mienshao, and Honchkrow lay nearby as well. Their master having let them fall where they stood as he kept summoning Pokemon until all were defeated. Even with the energy draining effects of the equipment he wore. Lysandre still was beaten by Leonarte and Xerneas working in concert. Not as Master and Pokemon, but as friends.

"This," Leonarte gestured to himself and Xerneas. "Is the power to snuff out flames as well as make them brighter. Remember that the next time you lift a finger against people Lysandre!"

"There was a time, when you would have said 'Mr. Lysandre'." Lysandre looked at Leonarte, his visor cracked from a stray burst of power from Xerneas as it fought off his team. Still it showed the Aura from Leonarte was brighter than before. "Now I see you for what you truly are, a meddlesome yet worthy opponent." Lysandre rose to his feet and discarded the damaged glasses. "I shall make you see how wrong you are first hand! I shall give you IMMORTALITY!" Lysandre raised his hands as the room shook. It was not from his words, but from the equipment underneath the weapon powering up said weapon. "That will be your reward for your damned hubris! Learn how right I am, learn how pathetic, sad, and worthless humans are with their wars and selfishness! With the power left in the machine, I have just enough energy to make you suffer for ETERNITY!"

Leonarte quickly recalled all his team except for two. "Lucario run ahead get everyone above clear of the collapse, Xerneas, I need you to allow me to capture you. The hallways are too narrow."

_We are yours to lead to safety._Xerneas replied silently.

Leonarte tossed a pokéball, the same one he had symbolically rubbed against Xerneas's muzzle to signify their bond; capturing the legendary within it. He cast a glance at Lysandre who continued stare off into the distance at nothing as the base shook.

Leonarte took off running then, wondering if everything would work out. In the end, the weapon fired, destroying the base and burying it and Lysandre underground. His fate was unknown. But everyone else had gotten a safe distance away thanks to Lucario.

I t had been a month since that battle. Now as he silently beckoned for Xerneas to continue on, Leonarte wondered exactly what they would do in the next region.

We are certain you will provide for us as you always have. Xerneas said.

_I know, thanks for being so bad ass Xer.

We appreciate your kind words, but the pet name is a bit too much for us._

Leonarte laughed as Xerneas launched itself into the air as it cleared a mountain chasm. Leading them on further into the unknown future.
