#12 of Rising Downfall

Continuing on with the story from the special chapter.

3 Years Later... (Guil's Time)

Living in Dragon City indeed gave me a fresh new start. I felt like a whole new kid. I couldn't believe how well I was getting along with everybody. They didn't seem to mind a little human kid and a wolf pup living in the city all on their own. 3 years went by just like that and I was enjoying myself. At least I remembered my birthday and Shang's birthday. I was already a teenager and Shang was already 5 years old. He's was getting a lot bigger and I was getting a lot taller and a bit more muscular than I was before. I felt like I could lift a building or two and juggle them around and put on a show.

Today, Shang and I volunteered to help Miguel and Jack finish the last building in the city. Of course, we couldn't forget about Miguel's son, Rufus. He was getting bigger, too and he was strong enough to lift a few boulders that were twice his size and his wings were big enough for him to fly around with ease. We were a big help with putting on the cement, putting the bricks in place, hammering nails in, and putting the roof on. At the pace we were working, we would be done with it in 3 hours tops and have the whole day to do what we want.

Just when we were finishing up, I heard Miguel and Jack conversing with someone. I had picked up a bucket of cement and walked over to see who they were talking to. It was a black dragon with blue eyes and, when he spotted me, he gasped. I blinked as I looked at him. He was staring at me and I stared back at him.

"Guil?" he said to me.

"What?" I replied back. How did he know my name? I saw him get closer to me and I continued to stare at him.

"I don't believe it... It's really you... I knew you were alive." I saw him reach out, as if to hug me but I stepped away from him a little bit.

"Uh, do I know you?"

He blinked at me and tilted his head.

"It's me, Grazar. You don't recognize me?"

It was my turn to tilt my head as I stared at him. He did not look familiar and I was having trouble remembering if I knew him. That name... I may have heard it before but I am ambiguous.

"Sorry, it's not ringing any bells," I calmly told him.

"Sure it does. You're just not thinking hard enough. Of course you know who I am."

I shook my head at him.

"No, I do not."

"You really do not remember who I am or even where your home is?"

"No, now please stop pestering me about this. We have a lot of work to do." He didn't say anything after that and I turned my attention to Miguel and Jack. "Hey, you two mind if I take a little break?"

"Uh, sure," Miguel said to me, a little taken back at my sudden change of tone at Grazar.

"Thanks." I put the bucket down and started walking back home. I could not remember who he was or how he knows me. It was bugging me ever since I saw him and he said my name. But, if I couldn't remember him, then he must be in the past and I need to move on from it. This is my new life now and I don't want it to change.

As I was walking, I continued to hear footsteps. I stopped walking and the footsteps stopped. Was that just my imagination? I continued walking and there were those footsteps again. This time, I stopped and turned around and saw that black dragon behind me. He was following me.

"What the heck are you doing?" I asked him. "Why are you following me? I told you, I don't remember you, so please stop following me."

"I know why you don't remember," he said to me. "Miguel and Jack told me. You developed amnesia during the times you were by yourself. I don't know how long it'll be before it wears off, but I want to at least try to jog your memory. All I want to ask is for you to give me a chance. Will you give me that chance, please?"

I folded my arms at him and started thinking about it. He was pretty persistent to prove to me that I don't belong here and I should know who he is and remember what my past was. I just don't know. I like my life here but I do want him to go his own way so he'll stop bugging me.

Just when I was about to give my answer, I heard Shang come out of the house with a grilled cheese sandwich in a bag in his mouth.

"You want something to eat?" he asked me with the bag dangling in his mouth. He turned and saw Grazar standing there and he gasped, dropping the bag on the ground and he stood in front of me, growling at him. "Who the heck are you and why are you giving Guil that look?!"

"Relax, furball," Grazar said to him. "I'm not an enemy, now stand down."

"I don't like your tone, you big lizard! You better leave Guil alone if you know what's good for you!"

This made Grazar laugh.

"You're quite a little comedian, mutt. Your threats do not faze me, so run along and bury a bone or something. Guil and I were discussing things."

"I'm not going anywhere! You're the one who needs to 'run along', you overgrown monster!"

As much as I was enjoying the name calling back and forth, this was getting nowhere.

"Quiet! Both of you!" I shouted at them, causing them to jump and glance back at me. I took a deep breath and glared at Grazar and pointed at him. "I'll give you 3 hours for you to stand by your word. You got me curious as to how much you really know about me, so I will give you a chance."

Grazar smiled and nodded. "You will not be disappointed. We shall take this to a nearby field outside of the city. Follow me." He turned and walked toward the exit. I sighed and took a step forward, but then Shang stopped me.

"You don't seriously trust this gecko, do you?" Shang whimpered to me.

"It's hard to say," I told him. "I will give him a chance to show me. If he fails, I will ask him to leave."

Shang looks at me and then nods.

"That sounds good to me. Let's see what he wanted to do."

We started walking out of the city and followed Grazar to an empty field that was a few minutes away from the city. Once we were there, I looked around and took a seat on a little stump next to some rose bushes. Shang sat down next to me.

"Alright Guil," he started to speak. "I'm going to show you some aerial abilities that I once shown you after your father died." I held back my comment from that. How does he know my father? Sadly, I don't even remember my parents. I've been living here and enjoying my new life the past 3 years until he showed up. A quick sigh was my response to him and Shang still had that angry look on his face. I could already tell what he was thinking and I was thinking the same thing. The sooner he finishes with his stunts, the sooner he can leave and leave me alone.

I saw him open his wings up and he immediately took to the skies and started doing some dynamic twists and turns. Strange enough, I could actually see how fast he was going. Shang was having a hard time distinguishing where he was and what he was doing. He was getting so dizzy that he fell over groaning to himself. I shook my head a little bit as I looked back up to the sky. I had to admit, he was really fast. Unfortunately for him, those moves did not look familiar. He came down with a huge thud and stood there, tall and proud and with a faint smirk on his face.

"So, do you remember now?" he asked me.

"Your skills are nice and all, but I never seen those in my life," was my response to him. I saw his grin turn into a frown as he looked away. His face lit up as he looked back at me.

"Hmm, well, normally I don't do this around others, but I use to do this when you were little to make you laugh."

"Used to do what?" I was a little bit curious as to what he was talking about. I then saw him lean his face closer to me. I had no idea what he was doing but I didn't like the fact that he was getting closer to me. Shang quickly got up and growled loudly, not liking the sudden approach either. I was getting ready to draw my sword at him when the most obdurate thing happened. I saw his eyes go cross-eyed and he spread his lips apart and his tongue flopped out of his mouth. I blinked as I stared at him for a few seconds. What...on Earth was with that face? I couldn't contain myself as I suddenly started laughing. I have never seen a face that ridiculous before. I was laughing so hard that I was crying. Shang didn't laugh, though. He just tilted his head and he looked at me.

"It still makes you laugh," he said to me. "You have to remember now."

It took me a minute to stop laughing and wiped the tears from my eyes and then I turned my attention backed to him.

"You did give me a good laugh...and you said you used to do that when I was a child to make me laugh?"

He nodded.

"Yes. You were still thinking about your parents' death and that was the only thing I could do to lift your spirits."

I then started to rub my head.

"I...still can't remember...but somehow I can feel that you're telling the truth..."

I saw his face get serious again.

"I have one more tactic. If this doesn't bring your memories back, then I don't know what will."

"Then, by all means, go for it, Grazar." This time, I was actually encouraging him to show me more of what he knows about me and my past. He cleared his throat and then another unusual thing happened: He started singing. Grazar was just chockfull of surprises. His voice...it was unlike anything I ever heard from a dragon. It was magnificent. As he continued singing, I could hear a woman singing as well...as if I heard it before. Unknown to me, I was crying. Why was I crying? I wiped my eyes and looked away. He stopped singing and looked at me.

"You always did cry when your mother used to sing that to you," Grazar said as he continued to look at me. I didn't say anything. I didn't know what to say. The only thing I did was walk away back to the city with Shang following behind me. "Where are you going?"

"...I'm going home," I said as I continued wiping my eyes.

"Um, your home is in the opposite direction." I heard him following behind me as I then started to speed up.

"No, my home is here... Dragon City... I don't remember my past and I don't think I'll ever remember. It's a lovely song, but I still do not remember anything. Besides, I'm happy here."

"But, this is not where you belong. This is not your true home and you know that."

"I don't want to know that! Why can't you just go away and leave me alone?!" I was starting to get really annoyed and impatient with this dragon. He just won't give up and it was getting on my nerves. I was just about to open the door to my house, when I heard him growl ferociously and he grabbed me and forced me to look at him.

"Dammit, Guil, why can't you remember?!" I saw him snarl at me. "Either you really have amnesia or you're just hiding from the truth. I've had it up to here with this. Memory or no memory, you are coming back home to Hawktown and that's final. No ifs, ands, or buts about it."

Okay, now he really crossed the line as I squirmed my way out of his grasp.

"I said no," I said, in a dark, yet somewhat calm, tone. "Look, you had your chance and you failed. It is you who is hiding from the truth that I really can't remember what happened in my past. Frankly, I think it's for the best that I don't remember and you're certainly not making it any better with your annoying persistence. I don't know how this amnesia works but I know that you can't force somebody to remember again! As far as I know, I'm glad I don't remember you since this is who you are. As far as I know, I hope I never see you again. Now, leave!" That was the last thing I said to him before turning back to my house and heading inside and closing it. I looked down to the ground and sighed.

"Well, way to let him have it," I heard Shang told me as he was sitting next to me by the door.

"I... I wish I didn't have to do that, but he was pushing it," I replied, feeling a little bit guilty. "Maybe... I should go back and apologize and handle that in a different approach."

"You can go for it, Guil."

I nodded as I opened the door back up, but he wasn't there anymore. I looked down the road and I saw him walking toward the gates, about to take off. I hurried over and reached out to grab his tail to prevent him from taking off. "Wait, Grazar."

"Why are you stopping me?" he said to me. "You don't want to see me again and I have to accept that you are happy here."

"I know, but... I was coming back to say... I-I'm sorry. I just... I can't go back. This is my home now. I know it's not what you want to hear, but... Well, at least you can come and visit, right?"

He turned his head fully around to look at me.

"You...want me to visit you?"

"Why not?"

I saw him start to smile. I began to smile back at him. Suddenly, I heard thunder from above as I looked up in the sky.

"A storm?" I asked, a little concerned.

"That's not just a storm," Grazar said. "That's a dragon storm that comes around every 3 years. The results after it is done are catastrophic."

I gasped lightly as I turned back to the village. The storm picked up fast as it began raining hard and lightning was striking down. Everybody was screaming and panicking, running into their houses and closing up shops and such. This is insane. I have never seen this type of storm before. It was looking like complete mayhem around here.

"We need to get you inside, quick!" said Grazar as he and I started to run back to our house. I opened the door to let Grazar head in first. I was just about to head in when I heard someone crying. Where was that noise coming from? I looked around and I saw Rufus trying to get his tail out of some fallen bricks and nobody was coming to his aid. I will not accept this. I ran out into the rain to help him by trying to lift the bricks up enough for him to pull his tail out. He managed to get free and, as soon as he did, a lightning bolt hit the house that we were under. The bolt made the house engulf in flames and it began to tumble down around us. I told Rufus to run as I was right behind him. He nodded to me as he ran toward the house and into shelter while I was trying to put the bricks down. I was too slow as I heard some crumbling noises above me. That's when I saw some of the construction tumble down upon me. It went back after that as I quickly lost consciousness.
