#6 of The Spyro Wars

Here is the 6th installment of The Spyro Wars. Is very, very short. Haven't written a chapter this short in a long, long time but I had to and when you reach the end you will either understand, or hate me very much.

Chapter 6: The Lost Road Home

UER Colony World Desmal

July 17, 2209

1406 Hours

23rd Street Library, Alpha HQ

"Lakadors, moving down the road!"

"Move your men into position!"

"Cover that flank!"

Miller heard yells as he ran to the medical area where his squad was. He had rolled Spyro and Cynder over there and upon entry found Crystal sprawled in a fetal position against the wall. The horrors of war were starting to take their toll on her.

"So how are they doc?" Miller asked. He was referring to Jake and the dragons.

"Well Jake is in a comatose state from which I cannot remove him from. I suspect those two are the same." The Surgeon said. Miller sighed. He placed his hand on Spyro's face. They could really use them right about now. Miller's hand glowed white and he removed it from Spyro's face. Suddenly the purple dragon moaned and opened his eyes.

"Where am I?" He asked a bit weakly.

"That is a long story."

"Miller! Where's Cynder?! We have to get out of the power plant!"

"Spyro relax, relax! We left the power plant a long time ago and returned to Marsha City. Right now we are in a UER base and its under attack. Think you and Cynder could help us out?"

He looked at Cynder who was still out.

"As soon as she's alright then I will be glad to help."

Miller, getting an idea, placed his hand on Cynder's face like he had before. Nothing happened. Why had it glowed white before? All he did was put his hand on her and hoped... wait a second... Hope! That was it! He once again put his hand on her and hoped that she would pull through. Suddenly his hand glowed white and Cynder coughed and groaned. Spyro looked with interest.

"Spyro..." She said as she moaned.

"Cynder! C'mon Cynder, wake up!" Spyro said, dashing to her side and shaking her.

She opened her eyes and looked at him.

"Oh Spyro... I'll always wake up for you..."

Spyro smiled and hugged her tightly.

"Uh guys, there's a battle going on!" A Marine said as he entered the room.

"He's right, Spyro, Cynder, we need your help."

"What's going on?"

"I'll explain later." He walked over to Crystal and put his hand on her. She was really out of it. He got an idea and walked over to Jake who was lying on the table. He hoped that Jake would pull through and set his hand on Jake's face. It glowed white and Jake coughed and moaned.

"Where am I?" He said in a low voice. Crystal heard this and jumped to her feet. She saw that he was awake and rushed over to hug him. He had a look of sheer confusion on his face.

"Was there... something I missed?" Jake said as his sister continued to hug him. Miller smiled at the moment but an explosion outside brought him back to reality. He nodded to Spyro and Cynder and they followed him out of the medical room. He met up with Hujovanti and Malian outside and the whole squad of Marines went to the front of the library.

The civilians were either staying behind to fight or were being evacuated through the back of the library to a grass field outside of the city via a network of above ground tunnels and access ways. He had given Hanna to an older lady who was with them earlier and hoped that they would make it to the Javelin.

As they went to the front they exited and found several Marines and GIs forming defenses along the cannel and in the buildings up ahead.

"Corporal! Move your squad to the front! They need all the help they can get!" A Captain yelled at Miller.

"Yes sir!" Miller said. With that said, they dashed across the cannel and over about 50 yards through broken concrete and fallen ruble to a makeshift defense line made out of debris and rubble.

Miller leapt onto the rubble and got into a prone position with his Carbine pointed outwards. The others did the same and soon they were joined by two other squads of GIs and Marines. Miller could see some Lakadors off in the distance and they were coming for them.

A roar came through his ears and Miller saw a large crowd of Lakadors charge their positions. Some dashed for cover and fired from there and others just came at them.

"Fire!" A soldier said and soon the whole area exploded with machine gun fire. Explosions blanked the Lakadors as Grenades and Mortars were fired from unseen positions. An artillery piece was even used and a large crowd of Lakadors were blown apart.

Miller pressed down on the trigger of his Carbine and watched as he cut down a Lakador. Many dashed for cover but there wasn't much cover to be seen. Machine gun positions from upper floors cut down many Lakadors before they could even seek cover.

Spyro and Cynder sat there, not knowing what to do. This was a long range conflict and Spyro felt so useless. How could he really help them? He specialized in close range combat, not long range like the Marines were suited for.

The battle was really getting heated up at this point. The Lakadors were being pinned down by overwhelming firepower but they were pushing through the buildings. Spyro caught a glimpse of a Lakador moving through the buildings and firing at the Marines from those positions.

"Spyro! Cut them off!" Miller yelled as he loaded a new clip into his Carbine. Spyro and Cynder both dashed to the buildings along the right and entered through a doorway. The inside had been gutted out and there was a hole in the wall. There was a Marine crouching next to the hole and Spyro saw him pivot his body over the hole and squeeze a burst at a Lakador attempting to get through the building.

Spyro and Cynder dashed to the wall, much to the Marine's surprise, and Spyro filled the room with ice. The ice caused any Lakadors in the room to slip and fall or be frozen in place. Cynder conjured a jet of poison using her old poison breath- that she had curiously never used during their previous conflict- and unleashed it into the room. The other Lakadors choked as they suffocated on the fumes and the others stayed back and fired their rifles at them.

Dark energy impacted the wall they were behind and the Marine chunked a Frag Grenade into the room. Smoke and dirt blew out of the hole as the grenade detonated. Spyro fire into the room and it kept the other Lakadors at bay. They kept coming though... Spyro and Cynder would have to figure out something to keep them back.

Outside the battle was looking worse by the minute. The two machine gun positions mounted on the left and right in the upper floors of the buildings were pouring fire onto the Lakadors, but they kept coming.

A Marine next to Miller pressed a detonator and 4 C-4 explosives detonated on a walkway that connected two buildings across the street. This walkway collapsed and fell upon a cluster of Lakadors trying to get through the street. More explosions occurred and parts of the neighboring buildings caved into the street and buried Lakadors under rubble. A rocket sailed overhead and detonated in a mass of Lakadors and assault rifle fire blanketed the area.

Above the scene, a Lakador snickered to himself. They had eluded him at the Power Plant, but they wouldn't escape this. He had lead the Lakadors directly to the human HQ and this is where they would perish.

"Goodbye Miller, Spyro and Cynder... you have been disappointing..." with that he leapt from the rooftop and returned vanished into thin air.

Soon Miller's fears were only increased as buildings started to explode. They weren't from human explosives and traps, they were from Lakador artillery. The Lakador dark energy crystals collided with buildings and exploded. A Lakador crystal shattered nearby Miller, blowing a whole squad of Marines away and destroying their cover. It wouldn't be long before they had to fall back.

Things only worsened as three Lakador tanks came upon the scene. One detonated as a rocket hit it but the other two pressed on. One had a gun which fired a dark energy crystal which detonated upon impact, a deadly weapon against infantry. However, the other scared Miller to no end. The 'Tank killer' gun fired a pure beam of energy which destroyed anything in its path. A whole column of Jaguar Tanks could be destroyed by one beam. They were deadly.

The tank charged up its main gun and a beam of dark energy flew at one of the Machine gun positions. The position ceased to exist, as did its gunners. The other position was blown apart by artillery fire and more and more Lakadors poured into the streets.

"Fall back!" A GI Captain yelled and Miller didn't hesitate to follow.

"You heard him, fall back! Get to the fall back positions!" Miller yelled. His squad complied and rushed from their positions. As they retreated, more traps were sprung and the nearby buildings collapsed onto the tanks. A rocket jockey fired two missiles at the tanks and finished them off.

Miller ran across the bridges that spanned the cannel and jumped behind a concrete railing and fired his Carbine at the Lakadors emerging from the rubble. He looked around, where were Spyro and Cynder?

"Spyro, we have to go!" Cynder yelled. Spyro blew more fire into the room and was rewarded as three Lakadors went up in flames.

"Right let's go!" Spyro yelled. They ran to the doorway and the two Marines there chunked grenades in before they left. They dashed into the open and noticed the humans pulling back. They had to regroup. Before Spyro knew it, a Lakador came around the corner and leapt at him. The Lakador hit Spyro in the face with the butt of his rifle and Spyro reacted by biting the weapon and using his jaw strength to wench the weapon from his hands. The Lakador was nonetheless stunned and Spyro head butted the Lakador into the wall and spat a fireball at an oncoming group.

"Come on!" He said and they all ran across the open ground.

"Shift your fire!"

"Covering fire!" Came orders from across the cannel and Spyro and Cynder took flight to get above the human firing positions. The two Marines behind them weren't so lucky and were caught in a fire grenade tossed by the Lakadors.

Spyro and Cynder sailed over to the human firing positions and gunfire poured onto the oncoming Lakadors. Soon more artillery exploded all around them and they blew the bridges. LMGs blared .30 cal ammo and the humans fired their assault rifles as the Lakadors came on them. Spyro and Cynder blew fire to cloud the battlefield and give a chance for the humans to escape. They took the opportunity but a whole squad was flung from their position and even Spyro was displaced as an enemy artillery round detonated on the library steps.

They all dashed for the entrance and saw that the whole library had been emptied. A pair of Marines stood near the command center and pointed them in the direction they needed to go. They went and part of the roof caved in as more artillery exploded all around them.

"Keep going, don't stop!" someone yelled and they passed up a squad of GIs as they prepared to cover their retreat. They had pushed the library desks together to form a makeshift defense and they leapt over it to get passed. Spyro wanted to stay and help, but he knew he had to go. As they went to the back of the library Spyro heard their screams and gunfire and regretted not staying to help them. However, he had to ensure the safe passage of these humans to the Javelin. They had to get off this planet! They had to get back to the dragon realms!

They exited and as they did, dark energy spheres splattered across the wall. A Marine fell as three hit him in the back and the Lakadors were right behind them. The backside to the library was a set up of two elevated walkways, each set up on a level. These elevated walkways connected to a tower on an opposite side and underneath them, a loading dock sat, where supplies would normally be driven in by trucks. Now that space was there being occupied by Lakadors firing up at GIs firing down at them from the elevated walkways.

Across the tower there was an entrance into an underground road that lead to the Javelin sight. They just had to get to the metro.

However, Spyro doubted that their waning squad, only 5 members strong at this point, excluding Spyro and Cynder, would make it across the walkway without being cut down by the Lakadors. He had to do something.

"Cynder, go on ahead with Miller, I'll hold them off."

"No Spyro, you have to come!"

"Cynder, you know we'll never make it, one of us has to hold them off as long as they can so the others can go. I am going to be that one." Cynder stared at him, begging him to go with them, but a voice broke the unusual silence.

"No Spyro, go. We'll cover you." Jake and Crystal stood there, both holding M74D assault rifles and a couple of Frag Grenades strapped to them.

"No, you guys are not staying!" Miller said in protest. Hujovanti nodded.

"Your wrong Miller, you saved us, now its time for us to save you. Go, get to the metro, we'll hold them here." Miller was about to say something in protest once more when he realized it was the only option unless they all were to stay there. He knew he couldn't convince them otherwise.

"Fine..." He patted them on the shoulder.

"Take care you two... I didn't rescue you and keep you two this long to see you both die."

"We'll be alright." He nodded.

"Sir, they're coming! We have to go, now!" Malian said.

Miller took one last look at the two kids before he, the Marines, and Spyro and Cynder, left them and dashed down the path. About halfway he could hear sporadic gunfire and screams as the Lakadors engaged the two teenagers. Miller wanted to go and help them, but they had to get to the other side. They reached the other side and entered the tower and past that, the metro. A few GIs stood guard and they nodded to Miller and the others.

In the metro tunnel there were several parked jeeps and an APC. They all boarded the vehicles and Spyro and Cynder took flight alongside. The vehicles came to life and thundered down the road. They would make it.

As Spyro flew beside the vehicles, he could hear gunfire in the distance and thumps as explosions happened. They would be in for an eventful trip. He was right. Small ramps for vehicles to enter the metro tunnel were crowded by Lakadors and anti vehicular weapons. As the Jeeps passed by, .50 cal and faster firing .30 cal turrets came to life and Spyro and Cynder did passes along the enemy positions. They spat electricity and fire at the positions, engulfing them and allowing the jeeps and the APC to pass. The APC fired its 50 mm gun, blowing apart an enemy position and allowing them to pass.

Lakadors tried to halt their advance by placing barriers in the road but Spyro flew down and blew them away with Earth Blasts and Cynder assisted with her shadow breath. The APC finished off the barriers with the 50 and once again the convoy was up and running. They had been driving for a good while when Spyro realized that there had been no opposition for a while. He looked around and as they pressed on he realized just why: they had set up a trap!

"It's a trap!" Spyro called out as he halted himself in midair and tried to signal the drivers to do the same. It was too late. An enemy tank fired at the lead jeep and it detonated and skid to a halt nearby.

The other two broke off and the APC came to a halt and fired its gun. Spyro spat ice shards and they shattered against the hull of an enemy tank. There were too many for them to take, they had to split for a run. They ditched the vehicles and a hole in the metro tunnel allowed them an escape. As Spyro and Cynder covered, the Humans retreated through the hole and emerged into the sunlight outside the city.

Outside, a grassland awaited them and the afternoon sun warmed them up. There was no time for sightseeing as they dashed into the grass and Spyro unleashed a fire fury which blew apart the enemy formation. Cynder threw in her own fury which allowed them more time. Their energy exhausted, they landed and scampered to the retreating humans as they ran out into the field. There was adequate cover amongst some trees a few hundred yards down. If they could get to them, they could return fire at them.

As they dashed, Spyro and Cynder regrouped with them.

"Split up, we'll be less of a target!" Miller yelled. They followed his orders and split up in the grass. The grass concealed them a great deal, being almost shoulder height.

As they ran, dark energy fire came from the trees that they were going for! Lakadors fired from a small gulley that provided cover and hit them with their weapons. The Marines and GIs fired from their own positions, muzzle flashes visible through the tall grass. Dark energy flew from behind and soon the humans began to fall one by one.

"There's too many!" Hujovanti called out as he fired his M10 at the enemy. Spyro and Cynder kept near Miller and they considered aiding from the air but before they could make a decision, enemy artillery exploded all around them and humans flew through the air as the crystals exploded all around them.

"Hold your positions! Keep firing!" Miller screamed over the explosions. Spyro fired a wall of ice out and managed to form a shield for some of the Marines, but they were getting hit from all directions. Soon an explosion happened nearby and Miller fell face down in the dirt as he took a direct hit from it.

"Miller!" Spyro screamed and rolled the Marine over to find his chest armor melted off and his vest smoldering. The Marine coughed and looked up at him.

"Cynder, help me move him!" Spyro yelled and they both tried to conceal him in the tall grass but there was so much artillery that it was almost impossible. The bombardment stopped, much to their approval, but there was still a great deal of fire being poured onto their position. Spyro would have to fix that, but how? They were in the middle of a huge crossfire. If they went airborne they would become BIG targets.

To their horror, an enemy light tank just added to the mix. Energy spat from it and Spyro didn't want to think of how many Marines were still left.

"Spyro, leave me, just go! Save yourselves!" Miller said as he coughed a bit of blood.

"No Miller, you're getting out of here! We're getting to that Javelin and your coming with us!" Cynder said as ducked to avoid a blast of dark energy. Spyro looked up and saw a large rock above the tank. If he could knock that down, maybe the tank could be destroyed...

Suddenly without warning the tank exploded. Spyro recoiled back in surprise as this happened and craned his neck and saw several missiles streak over to the Lakador positions and detonate, blowing them apart.

He looked up and saw an aircraft. The aircraft he had never seen before, but it was painted green and had the markings of 'UERMC' on it. The aircraft had two machine guns which both blared at the enemy soldiers. Tracers split the air and soon more aircraft like it flew overhead. Spyro caught the name 'Raptor' on its side.

The aircraft flew overhead and missiles flew this way and that, blowing apart the Lakadors. Spyro could hear some cheers of Marines and GIs that had miraculously survived the onslaught.

Lakadors tried to fire at the new targets, but a volley of gunfire erupted from behind Spyro. Spyro and Cynder both looked up to the top of the Metro Tunnel and saw that on its roof sat a whole company of UER soldiers. More streamed from the tunnel itself and overhead Nighthawks flew and machine guns fired. UER Tanks rolled onto the grass and their guns fired shells at the retreating Lakadors.

Miller smiled as he saw in the troop bays of one of the nighthawks, the young faces of Crystal and Jake. They had survived, against all odds, somehow they managed to pull it off.

A Nighthawk flew nearby their position and Spyro saw not 'UERMC' on it but 'UCC'. A few soldiers adorned in a special uniform and black camouflage stream from its troop bay and to Spyro's surprise two dragons came from its troop bay and flew overhead.

They wore gray outfits with 'UCC' on it. They flew directly at the enemy positions and used Ice and Earth attacks against the Lakadors.

As Miller watched he recalled the Marines talking about a white and green dragon. Were these them? Special dragons fighting for the UER? They had to be them!

Soldiers fired their rifles all around them and the Lakadors were in almost full retreat. The dragons hammered the Lakadors and the UER soldiers and tanks pushed them back.

Two soldiers approached Spyro, Cynder, and Miller. They had blue mirrored visors over their eyes and wore black helmets with unmistakable 'UCC' on it. Spyro and Cynder just stared at them and they started in return. Miller did likewise as he sat up, fighting the pain.

They removed their visors to reveal the faces of none other then Karson and Allison.

End of Chapter 6

This is very, very short and I'm sorry but I just had to cut it off here to get maximum effect and I cannot write a reunion scene for the life of me so I have a surprise or two in store.
