#12 of A trainer's story

** Feelings hidden in the Flames**

It had been two days since the epic battle between Lucario and Charizard.

Our heroes were still training at Oreburgh City. Ryan was waiting for Charizard to heal completely, and in the mean time, he decided to help Monferno learning some new moves, in order to unlock the pokemon's full potential, and to prepare for his gym battle against Roark as well.

Of course, Jake and his gang were happy to help out, especially Lucario, who couldn't wait for his chance to beat up Monferno, whom he disliked and refered to as a talkative pest.

(Oreburgh Mine, training ground)

"Ready, Jake?" Ryan asked.

"Whenever you are." Jake replied with a smile.

"Then let's do it! Monferno, I choose you!" Ryan exclaimed and thew a pokeball onto the battle field. The ball flickled and opened in the middle of the air, from which came a reddish flash, revealing the fire pokemon - Monferno.

"My turn! Lucario, fight with me!" Jake shouted and followed Ryan's suit. Lucario let out a menacing growl as he was released from his pokeball, and now facing Monferno. Both pokemon glared at each other, awaiting their trainer's orders.

"If you don't mind, I'll have the 1st move. Monferno, use mach punch!" Ryan commanded. Monferno quickly responded as he charged at Lucario, his first glowed white blue. Then with an incredible speed, Monferno unleashed a series of punches, aiming at Lucario.

"He's fast!" Jake flinched, "Not good. Even with Lucario's speed, it's impossible for him to dodge all of those punches. Guess I have no choice but to take them head on. Alright Lucario, counter it with close combat!"

Not wasting a second, the aura pokemon also charged at Monferno. Normally, it would be stupid to rush into your opponent's attack, but Lucario as a speed user himself, understood more than anyone that he could only counter a fast attack with an even faster attack. Now, the battle between two pokemon had become a match of speed and fighting skill.

Lucario's close combat was soon proven to be the winner. Not only was he able to block all of Monferno's punches, but he also managed to hit the fire pokemon a few times. When it came to speed, not many pokemon could match Lucario and unfortunately, Monferno wasn't one of them.

Of course, Ryan noticed that his pokemon was being outmatched, so he immediately gave out another command, "Monferno, fall back and use flamethrower!"

Monferno nodded as he quickly jumped backwards. Opening his mouth, the pokemon unleased a fierce stream of fire at Lucario.

"Why use such an obvious move? Lucario, dodge it!" Jake shouted. Lucario responded by stepping to his left side, thus easily avoided the assault.

"Now's our chance!", Ryan said loudly, "Monferno, flame wheel!"

The fire pokemon nodded. He unleashed a powerful flame from his mouth, covering his entire body as he started to somersault and roll into Lucario.

"That's what I'm talking about!" Jake exclaimed, his voice packed with excitement, "Let's return the favor with everything we have, Lucario! Use bone rush to block that flame wheel!"

The aura pokemon quickly joined his paws together, only to spread them apart again, generating a long, green energy bone. No sooner than he did that, Monferno's flame wheel had already come very close, just in the nick of time for Lucario to prevent it from ramming into him with his energy staff. However, the heat and small sparks radiated from the fiere wheel was making Lucario feel really uncomfortable, even the fur on his paws was starting to burn.

"Hang in there, Lucario!" Jake shouted.

"What...do you think...I'm...doing?" Lucario gritted his teeth, sweat running down his face.

"Damn it! If only Lucario's paws were free, he could use aura sphere to knock Monferno off easily...Wait, I know! Lucario, use force palm!" Jake ordered. Almost instantly, Lucario understood what Jake wanted him to do. The pokemon let go of his right paw and put it on Monferno. He grimaced, feeling the intense heat breaking throught his fur and started burning his skin. Immediately, Lucario released a yellowish energy beam, causing Monferno to fly backwards and fall heavily onto the ground.

"Now, wrap it up with aura sphere!" Jake gave out his last command. Although his paws were still hurt, Lucario jumped onto the air and joined them together again, but this time, energy streams could be seen gathering between them, forming a blue ball.

"Take this!" Lucario growled triumphantly as he fired the blue energy ball at Monferno, who still hadn't recovered from his previous attack, and was completely helpless as he took the final blow from his opponent.

The impact, of course, resulted in a small explosion, and when the smoke cleared, everyone, mostly Lucario, was shocked to see that Monferno was still standing stiffly. But Ryan shook his head, for he knew that Monferno had reached his limit, and to prove his thought, the fire pokemon immediately collasped, face-first onto the ground.

"Haiz...You were great, buddy, but I think we tried a little too hard. Return, Monferno." Ryan sighed as he retrieved the unconcious fire pokemon. As for Jake, he simply ran over to give his lover a victory hug, but soon became concerned when he noticed Lucario's wincing in pain.

"What's wrong? Oh no, your paws..." said the trainer as he gently grabbed Lucario's paws to examine them, "You're hurt, and it's all my fault. I shouldn't have used force palm. I'm sorry!"

Lucario's muzzle curled into a smile of content. He placed his other paw on Jake's cheek and stroke it lovingly, "You have nothing to be sorry for. I trust you..."

Jake smiled too. 'I trust you' - Those words might sound really simple, but only Jake could understand the feelings hidden deep within. After that night...the night Lucario gave Jake eveything he had. Their bond had become stronger than ever, as they cared deeply for each other, and they could understand each other's feelings, just by a simple eye contact, "I have some healing potion here. Let's me cure your wounds."

Watching the loving pair taking care of each other warmed Ryan's heart and made him smile, but also saddened him at the same time, for it remind Ryan of his beloved Charizard.

What was wrong with him? He just hadn't seen Charizard for 2 days...Just 2 days, but why did feel like 2 weeks. Ryan didn't know the reason, but when he saw Jake and Lucario sharing their affection, he was actually envious of their happiness.

Having been to carried away by his thoughts, Ryan didn't realize that he was staring at Jake and Lucario, well, at least not until Jake decided to break the awkward silence, "Uhm, hello? Back to earth, Ryan!"

"What?...Oh, sorry. Where were we?"

"What are you talking about? You've been standing there staring at me since we finished training. What's wrong? Do I have something funny on my face?" Jake said, looking at Ryan curiously.

"No...I just..." Ryan mumbled, trying to find the right words to describe his feelings, "I...miss him...Charizard."

"Oh..." Jake exclaimed softly. He totally understood Ryan's pain, because he had experienced a similar pain before, when Riolu was seriously injured in his 1st battle against Charmeleon, and felt unconscious for 2 days. In those 2 days, Jake did nothing but look at Riolu while holding the little pokemon's soft paw. It was so painful...being able to see your loved one, yet still couldn't hear his voice, and Jake knew it was pretty much what Ryan was suffering, so he decided the best thing to do now was to leave Ryan alone. Trying to comfort him at a time like this would only make things worse.

"Guess I'm done for today...I'll be going 1st..." Ryan muttered as he turned around and slowly walked away.

"What's with him?" Lucario asked as he watched Ryan trailing off.

"Nothing...We'd better leave him alone." Jake replied, "So, do you want to continue our training or we could head back to a hotel for a break?"

"Well, I'll do anything you want. Your wish is my wish." Lucario said and playfully rubbed his head against Jake's shoulder.

"Alright, then let's get back to the hotel and after that, you'll bring that lovely muzzle to me so I can give it a good, wet kiss." The trainer smiled at he looked into his lover's gorgerous crimson eyes.

"Roger!"

(The next day)

Ryan woke up very early in the morning. He felt neither tired nor sleepy. Instead, his mind was stormed by a mixed feeling of excitement and anxiety. Excited, because he finally had the chance to reunite with his lover. Nervous, because this would be the first time Ryan met his lover as a Charizard.

Ryan quietly made his way out of the hotal. He didn't call Jake, because he knew it was way too early, and his friend needed a good sleep after having trained very hard yesterday.

The early morning air was a little cold because of the fog, but refreshing as Ryan breathed in deeply. He strolled around, wondering if the Pokemon Center had opened, but discarded the thought when realized that almost nodoby else was awake. However, while he was on his way to the Oreburgh mine training ground, Ryan suddenly heard something.

"Latios, use giga impact! Aim for that boulder!" came the mysterious voice of a young man, Ryan guessed he was about the same age as Jake. The command was followed by a loud clashing sound, as well as the sound of broken rocks hitting the ground.

"Latios? The legendary Eon Pokemon?" Ryan muttered, and immediately rushed to the direction of the sound. Ryan had always been curious about legendary pokemon, and he didn't want to waste the chance to meet one of them, as well as the trainer who possessed the skills to capture and command Latios. But when Ryan arrived, there was no one around, despite the fact that the ground was filled with smashed and broken rocks, the traces of a recent training. He sighed in disappointment and left.

Without anything else to do, Ryan decided to head for the Pokemon Center and retrieve his Charizard. Much to the trainer's surprise and joy, the Pokemon Center had already opened.

"Good morning Nurse Joy. I'm Ryan, and I come to check if my Charizard is ready to leave." Ryan greeted Nurse Joy with a polite smile.

"Ryan, let's see...Oh, right here." Nurse Joy said as she handed Ryan a pokeball, "Here you go. Your Charizard is perfectly healed."

"Thank you!" Ryan said loudly, his eyes beaming with joy. As soon as he got his hand on Charizard's pokeball, the trainer immediately rushed out of the Pokemon Center, wishing for nothing but getting back to the hotel to see his lover.

Panting heavily, Ryan closed the door of his room. He stared at the pokeball, thinking of what he would say to Charizard when he let the pokemon out, but nothing came up in his mind. Breathing in deeply, Ryan muttered, "Alright, came out, Charizard!"

The ball opened with a 'ping' sound, followed by a stream of reddish light. And standing there, in front of Ryan, was his long-live mate, Charizard.

Even when Ryan thought he was prepared. Charizard's new appearance was still overwhelming to him.

Charizard was much taller than his Charmeleon form, as his height now had surprassed Ryan's. He had fully taken the shaft of a powerful dragon with a long, slender neck, two proud horns on the back of his head and a pair of mighty wings had also grown on his back.

Ryan brought his head up and looked into Charizard's eyes. The familiar green eyes he once remembered had now become blue - a pair of beautiful deep blue eyes. Ryan could see every bit of love Charizard had for him in those eyes, fierce and passionate like the flame.

"Charizard..." Ryan muttered, not taking his eyes of his pokemon mate.

"Ryan..." Charizard replied with a low tone as his voice become deeper and even more masculine. Howvever, before Charizard could open his mouth to say anything else, Ryan had decided to make his move.

Catching his lover by surprise, Ryan wrapped arms around Charizard's neck and pulled the pokemon closer to him, until their lips met in a kiss. Charizard was shocked at first, so he offered no resistance and let Ryan have his way with him, but the pokemon eventually joined the fun as he started making out with Ryan passionately. His tongue easily overwhelmed Ryan's, reclaiming its master's position as the dominant male.

They could go on like that forever, unfortunately, Ryan's blissfull moment eventually had to come to an end when he ran out of breath. However, the trainer didn't let go of Charizard as he burried his face in the pokemon warm chest.

"I love you..." said Ryan with a muffled voice. Charizard could feel his chest was slightly damped. He also wrapped his arms around Ryan's back as he hugged his lover with as much passion, "I love you too, Ryan. Let's get a little more comfortable."

Using his strong arms, Charizard picked Ryan up with ease and gently placed him on the bed, then he also climed onto the bed and laid on top of his lover. The trainer, who still hadn't let go, muttered again, "Please, stay with me like this for a little more..."

"As you wish." Charizard said as he closed his eyes and enjoyed their loving moment.

...

*Yawn* "Morning, guys." Jake said sluggishly and rubbed his eyes.

"Good morning, Jake." Lucario, Luxray and Typhlosion chorused, each of them was wearing the usual morning smile to greet their trainer.

"Okay, I will find Ryan and train again. We'd gotta help him get ready for his gym battle. Let's go, guy." Jake said as he putted on his jacket. The trainer and his gang walked to Ryan's room, only to find out he had already left. Jake took out his pokedex and contacted Ryan, "Hey Ryan, where are you?"

"I'm at the Orebugh mine. Hurry and come here Jake. I have something to show you." Ryan replied through his pokedex.

(10 minutes later, Oreburgh mine)

"Hey Ryan!" Jake called as he spotted his friend.

"There you are, Jake." Ryan said, "Let me introduce to you my newest, and most powerful pokemon."

Before Jake could open his mouth to ask for anything else, the trainer and his gang were greeted by a sudden, powerful gush of wind, forcing them to cover their eyes because of the dirt.

"Arg...What's going on?" Lucario grunted. A few seconds later, the wind finally ceased. Everyone opened their eyes, only to have their mouth nearly drop: Descending from the sky, right in front of them was a fierce-looking Charizard. As the pokemon landed, he unleashed an earth-shaking roar, forcing everyone to cover their ears.

"Without any further ado, I give you...Charizard!" Ryan said proudly as he patted the flame pokemon's shoulder.

"W...wow!" Jake muttered as he was amazed by the magnificent pokemon. Even Lucario was surprised to see his archrival being in such a vigorous stage.

"Isn't he looking great?" Ryan grinned, "Charizard will be my main pokemon when I battle Roark."

"Cool...But wait, Roark is specialized in ground pokemon, and Charizard is a fire-type. Didn't you say fire attack won't do much damage against ground pokemon?" Jake pointed out.

"True." Ryan nodded, "However, I can always make up for that disadvantage with physical attack. Why don't we show you? Charizard, air slash!"

Immediately, the flame pokemon took fly. His wings then glowed white blue as he flapped them, releasing multiple crescent energy blades at a boudler, breaking it into little pieces.

"Awesome!" Jake exclaimed, "It's even more powerful than the last time when he battled Lucario."

"Trust me, all I need is 1 week. One week, and I'll be ready to face Roark and win my first badge. In the mean time, why don't we train together?"

"Sure."

(1 week later)

Our heroes were slowly walking into the Oreburgh Gym. Jake remembered the place when he battled for the Coal Badge, and the trainer also remembered how nervous he had been back then, but when he looked at Ryan, he was surprised to see his friend was fairly relaxed, even excited.

"Hey Ryan..." Jake said and tapped Ryan's shoulder slightly, "Aren't you worry about the upcoming battle?"

"Why should I?" Ryan replied, "I'm feeling pretty pumped up right now."

"Alright, good luck."

"Thanks, but I won't be needing any luck, cuz I know we are going to win. I observed your battle with Roark, I trained hard, and I trust my team as well. Don't worry, Jake. You just sit back and enjoy the show." Ryan said, his voice was filled with confidence.

"Then I have nothing else to say." Jake shrugged and continued to walk with Ryan into the battle area, followed by their pokemon companions.

As they finally got out of the hallway, Ryan and Jake could easily spot the gym leader Roark, wearing his usual miner outfits, standing at the other side of the rocky battle field.

"Challengers, welcome to Oreburgh Gym...Oh, it's you Jake. I thought you'd already left the city. So, what can I do for you today?" Roark asked.

"Uhm no, I actually come here to watch my friend's battle." Jake replied, scratching the back of his head.

"That's me." Ryan said, walking towards the position for challengers, "My name is Ryan. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Alright, since you've already been here before, I'll skip the introduction and useless pep talk. Let's battle!" Roark declared.

"I was hoping for nothing else. Let's go, Charizard, I choose you!" Ryan replied enthusiastically as he threw Charizard's pokeball onto the battle field.

(10 minutes later)

"A-amazing..." Jake muttered, looking totally astonished, and he wasn't the only one to have that expression. All of his pokemon also had the same expression as they too, were impressed by Ryan's skill and Charizard's battle prowess, especially Lucario.

Just as Ryan said earlier, Charizard had taken out 2 of Roark's pokemon, Geoduce and Onix, with seismic toss and air slash, and now he was facing the gym leader's final pokemon, Rampardos.

"Rampardos, use zen headbutt!" Roark commanded. The head butt pokemon immediately respond to his trainer as a blue reflective shield formed and covered his skull. Rampardos then charged forwards Charizard, head first as he tried to slam the flame pokemon.

"That move again. I've already know how to counter it." Ryan thought, watching carefully as Rampardos approached Charizard, "Come on, just a little closer...Now, take it to the sky and use slash. Aim for Rampardos' legs."

The flame pokemon growled as he spread his wings and soared into the sky, thus avoided Rampardos' assault right on the nick of time. Also, Ryan had intentionally let Charizard stand in front of a boulder. Rampardos, who had missed his target, couldn't restrain his speed and slammed head first right into the boulder, breaking it into pieces and damaging himself at the same time.

Charizard made his move before his opponent could recover as his claws glowed white and became much longer. Piercing the wind, he flied into Rampardos and cut through the head butt pokemon's left leg.

"Arggggggg!!!" Rampardos roared in agony as he felt onto his knees, unable to support his own massive weight with one injured leg.

"No! Pull yourself together, Rampardos! Use flamethrower!" Roark yelled in despair. Still grunting in pain, but Rampardos had managed to obey his trainer's order as he unleashed a stream of fire at Charizard. Of course the flame pokemon had no troubles dodging it.

"Give it up. You know a move like flamethrower cannot hit my flying-type Charizard, and now your Rampardos can't even stand, he's as good as done. Charizard, finish him off with air slash. Keep on hitting Rampardos until he can't get up!" Ryan ordered, wearing a triumphant smile on his face.

Letting out a thunderous roar, the flame pokemon flied even higher. His wings then glowed white blue and he started flapping them repeatedly, releashing dozen of crescent energy blades at Rampardos. None of them missed, and Rampardos soon collasped from the punishment, unconscious.

"Rampardos is unable to battle! Charizard wins, and the victory goes to the challenger ryan!" the referee anounced, poiting his flag at Ryan's side.

"Good job, Charizard." Ryan said cheerfully as Charizard landed right next to him and started nuzzling him with his head. The trainer chuckled and stroked his lover's head, "You were amazing...truly amazing."

"That was so cool!"Jake exclaimed, "Way to go, Ryan!"

"Indeed!" Roark added as he and the referee walked to the challenger's spot, where Ryan was standing, "Not every trainer can defeat all 3 of my pokemon using only 1, leave alone a pokemon with type disadvantages like Charizard. You really are something else, Ryan. Here..." the gym leader said as he motioned the referre, who was holding a small case which contained a badge, "According to the pokemon league, I present you with the official Coal Badge."

"Thank you." Ryan said as he took the Coal Badge, holding it high above his head, "Alright, my 1st gym battle victory!"

And to celebrate his brilliant win, the mighty Charizard roared and fired a flamethrower into the sky, showing off his power.

(To be continued)
