The heron
It was a beautiful day at the lake. Lovely and sunny, perfect for sunbathing in. The young croc, Luke, was catching the sun on the bank. The sun felt wonderful! Luke drifted off into sleep, forgetting he was out in the open...
Hermione flew above the shimmering blue-green lake. "a good day for catching food!" she thought. There was nothing better than a good bite to eat. The massive heron saw Luke sunbathing on the grass. An easy picking and a decent size, too! Could this day get any better? She had already feasted on the juicy fish that had come to feed on the algae that was abundant and growing in the sun. Hermione swooped down and silently landed, being careful not to wake the baby croc until she was sure she could swallow it whole. It was only 50 cm long . She quickly grabbed the sleepy croc's head in her beak and shook it to paralyse it, careful not to break it's neck as she wanted a live meal. She carried it away to a good shady place where she wouldn't be pestered.
The heron took the wriggling ( no longer paralysed) croc's head to the back of her mouth. Hermione prepared to swallow her lunch. GULP she got it down in one go , a squirming bulge In her neck . It made it's way from the mouth to stomach in less than 3 seconds. There was no visible evidence of her lunch , although there was usually a big bulge. This meal was small and the twitching croc would be digested in an hour. The twitching subsided and the croc began the digesting process.
