Make Me Like An Irishman

A tribute to the Irish and a prayer to God.

Lord, make me like the Irishmen,

Let my reasons here be told:

Passion to the Irishman

Be worth more than a pot of gold.

As he falls to the ground and weeps,

For maiden fair and young,

Let me mourn for Eden lost,

And join his tearful song.

When he's filled with merriment,

And laughter flows like wine,

Let me join him in that moment,

Until our faces shine.

And when he raises up his voice,

Let me raise up mine as well!

Against all forms of injustice,

And all the powers of hell!

And when we drink in celebration,

Lord, keep us safe from harm,

Whether we find a sober driver,

Or stumble home arm in arm.

Some will think me crazy;

"Those Irish men are mad!

All their wars are happy!

And all their songs are sad."

But Lord make me like an Irishman,

Just as much as you can,

For though I may never be Irish,

At least then I'll be a man!
