*** While this story shows or, shall I say, gives no indication that there are anthropomorphic (furry) characters, it does not mean they are none. I am going to leave it to you the reader. You can place your idea of whatever character, be it wolf, fox, lycan, dragon, etc, into the lives in the people of this story. I think this fits nicely into the idea of SoFurry. This story has been posted on the net previously; quite a few years ago actually, back in 2005 when I first wrote it. It is more simplistic in nature, but it has a purpose. I hope you see it as much as I do.

The Lady Slipper

Jaden 12 years old******

"Whatcha looking at Cory?" turning to find his best friend's nose pressed against the bus window. Cory turned his bright blue eyes to face him, "That lady's slipper," he said pointing out the window.

As the school bus passed, Jaden noticed an ancient looking woman stooping over to pick up a weathered looking green slipper with pink and white over the top. On her right foot he noticed that she was wearing an old boot. It was odd but neither of them thought much about it since they lived in such a rural community. It might be Bar Harbor, Maine but there were a few eccentrics that still lived in the deeper woods. They watched the woman turn towards the bus and, as they discussed her, it seemed to Jaden that she looked directly into his eyes and soul for a moment before smiling. It was the weirdest feeling that he'd ever had.

Cory was rifling through his book bag. "Hey!" he said beaming and holding up the game he'd been saving up for, "Look what I got this weekend!" Jaden looked away from the window and into Cory's hand, "WOW!! COOL!! Have you tried it yet?" Cory's head shook back and forth, "Nope! I was waiting for you. I thought we'd play it after school." Those last words drifted off in Jaden's mind as a sickening crashing, crunching sound filled the air along with kids on the bus screaming. Jaden woke a few minutes later to find Cory on his lap and blood streaming from his nose. The side of the bus where they were located was caved in deeply with glass everywhere. He passed out again as he heard sirens in the distance.

*****Blink, blink***** "HE'S AWAKE!!"

The voice was loud in his head but he smiled to see a bandaged Cory smiling down at him. His own parents moved quickly to the bed, fawning over him while the doctor flashed a little light into his eyes. "How are you doing Jaden?" the doctor asked folding his arms.

"My head hurts," he moaned, "Can I have an aspirin?"

"Sorry bud, but until I can see that you're not having any other issues you'll just have to sleep it off. We'll give you a sedative in a bit to help you rest."

He noticed something. His leg was suspended in the air and in a cast. "UGH!!!" he started to get upset and nervous. His Mom moved closer and blocked Cory from his view. "It's ok dear," she said with a smile, "You've broken your leg but it's going to be fine." Cory moved over to the side of bed and sat down in the chair, "I still have the game," he grinned. Jaden grinned as well but grabbed the side of his head. He closed his eyes trying to will the headache away. The last thing he saw was Cory's crinkling and smiling blue eyes.

He was in the hospital a week and a half.Every day Cory would be there to talk with him; sometimes coming with his parents, sometimes with just with Jaden's own. Cory's parents were always quiet as they sat with his own family. He must have been in bad shape because the nurses were always quiet as well.

However, he and Cory would talk about school and homework. Jaden's Mom (Cathy) brought in his portable game. When his parents were out of the room, it would be just the two of them, him and Cory, sitting for hours switching off and playing. Finally he was released from the hospital and made his way home. His Dad, Frank, told him later that the man who hit the bus had died in the accident. He'd been drinking heavily and wasn't paying attention. "REALLY?" Jaden asked eyes growing wide. His Dad nodded as he focused back on driving. Cory reached over and squeezed his hand making him look up and see those eyes, smile and dimples. They continued to hold hands all the way home.

It was a few months before he could really get around without the wheelchair. His parents had to take him to school for a long time because the school bus wasn't equipped at the moment to deal with it. Cory would always meet him there and they'd go through their classes together. The day he showed up without his wheelchair and crutches only stuck in his mind the most. They were driving to school near the crash scene when he noticed the old and weathered woman walking down the road again and her slipper came off.She was dressed the same and leaned over to pick up her slipper. As she did, she looked up and into Jaden's eyes again locking onto them as they passed. The same smile creeping across her wizened face.

"COOLIES!" Cory yelled as he tooled around on the borrowed crutches. They were the same height and so he could use them without adjusting them in the slightest.Life returned to the same thing they were used too with the exception that they played a little less together then before since he had therapy more often. On the days they did get together they would just sit outside with their portable game systems while leaning against one of the old silver maples in the backyard. They would fall asleep that way; either one crashing into the other before gentle snoring would set in.During this time, Jaden became aware of something. Oh he'd begun to change physically but he also noticed that he didn't look at girls the way his other friends did. He looked at Cory more often.

Jaden 15 years old*****

"Come on Jaden!" Cory yelled out to him as he made his way down the hallway. The past two years had spun by. Swimming, fishing, summer fun outside, fireworks on the 4th, growing physically and mentally as most boys would do during these years. He and Cory would spend all their free time together; more if they could. Genetics had been on his side as he shot up while Cory's height only increased about 6 inches or so. Now he towered over his best friend as he neared six foot.

They'd been discussing the upcoming year after his birthday in late July. School had started the same, but in high school everything that they had thought they knew was thrown out the window and fraught with new challenges; girls being the persistent part of the equation. He realized long ago that they held no interest for him and tried to ensure he was always busy with his part time job, some other activity or hanging with Cory to avoid the constant pressure from them or his other peers to date.

Cory always stood to the side smirking at all of it.He never said a word about how many times girls would throw themselves at his best friend. The capper though, that sent him into fits, was when the one girl in their class ("the little slut", Cory called her) deliberately opened her blouse in front of Jaden while they were eating lunch. The reaction was swift and not what she expected. It sent her screaming out of the cafeteria with pop plastered all over her face and down her shirt from Jaden's sending pop out of his nose and mouth. Cory slid out of his chair and onto the floor howling. She never approached Jaden again, much to his satisfaction.

Over the years they'd played t-ball and then Little League but Cory dropped out, opting for books instead of sports. He always made it to the games during the summer and would sit up in the stands watching even if Jaden's own parents couldn't make it. Cory was there.

"Hold on Cor!" he yelled, "I'm hurrying!" while jogging up the printed poster on the wall near the cafeteria. Cory's blue eyes beamed. "LOOK!" as he pointed to the bright yellow poster board announcing tryouts for the baseball team. It was nearing that time of year, in the late spring around the same time of the accident. It struck Jaden as funny as again that morning on the way to school, now that he had his permit, that he saw the old woman again. Same clothes, same situation. As he drove slowly by, she would turn and stare into his eyes with a smile while trying to reach for the slipper.

"You need to try out Jaden," Cory said turning towards him. "Nah," he pushed it away and moved down the hall. He was stopped in mid movement by Cory's hand on his arm, "Too late," he said with a grin and a pen in hand.

Jaden shook his head, "Cory," he sighed, "I don't have the talent to be on the team." "What the fuck are you talking about?" his best friend screeched. Jaden slapped his hand over Cory's mouth and pulled him out the side door.

"Watch it jackass! The teacher's lounge was around the corner and you want McMann to give you detention?" Cory shook his head and moved the hand away, "Bullshit! I've been watching you for years and you do have the talent. Try out!" Jaden folded his arms. Cory knew this tactic and had one of his own. He lifted his eyelids in a deep doe like look and increase the falsetto of his voice, "F-f-f-f-or me?" It worked every time.

Jaden showed up to tryouts on the 3rd.Cory wasn't outside the classroom where they agreed to meet and it made him nervous. He was asked to take the field by the coach to shag some balls, take some practice throws on the mound and hit some balls thrown at him from the senior pitcher. His legs shook and he was about to pack it in when he looked up towards the stands and saw Cory sitting there with a sign, "You can do it!" He started laughing and calmed down. A little over an hour later the coach called all the boys in... He had made it. Not only that but coach was impressed enough to place him on the varsity roster. After they broke, he ran up to the stands and sat down beside his friend. "Well?" Cory asked nervously. "I'm in and playing varsity," Jaden said with a yell. That yell brought a look up to the stands by his fellow teammates. They looked up, shrugged and walked towards the locker room to change. Cory never missed a game.

That summer Jaden's nights began to get more and more difficult. The dreams he would have would always awaken him, dreams of Cory and his beautiful blue eyes. The times that he wasn't working or helping his Dad then he and Cory would hang out, play video games or go for a walk.

It was one of those warm summer evenings in late July just before his 16thbirthday, their junior year, where they were on a walk down by the springs located on his parent's property. They'd decided to take a short hike get out of the heat with some swimming. They'd been doing it for years. The water was cold as hell but it was nearing 90 today. It was rare but happened.

They stripped off their shorts and shirts and stood naked near the water daring the other to get in first. This time Cory got the upper hand and Jaden found himself falling forwards, arms flailing in all directions as the cold water hit his body,It was a good thing they were not near the house otherwise his Mom might want to pull out a bar of 'lye' soap to use in his mouth. Cory slumped down on the dry, warm, grass laughing hysterically until a large splash of ice cold water enveloped him. "FUCK!" he spat and then jumped into the water after Jaden.

They splashed around for hours. There was always the obligatory grab ass and harassment but recently the dreams that he'd been having caused him to flush more when Cory's hand slid over his chest and down his front. He moved out of the way and made his way over to the bank to lie down on the grass. Cory stood in the water not understanding what had just occurred.

"Jaden?" he asked sitting down beside his best friend, "Are you ok?" "No," the reply came quick and sharp. Cory pulled his knees up to his chin, "Did I do something wrong?"

A deep long sigh issued forth from Jaden, "No" was a softer reply, "It's me." Jaden sat up cross legged and turned towards Cory to say what was on his mind. Those blue eyes stood out again and drew him in, deeply. Cory's eyes were misty but he forced them down to the ground. Jaden scooted over, reached in and lifted his best friend's chin to stare into those pools of blue that matched the colour coming from the cool, clear water of the spring.

Seconds later he found his lips pressed against Cory's own. Cory's eyes opened wide and then closed. Jaden realized what he'd done and started to pull away but Cory's arms shot out and pulled him back and held him. What seemed like hours, but mostly minutes, passed before they broke their kiss and Cory lifted his hand to move the hair out of Jaden's eyes, "About time," was all he said, as he smiled.

Jaden 17 years old*****

The next year passed quickly as their love grew. They matured more physically, filling out and buffing up but their height stayed the same. Cory spent time in class working on his scholarly achievements but never missed any games. Jaden had decided on adding an addition sport to his talents by playing football the fall of their junior year.

Their relationship grew as did their times that they stole away just to be with the other. Baseball season rolled around again and Jaden, already the pitcher the previous year, made the team without any problem. And every year, around the same time, as he would be driving down the road to pick up Cory for school, he'd spy the old woman walking down the road.

She would be stooped over to pick up the slipper.Every time, as had happened the last she would catch Jaden's eye. Cory would always miss her though. Summer came and they finally decided that they would 'consummate' their love. They'd been discussing it for a long time and whenever they could get away they'd shoot up to Bangor and would spend a few hours at a major bookstore chain reading books and learning the ins and outs of gay sex.

They decided that they didn't want to take the chance that anyone would find them looking at things on their computers. It was during these times when they though that they were alone that they were making out hot and heavy in Jaden's room and forgot to shut the door all the way. Neither of them heard the car pull in or Cathy come into the house. She walked up and into the room to tell them that she'd come home early.

She stopped in the door way and saw them there kissing intently and then dropping to the bed before dozing off. She moved from the door and downstairs to take care of things. Her and her husband's suspicions were confirmed. Neither was upset but they wanted to make sure that Jaden knew they were aware as well.

That evening during dinner, she broached the subject of coming home early. Jaden's eyes flew open and then dropped as his shoulder's dropped as well. Tears fell from his eyes prompting his Mother to move quickly to his side and take him into her arms and comfort him. It took a while but they were able to get through to him that it was not an issue. They still loved him. The other thing she told him was that she had spoken to Gina (Cory's Mom) and let her know that they'd all been correct in their assumptions.

She pulled his head up to look her in the face, "Cory's parents are having the same talk with him." Jaden gasped and ran to the phone. It rang a couple of times before Mrs. Hayes answered the phone. He asked for Cory and spoke to him. It had been difficult but there had been support and unconditional love. The same thing he had received.

Late July rolled around and the families got together to celebrate both boys birthday's together this time since Jaden was 17 and Cory would turn that in two weeks. They asked to celebrate at the same time. It was just family; no one else. The love that the two of them felt was overpowering. Later that evening, they moved towards the camp site they'd set up by the spring. It was there that they gave themselves to each other. It was touch and go for a bit, as Jaden breached Cory first and then vice versa. The air was filled with sounds of kissing, heavy breathing and finally groans of deep pleasure as they gave themselves to the other. Sleep finally took them late in the early morning. Awaking holding Cory in his arms was the best thing in the world.

School began, senior year. Plans, college, a life time of what do we do now. Will we be together? What college? What? What? What? Those questions kept coming up constantly from friends and family making the two young men nervous. Spring rolled around again. The last year of baseball; the last year of high school and the dreams began again. The final game. They'd won! Cory was in the stands and ran on to the field and jumped into his arms. They hugged and hugged before he dropped down and then walked to the dugout and outside the fence away from prying eyes before he took Cory's lips in his own. "I love you Cory. Be with me forever," as he slipped a ring on Cory's left finger.

That night he fell asleep with a smile but dreams have a way of intruding, especially when the past once again decides to intrude on the present.

*****Jaden and Cory 12 years old*****

"Whatcha looking at Cory?" turning to find his best friend's nose pressed against the bus window. Cory turned his bright blue eyes to face him, "That lady's slipper," he said pointing out the window. As the school bus passed, Jaden noticed an ancient looking woman stooping over to pick up a weathered looking green slipper with pink and white over the top.One her right foot he noticed that she was wearing an old boot. It was odd but neither of them thought much about it since they lived in such a rural community.

The screech, the crunching metal... the screams, Cory's and his own...

Jaden sat straight up in bed with sweat rolling down him well formed chest, dripping down his belly. Rivulets streamed down the side of his unshaven jaw and dribbled off his chin. He sat there panting. Where was he?What was going on? It took him a while to get his bearings. He looked at the clock realizing the time. He was late. He realized that the sun was high in the sky as he slipped on his shorts and t-shirt.

It was Saturday and he and Cory were going to play the new video game that Cory had bought. He bounded down the stairs and into the kitchen grabbing a piece of toast off the table, "Later Mom, later Dad," he yelled heading towards the door."Where are you going?" she yelled turning from the sink.

Jaden stopped, "I told you yesterday Mom," he sighed at her poor memory. "I'm going over to Cory's house to play that new video game with him that he got last weekend." His Dad dropped the paper he was reading and stared at him. His Mom's mouth dropped with a slight gasp. "Jaden?" she asked moving over towards him and running her hand over his forehead.

He moved away from her hand and looked at the both of them. "What is wrong with you two?" he asked thinking they'd lost their minds. Cathy ran her hand down Jaden's face, "Honey," she said taking a deep breath, "You know Cory's been in a coma since the accident five years ago today."

His face went ashen. He was going to be sick. He turned to the mirror and saw a seventeen year old man and not the twelve year old he'd just dreamed. He ran out the door as his mind came back to the present.

"IT WAS ALL JUST A DREAM!!!!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs and pounded on the hood of his car. The keys were in the ignition where he'd left them the night before coming home from the baseball game. He had stopped by the place where the bus was hit and sat there in the car for hours crying. All he thought of in all those years was Cory and his blue eyes. They had won their final home game and the series. Cory was there, wasn't he? What was the dream and what was reality? He had stayed behind looking in the stands and wished that Cory had been there. He spun the motor and slammed the car into drive, tearing up the driveway in the process. His parents rushed out the door to stop him but they were too late as he tore out down the road.

He came to the curve. The curve where it all happened and where his and Cory's lives took drastic turns. Something made him slow down. It was the anniversary. He looked at the clock on the dashboard. It was about this time it had occurred. Seconds later he hit brake. He didn't know why. He just did and shut off the car. Resting his head on the steering wheel as tears well and began to drop slowly, then harder until sobs of anguish and grief filled his lungs. The wails filled the empty car. He began to remember how he and Cory had actually confessed their feelings to each other the weekend before the crash. "Jaden...." He looked up and stared out the front window thinking he heard someone call his name.He heard it again. "Jaden...." He got out of the car and began to yell, "Who the fuck is there? Come out and show yourself!"No one appeared.

Memories flooded him again. "Whatcha looking at Cory?" turning to find his best friend's nose pressed against the bus window. Cory turned his bright blue eyes to face him, "That lady's slipper," he said pointing out the window. Jaden dropped to the ground and shook with pain. It was a while but finally he began to get a hold of the situation as he steadied himself against the car. "The Lady's Slipper" echoed in his head. This time it wasn't Cory's voice but that of a woman, an older woman. He looked up and before him on the side of the road was a single, tall and brilliant 'Lady's Slipper Orchid'. The kind that grew irregularly in these parts, with deep green stem, white petal and deep pinkish throat. "Take it.... Take it too him..." was what he heard next. Jaden leaned over and plucked it. He moved to the car and began to drive.

He pulled up into the hospital parking lot as he did every Saturday morning. Six floors up and entered the room. There was Cory. His body had grown, albeit not perfectly, from the nutrition he'd been fed. The therapists were again exercising his body to keep his muscles from atrophying. He stood at the doorway and watched them. They soon left as he moved towards the bed and sat down in the chair beside it.Taking Cory's hand as he always did, he brought the fingers to his mouth and slowly kissed them. He ran the orchid over the 'sleeping' lips of his love and placed it on his chest before his face grimaced and he drew up into sobs that rolled down his cheeks and onto the blankets. "I never stopped loving you Cory," he said as he drifted asleep from the strain and stress that the day brought.

As he drifted away into dreams, the nose of the young man twitched from the tickle of the flower that moved slightly from the breeze of the open window. Eyes slowly opened and stared wide trying to figure out where he was at the moment. "A hospital room," he thought, "yeah, I remember hearing this in my sleep.People talking about a hospital room."Fingers moved on his hand as he noticed a man's head resting against the bed. "I know him," he thought, "Where do I know him?"

The man mumbled in his sleep, "I love you Cory."The voice... His mind whirled and played back the memories of their life together. The crash, the hospital... this was 'Jaden'. But why was he in a hospital bed? He was at Jaden's baseball game last night watching him play in the final game of the season. They'd won.Fingers crept across the bed and an arm lifted before settling on to a shaggy head of hair. He slowly caressed it and ran his fingers through it.

The movement on top of his head woke him. He figured it was Cory's family arriving as he looked up. The arm was different and in an odd position. Eyes met his own... BLUE EYES... Cory smiled, "I love those green eyes," a raspy voice echoed. Jaden gasped and then howled with pain, joy, love and every emotion known to man. He threw his body forward and arms around Cory shaking as if this were all a dream. Cory whispered, "I just saw you last night at the game. What am I doing here?" Jaden's eyes drew wide, "Cory?" he hiccupped, "Cory, that's impossible. You've been in a coma since you were twelve. You're 17 now."

Nurses appeared at the door from the noise and gasped. They were soon sent running in all directions. Doctors were being called, Cory's family were just walking onto the floor when the commotion broke. Seconds later, Jaden's family appeared concerned for his well being. The din coming from Cory's room made them run to the doorway. All four stopped in their tracks as they stared.

Cory looked at Jaden like he had lost his mind, "Did you take a hit last night that I didn't know about?" He held up his left hand, "You gave me this ring last night when you kissed me after the game." There on Cory's hand was a ring. The same type and style that he dreamed that he'd given Cory after the game.Jaden's face twisted in emotion as tears flowed down and dropped steadily across Cory's hand clenched tight to the crying man's jaw. He didn't understand it. He didn't care. He moved in and kissed his love. A long, lingering kiss... one which he never wanted to end.

Down along the roadway, not far from their homes, a lone figure of an old woman slowly moved along the highway. She stopped, removed her slipper and dropped it to the ground. It began to change and take shape. Green leaves formed, white petals opened and a deep pink throat of a single and beautiful orchid formed as she dissolved into mist.
